Abstract

The solar physics community is entering a golden era that is ripe with next-generation ground- and space-based facilities. With ever-increasing resolving power stemming from the newest observational telescopes, it becomes more challenging to obtain (near-)simultaneous measurements at high spatial, temporal and spectral resolutions, while operating at the diffraction limit of these new facilities. Hence, in recent years there has been increased interest in the capabilities integral field units (IFUs) offer towards obtaining the trifecta of high spatial, temporal and spectral resolutions contemporaneously. To date, IFUs developed for solar physics research have focused on mid-optical and infrared measurements. Here, we present an IFU prototype that has been designed for operation within the near-ultraviolet to mid-optical wavelength range, hence providing additional spectral coverage to the instrument suites developed to date. The IFU was constructed as a low-budget proof-of-concept for the upcoming 2m class Indian National Large Solar Telescope and employs circular cross-section fibres to guide light into a Czerny-Turner configuration spectrograph, with the resulting spectra captured using a high quantum efficiency scientific CMOS camera. Mapping of each input fibre allows for the reconstruction of two-dimensional spectral images, with frame rates exceeding 20 per second possible while operating in a non-polarimetric configuration. The science verification data presented here highlights the suitability of fibre-fed IFUs operating at near-ultraviolet wavelengths for solar physics research. Abstract

Traditionally the Serra Gaúcha region, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, is known as a barn productor of excellent quality wines. The aromatic complexity of wine in general, and white wine in particular, is what is essential to satisfy an increasingly demanding consumer. Among the most used techniques to achieve this purpose is the addition of yeasts of different genres, thus providing a range of aromatic characteristics that are accentuated in it. In this sense, the objective of this work was to evaluate the use of different strains of yeasts in white wines of Riesling Italic variety, made from grapes grown in the Serra Gaúcha region, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Based on the results, it was possible to observe that there were no significant differences between the treatments in relation to the variables pH, total acidity and alcoholic degree. However, with respect to the fermentation yield, T3 was the treatment that obtained the best performance, reaching the ideal density (below 1000 g.cm3) in the course of 6 to 7 days, followed by treatments T1 (Saccharomyces cerevisae) and T5 (Levulia pulcherrima) (7 to 8 days), with treatments T2 (Saccharomyces cerevisaecerevisae) and T4 (Torulaspora delbrueckii), which had the lowest performance (9 to 10 days). The T4 treatment was also the one that presented a higher amount of residual sugars, which proves the less activity of this yeast in more alcoholic means. All the yeasts used have a low production of volatile acidity, but the lowest concentration was Saccharomyces cerevisae cerevisae, used in treatment T2 (0.1 gL−1), and the other treatments presented higher concentrations (0, 4 to 0.5 gL−1), although it is still within the parameters considered ideal for obtaining quality white wines. T2 was also the treatment with lower concentrations of glycerol (5.1 g.L−1). This compound is mainly formed by glyceropyruvic fermentation through the metabolism of yeasts at the beginning of alcoholic fermentation, usually being produced by the first 50 grams of fermented sugars, which may indicate a greater activity of this yeast in this fermentation period. In general, we can say that all the yeasts used have the potential to produce quality white wines, since they had good fermentation yields, satisfactory production of alcohol and glycerol, and low production of volatile acidity.

Abstract

Luminosity, which is the total amount of radiant energy emitted by an object, is one of the most critical quantities in astrophysics for characterizing stars. Equally important is the temporal evolution of a star's luminosity because of its intimate connection with the stellar energy budget, large-scale convective motion, and heat storage in the stellar interior. Here, we model the solar luminosity by extending a semi-empirical total solar irradiance (TSI) model that uses solar-surface magnetism to reconstruct solar irradiance over the entire 4{\pi} solid angle around the Sun. This model was constrained by comparing its output to the irradiance in the Earth's direction with the measured TSI. Comparing the solar luminosity to the TSI on timescales from days to for cycles 23 and 24, we find poor agreement on short timescales (< solar rotation). On longer timescales, however, we find good agreement between the luminosity model and the TSI, which suggests that the extrapolation of luminosities to multi-cycle timescales based on TSI reconstructions may be possible. We show that the solar luminosity is not constant but varies in phase with the solar cycle. This variation has an amplitude of 0.14% from minimum to maximum for solar cycle 23. Considering the energetics in the solar convection zone, it is therefore obvious that a steady-state input from the radiative zone at the solar minimum level would lead to a gradual reduction in the energy content in the convection zone over multi-century timescales. We show that the luminosity at the base of the convection zone should be approximately 0.032% higher than that at the solar surface during solar minimum to maintain net energy equilibrium through the solar cycle. These different energy-input scenarios place constraints on the long-term evolution of the total solar irradiance and its impact on the solar forcing of climate variability., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJS. This is based on procedure combinations indicated to treat body aesthetic dysfunctions, such as localized fat, stretch marks, blemishes, flaccidity, buttocks remodeling, lean mass gain and muscle definition. This study aims to define the clinical concept of BHA, its applications and the main protocols used based on injectable pharmacotherapy. For this purpose, we performed a retrospective review of proven efficient injectable procedures with advanced results for the treatment of body aesthetic disorders, in addition to relying on data obtained from previous clinical experiences. Based on these data, we describe how different compounds can act for treatment of the main body aesthetic dysfunctions, such as lipolytic compounds and collagen biostimulators. In addition, the main application techniques and treatment protocols for each of these dysfunctions were defined. Abstract

Low-dose ionizing radiation may induce far-reaching consequences in human, especially regarding intrauterine development. Many studies have documented that the risks of in utero irradiation remain controversial and no effect is reported at doses below 50 mGy. Animal models are often used to clarify the non-fully understood impact of intrauterine irradiation and allow the manipulation of several experimental setups, making possible the analysis of a wide range of end points. We investigated the impact of in utero low-dose X-ray irradiation on postnatal development in rat offspring through a set of well-established behavioral parameters and weight gain. To investigate the hypothesis of postnatal behavioral and physiological alterations due to prenatal low-dose ionizing radiation we exposed pregnant Wistar to 15 mGy of X-rays on gestational days 8 and 15 and control mothers. This low-dose value into diagnostic range can be achieved in a single radiological exam. Four male animals were select from each litter. At infant age, eye-opening test and negative geotaxis tests were performed. Animals were tested at postnatal ages 30 and 70 days in open field, elevated plus-maze, and hole board tests. We evaluated the weight gain of all animals throughout the experiment. The results presented differences between irradiated and non-irradiated animals. Exposed animals presented lower weight gain in adult life, impairment in central nervous system since infant phase, behavioral alterations persisting into later life, and motor coordination impairment. Effects at doses under 100 mGy have not been reported, however, the present study demonstrate that 15 mGy intrauterine exposure was able to generate deleterious effects., Comment: 15 pages, 7 tables

Abstract

The plasma parameters such as the electron density and temperature plays a key role in the dynamics of the solar atmosphere. These characteristics are important in solar physics, because they can help to understand the physics in the solar corona. The goal is to reconstruct the electron density and temperature distributions in the solar corona. The relations between emission and plasma parameters in different time scales are studied. We present a physics-based model to reconstruct the density, temperature and emission in the EUV band. This model called CODET is composed of a flux transport model, an extrapolation model, an emission model and an optimization algorithm. The CODET model parameters were constrained by comparing the model's output to the TIMED/SEE record instead of direct observations because it covers a longer time interval than the direct solar observations currently available. The most important results of the current work that the recovery of SSI variability in specific wavelengths in the EUV band, also the variations in density and temperature in large time scale through the solar atmosphere, with the CODET model. The evolution of the electron density and temperature profiles through the solar corona in different layers during the solar cycle 23 and 24, will be presented. The emission maps were obtained and they are in accordance to the observations. Also, the density and temperature maps are related to the variations of the magnetic field in different layers through the solar atmosphere.

Abstract

As "Stern-Gerlach first" becomes the new paradigm within the undergraduate quantum mechanics curriculum, we show how one can extend the treatment found in conventional textbooks to cover some of the exciting new developments within the quantum field. Namely, we illustrate how one can employ Dirac notation and conventional quantum rules to describe a delayed choice variant of the quantum eraser which is realized within the Stern-Gerlach framework. Covering this material, allows the instructor to reinforce notions of changes of basis functions, quantum superpositions, quantum measurement, and the complementarity principle as expressed in whether we know "which-way" information or not. It also allows the instructor to dispel common misconceptions of when a measurement occurs and when a system is in a superposition of states. We comment at the end how a similar methodology can be employed when the more conventional two-slit experiment is treated., Comment: (20 pages, 8 figures)

Abstract

We describe the preliminary design of a magnetograph and visible-light imager instrument to study the solar dynamo processes through observations of the solar surface magnetic field distribution. The instrument will provide measurements of the vector magnetic field and of the line-of-sight velocity in the solar photosphere. As the magnetic field anchored at the solar surface produces most of the structures and energetic events in the upper solar atmosphere and significantly influences the heliosphere, the development of this instrument plays an important role in reaching the scientific goals of The Atmospheric and Space Science Coordination (CEA) at the Brazilian National Institute for Space Research (INPE). In particular, the CEA's space weather program will benefit most from the development of this technology. We expect that this project will be the starting point to establish a strong research program on Solar Physics in Brazil. 35. Exploring the Inquiry-Based Learning Structure to Promote Scientific Culture in the Classrooms of Higher Education Sciences

Abstract

This article examines student engagement in an inquiry-based learning activity, planned to provide students with elements in the social, epistemic, and conceptual dimensions related to the scientific practice in immunology. The activity was applied to 39 groups of students enrolled in immunology or biochemistry courses in a public university in Brazil. Students performed data-collection through the execution of an "in vitro" assay. We analyzed how students represent data and use them to support their claims in their written constructs. To clarify which are the productive epistemologies in students' reports, we developed a framework for epistemic practice analysis. Our findings point to a pattern of several epistemic practice categories in their written text, mostly related to the particular contingences of data analysis, rather than to theoretical concepts. In addition, we observed that students performed literary inscriptions to represent their data; however, they tended not to cite all data obtained in their written texts. These results suggest that immunology education strategies should provide students with approaches that explore the role Epistemology of data representation in the scientific text rhetoric.

Abstract

Multi-wavelength solar images in the EUV are routinely used for analysing solar features such as coronal holes, filaments, and flares. However, images taken in different bands often look remarkably similar as each band receives contributions coming from regions with a range of different temperatures. This has motivated the search for empirical techniques that may unmix these contributions and concentrate salient morphological features of the corona in a smaller set of less redundant source images. Blind Source Separation (BSS) precisely does this. Here we show how this novel concept also provides new insight into the physics of the solar corona, using observations made by SDO/AIA. The source images are extracted using a Bayesian positive source separation technique. We show how observations made in six spectral bands, corresponding to optically thin emissions, can be reconstructed by linear combination of three sources. These sources have a narrower temperature response and allow for considerable data reduction since the pertinent information from all six bands can be condensed in only one single composite picture. In addition, they give access to empirical temperature maps of the corona. 40. Evolution of the solar magnetic flux on time scales of years to millenia

Abstract

We improve the description of the evolution of the Sun's open and total magnetic flux on time scales of years to millenia. In the model employed here the evolution of the solar total and open magnetic flux is computed from the flux emerging at the solar surface in the form of bipolar magnetic features, which is related to the sunspot number cycle parameters and can be estimated from historical records. Compared to earlier versions of the model in addition to the long-lived open flux, now also a more rapidly decaying component of the open flux is considered. The model parameters are constrained by comparing its output with observations of the total surface magnetic flux and with a reconstruction of the open magnetic flux based on the geomagnetic indexes. A method to compute the Sun's total magnetic flux and the sunspot number during the Holocene, starting from the open flux obtained from cosmogenic isotopes records, is also presented. By considering separately a rapdly evolving and a slowly evolving component of the open flux the model reproduces the Sun's open flux, as reconstructed based on the aa-index, much better and a reasonable description of the radial component of interplanetary magnetic field data are obtained. The greatest improvement is in the reproduction of the cyclic variation of the open flux, including the amplitudes of individual cycles. Furthermore, we found that approximately 25% of the modeled open flux values since the end of the Maunder Minimum are lower than the averaged value during the current low minimum. The same proportion is observed in reconstructions of the open flux during the Holocene based on cosmogenic isotopes, which suggests that the present solar minimum conditions are below average, but not exceptional in terms of the magnetic flux.
