Background : Although adolescents with obesity have an increased risk of cardiometabolic disease, a subset maintains a healthy cardiometabolic profile. Unhealthy lifestyle behaviors may determine cardiometabolic risk. We aimed to characterize the lifestyle behaviors of adolescents with obesity, compare differences between metabolically healthy obesity (MHO) and metabolically unhealthy obesity (MUO), and assess associations between lifestyle behaviors and cardiometabolic profiles. Methods : Participants aged 10-18 years with body mass index (BMI) ≥ 95 th percentile were included. Dietary intake (DI) was estimated from 3-day food records, and diet quality (DQ) was assessed using the Healthy Eating Index-Canadian Adaptation. Physical activity (PA), body composition, anthropometrics, blood markers, and blood pressure (BP) were objectively measured. MUO was defined as having high triglycerides, BP, glucose, or low high-density lipoprotein. Regression analyses were performed between lifestyle behaviors and cardiometabolic markers. Results : Thirty-nine participants (BMI z-score 2.8 [2.5-3.5], age 12.5 [10.9-13.5] years, 56.4% female) were included. A high proportion of participants failed to meet lifestyle recommendations, particularly for DQ (94.7%, n = 36), fiber (94.7%, n = 36), and PA (90.9%, n = 30). No differences in lifestyle behaviors were found between MUO (59.0%, n = 22) and MHO (41.0%, n = 16). Protein intake was negatively associated with BMI and waist circumference z-scores, fat mass index, insulin resistance, low-density lipoprotein, and C-reactive protein, whereas higher DQ was associated with lower C-reactive protein. Higher light PA levels were associated with lower total cholesterol and triglycerides. Conclusion : Adolescents with either MUO or MHO displayed low adherence to DQ, DI, and PA recommendations; no differences in lifestyle behaviors were found. Protein intake, DQ, and PA were associated with a healthier cardiometabolic profile.

Dietary fibers are associated with favorable gastrointestinal, immune, and metabolic health outcomes when consumed at sufficient levels. Despite the well-described benefits of dietary fibers, children and adolescents continue to fall short of daily recommended levels. This gap in fiber intake (i.e., "fiber gap") might increase the risk of developing early-onset pediatric obesity and obesity-related comorbidities such as type 2 diabetes mellitus into adulthood. The structure-dependent physicochemical properties of dietary fiber are diverse. Differences in solubility, viscosity, water-holding capacity, binding capability, bulking effect, and fermentability influence the physiological effects of dietary fibers that aid in regulating appetite, glycemic and lipidemic responses, and inflammation. Of growing interest is the fermentation of fibers by the gut microbiota, which yields both beneficial and less favorable end-products such as short-chain fatty acids (e.g., acetate, propionate, and butyrate) that impart metabolic and immunomodulatory properties, and gases (e.g., hydrogen, carbon dioxide, and methane) that cause gastrointestinal symptoms, respectively. This narrative review summarizes (1) the implications of fibers on the gut microbiota and the pathophysiology of pediatric obesity, (2) some factors that potentially contribute to the fiber gap with an emphasis on undesirable gastrointestinal symptoms, (3) some methods to alleviate fiber-induced symptoms, and (4) the therapeutic potential of whole foods and commonly marketed fiber supplements for improved health in pediatric obesity., (© 2024. Purpose: Metabolic diseases such as diabetes mellitus may play a role in the development and progression of prostate cancer (PC); however, this association remains to be explored in the context of specific PC stages. The objective of this study was to systematically review the evidence for an association between diabetes and overall, early, or advanced PC risk., Materials and Methods: A systematic review with meta-analysis was performed (MEDLINE, EMBASE, and CINAHL) from inception until September 2023. Cohort and case-control studies that assessed PC risk in adult males (≥18 years) associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus or diabetes (if there was no distinction between diabetes type) were included. The Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) was used to assess study bias; those with NOS<7 were excluded. Evidence certainty was assessed with the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) method., Results: Thirty-four studies (n=26 cohorts and n=8 case-controls) were included. Of these, 32 assessed diabetes and all PC stages combined, 12 included early PC stages, and 15 included advanced PC stages. Our meta-analysis showed diabetes had a protective effect against early PC development (n=11, risk ratio [RR]=0.71; 95% confidence interval [CI]=0.61-0.83, I²=84%) but no association was found for combined (n=21, RR=0.95; 95% CI=0.79-1.13, I²=99%) or advanced PC stages (n=15, RR=0.96; 95% CI=0.77-1.18, I²=98%) at diagnosis. According to GRADE, the evidence certainty was very low., Conclusions: Diabetes may be protective against early PC stages, yet evidence linking diabetes to risk across all stages, and advanced PC specifically, is less conclusive. High heterogeneity may partially explain discrepancy in findings and was mostly associated with study design, method used for PC diagnosis, and risk measures. Background: The metabolic load-capacity index (LCI), which represents the ratio of adipose to skeletal muscle tissue-containing compartments, is potentially associated with cardiometabolic diseases., Objectives: To examine the associations between the LCI and cardiometabolic risk factors in children and youth with obesity., Methods: This is a cross-sectional study including 10-18 years-old participants with a BMI of ≥95 th . LCI by air-displacement plethysmography (ADP) was calculated as fat mass divided by fat-free mass, and LCI by ultrasound (US) as subcutaneous adipose tissue divided by skeletal muscle thickness. Sex-specific medians stratified participants into high versus low LCI. Single (inflammation, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia and hypertension) and clustered cardiometabolic risk factors were evaluated. Linear and logistic regression models tested the associations between these variables, adjusted for sexual maturation., Results: Thirty-nine participants (43.6% males; 59% mid-late puberty) aged 12.5 (IQR: 11.1-13.5) years were included. LCI by ADP was positively associated with markers of inflammation and dyslipidemia; having a higher LCI predicted dyslipidemia in logistic regression. Similarly, LCI by US was positively associated with markers of dyslipidemia and blood pressure. In mid-late pubertal participants, LCI by US was positively associated with markers of insulin resistance and inflammation., Conclusions: Participants with unfavourable cardiometabolic profile had higher LCI, suggesting its potential use for predicting and monitoring cardiometabolic health in clinical settings., (© 2024 The Authors. Lifestyle and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) are good markers of surgical obesity treatment. This study aimed to investigate the lifestyle and HRQoL of patients at least five years after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass in public (SUS) and private (PVT) Brazilian healthcare systems. In this cross-sectional study, weight loss (WL), % of excess WL (%EWL), diet quality, physical activity, alcohol consumption, and HRQoL were evaluated. Analysis of covariance, binary and multinomial logistic regression, adjusted for confounders, were performed. The SUS group had more vulnerable socioeconomic statuses than the PVT group. Total %WL and % EWL were 24.64 ± 0.99% and 60.46 ± 2.41%, respectively, without difference between groups. In the Pain/Discomfort and Anxiety/Depression domains of HRQoL, more than 50% reported moderate problems without differences between groups. Processed food ingestion was higher in the PVT (132.10 ± 60.15 g/1000 kcal) than in the SUS (103.43 ± 41.72 g/1000 kcal), however, without statistical significance ( p = 0.093). The PVT group showed lower physical activity (OR: 0.23; 95%CI: 0.87-0.63; p = 0.004) and a higher risk of alcohol-related problems (OR: 3.23; 95%CI; 1.03-10.10; p = 0.044) compared to SUS group. Participants generally achieved satisfactory WL, regardless of healthcare systems. However, PVT participants had unfavorable lifestyle characteristics, highlighting the need for studies investigating environmental issues post-bariatric surgery.

Background/aims: The aim of this study was to apply the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism/European Association for the Study of Obesity (ESPEN/EASO) consensus to identify sarcopenic obesity (SO) in adults mid to long-term post-Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) using both dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). Further, this approach was compared to accepted sarcopenia diagnostic criteria (Revised European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People [EWGSOP2] and Sarcopenia Definition and Outcomes Consortium [SDOC])., Methods: This cross-sectional study included adults ≥2 years post-RYGB surgery. Obesity was diagnosed by excess fat mass (FM) for all diagnostic criteria. Agreement was evaluated using Cohen's Kappa., Results: We evaluated 186 participants (90.9% female, median age 43.9 years, 6.8 years post-surgery), of which 60.2% (BIA), and 83.3% (DXA) had excess FM. Low muscle strength was not identified using absolute handgrip strength. The prevalence of SO by BIA or DXA, respectively, was 7.9% (95%CI 3.9-12.5), and 23.0% (95%CI 17.1-30.3) [ESPEN/EASO SO consensus]; 0.7% (95%CI 0-2.0), and 3.3% (95%CI 0.7-5.9) [EWGSOP2]; and 27.0% (95%CI 19.7-34.2), and 30.3% (95%CI 23.0-37.5) [SDOC]. Agreement between the ESPEN/EASO SO consensus and other diagnostic criteria was none to slight using DXA: EWGSOP2 k = 0.19; 95% CI 0.04-0.34, or SDOC k = 0.16; 95% CI -0.01-0.32. Moderate agreement was observed within the ESPEN/EASO SO consensus for BIA and DXA (k = 0.43; 95% CI 0.26-0.60)., Conclusions: This is the first study to explore the prevalence of SO using the ESPEN/EASO criteria. We identified a high but variable prevalence of SO in post-bariatric surgery patients (7.9-23.0%), depending on the body composition technique used; prevalence was higher using DXA. Little agreement was observed for the diagnosis of SO using the three diagnostic criteria. Individuals following bariatric surgery are considered at high risk for the development of sarcopenic obesity (excess fat mass, low muscle mass and low physical function), and exercise may play an important role in its prevention and treatment. We systematically reviewed 5 scientific databases (Embase, Medline, Scopus, SPORTDiscus, and Web of Science) and 2 grey literature databases (ProQuest and Google Scholar) for clinical trials that evaluated the effect of exercise on muscle strength in adults following bariatric surgery and conducted a separate meta-analysis for studies that used different muscle strength tests. Random-effect models, restricted maximum likelihood method and Hedges' g were used. The review protocol was registered at the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO) database (CRD42020152142). Fifteen studies were included (638 patients), none had a low risk of bias, and all were included in at least 1 of the 5 meta-analyses (repetition maximum [lower and upper limbs], sit-to-stand, dynamometer, and handgrip tests). Exercise interventions improved both upper (effect size, 0.71; 95% CI, 0.41-1.01; I2 = 0%) and lower (effect size, 1.37; 95% CI, 0.84-1.91; I2 = 46.14) limb muscle strength, as measured by repetition maximum tests. Results were similar for the sit-to-stand (effect size, 0.60; 95% CI, 0.20-1.01; I2 = 68.89%) and dynamometer (effect size, 0.46; 95% CI, 0.06-0.87; I2 = 31.03%), but not for the handgrip test (effect size, 0.11; 95% CI, -0.42-0.63; I2 = 73.27%). However, the certainty level of the meta-analyses was very low. Exercise with a resistance training component performed post bariatric surgery may improve muscle strength, which is related to sarcopenic obesity, functional capacity, and mortality risk, therefore should be included in the follow-up., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

Inadequate protein intake and low levels of physical activity are common long-term sequelae after bariatric surgery and can negatively affect muscle strength (MS) and physical function (PF). The study investigated the effects of resistance training with or without protein supplementation on MS and PF. The study, which involved a 12-week controlled trial ( n = 61) of individuals 2-7 years post-Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB), comprised four groups: whey protein supplementation (PRO; n = 18), maltodextrin placebo (control [CON]; n = 17), resistance training combined with placebo (RTP; n = 11), and resistance training combined with whey protein supplementation (RTP+PRO; n = 15). An isokinetic dynamometer was used to measure MS (peak torque at 60°/s and 180°/s). PF was measured with the 30-s sit-to-stand (30-STS), 6-min walk (6-MWT), and timed up-and-go (TUG) tests. There were improvements in the absolute and relative-to-bodyweight peak torque at 60°/s and 180°/s, TUG, 6-MWT and 30-STS in the RTP and RTP+PRO groups, but not in the CON and PRO groups. Changes in MS were significantly correlated with changes in PF between the pre- and post-intervention periods. A supervised resistance training program, regardless of protein supplementation, improved MS and PF in the mid-to-long-term period after RYGB and can lead to clinical benefits and improved quality of life.

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the association of hip muscle strength, dynamic balance and functional capacity in the older adults aged 60 to 79 years and older adults aged 80 years and older. A total of 191 community-dwelling older adults participated in this study. Isometric muscle strength was quantified as the peak torque (PT), measured using an isokinetic dynamometer. Functional capacity was determined by the forward step test (ST) and the dynamic balance by the tandem gait (TG) test. The hip flexor, extensor, abductor and adductor PT in the older adults aged 60 to 79 years had a positive influence on the execution of the step test (p < 0.05). The peak adductor torque did not show a significant association with tandem gait (p = 0.649). In older adults aged 80 years and older, the peak adductor torque was the only one that showed an association with the performance of the ST (p = 0.001) and TG (p = 0.024) tests. The hip adductors may have a higher contribution in adults aged 80 years and older during the execution of clinical tests. Purpose: Resistance training program (RTP) assist the maintenance of optimal body composition and inflammatory response modulation in individuals in late Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB). This study aimed to investigate the effect of RTP on body composition and serum inflammatory profile in individuals 2-7 years post-RYGB., Methods: Volunteers were matched on body mass index (BMI), age, sex, and years after surgery, and they were allocated as control or RTP group. Body composition, visceral fat area (VFA), and inflammatory serum markers were measured at baseline and after 12 weeks of RTP., Results: The sample baseline characteristics (n = 63; BMI = 29.7 ± 5.3 kg/m 2 ) were similar between the groups. After intervention, the RTP group presented higher fat-free mass (Δ 1.17 ± 1.12 kg, p = 0.003) and skeletal muscle mass (Δ 0.77 ± 0.66 kg, p = 0.002) and decreased leptin levels (Δ -0.15 ± 0.60 pg/mL, p = 0.028). Ultrasensitive C-reactive protein (CRPus), interleukin-6, adiponectin, and monocyte chemotactic protein-1 showed no significant time-by-group interaction. After the categorization of RTP group individuals by VFA median values (129.8 cm 2 , IQR 90.9; 152.5), participants with VFA values above the median presented a significant decrease in CRPus (Δ -0.20 mg/L, IQR -7.59; -0.03, p = 0.022) when compared to the participants with VFA values below the median., Conclusion: The RTP improved individuals' body composition by a modest but significant enhancing muscle mass and decreasing serum leptin and CRPus levels, especially in individuals with VFA values above the median. RTPs assist in maintaining the adequate body composition as they contribute to a decrease in proinflammatory markers in long-term RYGB., (© 2021. Background: Resistance training (RT) and adequate protein intake are recommended as strategies to preserve fat-free mass (FFM) and resting metabolic demand after bariatric surgery. However, the effect of both interventions combined in the late postoperative period is unclear. This study investigated the effects of RT, isolated and combined with protein supplementation, on body composition and resting energy expenditure (REE) in the late postoperative period of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB)., Methods: This controlled trial involved patients who were 2-7 years postRYGB. Participants were partially matched on body mass index (BMI), age, sex, and years after surgery, and divided into four groups, placebo maltodextrin (control [CON]; n = 17), whey protein supplementation (PRO; n = 18), RT combined with placebo (RTP; n = 13), and RT combined with whey protein supplementation (RTP + PRO; n = 15)-considering the participants who completed the protocol. REE was measured by indirect calorimetry and body composition by multifrequency electrical bioimpedance., Results: Participant characteristics (40.3 ± 8.3 years old; average BMI 29.7 ± 5.3 kg/m 2 ; 88.9% females) were similar among groups. The RTP+PRO group showed an increase of 1.46 ± 1.02 kg in FFM and 0.91 ± 0.64 kg in skeletal muscle mass (SMM), which was greater than the equivalent values in the CON group (- 0.24 ± 1.64 kg, p = 0.006 and - 0.08 ± 0.96 kg, p = 0.008, respectively). There was no significant time-by-group interaction for absolute or relative REE., Conclusion: Combined RT and adequate protein intake via supplementation can increase FFM and SMM in the late postoperative period without changing REE. These associated strategies were effective in improving muscle-related parameters and potentially in improving the patients' physical function.

Objective: To investigate whether lower limb muscle strength could be a risk factor for the first fall among nonfaller community-dwelling older adults. Method: Hip, knee, and ankle peak torque (PT) was measured with an isokinetic dynamometer in 101 older adults with no history of falls in the previous year. Next, the authors followed up the participants on a monthly basis by telephone contact to determine the occurrence of fall episodes over a period of 1 year. Multivariate logistic regression adjusted for confounding variables was applied to assess the relationship between falls and lower limb PT. Results: there was no association between lower limb PT and future falls ( p > .05). Conclusion: Based on these results, it is important to identify other factors that predispose older adults with no history of falls to falling for the first time, so that early and effective preventive strategies may be elaborated.

Introduction: The relationship between late post-bariatric surgery weight regain and gut microbiota is not completely understood., Objective: To analyze the profile of gut microbiota among patients with and without late weight regain after post-Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) and to compare it with a control group (CG) comprised of obese Brazilian individuals., Methods: This is a cross-sectional study which enrolled 34 morbidly obese women divided into 3 groups: post-Roux-en-Y gastric bypass without (RYGB&#95;non-regain), and with weight regain (RYGB&#95;regain) at least 5 years after surgery, and a CG of preoperative individuals. Gut microbiota was determined by metagenomic analyses., Results: The alpha diversity was higher in groups RYGB non-regain and RYGB regain when compared with CG (p < 0.05). Both RYGB non-regain and RYGB regain groups showed a lower abundance of the phylum Bacteroidetes when compared with CG (p < 0.01). The genera Bacteroides and SMB53 were increased in CG (p < 0.05). Group RYGB non-regain showed more abundance of the Akkermansia genus when compared with CG and group RYGB regain (p < 0.05). RYGB non-regain showed a greater abundance of the Phascolarctobacterium genus and lower of the SMB53 genus when compared with CG (p < 0.05). RYGB non-regain showed a greater abundance of the Phascolarctobacterium genus and a lower of the SMB53 genus when compared with CG (p < 0.05)., Conclusion: The gut microbiota of individuals which presented late weight regain after RYGB was significantly different in comparison to individuals with a successful weight loss, a finding that points towards a significant role of gut microbiota on weight loss and maintenance after surgery.

Background: Hip abductor muscles are important for the maintenance of postural stability, mainly on the mediolateral direction and unipodal support conditions. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of unilateral induced fatigue of hip abductor muscles on balance and functional capacity of older women., Methods: The study included physically independent women aged 60-75 years. We assessed static balance with the single limb stance test (SLS) and evaluated functional capacity with the maximum gait speed (MGS) and step test (ST). We ran the protocol of hip abductor muscle fatigue with a Biodex isokinetic dynamometer. Assessment of balance and functional capacity happened before and after the muscle fatigue protocol. We applied the t-test for repeated measures to determine whether unilateral hip abductor muscle fatigue influences the performance in the tests (SLS, MGS and ST)., Results: The protocol of hip abductor muscle fatigue negatively affected all three evaluated tasks: SLS (p = 0.000), ST (p = 0.000) and MGS (p = 0.000). However, the single limb stance test was the most task affected (effect size = 0.51, pre- and post-fatigue difference = 28.1 %)., Conclusion: After the unilateral muscle fatigue of hip abductors, we observed the worst performance on clinical tests, mainly regarding the SLS test, which shows the involvement of hip abductors during usual motor tasks. Objective: The objective of this study was to determine the accuracy of 3 clinical tests (lateral step [LS], tandem gait [TG], and single-leg stance [SS]) in identifying older women with reduced hip abductor muscle strength and to determine the post-test probability of each test and of their combination in changing the certainty of diagnosis., Methods: In this cross-sectional study, a total of 123 older women received clinical testing to obtain the variables LS height, time for TG execution, percentage of errors in TG, and time of permanence on SS and were tested for isometric hip abductor peak torque using an isokinetic dynamometer. Only the dominant lower limb was evaluated. Multiple linear regression analysis with adjustment was performed to determine the association among variables, followed by the receiver operating characteristic curve to identify clinical variables that can discriminate older women with reduced abductor muscle strength. Post-test probability was then calculated based on the receiver operating characteristic curve data., Results: Although the 4 clinical variables showed correlation with abductor peak torque, only LS and TG time were able to discriminate reduced abductor muscle strength with low accuracy (area under the curve was between 0.5 and 0.7). However, the combination of LS and TG time increased post-test probability from 47% (prevalence of weakness in the population) to 76% when both tests were positive and reduced it from 47% to 18% when both tests were negative., Conclusion: The combination of the LS test and TG time is useful for the indirect assessment of hip abductor strength in community-dwelling older women., Impact: Hip abductor muscle strength is extremely important for function in older women. Objective: To investigate the perception of hunger and satiety and its association with nutrient intake in women who regain weight in the postoperative period after bariatric surgery., Methods: Cross-sectional study of adult women divided into three groups: weight regain (n = 20), stable weight (n = 20) (both at least 24 months after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery), and non-operated obesity (n = 20). A visual analogue scale measured hunger/satiety perception while fasting, immediately after finishing a test meal, and 180 min after finishing the test meal. The incremental area above or under the curve was calculated. Food intake was analyzed by 3 days of food recall and adjusted for intraindividual variation. To make between-group comparisons, Mann-Whitney, ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis, and independent-samples T tests and Pearson's correlation were used., Results: There were no between-group differences in incremental areas of hunger/satiety, but protein intake was significantly lower among patients who regained weight compared with those who had stable body weight (0.99 ± 0.23 g/kg body weight vs. 1.17 ± 0.21 g/kg body weight, p = 0.047). In the group that regained weight, satiety was correlated positively with usual dietary protein density (r = 0.541; p = 0.017) and negatively with usual carbohydrate intake (r = - 0.663; p = 0.002)., Conclusion: Women who regained weight presented similar perceptions of hunger/satiety to those of patients without weight regain and with non-operated obesity. In patients who regained weight postoperatively, satiety perception was correlated positively with usual dietary protein density and inversely with usual carbohydrate intake.

This work aims to identify and quantify the percentage of Rickettsia spp., Ehrlichia spp., Babesia spp. and Hepatozoon spp. positive pet dogs, and to identify ticks collected on these animals in the state of Espírito Santo, in the Southeast region of Brazil. The study included 378 dogs, 226 females and 152 males, of various breeds and ages (mean age of 4.1 years). All animals were examined for ticks, and whole blood was collected and processed by conventional PCR protocols for Babesia spp., Anaplasmataceae, Hepatozoon spp. and by real-time PCR for Ehrlichia canis. Of the 378 dogs examined, 157 (41.53%) had ticks at the time of the study, which were identified as R. sanguineus s.l. in 154 animals (98.10%), Amblyomma ovale in one animal (0.63%), and Amblyomma sculptum in 2 animals (1.27%). In the PCR for Babesia spp., 5 animals (1.32%) were positive, producing DNA sequences 100% identical to Babesia vogeli. For Anaplasmataceae, 34 animals (9%) were positive, 10 of which generated DNA sequences 100% similar to Ehrlichia canis. The other 24 samples generated fragments 100% identical to Anaplasma platys. In the PCR for Hepatozoon spp, 39 animals (10.31%) were positive, producing sequences 100% identical to Hepatozoon canis. Finally, in the real-time PCR specific for E. canis, 28 animals (7.40%) were positive. Coinfection with 2 or 3 agents was observed in 20 animals (5.29%). Of the 378 dogs sampled, 312 were analyzed by indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA) for E. canis and five species of Rickettsia (R. rickettsii, R. parkeri, R. amblyommatis, R. rhipicephali and R. bellii). Among them, 71 dogs (22.75%) had a positive reaction for E. canis and 16 dogs (5.13%) had antibody titers higher than 64 to at least one Rickettsia species, 5 of them (1.60%) to R. rickettsii. Samples of blood were collected from 10 equines in the regions where dogs were found with positive serology for any one of the Rickettsia sp. tested. In the municipality of Vila Velha, two equines were positive for R. bellii with inverse titers of 64 and 128. These results indicate that tick-transmitted agents, such as E. canis, A. platys, B. vogeli, H. canis, and several spotted fever group Rickettsia are circulating in the canine population of the Brazilian state of Espirito Santo., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier B.V. Among the 69 tick species currently recognized in Brazil, only 13 have been reported in the state of Espírito Santo, southeastern Brazil. This study reports new tick records from Espírito Santo, and investigated the infection by rickettsial bacteria in these ticks. During 2012-2016, ticks were occasionally collected from different sources in Espírito Santo. In addition, we revised tick unpublished records from Espírito Santo in a tick collection. A total of 1263 tick specimens comprising 19 tick species (17 Ixodidae, 2 Argasidae) were collected. The following seven tick species are reported for the first time in Espírito Santo: Amblyomma aureolatum, Amblyomma coelebs, Amblyomma ovale, Amblyomma rotundatum, Amblyomma varium, Haemaphysalis juxtakochi, and Ornithodoros hasei. The only tick species previously reported for Espírito Santo, but not found in the present study, is A. longirostre. A total of 194 ticks of 7 species were tested for rickettsial infection. Three Rickettsia species were detected: Rickettsia bellii in A. aureolatum, Rickettsia rhipicephali in H. juxtakochi, and Rickettsia amblyommii in A. humerale. The present study increases the tick fauna of Espírito Santo to 20 species (29% of the Brazilian tick fauna). Introduction: The priority of Pilates is to obtain physical and mental health, including flexibility, in a secure and balanced way., Aim: To verify the change in the quality of life of practitioners of the Pilates method., Methodology: Descriptive observational study of 74 Pilates practitioners divided into 3 groups: practitioner for up to three months; practitioner for more than 1 year; and ex-practitioners. The quality of life analysis was performed using the self-administered questionnaire, SF-36. The comparison between groups was made by ANOVA one-way, then an analysis by post-hoc Scheffé, with a significance level of p < 0.05., Result: The group of experienced practitioners showed better results in the dimensions of physical function (mean 86.37 points; p < 0.01), general health (mean 29.48 points; p < 0.001) and mental health (mean 43.59 points; p < 0.02) of quality of life., Conclusion: Pilates was associated with the improvement of quality of life., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. The reaction of 1,3-cyclohexadione with 2-aminobenzoic acid has produced the 2-(3-oxocyclohex-1-enyl)benzoic acid (HOBz). Subsequent reactions of the ligand with organotin chlorides led to [Me(2)Sn(OBz)O](2) (1), [Bu(2)Sn(OBz)O](2) (2), [Ph(2)Sn(OBz)O](2) (3), [Me(3)Sn(OBz)] (4), [Bu(3)Sn(OBz)] (5) and [Ph(3)Sn(OBz)] (6). All complexes have been fully characterized. In addition the structure of complexes (2) and (4) have been authenticated by X-ray crystallography. The biological activity of all derivatives has been screened against Cryptococcus neoformans and Candida albicans. In addition we have performed toxicological testes employing human kidney cell. The complexes (3), (5) and (6) displayed the best values of inhibition of the fungus growing, superior to ketoconazole. The lepidopterans Platynota rostrana (Walker) (Tortricidae) and Phidotricha erigens Raganot (Pyralidae) have been found frequently in citrus groves in São Paulo State in recent years. Since in Brazil, the fertility cycle of these two species is largely unknown, as are details of the damage wrought by them in crops, this research studied these aspects of the two species, which were kept under laboratory conditions (temperature 25 +/- 2 degrees C, 70 +/- 10% RH, 14 h photophase) and on an artificial diet. The duration of the biological cycle (egg-adult) for P. rostrana was 38.3 days and total viability was 44.0%; for P. erigens these values were 32.5 days and 63.6%, respectively. Both species showed five larval instars. Females of P. rostrana laid an average of 308 eggs, whereas those of P. erigens laid an average of 106 eggs. In both species, female pupae were heavier than males. Male and female longevity for both species was nearly 10 days. Based on the data obtained, the artificial diet produced better results in P. rostrana than in P. erigens. If these species, which have the potential to reach pest status in the citrus groves of São Paulo State, could be reared on an artificial diet, research on their control by alternative methods would be easier.

The reaction of ammonium pyrrolidinedithiocarbamate, [NH4{S2CN(CH2)4}], with SnCl2, [Sn(C6H5)2Cl2], [Sn(C6H5)3Cl], [Sn(C4H9)2Cl2] and [Sn(C6H11)3Cl] produced in good yield the compounds [Sn{S2CN(CH2)4}2Cl2] (1), [Sn{S2CN(CH2)4}2Ph2] (2), [Sn{S2CN(CH2)4}Ph3] (3), [Sn{S2CN(CH2)4}2 n-Bu2] (4) and [Sn{S2CN(CH2)4}Cy3] (5). The complexes were characterised by infrared, multinuclear NMR (1H, 13C{1H} and 119Sn{1H}) and 119Sn Mössbauer spectroscopies. In addition, the crystal structure of 4 was determined by X-ray crystallography. The in vitro antifungal activity of the tin(IV) complexes as well of the ligand was performed on human pathogenic fungi, Candida albicans, in concentrations of 0.025; 0.050; 0.100; 0.200; 0.400; 0.800; 1.600 and 3.200 mM. The microorganism presented resistance to the dithiocarbamate ligand and all tin(IV) complexes tested were actives. The highest activity was found for compounds 1 and 4.
