Abstract

Foram analisadas amostras de quiabo dos municípios de Caruaru e Vitória de Santo Antão, em Pernambuco, assim como nos municípios de Ceará-Mirim, Macaíba e Extremoz no estado do Rio Grande do Norte. A aplicação de dois métodos de análise exploratória de dados: Análise de Componentes principais - PCA e Análise de Agrupamentos Hierárquicos - HCA permitiu a discriminação geográfica do quiabo proveniente dos dois estados. Samples of okra from Caruaru and Vitória of Santo Antão, in the State of Pernambuco, and Ceará-Mirim, Macaíba and Extremoz in the State of Rio Grande do Norte have been analysed. Two different methods were applied in the data treatment allowing to geographically discriminate samples from different origins: Principal Component Analysis - PCA and Hierarquical Cluster Analysis - HCA.

8. Wireless Sensor Network for Radiometric Detection and Assessment of Partial Discharge in High‐Voltage Equipment

Abstract

Monitoring of partial discharge (PD) activity within high‐voltage electrical environments is increasingly used for the assessment of insulation condition. Traditional measurement techniques employ technologies that either require off‐line installation or have high power consumption and are hence costly. A wireless sensor network is proposed that utilizes only received signal strength to locate areas of PD activity within a high‐voltage electricity substation. The network comprises low‐power and low‐cost radiometric sensor nodes which receive the radiation propagated from a source of PD. Results are reported from several empirical tests performed within a large indoor environment and a substation environment using a network of nine sensor nodes. A portable PD source emulator was placed at multiple locations within the network. Signal strength measured by the nodes is reported via WirelessHART to a data collection hub where it is processed using a location algorithm. The results obtained place the measured location within 2 m of the actual source location. 18. Biotypes and serotypes of Haemophilus influenzae from patients with meningitis in the city of São Paulo, Brazil

Abstract

A total of 1,094 Haemophilus influenzae isolates from cerebrospinal fluid were examined by biochemical and serological means. Most of them belonged to biotype I (70.9%) and to serotype b (99.4%). The relationship of biotypes I and II to the ages of the patients was shown to be significant (P < 0.001).

Abstract

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a major agent of hospital infections worldwide. In Brazil, a multiresistant MRSA lineage (ST239-SCCmecIIIA), the so-called Brazilian epidemic clone (BEC), has predominated in all regions. However, an increase in nosocomial infections caused by non-multiresistant MRSA clones has recently been observed. In the present study, 45 clinical isolates of MRSA obtained from a university hospital located in Natal city, Brazil, were identified by standard laboratory methods and molecularly characterized using staphylococcal chromosome cassette mec (SCCmec) typing and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was carried out using CLSI methods. The MRSA isolates studied displayed a total of 8 different pulsed-field gel electrophoresis patterns (types A to H) with predominance (73%) of pattern A (BEC-related). However, MRSA harboring SCCmec type IV were also identified, 3 (7%) of which were genetically related to the pediatric clone--USA800 (ST5-SCCmecIV). In addition, we found a considerable genetic diversity within BEC isolates. MRSA displaying SCCmecIV are frequently susceptible to the majority of non-beta-lactam antibiotics. However, emergence of multiresistant variants of USA800 was detected.
