Liquid argon time projection chamber technology is an attractive choice for large neutrino detectors, as it provides a high-resolution active target and it is expected to be scalable to very large masses. Consequently, it has been chosen as the technology for the first module of the DUNE far detector. However, the fiducial mass required for "far detectors" of the next generation of neutrino oscillation experiments far exceeds what has been demonstrated so far. Scaling to this larger mass, as well as the requirement for underground construction places a number of additional constraints on the design. A prototype 35-ton cryostat was built at Fermi National Acccelerator Laboratory to test the functionality of the components foreseen to be used in a very large far detector. The Phase I run, completed in early 2014, demonstrated that liquid argon could be maintained at sufficient purity in a membrane cryostat. A time projection chamber was installed for the Phase II run, which collected data in February and March of 2016. The Phase II run was a test of the modular anode plane assemblies with wrapped wires, cold readout electronics, and integrated photon detection systems. While the details of the design do not match exactly those chosen for the DUNE far detector, the 35-ton TPC prototype is a demonstration of the functionality of the basic components. Measurements are performed using the Phase II data to extract signal and noise characteristics and to align the detector components. A measurement of the electron lifetime is presented, and a novel technique for measuring a track's position based on pulse properties is described., Comment: 28 pages, 12 figures, accepted by JINST

Adaptive Optics (AO) is an innovative technique that substantially improves the optical performance of ground-based telescopes. The SOAR Adaptive Module (SAM) is a laser-assisted AO instrument, designed to compensate ground-layer atmospheric turbulence in near-IR and visible wavelengths over a large Field of View. Here we detail our proposal to upgrade SAM, dubbed SAMplus, that is focused on enhancing its performance in visible wavelengths and increasing the instrument reliability. As an illustration, for a seeing of 0.62 arcsec at 500 nm and a typical turbulence profile, current SAM improves the PSF FWHM to 0.40 arcsec, and with the upgrade we expect to deliver images with a FWHM of $\approx0.34$ arcsec -- up to 0.23 arcsec FWHM PSF under good seeing conditions. Such capabilities will be fully integrated with the latest SAM instruments, putting SOAR in an unique position as observatory facility., Comment: To appear in Proc. ProtoDUNE-SP is the single-phase DUNE Far Detector prototype that is under construction and will be operated at the CERN Neutrino Platform (NP) starting in 2018. ProtoDUNE-SP, a crucial part of the DUNE effort towards the construction of the first DUNE 10-kt fiducial mass far detector module (17 kt total LAr mass), is a significant experiment in its own right. With a total liquid argon (LAr) mass of 0.77 kt, it represents the largest monolithic single-phase LArTPC detector to be built to date. This document presents the Conceptual Design Report (CDR) put forward by an international neutrino community to pursue the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment at the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF/DUNE), a groundbreaking science experiment for long-baseline neutrino oscillation studies and for neutrino astrophysics and nucleon decay searches. The DUNE far detector will be a very large modular liquid argon time-projection chamber (LArTPC) located deep underground, coupled to the LBNF multi-megawatt wide-band neutrino beam. DUNE will also have a high-resolution and high-precision near detector.

We study the Shannon entropy of the cluster size distribution in classical as well as explosive percolation, in order to estimate the uncertainty in the sizes of randomly chosen clusters. At the critical point the cluster size distribution is a power-law, i.e. there are clusters of all sizes, so one expects the information entropy to attain a maximum. As expected, our results show that the entropy attains a maximum at this point for classical percolation. Surprisingly, for explosive percolation the maximum entropy does not match the critical point. Moreover, we show that it is possible determine the critical point without using the conventional order parameter, just analysing the entropy's derivatives., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

We address the general problem of how best to attack and destroy a network by node removal, given limited or no prior information about the edges. We consider a family of strategies in which nodes are randomly chosen, but not removed. Instead, a random acquaintance (i.e., a first neighbour) of the chosen node is removed from the network. By assigning an informal cost to the information about the network structure, we show using cost-benefit analysis that acquaintance removal is the optimal strategy to destroy networks efficiently., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures

The zenital dependence of muon flux which reaches the earth's surface is well known as proportional to cos^n(\theta). Generally, for practical purposes and simplicity in calculations, n is taken as 2. However, compilations of measurements show dependence on the geographical location of the experiments as well as the muons energy range. Since analytical solutions appear to be increasingly less necessary because of the higher accessibility to low cost computational power, accurate and precise determination of the value of the exponent n, under different conditions, can be useful in the necessary calculations to estimate signals and backgrounds, either for terrestrial and underground experiments. In this work we discuss a method for measuring n using a simple muon telescope and the results obtained for measurements taken at Campinas (SP), Brazil. After validation of the method, we intend to extend the measurements for different geographic locations due to the simplicity of the method, and thus collect more values of n that currently exist in compilations of general data on cosmic rays., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, ICRC - 2013 proceedings

The provision of accurate wet tropospheric corrections (WTC), accounting for the delay of the radar pulses caused mostly by the atmospheric water vapor in the altimeter‐range observations, is pivotal for the full exploitation of altimeter‐derived surface heights. The WTC is best retrieved by measurements from Microwave Radiometers (MWR) on board the same altimeter mission. However, these instruments fail to provide valid WTC over land and ice and under rainy conditions. The GNSS‐derived Path Delay Plus (GPD+) algorithm has been designed to provide WTC over these surfaces where the onboard MWR WTC is invalid. This study focuses on the estimation of enhanced GPD+ WTC for the Copernicus Sentinel‐3A and Sentinel‐3B satellites, for the latest Baseline Collection 005.02 (BC005.2), spanning the period since the beginning of the missions until March 2023. GPD+ corrections are being provided operationally since 2022 and have been adopted as the default WTC in the calculation of the sea level anomaly (SLA). Compared to previous versions, the BC005.2 GPD+ WTC features improved data combination procedures, possesses a larger percentage of points estimated from observations, a better intermission alignment and reduced systematic differences among ascending and descending passes. Overall, GPD+ WTC are consistent, calibrated corrections, valid over all points present in the Non Time Critical marine product, allowing to recover, on average, about 17% of the altimeter observations with valid SLA, which otherwise, most of them would be rejected. Impacts of these WTC are most significant over coastal and inland water regions, at high latitudes and during rain events. Plain Language Summary: Satellite radar altimetry is a powerful technique to measure the Earth's topography during day and night, in all weather conditions. It uses radar pulses to measure the distance between the satellite and the surface beneath the satellite, from which the height of the mean sea level, rivers and lakes, for example, can be obtained. The atmosphere affects the propagation by delaying the signal and increasing the measured trajectory. The effect of the atmospheric water vapor is particularly difficult to model, since it is highly variable. This study concerns with a method to estimate the so‐called wet tropospheric correction, which accounts for the water vapor effects in the altimeter measurements. Over open ocean, the correction is usually based on the measurements from a dedicated instrument collocated on the same satellite, which fails to provide valid information over non‐water surfaces. The method, called GNSS‐derived Path Delay Plus (GPD+), aims to fill the gaps left by the previous instrumental correction. The study describes the latest version of the GPD+ wet tropospheric corrections for the Copernicus Sentinel‐3 altimeter products. It is demonstrated that these corrections can extend the altimeter observations to important regions such as coastal regions, rivers and lakes and high latitudes. Novel biocompatible systems suitable for the controlled release of active ingredients are under the spotlight within the last few years. The present investigation focuses on the preparation of nanoparticles (NPs) based on the amphiphilic copolymer pullulan‐graft‐poly(Z‐L‐lysine) bearing different amounts of lysine (10, 20, and 30 wt%), and on the evaluation of their ensuing viability to encapsulate the hydrophobic nonsteroidal anti‐inflammatory drug indomethacin (INDO). The copolymers are synthesized by ring‐opening polymerization, characterized by NMR and FTIR, and their critical aggregation concentration is determined by fluorescence. The NPs are prepared with and without INDO using different copolymer/solvent ratios and INDO/copolymer ratios. The hydrodynamic diameter and polydispersity of the NP suspensions are monitored by dynamic light scattering for 30 days. Their sizes vary between 208 and 338 nm, and some reach the micrometric range (19–73 μm). INDO‐free NPs are identified as spherical‐shaped by atomic force microscopy. Two formulations are tested in terms of encapsulation efficiency (EE = 43%–89%), and the drug crystallinity (DC = 7%–27%) which is determined by differential scanning calorimetry, indicating a reduction with respect to pristine INDO. The results suggest that the copolymers prepared herewith have potential to be applied as carriers for new drug delivery systems of class II drugs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
