This paper presents the validation of a computational tool that serves to obtain continuous measurements of moving objects. The software uses techniques of computer vision, pattern recognition and optical flow, to enable tracking of objects in videos, generating data trajectory, velocity, acceleration and angular movement. The program was applied to track a ball around a simple pendulum. The methodology used to validate it, taking as a basis to compare the values measured by the program, as well as the theoretical values expected according to the model of a simple pendulum. The experiment is appropriate to the method because it was built within the limits of the linear harmonic oscillator and energy losses due to friction had been minimized, making it the most ideal possible. The results indicate that the tool is sensitive and accurate. Deviations of less than a millimeter to the extent of the trajectory, ensures the applicability of the software on physics, whether in research or in teaching topics., Comment: Accepted for publication at the RBEF - Revista Brasileira de Ensino de F\'isica

This paper is framed by Nick Zepke's, Vicki Trowler's, and Paul Trowler's concept of student engagement being "chaotic", suffering from "indigestion" and "fuzziness". This study was conducted at a UK higher education institution that recently moved to a "block and blend" delivery approach. We investigated what students and staff think engagement looks like in an intensive block and blend learning context. Data were gathered from students and staff via an online survey, which consisted of both scaled and openended questions. Findings are synthesised in an elemental map, providing a comparison of students and staff perceptions of engagement. Specifically, students and staff thought engagement in an intensive block and blend context entailed participation and active learning; a mindset that included enthusiasm, interest, focus, and enjoyment; timely completion of assessments; relationships with peers and tutors; doing more than required, such as completing extra readings; and accessing help and support. Participants also identified attendance as an indicator of student engagement and determined that the university has a responsibility to create learning environments to foster student engagement. Overall, the study findings point to elements of student engagement that may be designed into intensive block and blend learning environments. These approaches are also relevant to other similar intensive learning contexts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The recent increase in the number of higher education institutions adopting block teaching has prompted questions about the appropriateness of assessment methods that were commonly used in a semesterised delivery model. This paper explores student and faculty perceptions of summative assessment methods in a block and blend mode of delivery at a higher education institution in the United Kingdom. In this study, we used a convergent mixed methods approach to explore student and faculty perceptions of different assessment methods as accurate evaluations of learning using surveys, combining Likert-type and open-ended questions. The findings highlight how traditional, single assessment methods occurring at the end of a block were perceived as less accurate in evaluating learning when compared to multiple smaller assessments that occur throughout a block. The thematic analysis revealed the latter was perceived as allowing for a broader range of skills to be evaluated while simultaneously facilitating effective workload management and timely feedback. These outcomes indicate the need for assessment redesign that considers the characteristics of a block and blend mode of delivery and illuminates the shared perception of students and faculty that multiple smaller assessments are more accurate evaluations of learning. Further research with larger, more diverse samples, accommodating for different fields of study, could further our understanding of effective assessment methods and inform our practice in a block and blend mode of delivery. - Abstract
This paper presents industrial insights into on-line robust local tap changer runaway inhibition issues in renewable distributed energy resources (DERs)-rich reconfigurable distribution networks with step-voltage regulators (SVRs). Based on the industrial insights, an algorithm is proposed for on-line robust local bi-directional inhibition of runaway events from only one tap change with robustness guarantees and without the need for coordinated test tap changes in cascade SVRs. The main contributions of the paper are the innovative application of the algorithm on on-line robust local bi-directional inhibition of tap changer runaway and the introduction to the industrial insights. The accuracy and robustness of the proposed algorithm are verified by time-series flow power simulation tests conducted on two test networks, with noise and gross errors in measurements, using extensive Monte Carlo simulations. Uncoordinated operation of test tap changes in cascade SVRs is examined through case studies on an actual long rural distribution network. Finally, the effect of photovoltaic (PV) power output variability on the proposed algorithm performance is assessed.

- Abstract
AbstractIntimate partner violence (IPV) is simultaneously assumed as a serious crime and a major public health issue, having recurrences as one of its main characteristics and, consequently, re-entries of some alleged offenders in the criminal justice system (CJS). The main goal of this study is to assess if in cases of female victims of IPV, violence decreases after the first entry of the alleged offender in the CJS. A retrospective study was performed based on the analysis of police reports of alleged cases of IPV during a 4-year period. The final sample (n = 1 488) was divided into two groups according to the number of entries in the CJS (single or multiple) followed by a comparative approach. Results suggest that violence decreases after the first entry of alleged offenders in the CJS. Re-entries were found in only 15.5% of the cases but they were accountable for 3.3 times more crimes on average. Besides, victims of recidivism presented more injuries and required more medical care. Thus, a small group of alleged offenders seems to be more violent and accountable for most of the IPV crimes registered in the CJS suggesting that regardless of legal sanctions aiming to deter violence, these measures may not be enough for a certain group of offenders. This study sustains the need for a predictive model to quantify the risk of repeated IPV cases within the Portuguese population.

- Abstract
Campomanesiacomprises approximately 45 species, and 18 of them are organized into three informal morphological complexes. Among these, the “C. xanthocarpacomplex” includes nine accepted species displaying delimitation problems, especially in C. adamantium(Cambess.) O.Berg, C. eugenioides(Cambes.) D.Legrand ex Landrum and C. xanthocarpa(Mart.) O.Berg. As there are no phylogenies available for the genus, we seek to understand whether the morphological similarities observed between the cited taxa may be congruent with molecular data. Thus, we generated sequences of the internal transcribed spacer of the ribosomal nuclear DNA (ITS) from 32 samples of Campomanesiaand nine belonging to other genera of neotropical Myrtaceae. Phylogenetic analyses using Maximum Parsimony and Bayesian Inference produced similar topologies, which indicate that the “C. xanthocarpacomplex” is not monophyletic. Otherwise, the taxa previously assigned to this complex correspond to two distinct lineages highly supported, here designated as the “C. xanthocarpaGroup” and “C. eugenioidesGroup.” The use of multiple accessions of these species also provided taxonomic insights for the recognition of C. littoralisD.Legand and C. repandaO.Berg, as well as the separation of C. rhombeafrom C. xanthocarpa.

Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) has a number of beneficial health effects, including decreases in cancer incidence and atherosclerosis severity. However, dietary CLA intake is relatively low to promote the desired physiological effects. The CLA bacterial production in foods is a technological challenge besides the ability of probiotics to produce CLA is currently inconclusive. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to screen potential probiotic LAB strains isolated from Brazilian kefir grains able to produce CLA during the fermentation of whole cow milk. The selected strain, Lactococcus lactis ssp. cremoris MRS 47, increased CLA and polyunsaturated fatty acid content while at the same time significantly reducing saturated fatty acids and the thrombogenic index in fermented milk. These findings highlight the possibility of enriching CLA content in a dairy-fermented product if LAB were pre-selected by their capacity to produce CLA from milk fat, in what seems to be a strain-dependent ability. - Abstract
Many single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the non-recombining region of the human Y chromosome have been described in the last decade. High-coverage sequencing has helped to characterize new SNPs, which has in turn increased the level of detail in paternal phylogenies. However, these paternal lineages still provide insufficient information on population history and demography, especially for Native Americans. The present study aimed to identify informative paternal sublineages derived from the main founder lineage of the Americas—haplogroup Q-L54—in a sample of 1841 native South Americans. For this purpose, we used a Y-chromosomal genotyping multiplex platform and conventional genotyping methods to validate 34 new SNPs that were identified in the present study by sequencing, together with many Y-SNPs previously described in the literature. We updated the haplogroup Q phylogeny and identified two new Q-M3 and three new Q-L54*(xM3) sublineages defined by five informative SNPs, designated SA04, SA05, SA02, SA03 and SA29. Within the Q-M3, sublineage Q-SA04 was mostly found in individuals from ethnic groups belonging to the Tukanoan linguistic family in the northwest Amazon, whereas sublineage Q-SA05 was found in Peruvian and Bolivian Amazon ethnic groups. Within Q-L54*, the derived sublineages Q-SA03 and Q-SA02 were exclusively found among Coyaima individuals (Cariban linguistic family) from Colombia, while Q-SA29 was found only in Maxacali individuals (Jean linguistic family) from southeast Brazil. Furthermore, we validated the usefulness of several published SNPs among indigenous South Americans. This new Y chromosome haplogroup Q phylogeny offers an informative paternal genealogy to investigate the pre-Columbian history of South America.

Extraintestinal pathogenic E. coli (ExPEC) is the most frequent etiological agent of urinary tract infections (UTIs). Particular evolutionary successful lineages are associated with severe UTIs and higher incidences of multidrug resistance. Most of the resistance genes are acquired by horizontal transfer of plasmids and other mobile genetic elements (MGEs), and this process has been associated with the successful dissemination of particular lineages. Here, we identified the presence of MGEs and their role in virulence and resistance profiles of isolates obtained from the urine of hospitalized patients in Brazil. Isolates belonging to the successful evolutionary lineages of sequence type (ST) 131, ST405, and ST648 were found to be multidrug-resistant, while those belonging to ST69 and ST73 were often not. Among the ST131, ST405, and ST648 isolates with a resistant phenotype, a high number of mainly IncFII plasmids was identified. The plasmids contained resistance cassettes, and these were also found within phage-related sequences and the chromosome of the isolates. The resistance cassettes were found to harbor several resistance genes, including bla CTX-M-15. In addition, in ST131 isolates, diverse pathogenicity islands similar to those found in highly virulent ST73 isolates were detected. Also, a new genomic island associated with several virulence genes was identified in ST69 and ST131 isolates. In addition, several other MGEs present in the ST131 reference strain EC958 were identified in our isolates, most of them exclusively in ST131 isolates. In contrast, genomic islands present in this reference strain were only partially present or completely absent in our ST131 isolates. Of all isolates studied, ST73 and ST131 isolates had the most similar virulence profile. Overall, no clear association was found between the presence of specific MGEs and virulence profiles. Furthermore, the interplay between virulence and resistance by acquiring MGEs seemed to be lineage dependent. Although the acquisition of IncF plasmids, specific PAIs, GIs, and other MGEs seemed to be involved in the success of some lineages, it cannot explain the success of different lineages, also indicating other (host) factors are involved in this process. Nevertheless, the detection, identification, and surveillance of lineage-specific MGEs may be useful to monitor (new) emerging clones. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
For a number of years physicians practicing in the state of São Paulo, and especially in the city of Franca, reported cases of a rare dermatosis affecting the entire cutaneous surface of each patient and ending in death. The first observations were presented before the Seventh Congress of Medicine and Surgery at Bello Horizonte in 1912 by Ulisses Paranhos and Luciano Gaulberto. Perhaps the thesis of Paes Leme, written in 1902 under the title of "Tokelau," concerned the same condition. Later studies by Lindenberg and Olimpio da Fonseca Filho settled the matter by establishing in a definite manner that this dermatosis is no other than pemphigus foliaceus, popularly known in Brazil as fogo salvagem (wild fire). In 1937 and 1938 I made a special study of this type of pemphigus and proposed a classification of its clinical variants, ranging from the abortive to the most advanced types. Pemphigus foliaceus may

- Abstract
In this work, hydrotalcite (Mg6Al2(CO3)(OH)16•4H2O, HT-CO32-) and an hydrotalcite-like (HT-CO32--OH-) compounds were characterized and used in the fabrication of composite membranes for alkaline fuel cells. HT-CO32--OH- was prepared from commercial hydrotalcite through anion exchange. The materials were characterized by X-Ray Diffraction, Infrared Spectroscopy, CHNS Elemental Analysis, N2 sorption and Dynamic Vapor Sorption. Composite membranes were prepared by casting method using a styrene/ethylene/butylene copolymer as binder. Water up-take and OH- ion conductivity measurements were performed on two independent set of composite membranes. The partial exchange of carbonate by hydroxyl anions increases the water content in the clay gallery. Higher values of water up-take and ion conductivity were measured for the composite membranes containing the HT-CO32--OH- form.
