Abstract

Over the past couple of years, the demand for facial recognition systems has increased in both the public and private sectors to enhance safety and security. Many researchers argue that the irresponsible design and use of facial recognition technologies threaten to violate the right to privacy, freedom of expression, and justice, instead of promoting security. This paper, using the Critical Theory of Technology of Andrew Feenberg, discusses the development of facial recognition systems in Brazil. This work was conceived under the aegis of the Critical social theory that serves as a framework for analyzing and reimagining technological systems considering that technologies are not separate from society but are adapted to their social and political environment. The research has an exploratory nature and a review was conducted to find related papers. Using critical and decolonial theories, the authors revealed otherwise hidden agendas, power, and political assumptions to be deeply considered to understand the harms generated by facial recognition systems in Brazil. This paper’s main contribution is a social critique, whereby the oppositions, conflicts, and contradictions of facial recognition technology are brought to light. This study raises broader questions about the social and political nature of facial recognition development, such as the extent to which hidden agendas and lack of transparency inhibit, repress, and constrain civil society participation.

Abstract

We propose experimental measurements of the logarithmic negativity, which quantifies quantum correlations using Gouy phase measurements in an asymmetric double-slit interference experiment for twin photons. This is possible because both quantities have analogous dependence with the spatial confinement by the slits and enables one to manipulate the portion of entanglement by the Gouy phase. In order to obtain those measurements, we need to work in a regime where the position correlations between particles are strong, therefore we investigate such correlations for biphotons. Since we would like to handle entanglement quantifiers through the Gouy phase, we analyze the Gouy phase difference for two entangled photons in an asymmetric double-slit interference experiment.

24. Coherence dynamics induced by attenuation and amplification Gaussian channels

Abstract

Quantum Gaussian channels play a key role in quantum information theory. In particular, the attenuation and amplification channels are useful to describe noise and decoherence effects on continuous variables systems. They are directly associated to the beam splitter and two-mode squeezing operations, which have operational relevance in quantum protocols with bosonic models. An important property of these channels is that they are Gaussian completely positive maps and the action on a general input state depends on the parameters characterizing the channels. In this work, we study the coherence dynamics introduced by these channels on input Gaussian states. We derive explicit expressions for the coherence depending on the parameters describing the channels. By assuming a displaced thermal state with initial coherence as input state, for the attenuation case it is observed a revival of the coherence as a function of the transmissivity coefficient, whereas for the amplification channel the coherence reaches asymptotic values depending on the gain coefficient. Further, we obtain the entropy production for these class of operations, showing that it can be reduced by controlling the parameters involved. We write a simple expression for computing the entropy production due to the coherence for both channels. This can be useful to simulate many processes in quantum thermodynamics, as finite-time driving on bosonic modes.

Abstract

R18‐14147 (Reg. no. GP‐528, PI 705143) is a high‐protein conventional soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] germplasm of maturity group Mid‐IV developed and released by the University of Arkansas System – Division of Agriculture Research & Extension in 2023. The germplasm is an F3:4 selection from the cross LG10‐3671‐1 × R09‐430. Plants of R18‐14147 have an indeterminate growth habit with purple flowers, gray pubescence, brown pod wall, and imperfect black hilum. Across 28 environments in Arkansas (2019–2022), R18‐14147 yield averaged 4482 kg ha−1, with broad adaptability and yield stability. Seed of R18‐14147 contains on average 429 g kg−1 and 191 g kg−1 of protein and oil on a dry weight basis, respectively, and seed weight is 15.2 g 100 seeds−1. The average seed protein content of this line is 8%–27% higher than the average protein content of the check cultivars used in various trials to evaluate R18‐14147. Additionally, R18‐14147 has been identified as resistant to stem canker. R18‐14147 presents soybean growers in the mid‐southern United States with a promising germplasm alternative combining high yield potential and elevated seed protein content for alternative crop rotation in herbicide‐tolerant cultivar systems, offering potentially seed‐saving cost benefits and serving as a valuable germplasm for new cultivar development. 48. General continuum approach for dissipative systems of repulsive particles

Abstract

We propose a general coarse-graining method to derive a continuity equation that describes any dissipative system of repulsive particles interacting through short-ranged potentials. In our approach, the effect of particle-particle correlations is incorporated to the overall balance of energy, and a non-linear diffusion equation is obtained to represent the overdamped dynamics. In particular, when the repulsive interaction potential is a short-ranged power-law, our approach reveals a distinctive correspondence between particle-particle energy and the generalized thermostatistics of Tsallis for any non-positive value of the entropic index q. Our methodology can also be applied to microscopic models of superconducting vortices and complex plasma, where particle-particle correlations are pronounced at low concentrations. The resulting continuum descriptions provide elucidating and useful insights on the microdynamical behavior of these physical systems.
