Abstract

Three galaxy clusters selected from the XXL X-ray survey at high redshift and low mass (z ~ 1 and M500 ~ 1 – 2 × 1014 M⊙) were observed with NIKA2 to image their Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect (SZ) signal. They all present an SZ morphology, together with the comparison with X-ray and optical data, that indicates dynamical activity related to merging events. Despite their disturbed intracluster medium, their high redshifts, and their low masses, the three clusters follow remarkably well the pressure profile and the SZ flux-mass relation expected from standard evolution. This suggests that the physics that drives cluster formation is already in place at z ~ 1 down to M500 ~ 1014 M⊙.

La elastolisis de la dermis media (EDM) es una afección rara y adquirida del tejido elástico, caracterizada histológicamente por la disminución o ausencia de fibras elásticas en la porción media de la dermis. Afecta con mayor frecuencia a mujeres jóvenes, es asintomática y no se acompaña de compromiso extra cutáneo. Se presenta el caso de una paciente con finas arrugas en piel de ambas axilas y región lumbar.

Abstract

The thermodynamical properties of the intracluster medium (ICM) are driven by scale-free gravitational collapse, but they also reflect the rich astrophysical processes at play in galaxy clusters. At low masses ($\sim 10^{14}$ M$_{\odot}$) and high redshift ($z \gtrsim 1$), these properties remain poorly constrained observationally, due to the difficulty in obtaining resolved and sensitive data. This paper aims at investigating the inner structure of the ICM as seen through the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect in this regime of mass and redshift. Focus is set on the thermal pressure profile and the scaling relation between SZ flux and mass, namely the $Y_{\rm SZ} - M$ scaling relation. The three galaxy clusters XLSSC~072 ($z=1.002$), XLSSC~100 ($z=0.915$), and XLSSC~102 ($z=0.969$), with $M_{500} \sim 2 \times 10^{14}$ M$_{\odot}$, were selected from the XXL X-ray survey and observed with the NIKA2 millimeter camera to image their SZ signal. XMM-Newton X-ray data were used in complement to the NIKA2 data to derive masses based on the $Y_X - M$ relation and the hydrostatic equilibrium. The SZ images of the three clusters, along with the X-ray and optical data, indicate dynamical activity related to merging events. The pressure profile is consistent with that expected for morphologically disturbed systems, with a relatively flat core and a shallow outer slope. Despite significant disturbances in the ICM, the three high-redshift low-mass clusters follow remarkably well the $Y_{\rm SZ}-M$ relation expected from standard evolution. These results indicate that the dominant physics that drives cluster evolution is already in place by $z \sim 1$, at least for systems with masses above $M_{500} \sim 10^{14}$ M$_{\odot}$., Comment: 24 pages, published in A&A. Abstract

Engineered dissipative reservoirs have the potential to steer many-body quantum systems toward correlated steady states useful for quantum simulation of high-temperature superconductivity or quantum magnetism. Using up to 49 superconducting qubits, we prepared low-energy states of the transverse-field Ising model through coupling to dissipative auxiliary qubits. In one dimension, we observed long-range quantum correlations and a ground-state fidelity of 0.86 for 18 qubits at the critical point. In two dimensions, we found mutual information that extends beyond nearest neighbors. Lastly, by coupling the system to auxiliaries emulating reservoirs with different chemical potentials, we explored transport in the quantum Heisenberg model. Our results establish engineered dissipation as a scalable alternative to unitary evolution for preparing entangled many-body states on noisy quantum processors.

Abstract

Undesired coupling to the surrounding environment destroys long-range correlations on quantum processors and hinders the coherent evolution in the nominally available computational space. This incoherent noise is an outstanding challenge to fully leverage the computation power of near-term quantum processors. It has been shown that benchmarking Random Circuit Sampling (RCS) with Cross-Entropy Benchmarking (XEB) can provide a reliable estimate of the effective size of the Hilbert space coherently available. The extent to which the presence of noise can trivialize the outputs of a given quantum algorithm, i.e. making it spoofable by a classical computation, is an unanswered question. Here, by implementing an RCS algorithm we demonstrate experimentally that there are two phase transitions observable with XEB, which we explain theoretically with a statistical model. The first is a dynamical transition as a function of the number of cycles and is the continuation of the anti-concentration point in the noiseless case. The second is a quantum phase transition controlled by the error per cycle; to identify it analytically and experimentally, we create a weak link model which allows varying the strength of noise versus coherent evolution. Furthermore, by presenting an RCS experiment with 67 qubits at 32 cycles, we demonstrate that the computational cost of our experiment is beyond the capabilities of existing classical supercomputers, even when accounting for the inevitable presence of noise. Our experimental and theoretical work establishes the existence of transitions to a stable computationally complex phase that is reachable with current quantum processors.

Abstract

An important measure of the development of quantum computing platforms has been the simulation of increasingly complex physical systems. Prior to fault-tolerant quantum computing, robust error mitigation strategies are necessary to continue this growth. Here, we study physical simulation within the seniority-zero electron pairing subspace, which affords both a computational stepping stone to a fully correlated model, and an opportunity to validate recently introduced ``purification-based'' error-mitigation strategies. We compare the performance of error mitigation based on doubling quantum resources in time (echo verification) or in space (virtual distillation), on up to $20$ qubits of a superconducting qubit quantum processor. We observe a reduction of error by one to two orders of magnitude below less sophisticated techniques (e.g. post-selection); the gain from error mitigation is seen to increase with the system size. Employing these error mitigation strategies enables the implementation of the largest variational algorithm for a correlated chemistry system to-date. Extrapolating performance from these results allows us to estimate minimum requirements for a beyond-classical simulation of electronic structure. We find that, despite the impressive gains from purification-based error mitigation, significant hardware improvements will be required for classically intractable variational chemistry simulations., Comment: 10 pages, 13 page supplementary material, 12 figures. Este artículo presenta la exploración de la evolución de la vulnerabilidad frente amenazas asociadas con deslizamientos e inundaciones en la Zona Nororiental de Medellín entre 1960 y 1990, vinculando los procesos de poblamiento con los enfoques de planificación y las políticas para el hábitat popular en la ciudad, que han potenciado la configuración de escenarios urbanos vulnerables. El abordaje del estudio de caso mostró que la vulnerabilidad se desplazó durante el periodo de estudio, siguiendo las trayectorias del poblamiento y de la expansión de la ciudad en función de características propias de la adaptación al entorno por parte de los pobladores, de procesos regionales y dinámicas influenciadas por políticas estatales de orden municipal. Debido a que la vulnerabilidad tuvo una tendencia acumulativa durante el periodo en estudio, se interpreta como un impacto ambiental de los procesos que inciden en su configuración, que no es puntual, ni espacial, ni temporalmente y tampoco obedece a una lógica de causa – efecto, sino que es complejo y está conectado con otras manifestaciones ambientales urbanas.

Abstract

Recent years have seen the discovery of a chiral spin liquid state - a bosonic analogue of a fractional Quantum Hall state first put forward by Kalmeyer and Laughlin in 1987 - in several deformations of the Heisenberg model on the Kagome lattice. Here, we apply state-of-the-art numerical techniques to one such model, where breaking of the time-reversal symmetry drives the system into the chiral phase. Our methods allow us to obtain explicit matrix-product state representations of the low-lying excitations of the chiral spin liquid state, including the topologically non-trivial semionic excitation. Abstract

Subsystems of strongly disordered, interacting quantum systems can fail to thermalize because of the phenomenon of many-body localization (MBL). In this article, we explore a tensor network description of the eigenspectra of such systems. Specifically, we will argue that the presence of a complete set of local integrals of motion in MBL implies an efficient representation of the entire spectrum of energy eigenstates with a single tensor network, a \emph{spectral} tensor network. Our results are rigorous for a class of idealized systems related to MBL with integrals of motion of finite support. Abstract

Topological phases in frustrated quantum spin systems have fascinated researchers for decades. One of the earliest proposals for such a phase was the chiral spin liquid put forward by Kalmeyer and Laughlin in 1987 as the bosonic analogue of the fractional quantum Hall effect. Elusive for many years, recent times have finally seen a number of models that realize this phase. However, these models are somewhat artificial and unlikely to be found in realistic materials. Here, we take an important step towards the goal of finding a chiral spin liquid in nature by examining a physically motivated model for a Mott insulator on the Kagome lattice with broken time-reversal symmetry. We first provide a theoretical justification for the emergent chiral spin liquid phase in terms of a network model perspective. Abstract

We investigate the use of matrix product states (MPS) to approximate ground states of critical quantum spin chains with periodic boundary conditions (PBC). We identify two regimes in the (N,D) parameter plane, where N is the size of the spin chain and D is the dimension of the MPS matrices. In the first regime MPS can be used to perform finite size scaling (FSS). In the complementary regime the MPS simulations show instead the clear signature of finite entanglement scaling (FES). In the thermodynamic limit (or large N limit), only MPS in the FSS regime maintain a finite overlap with the exact ground state. This observation has implications on how to correctly perform FSS with MPS, as well as on the performance of recent MPS algorithms for systems with PBC. It also gives clear evidence that critical models can actually be simulated very well with MPS by using the right scaling relations; in the appendix, we give an alternative derivation of the result of Pollmann et al. Tensor network states are used to approximate ground states of local Hamiltonians on a lattice in D spatial dimensions. Different types of tensor network states can be seen to generate different geometries. Matrix product states (MPS) in D=1 dimensions, as well as projected entangled pair states (PEPS) in D>1 dimensions, reproduce the D-dimensional physical geometry of the lattice model; in contrast, the multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA) generates a (D+1)-dimensional holographic geometry. Here we focus on homogeneous tensor networks, where all the tensors in the network are copies of the same tensor, and argue that certain structural properties of the resulting many-body states are preconditioned by the geometry of the tensor network and are therefore largely independent of the choice of variational parameters. Indeed, the asymptotic decay of correlations in homogeneous MPS and MERA for D=1 systems is seen to be determined by the structure of geodesics in the physical and holographic geometries, respectively; whereas the asymptotic scaling of entanglement entropy is seen to always obey a simple boundary law -- that is, again in the relevant geometry. This geometrical interpretation offers a simple and unifying framework to understand the structural properties of, and helps clarify the relation between, different tensor network states. We simulate the $t$ $J$ model in two dimensions by means of infinite projected entangled-pair states (iPEPS) generalized to arbitrary unit cells, finding results similar to those previously obtained by the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) for wide ladders. In particular, we show that states exhibiting stripes, {\it i.e}. a unidirectional modulation of hole-density and antiferromagnetic order with a $\pi$-phase shift between adjacent stripes, have a lower variational energy than uniform phases predicted by variational and fixed-node Monte Carlo simulations. For a fixed unit-cell size the energy per hole is minimized for a hole density $\rho_l\sim 0.5$ per unit length of a stripe. We present a matrix product state (MPS) algorithm to approximate ground states of translationally invariant systems with periodic boundary conditions. For a fixed value of the bond dimension D of the MPS, we discuss how to minimize the computational cost to obtain a seemingly optimal MPS approximation to the ground state. In a chain of N sites and correlation length \xi, the computational cost formally scales as g(D,\xi /N)D^3, where g(D,\xi /N) is a nontrivial function. For \xi << N, this scaling reduces to D^3, independent of the system size N, making our algorithm N times faster than previous proposals. We apply the method to obtain MPS approximations for the ground states of the critical quantum Ising and Heisenberg spin-1/2 models as well as for the noncritical Heisenberg spin-1 model. In the critical case, for any chain length N, we find a model-dependent bond dimension D(N) above which the polynomial decay of correlations is faithfully reproduced throughout the entire system., Comment: 17 pages, 15 figures

The multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA) can be used, in its scale invariant version, to describe the ground state of a lattice system at a quantum critical point. From the scale invariant MERA one can determine the local scaling operators of the model. Here we show that, in the presence of a global symmetry $\mathcal{G}$, it is also possible to determine a class of non-local scaling operators. Each operator consist, for a given group element $g\in\mathcal{G}$, of a semi-infinite string $\tGamma_g$ with a local operator $\phi$ attached to its open end. In the case of the quantum Ising model, $\mathcal{G}= \mathbb{Z}_2$, they correspond to the disorder operator $\mu$, the fermionic operators $\psi$ and $\bar{\psi}$, and all their descendants. Together with the local scaling operators identity $\mathbb{I}$, spin $\sigma$ and energy $\epsilon$, the fermionic and disorder scaling operators $\psi$, $\bar{\psi}$ and $\mu$ are the complete list of primary fields of the Ising CFT. The multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA), in its scale invariant version, offers a very compact approximation to quantum critical ground states. Here we show that, by adding a boundary to the scale invariant MERA, an accurate approximation to the critical ground state of an infinite chain with a boundary is obtained, from which one can extract boundary scaling operators and their scaling dimensions. Lattices of N={36,144,inf} sites with periodic boundary conditions are considered. Abstract

This work explores the use of a tree tensor network ansatz to simulate the ground state of a local Hamiltonian on a two-dimensional lattice. By exploiting the entropic area law, the tree tensor network ansatz seems to produce quasi-exact results in systems with sizes well beyond the reach of exact diagonalisation techniques. We describe an algorithm to approximate the ground state of a local Hamiltonian on a L times L lattice with the topology of a torus. Accurate results are obtained for L={4,6,8}, whereas approximate results are obtained for larger lattices. As an application of the approach, we analyse the scaling of the ground state entanglement entropy at the quantum critical point of the model. We confirm the presence of a positive additive constant to the area law for half a torus. We also find a logarithmic additive correction to the entropic area law for a square block. The single copy entanglement for half a torus reveals similar corrections to the area law with a further term proportional to 1/L., Comment: Major rewrite, new version published in Phys. Rev. We present an algorithm to simulate two-dimensional quantum lattice systems in the thermodynamic limit. Our approach builds on the {\em projected entangled-pair state} algorithm for finite lattice systems [F. Verstraete and J.I. Cirac, cond-mat/0407066] and the infinite {\em time-evolving block decimation} algorithm for infinite one-dimensional lattice systems [G. Vidal, Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 070201 (2007)]. The present algorithm allows for the computation of the ground state and the simulation of time evolution in infinite two-dimensional systems that are invariant under translations. We demonstrate its performance by obtaining the ground state of the quantum Ising model and analysing its second order quantum phase transition., Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures, 1 table. We propose a refined matrix product state representation for many-body quantum states that are invariant under SU(2) transformations, and indicate how to extend the time-evolving block decimation (TEBD) algorithm in order to simulate time evolution in an SU(2) invariant system. We introduce the multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA), an efficient representation of certain quantum many-body states on a D-dimensional lattice. Equivalent to a quantum circuit with logarithmic depth and distinctive causal structure, the MERA allows for an exact evaluation of local expectation values. Abstract

We investigate for which resource states an efficient classical simulation of measurement based quantum computation is possible. We show that the Schmidt--rank width, a measure recently introduced to assess universality of resource states, plays a crucial role in also this context. We relate Schmidt--rank width to the optimal description of states in terms of tree tensor networks and show that an efficient classical simulation of measurement based quantum computation is possible for all states with logarithmically bounded Schmidt--rank width (with respect to the system size). For graph states where the Schmidt--rank width scales in this way, we efficiently construct the optimal tree tensor network descriptions, and provide several examples. We highlight parallels in the efficient description of complex systems in quantum information theory and graph theory., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures
