7. Lab4CE: A Remote Laboratory for Computer Education

Abstract

Remote practical activities have been demonstrated to be efficient when learners come to acquire inquiry skills. In computer science education, virtualization technologies are gaining popularity as this technological advance enables instructors to implement realistic practical learning activities, and learners to engage in authentic and problem-based learning. However, virtualization solutions have not been designed especially for education and do not address any pedagogical concern. Since several large-scale studies showed that instructional supports during practical activities are almost as important as technical features, this article investigates the following research question: how the scaffolding around the lab increases students' engagement in remote practical learning of computer science? To answer this question, we introduce the Lab4CE environment, a remote laboratory for computer education which adopts a distributed, modular and flexible architecture to integrate a set of scaffolding tools and services intended for instructors and learners. An exploratory study conducted with 139 undergraduate students enrolled in the first year of a computer science degree suggests a positive effect of the framework on learners' engagement when they come to practice system administration, and reveals a significant positive correlation between students' activity within the system and students' learning achievement.

Abstract

Can the healthcare supply crisis be mitigated by territorial teleconsultation ? Initial lessons for Normandy. Since 2018, and at an increasingly rapid pace, private companies have been deploying medical teleconsultation booths and kiosks throughout the national territory in easily accessible public places, mainly in pharmacies. These devices are developed by private companies from the French Tech movement, with the dual argument of fighting against medical desertification and anticipating the aging of the population, on the assumption that advancing age will in fact lead to greater needs in terms of healthcare provision across the national territory. Against a backdrop of discourse against neglect of the territory, with the agreement and sometimes active participation of local public actors, private teleconsultation kiosks are rapidly being deployed. They fit into the current of "technological solutionism" and present themselves as a remedy for the crisis in the health and social sector, which continues to worsen across the entire national territory. The situation in Normandy reveals that the ongoing deployment of medical teleconsultation booths is dynamic in medically vulnerable areas, but currently does not address the hardest hit zones by the shortage of Norman doctors. The article concludes with an initial report of usage, ultimately showing that these devices are especially appreciated for their ability to respond to medical emergencies and the recurring follow-up of patients who do not live in medical desertification zones. Abstract

Les pertes inouïes de la Grande Guerre ont entraîné la généralisation de pratiques embryonnaires auparavant : individualisation des sépultures, construction de monuments commémoratifs, multiplication des rites. Des chercheurs de nombreux pays étudient les traces de cette rupture majeure, encore largement visible dans les paysages. Tombes, cénotaphes, nécropoles, monuments et mémoriaux en représentent le témoignage matériel et culturel. Anthropologues, historiens, archéologues, spécialistes du tourisme de mémoire, retracent comment a été remémorée ce que l’on croyait être la vision du monde des disparus, du sacrifice au pacifisme. La comparaison internationale et diachronique, de la Seconde Guerre mondiale au génocide du Rwanda, donne toute leur importance à ces sites, au moment où ceux du front occidental belge et français sont candidats à entrer au patrimoine mondial de l’UNESCO. Ces témoins des consciences traversées par le malheur des guerres sont l’espoir de la réconciliation humaniste.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to shed light on the question of municipal representation on the Web, based on observations of the Internet of four French 'communes': Issy-les-Moulineaux, Marley-le-Roi, Metz and Parthenay. This sample is not representative of all French municipality sites, of which the large majority exist only for promotional uses ('come and visit our city, its specialties, its museum, its hotels, its restaurants, its church...'). We have chosen four sites which serve - thanks to the personal investments of the cities' mayors in the projects - as showcases of the best examples of the establishment of information and communication technologies in 'communes' and as a laboratory. This last, because the Ministry of Industry has recognized that the four experiments are useful to the public and so has given them the name 'information highway.' The purpose of this study is not to evaluate the laboratory aspect of the projects and their social and spatial impacts on their local territories but to analyze the showcase aspects of the projects, based on observations of the communes' websites. It attempts to demonstrate how new local development projects automatically acquire high visibility in a medium that is both support and content (medium and message, to use McLuhan's expression) in a world of political communication where speech is an integral part of action. Abstract

The contents of a « digital city » project in Parthenay is studied on a ten-year period. This is probably one of the most emblematic French experiences regarding the introduction of ICT into urban environments. The project is one of the oldest in Europe. This article deals with the question of permanence of a public policy on ICT. It took ten years for the ICT sector to be organized within French spatial collectivities with an important rhythm. Three directions are developed in the article. First, showing the continuity of the Parthenay policy on ICT. Second, attempting to understand why the system has kept working even if there were decisive modulations modifying the initial spirit. Finally, trying to report the consequences of this project to local, national and European public actions in the creation of an information society model. L’itinéraire du projet de ville numérisée à Parthenay est examiné sur une période de dix ans. Il s’agit probablement de la plus emblématique expérience française d’introduction des TIC dans une petite ville marquée par une ruralité environnante et l’une des plus anciennes d’Europe. Au-delà de la simple étude de cas, cet article pose la question de la permanence d’une politique publique dans le secteur des TIC qui, en dix ans s’est structuré au sein des collectivités territoriales françaises à un rythme très soutenu. Trois dimensions sont envisagées. D’abord, montrer la continuité de la politique parthenaisienne en matière de TIC. Ensuite, comprendre les raisons pour lesquelles la démarche s’est effectivement poursuivie, même si cette reprise s’est faite au prix d’inflexions décisives modifiant grandement l’esprit de départ. Enfin, tenter un bilan sur ce que ce projet, dans sa première mais aussi dans sa deuxième génération a apporté à l’action publique locale, nationale et européenne en matière d’édification d’un modèle de société de l’information.

Abstract

The Aracuai (eastern Brazil) and West Congo (southwestern Africa) belts are counterparts of the same Neoproterozoic orogen located between the Sao Francisco and Congo cratons. The Macaubas Group represents a major passive margin sequence and is a key unit for interpreting the evolution of that orogen. The Salinas Formation is the distal rock assemblage of the Macaubas Group and consists of a deep-sea sand-mud sequence, and a volcanic-sedimentary unit called the Ribeirao da Folha facies. The latter includes metamorphosed volcanic-exhalative sediments associated with ocean-floor basalts (amphibolites). The magmatic protoliths of these amphibolites crystallized at about 816 [+ or -] 72 Ma (Sm-Nd whole-rock isochron, [[Epsilon].sub.Nd(t)] = +3.8 [+ or -] 0.2). Regional metamorphism reached the amphibolite facies at about 630 Ma (Rb-Sr whole-rock isochron), when slabs of ultramafic rocks were tectonically emplaced over the Ribeirao da Folha facies. We consider this volcanic-sedimentary facies and the coeval slabs of ultramafic rocks to be remnants of a branch of the Adamastor-Brazilide ocean. The extensive occurrence of syntectonic to late tectonic calc-alkalic granitoids along the internal domain of the Aracuai belt implies that a reasonably large amount of ocean crust was consumed, via an east-dipping subduction zone, during formation of the Aracuai-West Congo orogen.

International audience; Ce numéro de NETCOM intitulé « Expéditions géographiques en Terres Numériques, fronts pionniers et nouvelles limites » ambitionne de retracer - avec modestie devant l’ampleur de la tâche - une histoire de la géographie du numérique commencée aux tout débuts des années 1970 et dont la forte prise en compte scientifique est désormais à la mesure des enjeux qui se dessinent dans le fonctionnement des territoires et des sociétés. Des « terres numériques » ont été découvertes, prenant d’ailleurs davantage l’allure d’archipels épars que de vastes continents, des expéditions géographiques individuelles et collectives ont été organisées, mettant au jour des phénomènes territoriaux inédits. Ainsi, des environnements numériques territorialisés ou dématérialisés ont été décrits, cartographiés, modélisés, arpentés par géographes, géomaticiens et aménageurs ; leurs usages ont été scrutés, leurs logiques de déploiement examinées, leurs ressorts narratifs interrogés, posant ainsi les bases des expéditions futures.
