Este artigo tem como intuito analisar as estratégias de preservação e ataque às faces em uma interação conflituosa realizada entre o presidente Jair Messias Bolsonaro e sua equipe, na live divulgada em seu canal do Youtube no dia 18 de agosto de 2022. Por intermédio do aporte teórico de Goffman (1967, 1980, 2011, 2014) e Recuero (2010,2012), pretendemos apresentar uma breve reflexão teórica a respeito dos rituais interacionais – que envolvem os processos de construção, preservação e desconstrução de face –, além das novas propriedades da conversação em rede, que contribuem para mudanças na forma de interagir virtualmente. O instrumental teórico selecionado oferece, assim, as bases necessárias para fundamentar os procedimentos analíticos, permitindo desenvolver pontos de vista sobre o corpus selecionado. This article aims to analyze the strategies of preservation and attack on faces in a conflicting interaction between Brazilian President Jair Messias Bolsonaro and his team in the live broadcast on his YouTube channel on August 18th, 2022. Through the theoretical contribution of Goffman (1967, 1980, 2011, 2014) and Recuero (2010, 2012), this paper intends to present a brief theoretical reflection on interactional rituals, which involve the processes of construction, preservation, and deconstruction of the face, in addition to the new properties of network conversation, which contribute to changes in the way of interacting virtually. The theoretical instruments selected thus offer the necessary bases to support the analytical procedures, allowing the development of points of view on the selected corpus. &nbsp

Graves orbitopathy is both disabling and disfiguring. Medical therapies to reduce inflammation are widely used, but there is limited trial data beyond 18 months of follow-up. Methods Three-year follow-up of a subset of the CIRTED trial (N = 68), which randomized patients to receive high-dose oral steroid with azathioprine/placebo and radiotherapy/sham radiotherapy. Results Data were available at 3 years from 68 of 126 randomized subjects (54%). No additional benefit was seen at 3 years for patients randomized to azathioprine or radiotherapy with regard to a binary clinical composite outcome measure (BCCOM), modified European Group on Graves’ Orbitopathy score, or Ophthalmopathy Index. Clinical Activity Score (CAS), Ophthalmopathy Index, and Total Eye Score improved over 3 years (P < .001). However, quality of life at 3 years remained poor. Of 64 individuals with available surgical outcome data, 24 of 64 (37.5%) required surgical intervention. Disease duration of greater than 6 months before treatment was associated with increased need for surgery [odds ratio (OR) 16.8; 95% CI 2.95, 95.0; P = .001]. Higher baseline levels of CAS, Ophthalmopathy Index, and Total Eye Score but not early improvement in CAS were associated with increased requirement for surgery. Conclusion In this long-term follow-up from a clinical trial, 3-year outcomes remained suboptimal with ongoing poor quality of life and high numbers requiring surgery. Importantly, reduction in CAS in the first year, a commonly used surrogate outcome measure, was not associated with improved long-term outcomes.

Ovarian cancer (OC) can significantly impact sexual functioning beyond initial treatment and into survivorship. However, research suggests that the information and advice women want on this topic may not be readily provided by health professionals (HPs). We explored the psychological and sexual wellbeing of a sample of Australian women diagnosed with OC, to inform the development of effective, targeted sexuality resources. This paper presents a subset of our findings. Participants were recruited nationwide via social media, print advertisement and the database of a support organisation, Ovarian Cancer Australia. Self-reported demographic and clinical survey data were collected including perceptions of the availability and adequacy of sexuality support post-OC. Participants (n = 98) were on average 52.8 years old and 5.5 years post-diagnosis. A minority (22%) reported that the impact of OC on their sexuality was discussed by HPs; and 46% were satisfied with that discussion. Approximately half (52%) had wanted to discuss sexuality concerns with a HP during treatment and 43% still felt the need for this discussion. Open-ended responses revealed the need for more information that was detailed and specified what to expect post-diagnosis. Shortcomings of HPs in addressing sexuality were also revealed. This research provides further evidence that sexual health remains inadequately addressed in OC care across the trajectory for the majority of women, and is an area of unmet need.

Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the effect of tourniquet time less than or in excess of 120 minutes on foot surgery wound healing. Null hypothesis: A tourniquet time of over 120 minutes will not affect wound healing in foot surgery. Design, Setting, Participants and Method: A retrospective comparative cohort analysis was performed on 96 patients undergoing complex hindfoot surgery in a large central teaching hospital. Fifty-five patients receiving tourniquet pressure for >120 minutes and 41 receiving 120-minute cohort. There were no other significant differences in secondary clinical outcomes and no significant variations in patient demographics. Conclusion: This study suggests that tourniquet times from 2 to 3 hours in foot and ankle surgery with pressures up to 300 mmHg are not associated with a significant effect on wound healing.

Use of telephone, video and e-consultations is increasing. These can make consultations more transactional. This study aimed to develop a complex intervention to address patients' concerns more comprehensively in general practice and test the feasibility of this in a cluster-randomised framework.The complex intervention used two technologies: a patient-completed pre-consultation form used at consultation opening and a doctor-provided summary report provided at consultation closure. This paper reports on the development and realist evaluation of the summary report.A person-based approach was used to develop the summary report. An electronic protocol was designed to automatically generate the report after GPs complete a clinical template in the patient record. This was tested with 45 patients in 3 rounds each, with iterative adjustments made based on feedback after each round. Subsequently, an intervention incorporating the pre-consultation form with the summary report was then tested in a cluster-randomised framework with 30 patients per practice in six practices: four randomised to intervention, and two to control. An embedded realist evaluation was carried out. The main feasibility study results are reported elsewhere.The person-based approach was successful. The summary report creates clarity, empowerment and reassurance in certain consultations and patients. As it takes a few minutes per patient, GPs prefer to select patients who will benefit most.

Objective: Ovarian cancer (OC) can significantly change the way women feel about their body. However, personal accounts regarding these changes are lacking in the literature. Therefore, the aim of this study was to gain an understanding of the ways in which OC can affect relationships, sexuality, womanhood and body image. Methods: Ninety-eight Australian women aged 18 and over diagnosed with OC completed an online survey that invited narrative responses to open-ended questions about relationships, sexuality, body image and womanhood following OC treatment. Responses were analysed thematically while applying a sociocultural lens. Results: Three themes and two subthemes were identified: Failure and Loss of Femininity and Womanhood, Internalising Public Perception of Body and Illness and Altered Relationships which comprised two subthemes, Loss of the Sexual Self and Relationship Burden. These themes suggest women view themselves and their relationships in comparison with sociocultural understandings of body normalcy. Women often questioned their self-worth, their relationships and place within society due to changes in fertility, sexuality and bodily functioning. Conclusion: These results highlight a need for health care professionals to open dialogue with women about sexuality and ensure information and support is given to reduce stigma and positively influence self-perception and increase body acceptance. Micro-morphological investigations of the foliar epidermal anatomy of seven species of the family Euphorbiaceae: Acalypha hispidia Burm. f., A. wilkesiana Mull. Arg, Euphorbia heterophylla L., E. hirta L., Jatropha curcas L., J. gossypifolia L. and Manihot esculenta Crantz was carried out to assess the systematic relevance of epidermal features, stomata and trichome diversity within the family using light microscope and camera. Members of this family contain many important medicinal herbs and there has been increasing misidentification of species in this family. Leaf micro-morphological characteristics are commonly used in the identification and authentication of plants. Results showed that the stomatal index varied from species to species. Epidermal cell shapes were found to be irregular to polygonal on both surfaces of the species. The epidermal cells possess straight to undulating anticlinal walls but in some few cases exhibited wavy to straight anticlinal walls. The presence of papillae was observed to be a unique character of E. heterophylla among the species studied. The stomatal types observed were Anisocytic, Anomocytic, Diacytic, tetracytic, paracytic, and actinocytic. The stomatal complex was mainly amphistomatic except for A. wilkesiana that was hypostomatic. The hypostomatic character of A. wilkesiana as reported in this paper is the first of such report as previous report found was amphistomatic. Non-glandular, multiseriate uniseriate and in some cases branched trichome types were observed only on both surfaces of A. wilkesiana and E. hirta but absent on all other studied species. This study revealed detailed descriptive micromorphological structures which could serve as a source of information and reference for the taxonomic description, identification and delineation of the species studied.

SUMMARY Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the irradiance and the quality of LED light curing units (LCUs) in primary and secondary clinics in the UK and to assess the effect of damage, contamination, use of protective sleeves, and distance of light tips to target on the irradiance and performance of LCUs. Methods: The irradiance levels (mW/cm2) of 26 LED LCUs from general dental practices and 207 LED LCUs from two dental hospitals were measured using a digital radiometer (Blue Phase II, Ivoclar, Vivadent, Amherst, NY). Ten LED light guide tips (Satelec Mini, Acteon, Merignac, France) were selected to evaluate the effect of chipping, contamination (tip debris), and use of protective sleeves and tips to sensor distance on irradiance (mW/cm2) using a MARC Resin Calibrator (Blue Light Analytics, Halifax, Canada). Homogeneity of the light output was evaluated using a laser beam profiler (SP620; Ophir-Spiricon, North Longan, UT, USA). Statistical analysis was conducted using a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with post hoc Tukey test (α=0.05) and linear regression with stepwise correlation tests. Results: Thirty-three percent of the LCUs delivered irradiance output less than 500 mW/cm2. The condition of the light curing tips was poor, with 16% contaminated with resin debris, 26% damaged, and 10% both contaminated and damaged. The irradiance output was significantly reduced in contaminated (62%) and chipped (50%) light curing tips and when using protective sleeves (24%) (p Conclusion: There remains a lack of awareness of the need for regular monitoring and maintenance of dental LCUs. Damaged and contaminated light curing tips, use of protective sleeves, and increasing the distance from the restoration significantly reduced the irradiance output and the performance of the LCUs.

A field experiment was conducted at Rivers Institute of Agricultural Research and Training (RIART), Rivers State University, Port Harcourt, Nigeria with the objective of evaluating the influence of seedbed types and vine harvesting time on shoot and tuber yields of sweet potato and make recommendations for optimal and sustainable production. The treatments consisted of three seedbed types (ridge, flat, and mound), and four vine harvesting time (8, 12, 16 and 20 weeks after planting). The experiment was laid out as a 3 x 4 in factorial arrangement fitted into a randomized complete block design (RCBD) and replicated three times. The results revealed that planting of sweet potato on ridge produced the highest root tuber yield followed by mound seedbeds; planting on flat seedbed produced the highest shoot (vine) and lowest tuber yields. While planting on ridge seedbed and harvesting the vines 16 weeks after planting (when about 80% of the growth phase of the plant was completed) produced optimum shoot yield which could be used as fodder with no significant effect on root tuber yield. In general, vine harvesting during active growth phase of the sweet potato plant seriously depressed tuber yield more than it affected shoot production. These results therefore stand as our recommendations for sweet potato production in the South-south zone of Nigeria.

Two hundred and forty newly weaned pigs (PIC, Hendersonville, TN) were used to determine if supplementing with additional arginine either in the water or in the feed, and the combinations thereof, improved intestinal integrity and growth performance in the nursery. Three pigs (21 ± 2 d) per pen for a total of 80 pens, within 4 water lines, were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 arginine-dietary treatments across the 20 pens for a 4×3 factorial. With 4 water treatments: 0, 4, 8 and 12% Arg and 3 dietary treatments: basal level, 1.55 and 1.75% SID Arg. Pigs and feeders were weighed at the d0, d7 (water and diet change), d21 (diet change), and d41. Eighty pigs were euthanized at d7, for ileum evaluation of villus height and crypt depth. Remaining pigs were then taken off the arginine-water treatment portion of the experiment, and fed the diets formulated to contain 3 different levels of dietary arginine. Data were analyzed by pen as repeated measures (SAS 9.4). Feeding additional arginine resulted in an improvement (basal: 20.35, 1.55: 22.22, 1.75: 20.93 kg; P = 0.04) in pig body weight compared with basal. No interaction was detected when using arginine in the water and feed simultaneously, on piglet performance. The use of 8% arginine in the water resulted in a reduction in crypt depth (0:132.54, 4:140.70, 8:117.28, 12:131.99; P < 0.01) and 4% Arg reduced total villous height:crypt depth ratio (0:2.50, 4:2.09, 8:2.56, 12:2.43; P < 0.02). The feeding of arginine resulted in an improvement in final body weight of the pigs; however, there were no differences in intestinal villi when Arg is added to the feed. However, the use of Arg in the water resulted in an improvement in intestinal villi, but no phenotypical change in piglet growth in the nursery.

O texto estrutura-se como um relato de experiência acerca das implicações da pesquisa autoetnográfica, associada ao conceito de exotopia proposto por Bakhtin (2010) em dissertação de mestrado profissional em Letras (PROFLETRAS). A pesquisa envolveu a atividade de revisão e reescrita em sala de aula, com alunos do 7º ano do Ensino Fundamental II, com o intuito de trabalhar a produção de textos como experiência subjetiva e dialógica com a língua(gem). A autoetnografia e a exotopia, interligadas pelo conceito dialógico na perspectiva bakhtiniana, tornaram-se métodos e procedimentos fundamentais para o desenvolvimento das atividades didáticas em que os papeis de professora e pesquisadora fundiam-se na busca da resolução de problemas junto aos alunos participantes dessa experiência.

This chapter is written by a second-grade teacher who gives a personal account for remote teaching during quarantine and the 2020 - 2021 school year. The equity and diversity of various situations involved during the past year are discussed throughout the chapter: from the beginning of quarantine 2020 to the end of the school year in May 2021. Remote teaching, social and emotional factors, and the diversity of families are also addressed. The chapter is dedicated to Jordan Lea Darnell, a teacher who lost her battle to COVID-19 in the Spring of 2021.

Aims: A 4x – 2x polycross mating design of 4 tetraploid female parents was established to determine paternal contributions of 3 diploid male parents to resulting progenies, their ploidy composition and genetic diversity of synthetic hybrids. Study Design: The polycross mating design comprised 2 blocks having both maternal and paternal selections, with seed parents replicated at 12 plants per clone. Each crossing block had 31 plants of each of the three male parents. Place and Duration of Study: International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) High Rainfall Station, Onne (4º51’N, 7º03’E, 10 m above sea level), Rivers State, South-South Nigeria for a period of 24 months. Methodology: At maturity of maternal parents (TMPx 2796-5; TMPx 1658-4; TMPx 5511-2; and TMPx 7152-2), fruit bunches were harvested, ripened and the seeds extracted. Hard seeds obtained were germinated in vivo in seed trays and emerging seedlings transplanted to perforated nursery bags. At 12 weeks, DNA was extracted from candle leaf for RAPD analysis of 80 progenies and the 3 pollen parents. Ploidy status of progenies was determined using flow cytometry method. Results: There was significant unequal paternal contribution to Musa polycross progenies with 3 maternal parents; TMPx 2796-5, TMPx 5511-2, and TMPx 1658-4. Two of the 3 paternal parents had progenies with all 4 maternal parents while TMB2x 5105-1 did not have any progeny with TMPx 2796-5. Progenies exhibited 4 ploidy levels with frequency differing with each female parent: TMPx 7152-2 produced 100% 3x progeny; TMPx 5511-2, 63% 3x and 37% 2x; TMPx 2796-5, 91% 3x and 9% 2x and TMPx 1658-4, 82% 3x, 9% 2x, 6% 4x and 3% 5x. The 5x progeny was recorded in the first ratoon crop. The second ratoon crop had only triploids. Conclusion: The high frequency of 3x progenies from all maternal types in this study, suggests the effectiveness of the polycross mating design in Musa improvement.

Aims: This field experiment was conducted to determine if hand and open pollination methods affected performances of Musa progenies from 4x - 2x crosses and to identify promising progenies for recurrent selection. Study Design: The experimental design was a randomized complete block design with two replications of 6 plants per genotype. Place and Duration of Study: International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) High Rainfall Station, Onne (4º51’N, 7º03’E, 10 m above sea level), in Rivers State, South-south Nigeria for 24 months. Methodology: Two-month old seedlings of hand pollinated (6 diploid, 6 tetraploid) and open pollinated (6 diploid, 6 tetraploid) progenies, along with parental clones (2x) and (4x) of each genotype were planted at 3 m x 2 m spacing. Data on phenology, vegetative growth, yield and yield characters were collected at flowering and harvest over three crop cycles. Genotypes were partitioned into 5 clusters assayed by means of orthogonal contrasts to compare the performance of progenies from both pollination methods. Results: Pollination methods produced no significant (P = .05) differences, unfavourable effects or reduction in performance of economically important yield and yield components of 4x and 2x progenies of similar genotype. Some significant (P = .05) linear correlations and relationships between phenological and vegetative traits; and yield and yield components changed with pollination methods and ploidy levels but did not affect final outcomes. Promising open pollinated diploids include the early maturing TMP2x 2829-62OP; and for high yield and yield components measured, TMB2x 8084-2OP and TMP2x 1448-1OP. Promising open pollinated tetraploids include TMP4x 7002-1OP and TMP4x 2796-5OP. Conclusion: Open pollination did not result in unfavorable effects or reduction in performance of economically important yield and yield components in progenies of similar genotypes. Therefore, open pollination could be considered for Musa breeding. This will reduce cost, labour, time and stress involved in Musa improvement.

Aims: This study was conducted specifically to develop a low cost rapid plantlet multiplication process easily affordable for farmers to enable them speedily generate plantlets for their farms from mini tubers of sweet potato variety, TIS 87/0087. Study Design: The experimental design was a completely randomised design with three replications. Analysis of variance was used (P=.05) to test treatment effects in a completely randomized design and mean comparison was by LSD. Place and Duration of Study: The study was carried out between February and April 2019 in the plant culture laboratory of the Department of Plant Science and Biotechnology, Rivers State University, South-South, Nigeria. Methodology: Mini tubers of sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas, L.) were preconditioned by soaking in a 1:10 ratio of natural substance to water for 12 hours before planting in soil. The natural substances comprised coconut water, grapefruit juice and honey with water as control. Results: Mini tubers primed with grapefruit juice and coconut water sprouted significantly earlier (P=0.05) (7 days and 10 days respectively) than the control (water) which sprouted after 19 days. However, there was no significant difference in time to sprouting between mini tubers primed with honey (16 days) and the control (19 days). Mini tubers primed with grapefruit juice, coconut water and the control did not differ significantly (P=.05) in the number of initial plantlet sprouts but mini tubers primed with honey had significantly lower initial sprouts than others. On average, coconut water primed mini tubers produced significantly higher (P=.05) total number of regenerated plantlets compared to the other treatments and continued regeneration of plantlets longer than other treatments. Coconut water regenerated almost 3times the number of plantlets regenerated by mini tubers soaked in water. Mini tubers primed with honey stopped sprouting after 29 days which was significantly earlier (P=.05) than those primed with grapefruit juice (38 days), water (46 days) and coconut water (51 days). Conclusion: This study found that mini tubers of sweet potato after a preconditioning treatment by soaking in dilute coconut water (1:10 coconut water : water ratio) for 12 hrs before planting regenerated almost 3times the number of plantlets regenerated by mini tubers soaked in water for the same period.

Providing opportunities for community engagement and research is part of many environmental sciences and studies programs. Because of the constraints of the typical classroom environment, we need to develop innovative pedagogical tools to allow students to do this kind of work thoughtfully. A partnership between Duke University, a major private research university in Durham, NC, and Paul Quinn College, a small HBCU in Dallas, TX, allowed students to collaborate on community-based participatory research projects and a cross-campus semester-long immersive learning experience. This partnership was grounded in our experience in environmental leadership, social entrepreneurship, and ecological restoration and was led primarily by Duke faculty. We share valuable lessons about engaging in communities outside of our home institution and for working across campuses. Cross-campus collaboration, while logistically challenging, offers ways to connect students in different learning environments but with the same goals and passion for community engagement and research.

Aims: Effects of 3 storage durations, 3 hydro priming protocols and 6 chemical priming protocols on emergence in soil (in vivo) and embryo culture (in vitro) of Musa acuminata Calcutta 4 were investigated. Study Design: The experimental design was a completely randomised with three replicates. Analysis of variance was used (P=.05) to test treatment effects in a Completely Randomised design. Mean comparison was by LSD. Place and Duration of Study: This study was carried out for a period of 10 months at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture High Rainfall Station, Onne, in Rivers State, Nigeria. Methodology: Seed pre-sowing treatments consisted of 3 storage protocols, 3 hydro priming and 6 chemical treatment protocols. After which treated seeds were divided into two sets. One set was sown directly in soil and the other set subjected to embryo culture technique. Results: Seeds sown in soil immediately they were extracted had significantly higher emergence than stored seeds. Emergence declined by 20% and 23% after 2 weeks and 4 weeks of storage respectively. For embryo culture, seeds stored for 2 weeks had significantly higher germination (40%) than seeds that were not stored or seeds stored for 4 weeks (38%). Emergence in vivo was significantly higher for seeds that were not hydro primed than for seeds hydro primed for 4 days or 8 days. Emergence declined by 33% and 38% in seeds hydro primed for 4 days and 8 days respectively. Hydro priming for embryo culture for 4 days increased germination significantly by 60% compared to those without hydro priming. All the chemicals reduced emergence in both soil and in vitro procedures except that of Copper oxychloride in embryo culture which increased germination by 18%, compared to the control achieving 47% germination. Conclusion: Higher germination was recorded with in vitro than in vivo procedures irrespective of the treatments applied. Perhaps inherent factors in the seed coat and possible interactions in soil may account for the poor emergence exhibited in vivo and will require further investigation.

Fundamentado numa concepção etnográfico-discursiva (CORRÊA, 2011; 2013), em estudos de letramentos (STREET, 2004; 2010; 2014; GEE,1994) e do discurso (BAKHTIN, 1993, 2003), o trabalho se inscreve no âmbito da Linguística Aplicada. Apresenta como objetivo geral a reflexão sobre os modos de apropriação do gênero acadêmico “projeto de monografia”, no contexto de uma faculdade de formação de professores, considerando a perspectiva discursiva bakhtiniana, especialmente, a tensão entre as palavras de autoridade e a internamente persuasiva, discutindo a concepção de normativadade da língua. A escrita acadêmica é concebida como prática social e experiência subjetiva com a língua(gem) e está sujeita a fatores diversos que integram e modelam o(s) chamado(s) letramento(s) acadêmico(s). Através da análise de pequenos excertos de texto do gênero em pauta, procurou-se construir entendimentos acerca da complexidade da escrita acadêmica em um evento específico, colocando em cena os participantes: aluno, professor-pesquisador, pesquisador-professor. A análise procurou mostrar como os alunos elaboram sua escrita capturando as normas do contexto e dos gêneros acadêmicos.

Plant pathogens are constantly emerging and spreading into new areas and there are often limited postdiagnosis treatment options for infection, making surveillance key to their control. Here we present results from a study testing the efficacy of a portable nanopore-based massively parallel sequencing (MPS) technology for use in the detection of diverse plant pathogens in selected samples. The Oxford MinION device was coupled with whole transcriptome amplification (WTA) to sequence the metatranscriptome of plant and insect tissues infected with either Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus or plum pox virus. Results showed that this methodology is useful for detecting unsuspected viral and bacterial pathogens in plant and insect tissues. The percentage of generated reads assigned to plum pox virus was 95% from infected tissue and 3% from the viruliferous insect, Myzus persicae. Diaphorina citri sequencing led to 22% of the reads mapping as Ca. L. asiaticus. Plum pox virus and Ca. L. asiaticus were detected in both tissue and insect samples near the beginning of each sequencing run, demonstrating the capability of this methodology to obtain results rapidly. This approach also proved the capability of this system to determine the major components of the insect vector’s microbiome and the specific strain of small-genome, high-titer pathogens.

The work assessed the use of shear viscosity at 0.1 s−1 ( η [ 0.1 s − 1 ] ) as a parameter to detect changes in the conditioning and dewatering of digestates. Total and soluble fractions of organic matter of digestate samples before and after storage were also assessed in regards to their conditioning and dewatering performance. Digestate from a conventional mesophilic anaerobic digestion (CMAD) and advanced anaerobic digestion (AAD) plants were used. Linear regression and correlation analysis of 29 different parameters showed that soluble and total fractions of organic matter (Norg, Sc, Sp, Tp, TKN/COD, tCOD and sCOD) during plant operation and storage conditions correlated (r between 0.80 and 0.99) with the variation in polymer dose, floc strength and CST of conditioned digestate samples. The variations occurred within the content of soluble and total fractions of organic matter, and showed to correlate with both conditioning requirements and the variation in η [ 0.1 s − 1 ] . The work concluded that η [ 0.1 s − 1 ] measurements of unconditioned digestate samples have the potential to be used as a parameter to monitor conditioning requirements during digestate storage or during process changes. It was found important to analyse soluble and total fractions of organic matter in order to understand the changes in η [ 0.1 s − 1 ] within specific process conditions.

The extracellular polymeric substances and microbial cytoplasmic contents seem to hold inorganic ions and organic products, such as proteins and carbohydrates that are of critical importance for the metabolism of hydrolytic and acidogenic anaerobic microorganisms. The addition of soluble microbially recovered nutrients from thermally treated digestate sludge, for the fermentation of thermally hydrolysed waste activated sludge, resulted in higher volatile fatty acids yields (VFAs). The yield of VFAs obtained from the recovered microbial nutrients was 27% higher than the no micronutrients control, and comparable to the yield obtained using a micronutrients commercial recipe. In addition, the use of a low pH resulting from a high sucrose dose to select spore forming acidogenic bacteria was effective for VFA production, and yielded 20% higher VFAs than without the pH shock and this associated with the addition of recovered microbial nutrients would overcome the need to thermally pre-treat the inoculum.
