1. Feasibility Studies for the Measurement of Open-Charm Mesons at ALICE-3 Using Decay Channels with Neutral Mesons and Photons in the Final State

Abstract: ALICE-3 is being designed as a next-generation heavy-ion experiment to be operated at the high-luminosity Large Hadron Collider. With luminosities higher by a factor of fifty, ALICE-3 will be able to study5 properties of quark–gluon matter with probes and precision which were previously unavailable due to small cross sections, high background levels, and insufficient detector sensitivity. In particular, the properties of hot and dense QCD matter will be studied by measuring production cross sections, flow coefficients, azimuthal angular correlations and nuclear modification factors for open-charm hadrons. In this contribution, we present the results of feasibility studies for the measurement of ground and excited states of open-charm mesons in decay channels D0 → K− + π+ + π0, D*(2007)0 → D0 + γ and D*(2010)± → D0 + π± in pp, p-Pb and Pb-Pb collisions at LHC energies using the ALICE-3 experimental setup. We formulate the main requirements for the selection of particles and their combinations to ensure reliable signal extraction in a wide transverse momentum range and estimate the minimum size of the required data samples. The results obtained are also compared to previous findings for the open-charm measurements in different decay channels.

2. Reconstruction of Photon Conversions in the MPD Experiment

Abstract: Spectra of thermal photons carry important information on the temperature of the hot and dense medium produced in heavy ion collisions. Photons can be measured via their conversion into electron-positron pairs in the detector material. In this contribution, challenges in the photon reconstruction are discussed and feasibility studies on photon conversion measurements in the future multipurpose detector (MPD) experiment at NICA are presented. The obtained results indicate good prospects for thermal photon measurements.

Abstract: The study of hadronic resonance production is an essential part of the physical programs of many heavy-ion experiments. Detailed measurement of the resonance properties is also foreseen in the future Multi-Purpose Detector (MPD) experiment at the NICA collider. In this report, we focus on the experimental challenges for the reconstruction of resonances in heavy-ion experiments and examine the MPD capabilities for the reconstruction of ρ(770)0, K*(892)0,±, φ(1020), Λ(1520), Σ(1385)± and Ξ(1530)0.

Abstract: Hadronic resonances play an important role in the study of the physics of heavy-ion collisions. In these proceedings, we discuss how the resonances can probe the reaction dynamics, the strangeness production and the properties of the hadronic phase in heavy-ion collisions at center-of-mass energies of sNN = 4–11 GeV. The resonance properties predicted by the general-purpose event generators are found to be very sensitive to the properties and space-time evolution of the medium produced in heavy-ion collisions.

6. Hadronic resonances in heavy-ion collisions at NICA energies and their reconstruction in the MPD setup

Abstract: The short-lived hadronic resonances are used to study the properties of the hot and dense medium produced in the relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The resonance masses and widths, yields and mean transverse momenta measured in the hadronic decay channels probe different stages of the nuclear collisions and are most sensitive to strangeness production, collective flow and hadronization mechanisms as well as to lifetime and density of the hadronic phase. In this contribution, we discuss line shape modifications for short-lived resonances and their consequences for the yields and shapes of the production spectra measured in heavy-ion collisions at intermediate collision energies, [Formula: see text][Formula: see text]GeV. Capabilities of the MPD facility at NICA to reconstruct resonances in Bi+Bi collisions at [Formula: see text][Formula: see text]GeV are presented and discussed.

7. Generative Surrogates for Fast Simulation: TPC Case

Abstract: Simulation of High Energy Physics experiments is widely used, necessary for both detector and physics studies. Detailed Monte-Carlo simulation algorithms are often limited due to the computational complexity of such methods, and therefore faster approaches are desired. Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) are well suited for aggregating a number of detailed simulation steps into a surrogate probability density estimator readily available for fast sampling. In this work, we demonstrate the power of the GAN-based fast simulation model on the use case of simulating the response for the Time Projection Chamber (TPC) in the MPD experiment at the NICA accelerator complex. We show that our model can generate high-fidelity TPC responses, while accelerating the TPC simulation by at least an order of magnitude. We describe alternative representation approaches for this problem and also outline the roadmap for the deployment of our method into the software stack of the experiment., Submitted to NIMA

Abstract: This paper presents isolated photon-hadron correlations using pp and p-Pb data collected by the ALICE detector at the LHC. For photons with |η| < 0.67 and 12 < pT < 40 GeV/c, the associated yield of charged particles in the range |η| < 0.80 and 0.5 < pT < 10 GeV/c is presented. These momenta are much lower than previous measurements at the LHC. No significant difference between pp and p-Pb is observed, with PYTHIA 8.2 describing both data sets within uncertainties. This measurement constrains nuclear effects on the parton fragmentation in p-Pb collisions, and provides a benchmark for future studies of Pb-Pb collisions.

Abstract: The transverse momentum (pT) differential yields of (anti-)3He and (anti-)3H measured in p-Pb collisions at √sNN = 5.02 TeV with ALICE at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) are presented. The ratios of the pTintegrated yields of (anti-)3He and (anti-)3H to the proton yields are reported, as well as the pT dependence of the coalescence parameters B3 for (anti-)3 He and (anti-)3H. For (anti-)3He, the results obtained in four classes of the mean charged-particle multiplicity density are also discussed. These results are compared to predictions from a canonical statistical hadronization model and coalescence approaches. An upper limit on the total yield of 4He is determined.

Abstract: The production of the $$\Lambda $$Λ(1520) baryonic resonance has been measured at midrapidity in inelastic pp collisions at $$\sqrt{s} = 7\ \hbox {TeV}$$s=7TeV and in p–Pb collisions at $$\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} = 5.02\ \hbox {TeV}$$sNN=5.02TeV for non-single diffractive events and in multiplicity classes. The resonance is reconstructed through its hadronic decay channel $$\Lambda $$Λ(1520) $$\rightarrow \hbox {pK}^{-}$$→pK- and the charge conjugate with the ALICE detector. The integrated yields and mean transverse momenta are calculated from the measured transverse momentum distributions in pp and p–Pb collisions. The mean transverse momenta follow mass ordering as previously observed for other hyperons in the same collision systems. A Blast-Wave function constrained by other light hadrons ($$\pi $$π, K, $$\hbox {K}_{\mathrm{S}}^0$$KS0, p, $$\Lambda $$Λ) describes the shape of the $$\Lambda $$Λ(1520) transverse momentum distribution up to $$3.5\ \hbox {GeV}/c$$3.5GeV/c in p–Pb collisions. In the framework of this model, this observation suggests that the $$\Lambda $$Λ(1520) resonance participates in the same collective radial flow as other light hadrons. The ratio of the yield of $$\Lambda (1520)$$Λ(1520) to the yield of the ground state particle $$\Lambda $$Λ remains constant as a function of charged-particle multiplicity, suggesting that there is no net effect of the hadronic phase in p–Pb collisions on the $$\Lambda $$Λ(1520) yield.

Abstract: The production cross section and the transverse momentum distribution of charged particles is measured in pp collisions at √s = 2.76 TeV, 5.02 TeV, 7 TeV and 13 TeV, as well as for Pb-Pb collision at √s_NN = 5.02 TeV and Xe-Xe at √s_NN = 5.44 TeV in ALICE at the LHC. The measurement is performed in the transverse momentum region of 0.15 results show a faster-than-linear increase with the center-of-mass energy and follow a similar trend with respect to previous measurements. The analysis of the p_T spectra in multiplicity intervals show a weak center-of-mass energy dependence when they are compared to their respective inelastic (INEL) pp measurement. The average multiplicity as a function of the collision energy shows a quadratic trend, and the comparison with other ALICE multiplicity measurements exhibits a remarkable agreement, within uncertainties.The transverse momentum spectra in pp collisions are compared to state-of-the-art MC simulations, EPOS LHC and PYTHIA 8 event generators; none of them is able to reproduce the distributions over the full p_T range. The differential cross section in pp collisions is an essential observable for the study of the Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP) created in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The absence of a medium formation in pp collisions serves as an essential baseline for studies of particle production and suppression due to parton energy-loss in the QGP. Since pp collisions at √s = 5.44 TeV were not measured by ALICE, the pp reference at this energy was constructed by using a power law interpolation between the s = 5.02 TeV and 7 TeV data. The pp results are compared to the particle production in Pb-Pb collisions at √s_NN = 5.02 TeV and Xe-Xe collisions at √s_NN = 5.44 TeV. The nuclear modification factor R_AA for Pb-Pb and Xe-Xe collisions was calculated and a strong suppression of high-p_T particles is observed in central collisions. The R AA in different systems allows for a differential study of the parton energy loss in the QGP. The comparison of the R AA in multiplicity intervals between the two systems provide insights into the path length dependence of a parton that propagates in the medium.

16. Production and reconstruction of short-lived resonances in heavy-ion collisions at NICA energies using the MPD detector

Abstract: The short-lived resonances have been used to study properties of the heavy-ion collisions at SPS, RHIC and the LHC. The resonance yields measured in the hadronic decay channels are affected by the rescattering and regeneration effects in the late hadronic phase. The mesonic and baryonic resonances with different strangeness content are used to study the strangeness enhancement phenomenon predicted as one of the signatures for the QCD phase transition. Having different masses and baryonic numbers, the resonances contribute to the study of hadronization mechanisms at low and intermediate transverse momenta. The extensive resonance measurements are not experimentally available in heavy-ion collisions at NICA energies. In this contribution, we study the resonance properties and their sensitivity to different stages of Au+Au collisions at s N N = 4–11 GeV. Results of feasibility studies for reconstruction of ρ(770)0, K*(892), ϕ(1020), Λ(1520), Σ(1385)± and Ξ(1530)0 resonances in the MPD detector at NICA are presented and discussed.

Abstract: The correlations of identical charged kaons were measured in p-Pb collisions at √sNN=5.02 TeV by the ALICE experiment at the LHC. The femtoscopic invariant radii and correlation strengths were extracted from one-dimensional kaon correlation functions and were compared with those obtained in pp and Pb-Pb collisions at √s=7 TeV and √sNN=2.76 TeV, respectively. The presented results also complement the identical-pion femtoscopic data published by the ALICE collaboration. The extracted radii increase with increasing charged-particle multiplicity and decrease with increasing pair transverse momentum. At comparable multiplicities, the radii measured in p-Pb collisions are found to be close to those observed in pp collisions. The obtained femtoscopic parameters are reproduced by the EPOS 3 hadronic interaction model and disfavor models with large initial size or strong collective expansion at low multiplicities.

Abstract: First results on K/π , p/π and K/p fluctuations are obtained with the ALICE detector at the CERN LHC as a function of centrality in Pb--Pb collisions at √sNN=2.76 TeV . The observable νdyn , which is defined in terms of the moments of particle multiplicity distributions, is used to quantify the magnitude of dynamical fluctuations of relative particle yields and also provides insight into the correlation between particle pairs. This study is based on a novel experimental technique, called the Identity Method, which allows one to measure the moments of multiplicity distributions in case of incomplete particle identification. The results for p/π show a change of sign in νdyn from positive to negative towards more peripheral collisions. For central collisions, the results follow the smooth trend of the data at lower energies and νdyn exhibits a change in sign for p/π and K/p.

Abstract: We report on the first femtoscopic measurement of baryon pairs, such as p-p, p-Λ, and Λ-Λ, measured by ALICE at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in proton-proton collisions at s=7TeV. This study demonstrates the feasibility of such measurements in pp collisions at ultrarelativistic energies. The femtoscopy method is employed to constrain the hyperon-nucleon and hyperon-hyperon interactions, which are still rather poorly understood. A new method to evaluate the influence of residual correlations induced by the decays of resonances and experimental impurities is hereby presented. The p-p, p-Λ, and Λ-Λ correlation functions were fitted simultaneously with the help of a new tool developed specifically for the femtoscopy analysis in small colliding systems: Correlation Analysis Tool using the Schrodinger equation (CATS). Within the assumption that in pp collisions the three particle pairs originate from a common source, its radius is found to be equal to r0=1.125±0.018(stat)−0.035+0.058(syst) fm. The sensitivity of the measured p-Λ correlation is tested against different scattering parameters, which are defined by the interaction among the two particles, but the statistics is not sufficient yet to discriminate among different models. The measurement of the Λ-Λ correlation function constrains the phase space spanned by the effective range and scattering length of the strong interaction. Discrepancies between the measured scattering parameters and the resulting correlation functions at LHC and RHIC energies are discussed in the context of various models.

Abstract: The production yield of the Λ(1520) baryon resonance is measured at midrapidity in Pb-Pb collisions at sNN = 2.76 TeV with the ALICE detector at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The measurement is performed in the Λ(1520)→pK− (and charge conjugate) hadronic decay channel as a function of the transverse momentum (pT) and collision centrality. The ratio of the pT-integrated production of Λ(1520) baryons relative to Λ baryons in central collisions is suppressed by about a factor of 2 with respect to peripheral collisions. This is the first observation of the suppression of a baryonic resonance at the LHC and the first 3σ evidence of Λ(1520) suppression within a single collision system. The measured Λ(1520)/Λ ratio in central collisions is smaller than the value predicted by the statistical hadronization model calculations. The shape of the measured pT distribution and the centrality dependence of the suppression are reproduced by the EPOS3 Monte Carlo event generator. The measurement adds further support to the formation of a dense hadronic phase in the final stages of the evolution of the fireball created in heavy-ion collisions, lasting long enough to cause a significant reduction in the observable yield of short-lived resonances.

Abstract: Neutral pion and $\eta $ meson invariant differential yields were measured in non-single diffractive p–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV with the ALICE experiment at the CERN LHC. The analysis combines results from three complementary photon measurements, utilizing the PHOS and EMCal calorimeters and the Photon Conversion Method. The invariant differential yields of $\pi ^{0}$ and $\eta $ meson inclusive production are measured near mid-rapidity in a broad transverse momentum range of $0.3 4 $\hbox {GeV}/c$ at $0.483 \pm 0.015_{\mathrm{stat}} \pm 0.015_{\mathrm{sys}}$ . A deviation from $m_{\mathrm{T}}$ scaling is observed for $p_{\mathrm{T}}

Abstract: We report on the measurement of the inclusive J/ $\psi $ polarization parameters in pp collisions at a center of mass energy $\sqrt{s} = 8$ TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.23 pb$^{-1}$ . J/ $\psi $ resonances are reconstructed in their di-muon decay channel in the rapidity interval $2.5< y < 4.0$ and over the transverse-momentum interval $2< p_\mathrm{T} < 15$ $\mathrm {GeV}/c$ . The three polarization parameters ( $\lambda _\theta $ , $\lambda _\varphi $ , $\lambda _{\theta \varphi }$ ) are measured as a function of $p_\mathrm{T}$ both in the helicity and Collins-Soper reference frames. The measured J/ $\psi $ polarization parameters are found to be compatible with zero within uncertainties, contrary to expectations from all available predictions. The results are compared with the measurement in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV.

Abstract: A measurement of beauty hadron production at mid-rapidity in proton-lead collisions at a nucleon–nucleon centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s_\text {NN}}=5.02$ TeV is presented. The semi-inclusive decay channel of beauty hadrons into $\hbox {J}/\psi $ is considered, where the $\hbox {J}/\psi $ mesons are reconstructed in the dielectron decay channel at mid-rapidity down to transverse momenta of 1.3 GeV/c. The $\hbox {b}\bar{\hbox {b}}$ production cross section at mid-rapidity, $\hbox {d}\sigma _{\hbox {b}\bar{\hbox {b}}}/\hbox {d}y$ , and the total cross section extrapolated over full phase space, $\sigma _{\text {b}\bar{\text {b}}}$ , are obtained. This measurement is combined with results on inclusive $\hbox {J}/\psi $ production to determine the prompt $\hbox {J}/\psi $ cross sections. The results in p–Pb collisions are then scaled to expectations from pp collisions at the same centre-of-mass energy to derive the nuclear modification factor $R_{\text {pPb}}$ , and compared to models to study possible nuclear modifications of the production induced by cold nuclear matter effects. $R_{\text {pPb}}$ is found to be smaller than unity at low $p_{\mathrm{T}}$ for both $\hbox {J}/\psi $ coming from beauty hadron decays and prompt $\hbox {J}/\psi $ .

Abstract: The p T-differential production cross section of prompt Λ c + charmed baryons was measured with the ALICE detector at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in pp collisions at $$ \sqrt{s}=7 $$ s = 7 TeV and in p-Pb collisions at $$ \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}=5.02 $$ s N N = 5.02 TeV at midrapidity. The Λ c + and $$ {\overline{\varLambda}}_{\overline{\mathrm{c}}} $$ Λ ¯ c ¯ were reconstructed in the hadronic decay modes Λ c + → pK− π +, Λ c + → pK S 0 and in the semileptonic channel Λ c + → e+ ν e Λ (and charge conjugates). The measured values of the Λ c + /D0 ratio, which is sensitive to the c-quark hadronisation mechanism, and in particular to the production of baryons, are presented and are larger than those measured previously in different colliding systems, centre-of-mass energies, rapidity and p T intervals, where the Λ c + production process may differ. The results are compared with the expectations obtained from perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics calculations and Monte Carlo event generators. Neither perturbative QCD calculations nor Monte Carlo models reproduce the data, indicating that the fragmentation of heavy-flavour baryons is not well understood. The first measurement at the LHC of the Λ c + nuclear modification factor, R pPb, is also presented. The R pPb is found to be consistent with unity and with that of D mesons within the uncertainties, and consistent with a theoretical calculation that includes cold nuclear matter effects and a calculation that includes charm quark interactions with a deconfined medium.

Abstract: The correlations between event-by-event fluctuations of anisotropic flow harmonic amplitudes have been measured in Pb-Pb collisions at sNN=2.76 TeV with the ALICE detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The results are reported in terms of multiparticle correlation observables dubbed symmetric cumulants. These observables are robust against biases originating from nonflow effects. The centrality dependence of correlations between the higher order harmonics (the quadrangular v4 and pentagonal v5 flow) and the lower order harmonics (the elliptic v2 and triangular v3 flow) is presented. The transverse momentum dependences of correlations between v3 and v2 and between v4 and v2 are also reported. The results are compared to calculations from viscous hydrodynamics and a multiphase transport (AMPT) model calculations. The comparisons to viscous hydrodynamic models demonstrate that the different order harmonic correlations respond differently to the initial conditions and the temperature dependence of the ratio of shear viscosity to entropy density (η/s). A small average value of η/s is favored independent of the specific choice of initial conditions in the models. The calculations with the AMPT initial conditions yield results closest to the measurements. Correlations among the magnitudes of v2, v3, and v4 show moderate pT dependence in midcentral collisions. This might be an indication of possible viscous corrections to the equilibrium distribution at hadronic freeze-out, which might help to understand the possible contribution of bulk viscosity in the hadronic phase of the system. Together with existing measurements of individual flow harmonics, the presented results provide further constraints on the initial conditions and the transport properties of the system produced in heavy-ion collisions.

Abstract: We present measurements of the elliptic flow (v2) as a function of transverse momentum (pT), pseudorapidity (η), and centrality in d+Au collisions at sNN=200, 62.4, 39, and 19.6 GeV. The beam-energy scan of d+Au collisions provides a testing ground for the onset of flow signatures in small collision systems. We measure a nonzero v2 signal at all four collision energies, which, at midrapidity and low pT, is consistent with predictions from viscous hydrodynamic models. Comparisons with calculations from parton transport models (based on the ampt Monte Carlo generator) show good agreement with the data at midrapidity to forward (d-going) rapidities and low pT. At backward (Au-going) rapidities and pT>1.5GeV/c, the data diverges from ampt calculations of v2 relative to the initial geometry, indicating the possible dominance of nongeometry related correlations, referred to as nonflow. We also present measurements of the charged-particle multiplicity (dNch/dη) as a function of η in central d+Au collisions at the same energies. We find that in d+Au collisions at sNN=200 GeV the v2 scales with dNch/dη over all η in the PHENIX acceptance. At sNN=62.4, and 39 GeV, v2 scales with dNch/dη at midrapidity and forward rapidity, but falls off at backward rapidity. This departure from the dNch/dη scaling may be a further indication of nonflow effects dominating at backward rapidity.

Abstract: The production cross sections of the prompt charmed mesons D$^0$, D$^+$, D$^{*+}$ and D$_s$ were measured at mid-rapidity in p-Pb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=5.02$ TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. D mesons were reconstructed from their decays D$^0\rightarrow{\rm K}^-\pi^+$, D$^+\rightarrow{\rm K}^-\pi^+\pi^+$, D$^{*+}\rightarrow D^0\pi^+$, D$_s^+\rightarrow\phi\pi^+\rightarrow{\rm K}^-{\rm K}^+\pi^+$, and their charge conjugates. Abstract: We report the transverse energy ($E_{\mathrm T}$) measured with ALICE at midrapidity in Pb-Pb collisions at ${\sqrt{s_{\mathrm {NN}}}}$ = 2.76 TeV as a function of centrality. The transverse energy was measured using identified single particle tracks. The measurement was cross checked using the electromagnetic calorimeters and the transverse momentum distributions of identified particles previously reported by ALICE. The results are compared to theoretical models as well as to results from other experiments. The mean $E_{\mathrm T}$ per unit pseudorapidity ($\eta$), $\langle $d$E_{\mathrm T}/$d$\eta \rangle$, in 0-5% central collisions is 1737 $\pm$ 6(stat.) $\pm$ 97(sys.) GeV. We find a similar centrality dependence of the shape of $\langle $d$E_{\mathrm T}/$d$\eta \rangle$ as a function of the number of participating nucleons to that seen at lower energies. The growth in $\langle $d$E_{\mathrm T}/$d$\eta \rangle$ at the LHC ${\sqrt{s_{\mathrm {NN}}}}$ exceeds extrapolations of low energy data. We observe a nearly linear scaling of $\langle $d$E_{\mathrm T}/$d$\eta \rangle$ with the number of quark participants. With the canonical assumption of a 1 fm/$c$ formation time, we estimate that the energy density in 0-5% central Pb-Pb collisions at ${\sqrt{s_{\mathrm {NN}}}}$ = 2.76 TeV is 12.3 $\pm$ 1.0 GeV/fm$^3$\xspace and that the energy density at the most central 80 fm$^2$ of the collision is at least 21.5 $\pm$ 1.7 GeV/fm$^3$. This is roughly 2.3 times that observed in 0-5% central Au-Au collisions at ${\sqrt{s_{\mathrm {NN}}}}$ = 200 GeV.

Abstract: Three- and four-pion Bose-Einstein correlations are presented in pp, p-Pb, and Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC. We compare our measured four-pion correlations to the expectation derived from two- and three-pion measurements. Such a comparison provides a method to search for coherent pion emission. We also present mixed-charge correlations in order to demonstrate the effectiveness of several analysis procedures such as Coulomb corrections. Same-charge four-pion correlations in pp and p-Pb appear consistent with the expectations from three-pion measurements. However, the presence of non- negligible background correlations in both systems prevent a conclusive statement. In Pb-Pb collisions, we observe a significant suppression of three- and four-pion Bose-Einstein correlations compared to expectations from two- pion measurements. There appears to be no centrality dependence of the suppression within the 0-50% centrality interval. The origin of the suppression is not clear. However, by postulating either coherent pion emission or large multibody Coulomb effects, the suppression may be explained.

Abstract: We report on measurements of a charge-dependent flow using a novel three-particle correlator with ALICE in Pb-Pb collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC), and discuss the implications for observation of local parity violation and the chiral magnetic wave (CMW) in heavy-ion collisions. Charge-dependent flow is reported for different collision centralities as a function of the event charge asymmetry. While our results are in qualitative agreement with expectations based on the CMW, the nonzero signal observed in higher harmonics correlations indicates a possible significant background contribution. We also present results on a differential correlator, where the flow of positive and negative charges is reported as a function of the mean charge of the particles and their pseudorapidity separation. We argue that this differential correlator is better suited to distinguish the differences in positive and negative charges expected due to the CMW and the background effects, such as local charge conservation coupled with strong radial and anisotropic flow.

Abstract: We prove the existence of exponentially localised and time-periodic solutions in general nonlinear Hamiltonian lattice systems. Like normal modes, these localised solutions are characterised by collective oscillations at the lattice sites with a uniform time-dependence. The proof of existence uses the comparison principle for differential equations to demonstrate that at each lattice site every half of the fundamental period of oscillations, contributing to localised solutions of the nonlinear lattice, is sandwiched between two oscillatory states of auxiliary linear equations. For soft (hard) on-site potentials the allowed frequencies of the in-phase (out-of-phase) localised periodic solutions lie below (above) the lower (upper) value of the linear spectrum of phonon frequencies. By varying a control parameter the exponential decay of the localised states can be tuned continuously.

Abstract: We report the results of the femtoscopic analysis of pairs of identical pions measured in p-Pb collisions at root(NN)-N-S = 5.02 TeV. Femtoscopic radii are determined as a function of event multiplicity and pair momentum in three spatial dimensions. As in the pp collision system, the analysis is complicated by the presence of sizable background correlation structures in addition to the femtoscopic signal. The radii increase with event multiplicity and decrease with pair transverse momentum. When taken at comparable multiplicity, the radii measured in p-Pb collisions, at high multiplicity and low pair transverse momentum, are 10%-20% higher than those observed in pp collisions but below those observed in A-A collisions. The results are compared to hydrodynamic predictions at large event multiplicity as well as discussed in the context of calculations based on gluon saturation.

Abstract: Correlations induced by quantum statistics are sensitive to the spatiotemporal extent as well as dynamics of particle-emitting sources in heavy-ion collisions. In addition, such correlations can be used to search for the presence of a coherent component of pion production. Two- and three-pion correlations of same and mixed charge are measured at low relative momentum to estimate the coherent fraction of charged pions in Pb-Pb collisions at √sNN=2.76 TeV at the CERN Large Hadron Collider with ALICE. The genuine three-pion quantum statistics correlation is found to be suppressed relative to the two-pion correlation based on the assumption of fully chaotic pion emission. The suppression is observed to decrease with triplet momentum. The observed suppression at low triplet momentum may correspond to a coherent fraction in charged-pion emission of 23%±8%.

Abstract: Measurements of double-helicity asymmetries in inclusive hadron production in polarized p+p collisions are sensitive to helicity-dependent parton distribution functions, in particular to the gluon helicity distribution, {Delta}g. This study focuses on the extraction of hte double-helicity asymmetry in {eta} production (p+p{yields}{eta}+X), the {eta} cross section, and the {eta}/{pi}{sup 0} cross section ratio. The cross section and ratio measurements provide essential input for the extraction of fragmentation functions that are needed to acess the helicity-dependent parton distribution functions.

Abstract: The Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), as the world's first and only polarized proton collider, offers a unique environment in which to study the spin structure of the proton. In order to study the proton's transverse spin structure, the PHENIX experiment at RHIC took data with transversely polarized beams in 2001-02 and 2005, and it has plans for further running with transverse polarization in 2006 and beyond. Abstract: Results from the PHENIX experiment for the first RHIC run with Au-Au collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 130 GeV are presented. The systematic variation with centrality of charged particle multiplicity, transverse energy, elliptic flow, identified particle spectra and yield ratios, and production of charged particles and neutral pions at high transverse momenta are presented.
