This paper is an overview of the progress in sky radiometer technology and the development of the network called SKYNET. It is found that the technology has produced useful on-site calibration methods, retrieval algorithms, and data analyses from sky radiometer observations of aerosol, cloud, water vapor, and ozone. A formula was proposed for estimating the accuracy of the sky radiometer calibration constant F0 using the improved Langley (IL) method, which was found to be a good approximation to observed monthly mean uncertainty in F0, around 0.5 % to 2.4 % at the Tokyo and Rome sites and smaller values of around 0.3 % to 0.5 % at the mountain sites at Mt. Saraswati and Davos. A new cross IL (XIL) method was also developed to correct an underestimation by the IL method in cases with large aerosol retrieval errors. The root-mean-square difference (RMSD) in aerosol optical thickness (AOT) comparisons with other networks took values of less than 0.02 for λ≥500 nm and a larger value of about 0.03 for shorter wavelengths in city areas and smaller values of less than 0.01 in mountain comparisons. Accuracies of single-scattering albedo (SSA) and size distribution retrievals are affected by the propagation of errors in measurement, calibrations for direct solar and diffuse sky radiation, ground albedo, cloud screening, and the version of the analysis software called the Skyrad pack. SSA values from SKYNET were up to 0.07 larger than those from AERONET, and the major error sources were identified as an underestimation of solid viewing angle (SVA) and cloud contamination. Correction of these known error factors reduced the SSA difference to less than 0.03. Retrievals of other atmospheric constituents by the sky radiometer were also reviewed. Retrieval accuracies were found to be about 0.2 cm for precipitable water vapor amount and 13 DU (Dobson Unit) for column ozone amount. Retrieved cloud optical properties still showed large deviations from validation data, suggesting a need to study the causes of the differences. It is important that these recent studies on improvements presented in the present paper are introduced into the existing operational systems and future systems of the International SKYNET Data Center.

We have estimated the radiative impact produced by an unusually extreme dust and wildfire episode on the performance of a photovoltaic (PV) plant. The dust and wildfire events were mostly active on 26–28 and 29–30 June 2012, respectively. We took advantage of the consecutiveness of both events to separate and derive empirically the radiative effect of dust and smoke aerosols. With this purpose, we employed measurements of aerosol load, radiation and PV power output from a collocated atmospheric station and PV plant located at Burjassot (Valencia, Spain). The empirical estimates were obtained by direct comparison with a summer background day, happened right before the two consecutive case studies. The whole episode is characterized by high aerosol optical depth (AOD) at 500 nm, reaching values up to 1 and 6 for dust and smoke, respectively. Our analysis shows an average daily energy loss of −132 kWh, that represents a fraction of 20% of the energy generated by the PV plant on the reference summer background day. A significant fraction of the energy lost was due to smoke, with a daily maximum of 43% and a daily average of 34%. In case of dust, the energy reduction was moderated, with a daily average of 6%. In terms of instantaneous power reduction, we have obtained peaks of 8 and 51% for dust and smoke, respectively. The energy reduction due to aerosols is strongly dependent on AOD. Further, we have found that the power loss per unit of AOD at 870 nm is useful to separate the radiative impact of different aerosol types. Essentially, the efficiency of smoke to reduce the energy generated by the PV plant is much greater than that of dust. This effect is mainly due to the different optical properties in the near infrared that result in a daily Power Aerosol Forcing Efficiency at 870 nm of −5.7 and −19.1 kW, for dust and smoke, respectively. Our results indicate that both the AOD and aerosol type drive the radiative impact of aerosols on the PV output, confirming that extreme aerosol events may drastically reduce the power generated by operative PV plants. This reduction may be as large as that reported for particle soiling. Therefore, considering both amount and type of aerosols in the PV power analyses is mandatory in order to obtain accurate forecast scenarios and improve the grid integration, especially during extreme episodes.

The atmospheric aerosols have an important role in the radiative forcing in the atmosphere. The solar radiation interacts with the aerosols, being absorbed or scattered in different directions, depending on the absorption and scattering coefficients. The scattering coefficient is highly dependent on the aerosol size, this being dependent on the relative humidity of air, if the aerosols are hygroscopic. The aerosol hygroscopic factor, f(RH), is the factor describing how the scattering coefficient depends on the relative humidity.To understand the relation between scattering coefficients of aerosols and the relative humidity of air, and thus improving our estimations of the radiative effect of urban aerosols, we recently started to measure the aerosol hygroscopic factor, extending previous data series of scattering and absorption properties obtained at our Burjassot site, in Valencia (Spain). Preliminary results already showed values of fRH (75%) between 1.13-1.31.In this study we are interested on analysing the effect of the air mass type on the aerosol properties at our site, mainly on the total scattering coefficients and the hygroscopic factor, so we can understand if the trajectory of the air masses carrying the aerosols influences their hygroscopic properties at our region.The area represented by our station is mainly of urban coastal character. The Burjassot site is located in the suburbs of Valencia city in Spain. The population of the metropolitan area of Valencia is about 1 million. The distance to the Valencia city centre is about 5 km southeast, and the distance to the seacoast is about 10 km east. The site is locally affected by the traffic pollution, but also affected by light industry and occasional agricultural or forest fires. The scattering coefficient measurements at ambient conditions were started at Burjassot site on the late 06’s, by means of a three channel TSI 3563 nephelometer. In 2017, an ACS 1000 (Aerosol Conditioning System, manufactured by Eco Tech Company) with a tandem of Aurora 3000 nephelometers for dry and wet channels were added, although technical problems with the wet channel prevented us to obtain useful results before 2019. Additionally, angular scattering coefficients are simultaneously measured at ambient conditions only, with an Aurora 4000 polar nephelometer, available since 2019.In the current analysis, we use a well-known trajectory computing model like HYSPLIT to determine the path of the air masses during the last 5 days before its arrival at our station. Then, the numerical backtrajectories are automatically analysed by the application of previously developed algorithms to derive the type of dominant air mass, and its origin. Finally, the scattering coefficients and hygroscopic factors are classified in relation to the air mass type, to understand how these aerosol properties are linked to the main air mass types that influence our region.This work is supported jointly by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (MINECO) and the European Regional Development Fund (FEDER) under Projects CGL2017-86966-R and RTI2018-096548-B-I00.

Atmospheric aerosols are an essential climate forcing agent and play a critical role in global climate change. Its effect on Earth’s radiative budget is determined by their optical properties, it is, the scattering and absorption coefficients. The ability of the aerosol to interact with solar radiation is dependent upon particle size and composition, both related to variation in sources. By scattering the solar radiation, the aerosols contribute to the cooling of the underlying atmosphere and the surface; by absorbing the solar radiation, they contribute to the heating of the atmosphere. Different techniques have been developed to measure and characterize different properties of the aerosols in the column and at surface level. At surface level, nephelometers have predominantly been used to measure light scattering properties.In 2017, two nephelometers Aurora 3000, manufactured by Ecotech Company, where deployed at the Burjassot campus from the University of Valencia, for the determination of the total scattering coefficients in wet and dry conditions. In 2019, an Ecotech Aurora 4000 polar nephelometer was added in the Burjassot site for the determination of the scattering coefficients at different angle intervals. The Aurora 4000 model has been specifically designed with a backscatter shutter that can be set any angle between 10º and 90º at up to 17 different positions. It then has the ability to improve the determination of the aerosol asymmetry parameter. Measurements of the total scattering coefficient at ambient conditions, performed with a TSI 3563 nephelometer without sample conditioning, are also available since 2006. The Burjassot measurement site is located in the suburbs of Valencia city, with a total population of about 1 million inhabitants in its metropolitan area, and it is representative of urban conditions. It is mainly affected by anthropogenic aerosols originated by traffic, and sporadically regional agricultural or forest fires, but also by natural aerosols of marine (Mediterranean Sea) and desert (Saharan) origin.In this work, we analyze the total and angular measurements of the scattering coefficient obtained with the total and polar Aurora nephelometers at Burjassot site, including its temporal variability and trends. Specific scenarios characterized by different atmospheric conditions are also studied in order to relate in situ measurements with the composition of atmospheric aerosols from different sources (Saharan dust, forest fires, traffic, etc). The Prede POM sky radiometer is a filter radiometer deployed worldwide in the SKYNET international network. A new method called, Skyrad pack MRI version 2 (MRI v2), is here presented, to retrieve aerosol properties (size distribution, real and imaginary parts of the refractive index, single-scattering albedo, asymmetry factor, lidar ratio, and linear depolarization ratio), and water vapor and ozone column concentrations from the sky radiometer measurements. MRI v2 overcomes two limitations of previous methods (Skyrad pack versions 4.2 and 5, and MRI version 1). One is the use of all the wavelengths of 315, 340, 380, 400, 500, 675, 870, 940, 1020, 1627, and 2200 nm, if available from the sky radiometers, for example, in POM-02 models. The previous methods cannot use the wavelengths of 315, 940, 1627, and 2200 nm. This enables us to provide improved estimates of the aerosol optical properties, covering almost all the wavelengths of solar radiation. The other is the use of measurements in the principal plane geometry in addition to the solar almucantar plane geometry that is used in the previous versions. The measurements in the principal plane are regularly performed, however they are currently not exploited despite being useful in the case of small solar zenith angles, when the scattering angle distribution for almucantars becomes too small to yield useful information. Moreover, in the inversion algorithm, MRI v2 optimizes the smoothness constraints of the spectral dependencies of the refractive index and size distribution, and changes the contribution of the diffuse radiances to the cost function according to the aerosol optical depth. These overcome issues with the estimation of the size distribution and single-scattering albedo in the Skyrad pack version 4.2. The scattering model used here allows for non-spherical particles, improving results for mineral dust and permitting to evaluate the depolarization ratio. An assessment of the retrieval uncertainties using synthetic measurement show that best performance is obtained when the aerosol optical depths is larger than 0.2 at 500 nm. Improvements over the Skyrad pack versions 4.2 and 5 are obtained for the retrieved size distribution, imaginary part of the refractive index, single-scattering albedo, and lidar ratio at Tsukuba, Japan, while yielding comparable retrievals of the aerosol optical depth, real part of the refractive index, and asymmetry factor. A radiative closure study using surface solar irradiances from Baseline Surface Radiation Network and the parameters retrieved from MRI v2 showed consistency, with a positive bias of the simulated global irradiance, about +24 Wm−2 (+3 %). Furthermore, the MRI v2 retrievals of the refractive index, single-scattering albedo, asymmetry factor, and size distribution have been found in agreement with integrated profiles of aircraft in-situ measurements of two Saharan dust events at the Cape Verde archipelago, during the SAVEX-D 2015 field campaign.

This paper overviews the progress in the sky radiometer technology and development of the network called SKYNET. It is found that the technology has produced useful on-site calibration methods, retrieval algorithms, and data analyses from the sky radiometer observation of aerosol, cloud, water vapor and ozone. Increasing collaborations of users in the SKYNET community are becoming a useful platform for research and operation. The paper also presents issues of the technology for future development.

The Saharan Air Layer (SAL) in the summertime eastern Atlantic is typically well mixed and 3–4 km deep, overlying the marine boundary layer (MBL). In this paper, we show experimental evidence that at times a very different structure can be observed. During the AERosol properties – Dust (AER-D) airborne campaign in August 2015, the typical structure described above was observed most of the time, and was associated with a moderate dust content yielding an aerosol optical depth (AOD) of 0.3–0.4 at 355 nm. In an intense event, however, an unprecedented vertical structure was observed close to the eastern boundary of the basin, displaying an uneven vertical distribution and a very large AOD (1.5–2), with most of the dust in a much lower level than usual (0.3–2 km). Estimated dust concentrations and column loadings for all flights during the campaign spanned 300–5500 and 0.8–7.5 g m−2, respectively. The shortwave direct radiative impact of the intense dust event has been evaluated to be as large as -260±30 and -120±15 W m−2 at the surface and top of atmosphere (TOA), respectively. We also report the correlation of this event with anomalous lightning activity in the Canary Islands. In all cases, our measurements detected a broad distribution of aerosol sizes, ranging from ∼0.1 to ∼80 µm (diameter), thus highlighting the presence of giant particles. Giant dust particles were also found in the MBL. We note that most aerosol models may miss the giant particles due to the fact that they use size bins up to 10–25 µm. The unusual vertical structure and the giant particles may have implications for dust transport over the Atlantic during intense events and may affect the estimate of dust deposited to the ocean. We believe that future campaigns could focus more on events with high aerosol load and that instrumentation capable of detecting giant particles will be key to dust observations in this part of the world.

Using ground-based data, meteorological observations, and atmospheric environmental monitoring data, a comparative analysis of the microphysical and optical properties, and radiative forcing of aerosols was conducted between three stations in different developed environments during a severe air pollution episode during the Spring Festival over Beijing. During the most polluted period, the daily peak values of the aerosol optical depth were ~1.62, ~1.73, and ~0.74, which were about 2.6, 2.9, and 2.1 times higher than the background levels at the CAMS, Xianghe, and Shangdianzi sites, respectively. The daily peak values of the single scattering albedo were ~0.95, ~0.96, and ~0.87. The volume of fine-mode particles varied from 0.04 to 0.21 µm3 µm–2, 0.06 to 0.17 µm3 µm–2, and 0.01 to 0.10 µm3 µm–2, which were about 0.3 to 5.8, 1.1 to 4.7, and 1.2 to 8.9 times greater than the background values, respectively. The daily absorption aerosol optical depth was ~0.01 to ~0.13 at CAMS, ~0.03 to ~0.14 at Xianghe, and ~0.01 to ~0.09 at Shangdianzi, and the absorption Angstrom exponents reflected a significant increase in organic aerosols over CAMS and Xianghe and in black carbon over Shangdianzi. Aerosol radiative forcing at the bottom of the atmosphere varied from –20 to –130, –40 to –150, and –10 to –110 W m–2 for the whole holiday period, indicating the cooling effect. The potential source contribution function and concentration-weighted trajectory analysis showed that Beijing, the southern parts of Hebei and Shanxi, and the central northern part of Shandong contributed greatly to the pollution.

The most destructive wildfire experienced in Spain since 2004 occurred close to Valencia in summer 2012. A total of 48.500ha were affected by two wildfires, which were mostly active during 29-30 June. The fresh smoke plume was detected at the Burjassot measurement station simultaneously to a severe dust episode. We propose an empirical method to evaluate the dust and smoke mixing and its impact on the microphysical and optical properties. For this, we combine direct-sun measurements with a Cimel CE-318 sun-photometer with an inversion methodology, and the Mie theory to derive the column-integrated size distribution, single scattering albedo (SSA) and asymmetry parameter (g). The mixing of dust and smoke greatly increased the aerosol load and modified the background aerosol properties. Mineral dust increased the aerosol optical depth (AOD) up to 1, while the smoke plume caused an extreme AOD peak of 8. The size distribution of the mixture was bimodal, with a fine and coarse modes dominated by the smoke particles and mineral dust, respectively. The SSA and g for the dust-smoke mixture show a marked sensitivity on the smoke mixing-ratio, mainly at longer wavelengths. Mineral dust and smoke share a similar SSA at 440nm (~0.90), but with opposite spectral dependency. A small dust contribution to the total AOD substantially affects the SSA of the mixture, and also SSA at 1020nm increases from 0.87 to 0.95. This leads to a different spectral behaviour of SSA that changes from positive (smoke plume) to negative (dust), depending on the dust and smoke mixing-ratio.

Simultaneous PM2.5, PM10 and columnar (ground and satellite based) AOD measurements have been analyzed at Burjassot site in the metropolitan area of Valencia (Spain) during the period 2007–2016. The site is representative of a south European city in the Western Mediterranean coastal area, influenced by local urban pollution but also from frequent Saharan dust events. First, multiannual statistics were performed to characterize the main aerosol burden characteristics. The averages and standard deviations resulted 18 ± 9 μg m−3, 25 ± 19 μg m−3, 0.15 ± 0.11, 0.23 ± 0.17, 0.19 ± 0.15 and 1.2 ± 0.3 for PM2.5, PM10, AERONET AOD, MODIS Terra AOD, MODIS Aqua AOD, and AERONET Angstrom exponent AE, respectively. The AOD is always referred to 550 nm. PM10 and AOD showed seasonal patterns with maxima in summer and minima in winter. However, PM2.5 and AE did not show such an evident seasonality. The relationship between surface and columnar measurements show a poor correlation (r down to 0.30) for daily values, although the correlation increases to r up to 0.90 for yearly averages. The relationship between PM and AOD becomes more consistent when the databases are binned in intervals of 0.05 AOD. Results for AERONET and MODIS AOD are very similar, although for daily averages is slightly worse for satellite than ground based measurements. In order to explain some seasonality effects found, the mixing layer height has been included in the analysis. Results show that the correlation is maximum when PM2.5 is used and the mixing layer height is greater than 1 000 m (r > 0.90).

Aerosol optical properties were retrieved from two years' worth of Sunphotometer measurements at Urumqi, an urban station in western China. Distinct seasonal variations of aerosol optical properties were revealed. During the heating season, mean aerosol optical depth at 550 nm (τ a ), Angstrom exponent calculated from aerosol optical depth at wavelength of 440 and 870 nm (α) as well as PM 2.5 concentration were 0.58 ± 0.33, 1.11 ± 0.34 and 79.5 ± 69.6 μg m − 3 , respectively, which contrasted their counterparts during the non-heating season of 0.32 ± 0.22, 0.79 ± 0.26, and 35.0 ± 20.1 μg m − 3 . Seasonal variations of τ a and PM 2.5 at Urumqi contrasted with corresponding values in eastern China. Enhancement of τ a was associated with fine mode radius (r f ) exceeding 0.15 μm. Relative humidity frequently exceeded 80% during the heating season, which probably resulted in r f > 0.15 as a result of the hygroscopic growth under the humid environment. r f was larger than value assigned to the fine-mode dominated aerosol models used in the dark-target algorithm of the Moderate Resolution Spectroradiometer (MODIS). Annual mean single scattering albedo at 550 nm (ω) was 0.87 that was close to the value assigned to the absorption aerosol model in the MODIS algorithm. ω increased as τ a increased, probably as a result of the growth of aerosol size. ω of dust aerosols at Urumqi was slightly lower than that in dust source and downwind regions. Substantial differences in aerosol optical and physical properties and their seasonal variation between western and eastern China require maintaining long-term ground based remote sensing aerosols, which would be expected to play an important role in studying aerosol's effects on weather, climate and atmospheric environment.

We have developed two hyperspectral radiometer systems which require no moving parts, shade rings or motorised tracking, making them ideally suited for autonomous use in the inhospitable remote marine environment. Both systems are able to measure direct and diffuse hyperspectral irradiance in the wavelength range 350–1050 nm at 6 nm (Spectrometer 1) or 3.5 nm (Spectrometer 2) resolution. Marine field trials along a 100° transect (between 50° N and 50° S) of the Atlantic Ocean resulted in close agreement with existing commercially available instruments in measuring (1) photosynthetically available radiation (PAR), with both spectrometers giving regression slopes close to unity (Spectrometer 1: 0.960; Spectrometer 2: 1.006) and R2 ∼ 0.96; (2) irradiant energy, with R2 ∼ 0.98 and a regression slope of 0.75 which can be accounted for by the difference in wavelength integration range; and (3) hyperspectral irradiance where the agreement on average was between 2 and 5 %. Two long duration land-based field campaigns of up to 18 months allowed both spectrometers to be well calibrated. This was also invaluable for empirically correcting for the wider field of view (FOV) of the spectrometers in comparison with the current generation of sun photometers ( ∼ 7.5° compared with ∼ 1°). The need for this correction was also confirmed and independently quantified by atmospheric radiative transfer modelling and found to be a function of aerosol optical depth (AOD) and solar zenith angle. Once Spectrometer 2 was well calibrated and the FOV effect corrected for, the RMSE in retrievals of AOD when compared with a CIMEL sun photometer were reduced to ∼ 0.02–0.03 with R2 > 0.95 at wavelengths 440, 500, 670 and 870 nm. Corrections for the FOV as well as ship motion were applied to the data from the marine field trials. This resulted in AOD500 nm ranging between 0.05 in the clear background marine aerosol regions and ∼ 0.5 within the Saharan dust plume. The RMSE between the handheld Microtops sun photometer and Spectrometer 2 was between 0.047 and 0.057 with R2 > 0.94.

In-situ aerosol absorption properties measured in Valencia (Spain) for four years, from February 2011 to February 2015, have been analysed. Spectral absorption properties have been obtained using a seven-wavelength Aethalometer AE-31 which covers the range from UV (370 nm) to IR (950 nm). In order to obtain the absorption coefficients, compensation parameters have been calculated for the Aethalometer considering seasonal and spectral differences. For this multiyear measurement period, seasonal site-specific calibration parameters have been obtained. Furthermore, estimations of the absorption Angstrom Exponent (α abs ) have been calculated using the seven Aethalometer wavelengths. The averaged absorption coefficients (plus/minus the standard deviation) obtained for the seven channels range between 9 ± 4 Mm −1 at 950 nm and 33 ± 18 Mm −1 at 370 nm. These results are typical of a moderate polluted environment. The obtained absorption Angstrom Exponent (plus/minus the standard deviation) is 1.42 ± 0.08, which suggests the presence of brown carbon or black carbon coated by non-absorbing particles in our site. Seasonal and daily variations, together with the effect of both the boundary layer height and traffic, have been also studied. Strong seasonal differences in the absorption coefficient are found, mainly due to seasonal variation of the mixing layer height. On the opposite, the study of the diurnal variations of the absorption Angstrom Exponent proves that this parameter is more affected by traffic emissions than by the evolution of the mixing layer height.

SKYNET and Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) retrieved aerosol single scattering albedo (SSA) values of four sites, Chiba (Japan), Pune (India), Valencia (Spain), and Seoul (Korea), were compared to understand the factors behind often noted large SSA differences between them. SKYNET and AERONET algorithms are found to produce nearly same SSAs for similarity in input data, suggesting that SSA differences between them are primarily due to quality of input data due to different calibration and/or observation protocols as well as difference in quality assurance criteria. The most plausible reason for high SSAs in SKYNET is found to be underestimated calibration constant for sky radiance (ΔΩ). The disk scan method (scan area: 1° × 1° area of solar disk) of SKYNET is noted to produce stable wavelength-dependent ΔΩ values in comparison to those determined from the integrating sphere used by AERONET to calibrate sky radiance. Aerosol optical thickness (AOT) difference between them can be the next important factor for their SSA difference, if AOTs between them are not consistent. Inconsistent values of surface albedo while analyzing data of SKYNET and AERONET can also bring SSA difference between them, but the effect of surface albedo is secondary. The aerosol nonsphericity effect is found to be less important for SSA difference between these two networks.

We examined long-term aerosol optical depth (AOD) trends over 53 sites across the globe which comprise 49 sites from the Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) and 4 sites from the Sky radiometer Network (SKYNET) during 1995–2018. Most of these sites are located in remote and isolated aged-background regions, and few are in urban/semi-urban sites having averaged AOD ∼0.1 at 500 nm. These selected sites have a global distribution including tropical, mid-latitudes, high-latitudes and Polar regions. Among them, there are 14 high-altitude stations (∼1028–5050 m amsl), including Himalayan and Polar regions. The main objective of the present work is to evaluate the AOD trends over the aged-background sites across the globe. We found that significant number of sites located in North-South America, Europe, Arctic and Australia have statistically significant and negative trends varied from −6.3x 10 − 3 to −1.0x 10 − 3 AOD year−1. The negative trends over these sites could be attributed to reduction in anthropogenic emission. Furthermore, there are mixed trends of positive as well as negative over Asian and southern oceanic regions including Antarctica. Some of the trends are weak and statistically non-significant, probably due to non-availability of long-term ground based data. However, the AOD trends over these regions show increasing tendency with statistically significant trends of 8.0x 10 − 4 to 4.7x 10 − 3 AOD year−1. The present study has also many important aspects on global and regional climate change at high-mountain and aged-background sites in particular, where the satellite based measurements are inaccurate and biased due to extremely low AOD.

During the AER-D airborne campaign in August 2015, the typical structure described above was observed most of the times, and was associated with a moderate dust content yielding an Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) of 0.3–0.4 at 355 nm. In an intense event, however, an unprecedented vertical structure was observed close to the Eastern boundary of the basin, displaying an uneven vertical distribution and a very large AOD (1.5–2), with most of the dust in a much lower level than usual (0.3–2 km). Estimated dust concentrations and column loadings spanned 300–5500 μg m−3 and 0.8–7.5 g m−2, respectively. The shortwave direct radiative impact of the intense dust event has been evaluated to be as large as −260 ± 30 and −120 ± 15 W m−2 at the surface and top of atmosphere, respectively. This event was also correlated with anomalous lightning activity in the Canary Islands. In all cases, our measurements detected a broad distribution of aerosol sizes, ranging from ~ 0.1 to ~ 80 μm (diameter), thus highlighting the presence of giant particles. Giant dust particles were also found in the MBL. We note that most aerosol models may miss the giant particles due to the fact that they use size bins up to 10–25 μm. The unusual vertical structure and the giant particles may have implications for dust transport over the Atlantic during intense events, and may affect the estimate of dust deposited to the Ocean. We believe that future campaigns should focus more on events with high aerosol load, and that instrumentation capable of detecting giant particles will be key to dust observations in this part of the world.

We present the first multiyear set of simultaneous measurements of the global ultraviolet-B radiation and its two components: direct and diffuse. The measurements have been taken with four YES-UVB-1 radiometers: two radiometers to measure the diffuse radiation, one provided with a shadow band and the other with a shadow disk on a Sun tracker; a radiometer to measure the global horizontal radiation; and a Sun-tracking radiometer to measure the direct radiation with an especially designed radiance collimator. The diffuse minute-values measured with both instruments agree within a coefficient correlation of 1.00. The diffuse component represents at least 50% of the global UVB (ultraviolet-B) radiation. The minute values of global UVB irradiance obtained by adding the direct and diffuse components concur with the measured global irradiance. Therefore, the measurement of the direct irradiance enables the estimation of the diffuse component, and gives an insight into the factors that affect its value, especially aerosols.

Aerosol optical properties were derived from ground-based sunphotometer observations between 2009-2013 at three urban sites of Shenyang, Anshan, Fushun in northeastern China. The annual means for extinction aerosol optical depths (EAOD) at 500 nm were 0.57±0.38, 0.52±0.35, and 0.41±0.31 at Shenyang, Anshan, Fushun, respectively. The corresponding annual means for the extinction Angstrom exponents (EAE) computed for the wavelengths of 440 and 870 nm were 0.86±0.32, 0.86±0.34 and 0.91±0.35, respectively, indicating that urban area of Northeast China were affected by both coarse and fine particles. Hygroscopic growth in summer and incursions of dust aerosols in spring were evidently revealed from the analysis of the relationship between EAE and δ EAE (the EAE difference, δ EAE=EAE(440,670)−EAE(670,870)). The annual mean absorption aerosol optical depths (AAOD 440 nm ) values at Shenyang, Anshan, Fushun were 0.15±0.11, 0.10±0.07, 0.08±0.04, respectively. The annual mean absorption Angstrom exponents (AAE 440–870 nm ) values were 0.86±0.24, 1.19±0.39, 1.33±0.36 at Shenyang, Anshan, Fushun, respectively. When the AAEs were close to unity at Anshan, the absorption aerosol particles evidently consisted of black carbon from coal combustion and motor vehicles. Larger AAEs at Fushun were indicative of absorbing aerosols mainly from biomass burning and mineral dust. The AAE at Shenyang was

Desert dust interacts with shortwave (SW) and longwave (LW) radiation, influencing the Earth radiation budget and the atmospheric vertical structure. Uncertainties on the dust role are large in the LW spectral range, where few measurements are available and the dust optical properties are not well constrained. The first airborne measurements of LW irradiance vertical profiles over the Mediterranean were carried out during the Ground-based and Airborne Measurements of Aerosol Radiative Forcing (GAMARF) campaign, which took place in spring 2008 at the island of Lampedusa. The experiment was aimed at estimating the vertical profiles of the SW and LW aerosol direct radiative forcing (ADRF) and heating rates (AHR), taking advantage of vertically resolved measurements of irradiances, meteorological parameters, and aerosol microphysical and optical properties. Two cases, characterized respectively by the presence of a homogeneous dust layer (3 May, with aerosol optical depth, AOD, at 500 nm of 0.59) and by a low aerosol burden (5 May, with AOD of 0.14), are discussed. A radiative transfer model was initialized with the measured vertical profiles and with different aerosol properties, derived from measurements or from the literature. The simulation of the irradiance vertical profiles, in particular, provides the opportunity to constrain model-derived estimates of the AHR. The measured SW and LW irradiances were reproduced when the model was initialized with the measured aerosol size distributions and refractive indices. For the dust case, the instantaneous (solar zenith angle, SZA, of 55.1°) LW-to-SW ADRF ratio was 23% at the surface and 11% at the top of the atmosphere (TOA), with a more significant LW contribution on a daily basis (52% at the surface and 26% at TOA), indicating a relevant reduction of the SW radiative effects. The AHR profiles followed the aerosol extinction profile, with comparable peaks in the SW (0.72 ± 0.11 K d−1) and in the LW (−0.52 ± 0.12 K d−1) for the considered SZA. On a daily basis, the absolute value of the heating rate was larger in the LW than in the SW, producing a net cooling effect at specific levels. These are quite unexpected results, emphasizing the important role of LW radiation.

The aerosol optical depth (AOD) and Angstrom exponent (α) obtained from MODIS Terra and Aqua over the coastal urban site of Burjassot (Spain) during the period 2002–2011 have been compared with retrievals from AERONET (AErosol RObotic NETwork) and ESR (European Skynet Radiometers) in order to investigate the performance of MODIS algorithms over land and ocean, respectively. The comparison of the MODIS aerosol products C051 over both land and ocean has been performed for a window size of 50 km × 50 km centred on the monitoring site. The correlation coefficients obtained from the comparison of the AOD from MODIS with that from ground-based measurements are 0.85 and 0.87 over land for Terra and Aqua, respectively, and 0.90 over ocean for both satellites. For the comparison of α, the correlation coefficients are 0.25 and 0.30 over land and 0.73 and 0.66 over ocean for Terra and Aqua, respectively. Since our analysis shows that the MODIS algorithm over ocean characterizes better the aerosol parameters over the coastal urban site of Burjassot (Spain), this dataset has been used to perform a multi-year analysis of the aerosol properties in order to derive a local climatology over this site. The mean AOD at 550 nm is 0.16, with percentiles 25 and 75 of 0.07 and 0.21. These results indicate a relatively clear atmosphere in the area in spite of local anthropogenic and remote dust sources.

The estimation of the precipitable water vapour content (W) with high temporal and spatial resolution is of great interest to both meteorological and climatological studies. Several methodologies based on remote sensing techniques have been recently developed in order to obtain accurate and frequent measurements of this atmospheric parameter. Among them, the relative low cost and easy deployment of sun–sky radiometers, or sun photometers, operating in several international networks, allowed the development of automatic estimations of W from these instruments with high temporal resolution. However, the great problem of this methodology is the estimation of the sun-photometric calibration parameters. The objective of this paper is to validate a new methodology based on the hypothesis that the calibration parameters characterizing the atmospheric transmittance at 940 nm are dependent on vertical profiles of temperature, air pressure and moisture typical of each measurement site. To obtain the calibration parameters some simultaneously seasonal measurements of W, from independent sources, taken over a large range of solar zenith angle and covering a wide range of W, are needed. In this work yearly GNSS/GPS datasets were used for obtaining a table of photometric calibration constants and the methodology was applied and validated in three European ESR-SKYNET network sites, characterized by different atmospheric and climatic conditions: Rome, Valencia and Aosta. Results were validated against the GNSS/GPS and AErosol RObotic NETwork (AERONET) W estimations. In both the validations the agreement was very high, with a percentage RMSD of about 6, 13 and 8 % in the case of GPS intercomparison at Rome, Aosta and Valencia, respectively, and of 8 % in the case of AERONET comparison in Valencia. Analysing the results by W classes, the present methodology was found to clearly improve W estimation at low W content when compared against AERONET in terms of % bias, bringing the agreement with the GPS (considered the reference one) from a % bias of 5.76 to 0.52.

In August 2015, the AER-D campaign made use of the FAAM research aircraft based in Cape Verde, and targeted mineral dust. First results will be shown here. The campaign had multiple objectives: (1) lidar dust mapping for the validation of satellite and model products; (2) validation of sunphotometer remote sensing with airborne measurements; (3) coordinated measurements with the CATS lidar on the ISS; (4) radiative closure studies; and (5) the validation of a new model of dustsonde.

This study presents the results of the 4th Filter Radiometer Comparison that was held in Davos, Switzerland, between September 28 and October 16, 2015. Thirty filter radiometers and spectroradiometers from 12 countries participated including reference instruments from global aerosol networks. The absolute differences of all instruments compared to the reference have been based on the WMO criterion defined as 95 % of the measured data has to be within 0.005 ± 0.001/m (where m is the air mass). At least 24 out of 29 instruments achieved this goal at both 500 and 865 nm, while 12 out of 17 and 13 out of 21 achieved this at 368 and 412 nm, respectively. While searching for sources of differences among different instruments, it was found that all individual differences linked to Rayleigh, NO2, ozone, water vapor calculations and related optical depths and air mass calculations were smaller than 0.01 in AOD at 500 and 865 nm. Different cloud detecting algorithms used have been compared. Ångström exponent calculations showed relatively large differences among different instruments partly because of the sensitivity of this parameter at low AOD conditions. The overall low deviations of these AOD results and the high accuracy of reference aerosol network instruments demonstrated a promising framework to achieve homogeneity, compatibility and harmonization among the different spectral AOD networks in the near-future.

Variations in the optical properties of aerosols and their radiative forcing were investigated based on long-term synchronous observations made at three-minute intervals from 2011 to 2015 over seven adjacent CARSNET (China Aerosol Remote Sensing NETwork) urban (Hangzhou), suburban (Xiaoshan, Fuyang, LinAn, Tonglu, Jiande) and rural (ChunAn) stations in the Yangtze River Delta region, eastern China. The aerosol optical depth (AOD) varied from 0.68 to 0.76, with two peaks in June and September, and decreased from the eastern coast to western inland areas. The ratio of the AOD of fine-mode particles to the total AOD was > 0.90 and the extinction Angström exponent was > 1.20 throughout the year at all seven sites. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) C6 retrieval AOD was validated by comparison with ground-based observations. The correlation coefficients (R2) between the MODIS C6 AOD data and the values measured on the ground were ~ 0.73–0.89. The single-scattering albedo varied from 0.91 to 0.94, indicating that scattering aerosol particles are dominant in this region. The real parts of the refractive index were ~ 1.41–1.43, with no significant difference among the seven urban, suburban and rural sites. Large imaginary parts of the refractive index were seen in August at all urban, suburban and rural sites. The fine-mode radii in the Yangtze River Delta region were ~ 0.2–0.3 μm with a volume of 0.10–0.12 μm3 and the coarse-mode radii were ~ 2.0 μm with a volume close to 0.07 μm3. The fine-mode aerosols were obviously larger in June and September than in other months at almost the sites. The absorption AOD was low in the winter. The absorption Angström exponent and the extinction Angström exponent were used to classify the different types of aerosol and the components of mixtures. The aerosols caused negative radiative forcing both at the Earth's surface and at the top of the atmosphere all year round in the Yangtze River Delta region of eastern China.

The daily values of UVB irradiation (290–315 nm), IUVB, and the broadband total irradiation (300–2800 nm), IT, measured on a horizontal plane have been correlated for the period 2000–2008 at 16 measurement sites in Spain. The results have been compared with the daily experimental values registered at the same sites during the period 2009–2011. The coefficients of determination R2 obtained by applying a linear regression are higher than 0.88 for all sites and increase to 0.94 when using a quadratic regression. When all data are considered together, the values of R2 are 0.91 and 0.97 for the linear and quadratic regressions, respectively. Three different clearness indices, which are dimensionless parameters, have been also used in order to reduce the uncertainties of the estimations and to reduce the local nature of the coefficients: (1) the UVB clearness index, kTUVB = IUVB/I0UVB; (2) the modified UVB clearness index, k′TUVB and (3) the estimated UVB clearness index, k*TUVB. The results show a strong dependence on the solar zenith angle. The bi-dimensional regression of kTUVB as a function of the solar zenith angle and the clearness index, kT, substantially improves the correlation, with R2 values higher than 0.81 for all sites. Finally, a formula relating kTUVB and kT, valid for latitudes between 36°N and 44°N, has been obtained: kTUVB = 0.064 kT – 0.0011 θz – 1.24 E-05 ϕ + 7.6 E-05 λ + 0.063, where θz represents the solar zenith angle (in degrees), ϕ is the latitude (in degrees) of the site and λ is the distance to the sea (in km). We have compared the experimental values for the period 2009–2011 with those estimated using this expression. For this, the coefficient of determination (R2) is 0.87, with a MBD of –3.4%, a RMSE of 21% and a NRMSE of 8.7%.

The aerosol radiative forcing for the period 2003–2011 has been analyzed in Burjassot, Spain, an urban coastal site on the western Mediterranean, using measurements of global solar irradiance and aerosol properties, as well as simulated data. The aerosol radiative forcing was calculated at 5 minute intervals, and then integrated over 24 h to obtain daily mean values for 200 complete days under cloud-free skies. The monthly mean values of the aerosol radiative forcing showed a clear variation during the year, associated to the annual variability of the aerosol optical depth at 500 nm, ranging from − 6 to − 29 Wm− 2 at the surface, and from − 1.5 to − 3.9 Wm− 2 at the top of the atmosphere, with mean values for the whole period of − 17 ± 10 Wm− 2 and − 2.2 ± 1.3 Wm− 2, respectively. The aerosol radiative forcing efficiency was found to be − 139 ± 3 Wm− 2 at the surface and − 19.2 ± 0.3 Wm− 2 at the top of the atmosphere. These negative values, which correspond to cooling effects, suggest a significant absorption of solar radiation by the atmosphere, showing the important role of atmospheric aerosols in this urban site of the Mediterranean.

This study analyzes the atmospheric particles concentration at ground level during a severe pollution event that took place in Valencia (Spain) from 7 to 12 February 2011. The episode was related to a subtropical anticyclone system that affected the Iberian Peninsula and western Europe. The dominant anticyclone imposed an extended low gradient pressure system and a low mixing layer height in the region that caused the accumulation of pollutants over the western Mediterranean. Moreover, the stagnant conditions led to the formation of the local sea breeze, accompanied by an increase of relative humidity and the decrease of ambient temperature. Our study is mainly focused on the analysis of particulate matter levels (PM10 and PM2.5) and the concentration of black carbon (BC) measured at the Burjassot station, Valencia (Spain). BC and PM levels were found to steadily increase during the event (from 3.2 μg/m 3 and 33 μg/m 3 before the event to 4.9 μg/m 3 and 61 μg/m 3 for BC and PM2.5, respectively) and abruptly decreased to 1.3 μg/m 3 and 14 μg/m 3 , respectively, after a cold front swept the Iberian Peninsula, bringing fresh air from the Atlantic and increasing the mixing layer height, thus ventilating and diluting the accumulated pollutants. As a consequence, the EU limit of 50 μg/m 3 for PM10 size fraction was exceeded during days 7 to 12 February 2011 at Valencia, Spain.

The Surface Processes and Ecosystem Changes Through Response Analysis (SPECTRA) Barrax Campaigns were validation campaigns developed in the framework of the SPECTRA mission in order to verify that the geophysical data products provided by satellite imagery are consistent with the measurements made by independent means. Two campaigns took place in Barrax, Spain, during the summers of 2003 and 2004. This paper presents the results of the characterization of the atmospheric composition from solar radiation, radiosoundings, and lidar measurements. Several potentially interesting situations involving atmospheric layers with different types of aerosols and water content are discussed. The presence of a residual layer capping the mixing layer during some days of the 2003 campaign and the arrival of a dust-rich air mass from the Sahara on the last two days of the 2004 campaign provide some relevant aerosol vertical profiles to test atmospheric correction algorithms. The study of the effects of these atmospheric situations on radiative transfer calculations is required in the development and validation of advanced atmospheric correction codes for the new generation of Earth Observation Systems. © 2007 IEEE.

The European Skynet Radiometers network (EuroSkyRad or ESR) has been recently established as a research network of European PREDE sun-sky radiometers. Moreover, ESR is federated with SKYNET, an international network of PREDE sun-sky radiometers mostly present in East Asia. In contrast to SKYNET, the European network also integrates users of the CIMEL CE318 sky–sun photometer. Keeping instrumental duality in mind, a set of open source algorithms has been developed consisting of two modules for (1) the retrieval of direct sun products (aerosol optical depth, wavelength exponent and water vapor) from the sun extinction measurements; and (2) the inversion of the sky radiance to derive other aerosol optical properties such as size distribution, single scattering albedo or refractive index. In this study we evaluate the ESR direct sun products in comparison with the AERosol RObotic NETwork (AERONET) products. Specifically, we have applied the ESR algorithm to a CIMEL CE318 and PREDE POM simultaneously for a 4-yr database measured at the Burjassot site (Valencia, Spain), and compared the resultant products with the AERONET direct sun measurements obtained with the same CIMEL CE318 sky–sun photometer. The comparison shows that aerosol optical depth differences are mostly within the nominal uncertainty of 0.003 for a standard calibration instrument, and fall within the nominal AERONET uncertainty of 0.01–0.02 for a field instrument in the spectral range 340 to 1020 nm. In the cases of the Ångström exponent and the columnar water vapor, the differences are lower than 0.02 and 0.15 cm, respectively. Therefore, we present an open source code program that can be used with both CIMEL and PREDE sky radiometers and whose results are equivalent to AERONET and SKYNET retrievals.

In this work, we present a simple model that allows us to easily obtain the character of the dominant air mass for any location in the Northern Hemisphere at any time. Specifically, in this article the model has been tested at Valencia, Spain, for the years from 2006 to 2009. The classification of the air masses is performed analysing their trajectories over pre-defined source regions in the Northern Hemisphere. Daily trajectories were simulated by the hybrid single-particle Lagrangian integrated trajectory model HYSPLIT and then classified by our model. In order to verify our classification results, those cases identified as African were compared with the Saharan dust intrusions reported for Valencia by the Ministerio de Medio Ambiente y Medio Rural y Marino MARM in collaboration with the Centro Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas CSIC. The model we present in this article can be applied in the selection of an optimum aerosol model for the atmospheric correction of remote sensing products.

Measurements of aerosol scattering properties obtained during the period from March 2006 to December 2010 at Valencia (Spain) have been analyzed. The total aerosol scattering (σsp) and backscattering (σbsp) coefficients were measured using a TSI Model 3563 three-wavelength integrating nephelometer. From the measurements of σsp and σbsp, it was possible to determine also the scattering Angstrom exponent (αs). For the entire measurement period, the mean values (±standard deviation) at 550 nm are: 80 ± 50 Mm−1 for σsp; 8 ± 5 Mm−1 for σbsp; and 1.6 ± 0.3 for αs. These results indicate a moderate polluted atmosphere characterized by fine particles. The daily variation for all seasons shows clear patterns in the scattering properties of the atmospheric aerosols, due to the traffic and the evolution of the boundary layer throughout the day. This influence of traffic was analyzed, observing different daily patterns for weekdays (Monday–Friday) and weekends (Saturday and Sunday).

Ultraviolet erythemal radiation (UVER) values have been simulated for different values of column ozone and aerosol optical depth (AOD) using a multiple scattering model: SBDART. The results show that UVER decreased when atmospheric ozone and aerosols increased, with the ozone having greater influence than AOD. To quantify these dependencies the influence of aerosols on the simulated values of UVER has been analysed for different ozone values. This dependence was linear. Similarly, to quantify the influence of ozone on the UVER values this was simulated for fixed values of AOD while varying the column ozone. The expression of this dependence was found to be a second-order polynomial. We also analysed the dependence of the experimental UVER values on the total column ozone and the AOD at 500 nm. Daily values of UVER were used, normalized with respect to a reference value. It was seen that the modified clearness index, k*tUVER, decreased as the total column ozone increased and also as the 500 nm AOD increased. These linear relationships were obtained and were found to be of the same order for the different intervals of AOD and for those total column ozone intervals for which the greater number of experimental data were available. At the same time, the relations between the modified UVER clearness index and the ozone, as between the modified clearness index and the AOD, showed an annual pattern. During the 2002 summer, the VELETA 2002 field campaign has been carried out at the Sierra Nevada Massif, close to Granada in South-Eastern Spain. During the campaign, CIMEL CE-318 robotic radiometer has been one of the key instruments in the characterization of the atmospheric aerosol columnar properties. This kind of radiometers have been operated at Motril, a coastal location at sea level, Pitres (1200 m a.s.l.), located in the South slope of Sierra Nevada Massif, Las Sabinas (2200m a.s.l.), located on the north slope of the mountain range, and Armilla (680m a.s.l.), located in the valley. The principal feature of the locations is that they provide a strong altitudinal gradient. This work presents the evolution of changes followed by the atmospheric aerosol in the vertical column. Columnar aerosol properties have been derived from the CIMEL CE-318 measurements obtained at the four stations. In this sense, the combination of solar direct measurements and sky radiances were used to retrieve the aerosol columnar size distributions by means of Nakajima's code. Marked changes in the atmospheric aerosol along the campaign have been explained in terms of the synoptic conditions. A detailed study of the columnar properties at the different places has been done. Changes in the spectral dependence of the single scattering albedo under the influence of different air masses have been discussed. The size distributions have been fitted to a bimodal lognormal distribution function model, and the associated parameters have been correlated with aerosol optical depth or Angstrom exponent. In some cases, it has been necessary to develop different correlations for cases affected or non-affected by the arrival of Saharan dust. In the case of Armilla (680 m a.s.l.) and Las Sabinas (2200 m a.s.l.), the small horizontal distance allow us to consider that both stations are representative of the same atmospheric column, a fact that has been used to analyse the daily evolution of the mixing layer in the north slope. Imaging spectrometers operating in the solar spectrum measure the upwelling reflected solar radiation, and are an important tool in the bio/geochemical characterization of the Earth system. Surface reflectance is usually the starting point for the retrieval of biophysical parameters from remote measurements. Reliable radiometric and spectral calibrations and accurate atmospheric correction are mandatory in the interpretation of the surface reflectance. A complete surface reflectance retrieval scheme specifically designed for ultra-fine spectral resolution (bandwidth from 10 to 2 nm) and spatial resolution (pixel size less than 10 m) imaging spectrometers is presented in this work. The assessment of the spectral calibration is coupled to the removal of the atmospheric distortion so that maps of surface reflectance are derived, as well as columnar water vapor (CWV) maps, estimations of aerosol optical thickness (AOT) and updated sensor gain coefficients and spectral calibration. Radiative transfer calculations are performed by an optimized version of the MODTRAN4 code, which is run before processing each image. The method is tested against Compact Airborne Spectrographic Imager (CASI) 1500 images acquired during the ESA SENtinel-2 and FLuorescence EXperiment (SEN2FLEX) campaigns held in the Barrax (La Mancha, Spain) study site during June and July 2005. A peak-to-peak spectral shift variation of up to 2.3 nm is detected in CASI. Concerning atmospheric products and surface reflectance retrievals, an extensive validation is performed using ground-based measurements. A good correlation between ground measurements and CASI-derived AOT and CWV is found, with a Pearson correlation coefficient r 2 up to 0.71 and 0.74, respectively. The subsequent surface reflectance retrievals also hold a good correspondence with ground-based measurements. © 2006 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The Fennec climate programme aims to improve understanding of the Saharan climate system through a synergy of observations and modelling. We present a description of the Fennec airborne observations during 2011 and 2012 over the remote Sahara (Mauritania and Mali) and the advances in the understanding of mineral dust and boundary layer processes they have provided. Aircraft instrumentation aboard the UK FAAM BAe146 and French SAFIRE (Service des Avions Français Instrumentés pour la Recherche en Environnement) Falcon 20 is described, with specific focus on instrumentation specially developed for and relevant to Saharan meteorology and dust. Flight locations, aims and associated meteorology are described. Examples and applications of aircraft measurements from the Fennec flights are presented, highlighting new scientific results delivered using a synergy of different instruments and aircraft. These include (1) the first airborne measurement of dust particles sizes of up to 300 microns and associated dust fluxes in the Saharan atmospheric boundary layer (SABL), (2) dust uplift from the breakdown of the nocturnal low-level jet before becoming visible in SEVIRI (Spinning Enhanced Visible Infra-Red Imager) satellite imagery, (3) vertical profiles of the unique vertical structure of turbulent fluxes in the SABL, (4) in situ observations of processes in SABL clouds showing dust acting as cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) and ice nuclei (IN) at −15 °C, (5) dual-aircraft observations of the SABL dynamics, thermodynamics and composition in the Saharan heat low region (SHL), (6) airborne observations of a dust storm associated with a cold pool (haboob) issued from deep convection over the Atlas Mountains, (7) the first airborne chemical composition measurements of dust in the SHL region with differing composition, sources (determined using Lagrangian backward trajectory calculations) and absorption properties between 2011 and 2012, (8) coincident ozone and dust surface area measurements suggest coarser particles provide a route for ozone depletion, (9) discrepancies between airborne coarse-mode size distributions and AERONET (AERosol Robotic NETwork) sunphotometer retrievals under light dust loadings. These results provide insights into boundary layer and dust processes in the SHL region – a region of substantial global climatic importance.

In this paper we present the results obtained from ground-based measurements using a CIMEL sunphotometer during selected clear days corresponding to the winter and summer periods of 2002 in Valencia, an urban coastal Mediterranean site. From the direct solar extinction data the spectral aerosol optical depth (AOD) has been retrieved. This spectral AOD has been used to obtain the size distribution function from the King inversion algorithm. The results show the great dependence of the optical aerosol characteristics on the dominant winds in this area. This location is subject to winds which have either a land or Mediterranean origin which frequently mask the aerosols coming from the Atlantic or north Africa, respectively.

Continuous in situ measurements of aerosol optical properties were conducted from 29 June to 29 July 2012 in Granada (Spain) with a seven-wavelength Aethalometer, a Multi-Angle Absorption Photometer, and a three-wavelength integrating nephelometer. The aim of this work is to describe a methodology to obtain the absorption coefficients (babs) for the different Aethalometer wavelengths. In this way, data have been compensated using algorithms which best estimate the compensation factors needed. Two empirical factors are used to infer the absorption coefficients from the Aethalometer measurements: C – the parameter describing the enhancement of absorption by particles in the filter matrix due to multiple scattering of light in the filter matrix – and f, the parameter compensating for non-linear loading effects in the filter matrix. Spectral dependence of f found in this study is not very strong. Values for the campaign lie in the range from 1.15 at 370 nm to 1.11 at 950 nm. Wavelength dependence in C proves to be more important, and also more difficult to calculate. The values obtained span from 3.42 at 370 nm to 4.59 at 950 nm. Furthermore, the temporal evolution of the Ångström exponent of absorption (αabs) and the single-scattering albedo (ω0) is presented. On average αabs is around 1.1 ± 0.3, and ω0 is 0.78 ± 0.08 and 0.74 ± 0.09 at 370 and 950 nm, respectively. These are typical values for sites with a predominance of absorbing particles, and the urban measurement site in this study is such. The babs average values are of 16 ± 10 Mm−1 (at 370 nm) and 5 ± 3 Mm−1 (at 950 nm), respectively. Finally, differences between workdays and Sundays have been further analysed, obtaining higher babs and lower ω0 during the workdays than on Sundays as a consequence of the diesel traffic influence., Atmospheric Measurement Techniques, 7 (8), ISSN:1867-1381, ISSN:1867-8548

The most intense wildfire experienced in Eastern Spain since 2004 happened in Valencia during summer 2012. Although the fire was mostly active during days 29–30 June, a longer temporal period (from 24 June to 4 July) was selected for this analysis. Column-integrated, vertical resolved and surface aerosol observations were performed continuously at the Burjassot station throughout the studied period. The aerosol optical depth at 500 nm shows values larger than 2 for the most intense part of the wildfire and an extremely high maximum of 8 was detected on 29 June. The simultaneous increase of the Ångström exponent was also observed, indicating the important contribution of small particles in the smoke plume. An extraordinary increase in the particle concentration near the ground was observed and hence the measured scattering coefficient was drastically enhanced. The scattering coefficient and the PM2.5 level maxima reached the unusually high values of 2100 Mm−1 and 160 μg m−3, respectively. These records represent an enhancement factor of 26 and 7 with respect to the climatological averages found in this station during June and July. The surface maxima were observed with 1-day lag from the maximum AOD, and this fact is linked with the mixing layer amplitude and the sedimentation of smoke particles. The aerosol microphysical parameters and optical properties were determined for the whole period by combination of an inversion procedure and the Mie Theory. The smoke particles enhanced drastically the volume concentration of the fine mode with a maximum of 0.4 μm3 μm−2, which is 10 times higher than the climatological summer background in this site. The simultaneous presence of dust and smoke particles at different altitudes was observed and hence the coarse mode was also significant during the most intense period of the wildfire episode. Therefore the aerosol single scattering albedo and the asymmetry parameter obtained during the smoke cases display high variability which is partially modulated by the volume of coarse particles. The smoke episode highly contributed to increase the load of particles remaining in the atmosphere after the event, especially in the fine mode, although similar aerosol microphysical and optical properties were observed before and after the event. In addition, the particle concentration observed at surface level due to the wildfire episode largely contributes to exceed the EU annual limits for the particulate matter in the studied region.

An analysis is made of the UV Index (UVI) obtained from the ultraviolet erythemal solar radiation (UVER) data measured by the Spanish UVB Radiometric Network between the years 2000 and 2009. Previously, the daily UVI has been evaluated using two different criteria: (a) the value corresponding to solar noon; and (b) the daily maximum value. The mean percentage of agreement is 92% if we consider the cases for which the difference is zero or one UVI unit. These results are similar to those obtained in a previous work where only 2 years were analyzed. In all the stations the UVI reaches very high values (8-10) in spring-summer, and the very high and extreme (≥ 11) UVI values are more dependent on the continental effect than on the latitude effect. From the UVI values it is possible to classify the stations into four groups: Coastal stations, Continental stations (more than 200 km from the coast), Southern stations (Coastal stations but with similar values of UVI as the Continental ones due to their low latitude) and Canary Islands stations (1400 km southwest from the Iberian Peninsula thus lower latitude). The monthly mean maximum of UVI is reached in July due to the annual evolution of the total ozone column. This value corresponds, for a skin phototype II, to three times the minimal erythemal dose (MED) in an hour in a Coastal station, 3.5 MEDs in an hour measured in a Continental or Southern station and up five MEDs in an hour in the Izana station (Canary Islands). The cumulative dose on a horizontal plane over an average year has been calculated for each station. More than 40% of the annual dose is received in summer, about 35% in spring, more than 11% in autumn and less than 10% in winter except for the stations in the Canary Islands where the difference between seasons is less significant.

Daily average total ozone Microtops measurements obtained during several campaigns conducted from 2001 to 2011 at latitudes from 31 to 68N and in different seasons are compared with satellite observations. The Microtops ozone is derived using different wavelength combinations (Channel I, 305.5/312.5. nm; Channel II, 312.5/320. nm; and Channel III, 305.5/312.5/320. nm). Satellite data from TOMS, OMI, GOME, and GOME-2 are used in the comparison. The three Microtops channels show a high correlation with the satellite retrievals. Channel I shows the best results and produces a mean bias deviation (MBD) less than 2.14% with respect to TOMS, OMI and GOME. The MBD increases to 3% in the comparison against GOME-2, due to the small number of available data. In addition, the total ozone content provided by Channel I displays the more stable behavior during the ten-year period. The Channel III total ozone shows MBD values smaller than those observed for Channel I. However the Channels II and III present a larger variability and show a larger spread of the data. Consequently, Channel I appears as the best option for long term measurements with Microtops. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.

The Ground-based and Airborne Measurements of the Aerosol Radiative Forcing (GAMARF) campaign was carried out during spring 2008 in Lampedusa Island (Central Mediterranean). Several flights were performed by an instrumented ultralight in different atmospheric conditions. In situ measurements of aerosol size distribution vertical profiles were used together with ground-based measurements of aerosol optical depth and ÅAngström exponent to retrieve simultaneously profiles of the aerosol radiative properties and its effective refractive index. The retrieved backscattering and extinction profiles are in agreement with independent Lidar measurements, within the estimated uncertainties. This analysis suggests that in situ measurements of aerosol distribution can be used quantitatively for the determination of the aerosol optical and radiative properties. © 2013 AIP Publishing LLC.

The European Skynet Radiometers network (EuroSkyRad or ESR) has been recently established as a research network of European Prede POM sun – sky radiometers. Moreover, ESR is federated with SKYNET (SKYrad NETwork), an international network mostly present in East Asia. In contrast to SKYNET, the European network also integrates users of the Cimel CE318 sunphotometer. Keeping instrumental duality in mind, a set of open source algorithms has been developed consisting of two modules for: (1) the retrieval of direct sun products from the sun extinction measurements; and (2) the inversion of the sky radiance to derive aerosol optical properties. In this study we evaluate the ESR direct sun products (spectral aerosol optical depth, Angström wavelength exponent and columnar content of water vapour) in comparison with the AERosol RObotic NETwork (AERONET) products. Specifically, we have applied the ESR algorithm to a Cimel CE318 and Prede POM01L simultaneously for a 4 yr database measured at the Burjassot site (Valencia, Spain), and compared the resultant products with the AERONET direct sun retrievals obtained with the same Cimel CE318 instrument. The comparison show that aerosol optical depth differences are mostly within the nominal uncertainty of 0.003 for a standard calibration instrument, and fall within the nominal AERONET uncertainty of 0.01–0.02 for a field instrument. Therefore, we present an open source code that can be used for both radiometers and whose results are comparable to those of AERONET and SKYNET.

Although routinely monitored by ground based air quality networks, the particulate matter distribution could be eventually better described with remote sensing techniques. However, valid relationships between ground level and columnar ground based quantities should be known beforehand. In this study we have performed a comparison between particulate matter measurements at ground level at different cut sizes (10, 2.5 and 1.0 mm), and the aerosol optical depth obtained by means of a ground based sunphotometer during a multiinstrumental field campaign held in El Arenosillo (Huelva, Spain) from 28 June to 4 July 2006. All the PM fractions were very well correlated with AOD with correlation coefficients that ranged from 0.71 to 0.81 for PM10, PM2.5 and PM1. Furthermore, the influence of the mixing layer height in the correlations was explored. The improvement in the correlation when the vertical distribution is taken into account was significant for days with a homogeneous mixing layer. Moreover, the chemical analysis of the individual size fractions allowed us to study the origin of the particulate matter. Secondary components were the most abundant and also well correlated in the three size fractions; but for PM10 fraction, chemical species related to marine origin were best correlated. Finally, we obtained a relationship between MODIS L3 AOD from collection 5.1 and the three PM cut sizes. In spite of being a relatively clean environment, all the techniques were able to capture similar day to day variations during this field campaign.

Between 2000 and 2008, columnar optical and radiative properties were measured at the Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML), UK (50° 21.95'N, 4° 8.85'W) using an automatic Prede POM01L sun-sky photometer. The database was analyzed for aerosol optical properties using the SKYRAD radiative inversion algorithm and calibrated using the in situ SKYIL calibration method. Retrievals include aerosol optical depth, ångström wavelength exponent, aerosol volume distribution, refractive index and single scattering albedo. The results show that the Plymouth site is characterized by low values of aerosol optical depth with low variability (0.18 ± 0.08 at 500 nm) and a mean annual ångström exponent of 1.03 ± 0.21. The annual mean of the single scattering albedo is 0.97, indicative of non-absorbing aerosols. The aerosol properties were classified in terms of air mass back trajectories: the area is mainly affected by Atlantic air masses and the dominant aerosol type is a mixture of maritime particles, present in low burdens with variable size. The maritime air masses were defined by annual mean values for the AOD (at 500 nm) of 0.13-0.14 and a wavelength exponent of 0.96-1.03. Episodic anthropogenic and mineral dust intrusions occasionally occur, but they are sporadic and dilute (AOD at 500 nm about 0.20). Tropical continental air masses were characterized by the highest AOD at 500 nm (0.34) and the lowest wavelength exponent (0.83), although they were the least represented in the analysis. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.

A Microtops II "ozone monitor" with UV channels centered at 305.5, 312.5, and 320 nm has been used routinely in six experimental campaigns carried out in several geographic locations and seasons, covering latitudes from 35 to 68° N during the last ten years (2001–2011). The total ozone content is retrieved by Microtops II by using different combinations (Channel I, 305.5/312.5 nm; Channel II, 312.5/320 nm; and Channel III, 305.5/312.5/320 nm) of the signals at the three ultraviolet wavelengths. The long-term performance of the total ozone content determination has been studied taking into account the sensitivities to the calibration, airmass, temperature and aerosols. When a calibration was used and the airmass limit was fixed to 3, the root mean square deviations of the relative differences produced by Microtops II with respect to several Brewers are 0.9, 2, and 2% respectively for the Channel I, Channel II, and Channel III retrieval. The performance of the Microtops retrieval has been stable during the last ten years. Channel I represents the best option to determine the instantaneous total ozone content. Channels II and III values appear weakly sensitive to temperature, ozone content, and aerosols. Channel II is more stable than Channel I for airmasses larger than 2.6.
