Abstract

This study of the thermal behaviour of two glass formers showed that rofecoxib has a good ability to vitrify while celecoxib displays a moderate glass forming ability. On the other hand, celecoxib forms an instable glass while rofecoxib displays moderate glass stability. The α-relaxation of the two amorphous drugs was studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermally stimulated depolarization currents (TSDC). The values of the dynamic fragility obtained by the two techniques are in good mutual agreement and suggest that both drugs are moderately fragile glass formers. These values are however considerably lower than those obtained by dielectric relaxation spectroscopy (DRS) and published in the literature. In the present work we will compare the values of the dynamic fragility obtained by TSDC and DRS for a set of ~30 glass-forming liquids, in order to evaluate their relative suitability for the determination of the m-index. The observed differences are discussed and interpreted. Finally, secondary mobility modes were detected by TSDC in both celecoxib and rofecoxib. The kinetic parameters are identical in both cases and similar to those found by DRS for the slow-b relaxation of celecoxib. These secondary relaxations, that are precursors of the main relaxation on its lower temperature side, are believed to be Johari-Goldstein relaxations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

28. Pressure and temperature dependences of the dynamics of glass formers studied by broad-band dielectric spectroscopy

Abstract

The pressure and temperature behaviours of the structural relaxation time in glass-forming systems can be well described by a new equation, based on the Adam-Gibbs model, where the configurational entropy has been written ill terms of the excess heat capacity and the molar thermal expansion, All experimental check of this equation was performed on the dynamics of an epoxy compound, investigated by wide-band dielectric spectroscopy (10(-2-) 10(10) Hz). Six different sets of relaxation data, corresponding to two different conditions, were analysed: firstly, isobaric (atmospheric pressure and 95.5 MPa) with various temperatures down to the supercooled and glassy phases and. secondly. isothermal (at four different temperatures) with changing pressure in the range 0.1-270 MPa. Moreover. the thermal expansion was independently determined from data on the pressure and temperature variations of the volume of the material. From this analysis. the pressure-extended Adam-Gibbs model resulted, which is so suitable for describing the two-dimensional surface tau(T. P) over the A hole investigated range of temperatures and pressures that a master curve can be obtained from all the relaxation times if plotted versus a variable related to the configurational entropy directly derived from thermodynamic data.

Abstract

Inclusion complexes (ICs) composedof α-cyclodextrin (α-CD)and poly(d,l-lactic acid) (PDLLA), with 10/24 (IC1)and 15/46 (IC2) (% w/w) of PDLLA incorporated/initial PDLLA weightpercentage, were prepared and characterized mainly by dielectric relaxationspectroscopy (DRS). Bulk PDLLA was also analyzed for comparison. DRSwas revealed to be a suitable tool to distinguish the dynamical responseof the PDLLA regions constrained in between α-CD channels fromthe fraction incorporated inside channels. While the cooperative α-processundergoes a dramatic depletion shifting to higher temperatures (∼4.5°C) for the PDLLA interchannels portion, it is suppressed forPDLLA chains inside pores. It was demonstrated that the broad secondaryrelaxation of bulk PDLLA is the Johari–Goldstein process (βJG-process). The detection of its analogue in the ICs at higherfrequencies, to a greater extent in IC1, is interpreted as a trueconfinement effect where the dimensions of the α-CD channelsinterfere with the length scale of the βJG-process.The limit predicted in the framework of the coupling model, wherethe α-relaxation transforms in the βJG-process,seems to be reached in the ICs. 44. Molecular Mobility of Amorphous S-Flurbiprofen: A Dielectric Relaxation Spectroscopy Approach

Abstract

Amorphous S-flurbiprofen was obtained by the melt quench/cooling method. Dielectric measurements performed in the isochronal mode, conventional and temperature modulated differential scanning calorimetry (TMDSC) studies showed a glass transition, recrystallization, and melting. The different parameters characterizing the complex molecular dynamics of amorphous S-flurbiprofen that can have influence on crystallization and stability were comprehensively characterized by dielectric relaxation spectroscopy experiments (isothermal mode) covering a wide temperature (183 to 408 K) and frequency range (10–1to 106Hz): width of the α-relaxation (βKWW), temperature dependence of α-relaxation times (τα), fragility index (m), relation of the α-relaxation with the β-secondary relaxation, and the breakdown of the Debye–Stokes–Einstein (DSE) relationship between the structural relaxation time and dc-conductivity (σdc) at deep undercooling close to Tg. The β-relaxation, observed in the glassy as well as in the supercooled state was identified as the genuine Johari–Goldstein process, attributed to localized motions and regarded as the precursor of the α-relaxation as suggested in the coupling model. A separation of about 6 decades between the α- and β-relaxation was observed at Tg; this decoupling decreased on increasing temperature, and both processes merged at Tαβ= 295 K. The temperature dependence of the α-relaxation time, τα, was described by two Vogel–Fulcher–Tammann–Hesse equations, which intercept at a crossover temperature, TB= 290 K, close to the splitting temperature between the α- and β-relaxation. From the low temperature VFTH equation, a TgDRS= 265.2 was estimated (at τα=100 s) in good agreement with the calorimetric value (Tg,onset,TMDSC= 265.6 K), and a fragility or steepness index m= 113 was calculated allowing to classify S-flurbiprofen as a fragile glass former. The α-relaxation spectra were found to be characterized by a relatively large degree of nonexponentiality (βKWW= 0.52). A breakdown of the DSE log10σdc– log10τ relation was observed revealing an enhancement of translational ionic motions in comparison with the orientational molecular motions as the glass transition temperature Tgis approached from above.
