Abstract

Summary: This book is a collection of all papers published in the Special Issue "Coastal Vulnerability and Mitigation Strategies: From Monitoring to Applied Research". The main focus is to provide the state-of-the-art and recent research updates on sustainable management strategies for protecting vulnerable coastal areas. Based on 28 contributions from authors representing 17 different countries (Australia, China, Ecuador, Germany, Greece, India, Italy, Mexico, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, Spain, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, United Arab Emirates, UK, USA), an ensemble of interdisciplinary articles has been collected, emphasizing the importance of tackling technical and scientific problems at different scales and from different point of views.

Abstract

This study examines the impact of the spacing parameter on the efficacy of an array of hybrid modules functioning as both floating breakwaters and wave energy converters. The dual functionality is ensured by the ability of the device to autoadjust its submergence. The behavior of multiple 1:40 scaled modules was tested in the wave tank of the University of Campania "Luigi Vanvitelli". The objective was to assess the hydraulic performance of the array by analyzing transmission, reflection, and dissipation coefficients under different wave conditions. Specifically, the transmission coefficient ranges between 0.85 and 0.51, depending on the relative wavelength and wave steepness, while the reflection and dissipation coefficients vary, respectively, between 0.70–0.20 and 0.55–0.3. Abstract

The main purpose of this paper is the investigation of the feasibility of a novel hybrid module specifically designed for the Mediterranean Sea. This module is intended to work as an offshore floating breakwater in severe sea states, and alternatively as a wave energy converter in the more frequent mild sea states, depending on its level of submergence. An experimental campaign on a 1:10 module has been carried out in the wave tank of the University of Campania. The dynamic response of the device, as well as its hydraulic performances, was investigated under various wave conditions. The experimental results highlight the possibility of realizing and installing hybrid structures combining energy conversion and wave attenuation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The present paper describes the experiences gained from the design methodology and operation of a 3D physical modelexperiment aimed to investigate the dynamic behaviour of a spar buoy floating offshore wind turbine. The physical model consists in a Froude-scaled NREL 5MW reference wind turbine (RWT) supported on the OC3-Hywind floating platform. Experimental tests have been performed at Danish Hydraulic Institute (DHI) offshore wave basin within the European Union-Hydralab+ Initiative, in April 2019. The floating wind turbine model has been subjected to a combination of regular and irregular wave attacks and different wind loads. Measurements of displacements, rotations, accelerations, forces response of the floating model and at the mooring lines have been carried out. First, free decay tests have been analysed to obtain the natural frequency and the modal damping ratios of each degree of freedom governing the offshore. Then, the results concerning regular waves, with orthogonal incidence to the structure, are presented. The results show that most of longitudinal dynamic response occurs at the wave frequency and most of lateral dynamic response occurs at rigid-body frequencies.
