1. Neural Projected Quantum Dynamics: a systematic study

Abstract

We address the challenge of simulating unitary quantum dynamics in large systems using Neural Quantum States, focusing on overcoming the computational instabilities and high cost of existing methods. This work offers a comprehensive formalization of the projected time-dependent Variational Monte Carlo (p-tVMC) method by thoroughly analyzing its two essential components: stochastic infidelity minimization and discretization of the unitary evolution. We investigate neural infidelity minimization using natural gradient descent strategies, identifying the most stable stochastic estimators and introducing adaptive regularization strategies that eliminate the need for manual adjustment of the hyperparameter along the dynamics. We formalize the specific requirements that p-tVMC imposes on discretization schemes for them to be efficient, and introduce four high-order integration schemes combining Taylor expansions, Pad\'e approximants, and Trotter splitting to enhance accuracy and scalability. We benchmark our adaptive methods against a 2D Ising quench, matching state of the art techniques without manual tuning of hyperparameters. 2. Effectiveness of University-Provided Individual Counselling for Healthcare Students: A Systematic Review

Abstract

Medical, nursing, and other healthcare students undergo specific stressors. Their mental health represents a priority for universities and the entire community. This review aimed to gather evidence about the effectiveness of individual psychological counselling offered by universities to healthcare students. A systematic review was conducted by searching PubMed, Scopus, and APA PsycInfo. A total of 1906 records were identified. The selection resulted in six studies published between 1994 and 2014. The most common design was quasi-experimental. Half focused on medical students and often interventions comprised other elements. Outcomes were related to mental health issues, academic performance, or both. The results showed statistically significant improvements, with some exceptions. The present review highlighted some specific characteristics that must be considered in order to fill the existing gap in this field, such as widening the range of studied outcomes, improving the description of the intervention, and planning randomized controlled trials (RCT) to compare strategies.

Abstract

Pharmaceutical patents play an important role by protecting the innovation from copies but also drive researchers to innovate, create new products, and promote disruptive innovations focusing on collective health. The study of patent management usually refers to an exhaustive manual search. This happens, because patent documents are complex with a lot of details regarding the claims and methodology/results explanation of the invention. To mitigate the manual search, we proposed PATopics, a framework specially designed to extract relevant information for Pharmaceutical patents. PATopics is composed of four building blocks that extract textual information from the patents, build relevant topics that are capable of summarizing the patents, correlate these topics with useful patent characteristics and then, summarize the information in a friendly web interface to final users. The general contributions of PATopics are its ability to centralize patents and to manage patents into groups based on their similarities. We extensively analyzed the framework using 4,832 pharmaceutical patents concerning 809 molecules patented by 478 companies. In our analysis, we evaluate the use of the framework considering the demands of three user profiles -- researchers, chemists, and companies. We also designed four real-world use cases to evaluate the framework's applicability. Abstract

Unifying quantum theory and general relativity is the holy grail of contemporary physics. Nonetheless, the lack of experimental evidence driving this process led to a plethora of mathematical models with a substantial impossibility of discriminating among them or even establishing if gravity really needs to be quantized or if, vice versa, quantum mechanics must be "gravitized" at some scale. Recently, it has been proposed that the observation of the generation of entanglement by gravitational interaction, could represent a breakthrough demonstrating the quantum nature of gravity. A few experimental proposals have been advanced in this sense, but the extreme technological requirements (e.g., the need for free-falling gravitationally-interacting masses in a quantum superposition state) make their implementation still far ahead. Here we present a feasibility study for a table-top nanodiamond-based interferometer eventually enabling easier and less resource-demanding quantum gravity tests. With respect to the aforementioned proposals, by relying on quantum superpositions of steady massive (mesoscopic) objects our interferometer may allow exploiting just small-range electromagnetic fields (much easier to implement and control) and, at the same time, the re-utilization of the massive quantum probes exploited, inevitably lost in free-falling interferometric schemes., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

In the context of the Damage Mechanics Challenge, we adopt a phase-field model of brittle fracture to blindly predict the behavior up to failure of a notched three-point-bending specimen loaded under mixed-mode conditions. The beam is additively manufactured using a geo-architected gypsum based on the combination of bassanite and a water-based binder. The calibration of the material parameters involved in the model is based on a set of available independent experimental tests and on a two-stage procedure. In the first stage an estimate of most of the elastic parameters is obtained, whereas the remaining parameters are optimized in the second stage so as to minimize the discrepancy between the numerical predictions and a set of experimental results on notched three-point-bending beams. The good agreement between numerical predictions and experimental results in terms of load-displacement curves and crack paths demonstrates the predictive ability of the model and the reliability of the calibration procedure.

11. Efficiency of neural quantum states in light of the quantum geometric tensor

Abstract

Neural quantum state (NQS) ans\"atze have shown promise in variational Monte Carlo algorithms by their theoretical capability of representing any quantum state. However, the reason behind the practical improvement in their performance with an increase in the number of parameters is not fully understood. In this work, we systematically study the efficiency of a shallow neural network to represent the ground states in different phases of the spin-1 bilinear-biquadratic chain, as the number of parameters increases. We train our ansatz by a supervised learning procedure, minimizing the infidelity w.r.t. the exact ground state. We observe that the accuracy of our ansatz improves with the network width in most cases, and eventually saturates. We demonstrate that this can be explained by looking at the spectrum of the quantum geometric tensor (QGT), particularly its rank. By introducing an appropriate indicator, we establish that the QGT rank provides a useful diagnostic for the practical representation power of an NQS ansatz.

12. Interactional Practices to Manage Epistemic Stances in Online Searches during a Computer-Mediated Conversation-for-Learning

Abstract

Despite rising interests in the manifestations of second language (L2) interactional competence (IC) in online language learning activities (e.g., Balaman & Sert, 2017a, 2017b), participants' interactional practices for managing epistemic stances in online searches remains largely unexplored. This paper examines how an intermediate-level learner of English jointly managed epistemics with a tutor in a text-and-voice teleconference session designed as a conversation-for-learning. The analysis focuses on web search sequences occasioned by emergent epistemic asymmetries in the ongoing talk, and how the participants leveraged resources to negotiate knowledge positions and display affiliation during online searches. Findings reveal that epistemic stance management is a prominent aspect of the IC involved in online search sequences. For example, during an online search, the tutee demonstrates his IC by citing and attributing responsibility to the source in response to epistemic primacy challenges. In the process, he also utilised affiliative resources such as laughter and a term of endearment to delicately manage disaffiliation. By focusing on the management of epistemic stances during online searches, this study informs the use of online searches in L2 learning activities to foster opportunities to perform stance-taking practices as part of the learner's IC.

Abstract

We propose a variational scheme to represent composite quantum systems using multiple parameterized functions of varying accuracies on both classical and quantum hardware. The approach follows the variational principle over the entire system, and is naturally suited for scenarios where an accurate description is only needed in a smaller subspace. We show how to include quantum devices as high-accuracy solvers on these correlated degrees of freedom, while handling the remaining contributions with a classical device. Abstract

Increasing longevity poses major challenges for society and older persons, highlighting the importance of identifying factors that promote healthy aging and the maintenance of functional abilities. Among these factors, psychological well-being – particularly purpose in life – is crucial. Purpose in life (PL) is associated with a positive worldview and emotional well-being. The literature suggests that the perception of higher PL can act as a protective factor against conditions such as stress and depression, motivating older individuals to take better care of their physical and mental health. Furthermore, involvement in sports, especially among masters’ athletes, not only promotes physical health but also strengthens a sense of community and purpose. For these individuals, sport is not just a form of physical exercise, but a continuous source of challenges, social connection, and inspiration. Thus, discovering and cultivating purpose in older age not only improves individual quality of life, but also inspires others to adopt active and meaningful lifestyles, challenging conventional expectations of aging.

Abstract

Abstract Over the past three decades, there has been increasing interest in miniaturized percutaneous nephrolithotomy (mPCNL) techniques featuring smaller tracts as they offer potential solutions to mitigate complications associated with standard PCNL (sPCNL). However, despite this growing acceptance and recognition of its benefits, unresolved controversies and acknowledged limitations continue to impede widespread adoption due to a lack of consensus on optimal perioperative management strategies and procedural tips and tricks. In response to these challenges, an international panel comprising experts from the International Alliance of Urolithiasis (IAU) took on the task of compiling an expert consensus document on mPCNL procedures aimed at providing urologists with a comprehensive clinical framework for practice. This endeavor involved conducting a systematic literature review to identify research gaps (RGs), which formed the foundation for developing a structured questionnaire survey. Subsequently, a two-round modified Delphi survey was implemented, culminating in a group meeting to generate final evidence-based comments. All 64 experts completed the second-round survey, resulting in a response rate of 100.0%. Fifty-eight key questions were raised focusing on mPCNLs within 4 main domains, including general information (13 questions), preoperative work-up (13 questions), procedural tips and tricks (19 questions), and postoperative evaluation and follow-up (13 questions). Additionally, 9 questions evaluated the experts’ experience with PCNLs. Consensus was reached on 30 questions after the second-round survey, while professional statements for the remaining 28 key questions were provided after discussion in an online panel meeting. mPCNL, characterized by a tract smaller than 18 Fr and an innovative lithotripsy technique, has firmly established itself as a viable and effective approach for managing upper urinary tract stones in both adults and pediatrics. It offers several advantages over sPCNL including reduced bleeding, fewer requirements for nephrostomy tubes, decreased pain, and shorter hospital stays. The series of detailed techniques presented here serve as a comprehensive guide for urologists, aiming to improve their procedural understanding and optimize patient outcomes.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: Delirium is one of the most frequent syndromes among elderly patients admitted to emergency units and, despite presenting well-established symptoms and signs, there are still diagnostic failures. Thus, the aim of the study was to adapt the Abbreviated Mental Test (AMT) as a screening tool for delirium in elderly adults admitted to an emergency department. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted at the emergency department of a university hospital in Brasília, Brazil between April and June, 2014. We evaluated 90 patients of both sexes, aged 60 years or older. The Confusion Assessment Method (CAM) Instrument was considered the gold standard for diagnosing delirium. The complete translated AMT, administered in four different culturally adapted models, as well as condensed models, were compared to the CAM receiver operating characteristics curve (significance < 0.05; H0: AUC = 0.5). Inter-rater agreement was evaluated with the kappa test, using SPSS version 22.0.0.0. RESULTS: The prevalence of delirium was 25.6%. The best of the four AMT models presented sensitivity and specificity of 78.3% and 85.1%, respectively, with good inter-rater reproducibility (Kappa = 0.793). The best condensed model included four questions, with sensitivity and specificity of 82.6% and 82.1%, respectively, and a kappa of 0.746. CONCLUSIONS: Compared to the gold standard, the adapted AMT (complete or condensed) was adequate as an alternative for quick delirium screening in elderly patients admitted to an emergency department, especially for unaccompanied patients with no prior cognitive deficit.

Abstract

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to identify the factors associated with the physical activity of elderly assisted at the basic health units (BHU) of the city of Matelândia, Paraná, Brazil. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study, in which 343 elderly users of the BHU of this city were surveyed. A socio-demographic questionnaire, the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), and the questionnaire of barriers to physical activity practice were used. RESULTS: In relation to the level of physical activity, 88.9% of the elderlies were classified as active/very active. Higher level of physical activity was significantly associated with the amount of medication used (p = 0.024), reason to go to BHU (p = 0.037), and indication of physical activity by UBS (p = 0.040). Lack of energy (p = 0.048) was a more frequent and significant barrier for the active/very active elderly. CONCLUSION: There is a large number of active/very active elderly users of the BHU of Matelândia, Paraná, Brazil, and this was associated with lower age, lower medication use, going to BHU to withdraw medication/others and indication of physical activity by the BHU. For those who do not fit into these levels, lack of financial resources and insufficiently safe environment are the most common barriers to physical activity.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Endoscopic Combined Intrarenal Surgery (ECIRS) has emerged as a promising technique for the management of large and complex kidney stones, potentially offering advantages over traditional Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL). This study aims to evaluate best practices, outcomes, and future perspectives associated with ECIRS. Materials and Methods: A comprehensive PubMed search was conducted from 2008 to 2024, using MESH terms and the following key words: "ECIRS" and "Endoscopic Combined Intrarenal Surgery" The search yielded 157 articles, including retrospective cohort studies, two randomized controlled trials (RCTs), and four meta-analyses comparing ECIRS with PCNL. Most important findings were summarized regarding indications, patient positioning, kidney access, tract size, surgical outcomes, and complications. Results: ECIRS demonstrated higher stone-free rate, lower complication rate, and a reduced need for multiple procedures compared to traditional PCNL. Additionally, ECIRS has the potential to integrate new technologies to further enhance outcomes. Conclusion: ECIRS demonstrates significant advantages in the management of large kidney stones. Future research should focus on well-designed RCTs to provide robust evidence of its efficacy, safety, and cost-effectiveness, potentially establishing ECIRS as the first option treatment for complex kidney stones.

24. Origin of sandy substrates controlling the distribution of open vegetation ecosystems in Amazonia

Abstract

Abstract Understanding the role of open vegetation, particularly in white-sand ecosystems (WSE) and savannas, is crucial for elucidating their role in Amazonian biotic diversification. These ecosystems predominantly develop on sandy terrains, suggesting that the geological substrate significantly influences the vegetation upon it. Therefore, the interaction between landscape changes and biotic diversification is closely tied to the dynamics and resilience of these sandy substrates. Current WSE and savannas in lowland Amazonia colonized fluvial sediments deposited during the past 120 ka, with marked synchronicity over the last 23 ka, as shown by optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) and radiocarbon ages of such sandy substrates. In contrast, sandy substrates supporting open vegetation in highland areas, unsuitable for Quaternary sand accumulation, would have persisted beyond the Quaternary, as ancient sedimentary rocks in these areas are prone to developing sandy soils. The current distribution of open vegetation ecosystems in lowland Amazonia is coupled with the deposition and erosion of sandy sediments by Quaternary fluvial systems, while weathering sandy substrates in highland areas serve as long-term and resilient refugia beyond the Quaternary. The contrasting spatiotemporal dynamics of landscape changes in lowland and highland areas has implications for biodiversification or extinction events leading to current biogeography patterns in Amazonia.

Abstract

Abstract We describe the geographical variation in tree species composition across Amazonian forests and show how environmental conditions are associated with species turnover. Our analyses are based on 2023 forest inventory plots (1 ha) that provide abundance data for a total of 5188 tree species. Within-plot species composition reflected both local environmental conditions (especially soil nutrients and hydrology) and geographical regions. A broader-scale view of species turnover was obtained by interpolating the relative tree species abundances over Amazonia into 47,441 0.1-degree grid cells. Two main dimensions of spatial change in tree species composition were identified. The first was a gradient between western Amazonia at the Andean forelands (with young geology and relatively nutrient-rich soils) and central–eastern Amazonia associated with the Guiana and Brazilian Shields (with more ancient geology and poor soils). The second gradient was between the wet forests of the northwest and the drier forests in southern Amazonia. Isolines linking cells of similar composition crossed major Amazonian rivers, suggesting that tree species distributions are not limited by rivers. Even though some areas of relatively sharp species turnover were identified, mostly the tree species composition changed gradually over large extents, which does not support delimiting clear discrete biogeographic regions within Amazonia.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate purpose in life among community-dwelling older adults and its possible associations with physical activity. METHODS: Cross-sectional study conducted with 654 older adult users of primary health care in a city in Southern Brazil. The International Physical Activity Questionnaire and the Purpose in Life Scale were administered to participants. Data analysis was conducted using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Kruskal-Wallis, and Mann-Whitney tests, and Spearman’s correlation coefficients were calculated. Significance was accepted at p < 0.05. RESULTS: The results showed a significant difference in purpose in life according to age (p = 0.003), monthly income (p = 0.001), health perception (p = 0.020), and medication (p = 0.008). There was a very weak correlation between purpose in life and minutes walked per day (r = -0.13). CONCLUSION: We conclude that sociodemographic variables and health conditions (such as health perception and medications used, respectively) can be considered intervening factors in purpose in life among older adults. Engagement in physical activity was not associated with purpose in life.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To correlate anthropometric measurements, lipid profile, cardiorespiratory fitness, and visceral adiposity index (VAI) in sedentary obese older women. METHODS: Twenty-seven insufficiently active and overweight older women were included in this cross-sectional study. We evaluated their anthropometric profile (body weight and stature, body mass index, waist and hip circumferences) and body composition (fat mass, body fat percentage, and musculoskeletal mass). Venous blood samples were analyzed for high and low-density lipoproteins (HDL-c and LDL-c), triglycerides (TG), and the LDL/HDL ratio. Peak oxygen uptake (VO2 peak) was measured using an adapted Bruce test using direct spirometry. We tested data normality and applied Pearson's correlation, assuming a p ≤ 0.05. RESULS: The following correlations were observed: VAI and HDL (r = -0.53); VAI and LDL (r = 0.35); VAI and TG (r = 0.86); VAI and TG/HDL (r = 0.99) and VAI and VO2 peak (r = -0.55), with p < 0.01 for all analyses. CONCLUSION: The findings suggested that VAI may be used as a tool to assess cardiometabolic risk in obese older women. Future studies should evaluate the applicability of VAI as a cardiometabolic risk factor indicator in older adults.

Abstract

Born sustainable firms aim to regenerate the environment and drive positive societal changes since their establishment. Therefore, they need to leverage dynamic capabilities and their micro-foundations to reach their strategic aims. This paper investigates how dynamic capabilities—and their micro-foundations—influence the transition of such firms towards carbon neutrality. It assumes a holistic approach, analyzing the contribution of the firm’s ecosystem to the development of its dynamic capabilities. Finally, the role of green innovations on the path toward carbon neutrality is evaluated. The adopted research method is based on a single longitudinal case study concerning a small organic wine-born sustainable firm implementing a sustainable and circular business model. Our findings clearly show that a firm's dynamic capabilities—belonging to the sensing, seizing, and reconfiguring clusters—play a critical role even in the case of micro and small companies, which are rarely investigated in the extant literature. However, due to the traditional resource poverty characterizing such companies, dynamic capabilities must be rooted in micro-foundations developed through interactions with partners within the firm's ecosystem. At the same time, developed capabilities allow the company to create and exploit a set of green innovations, which, in turn, push forward the net zero goal.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Purpose: to identify risk factors for urinary septic shock in patients who underwent percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL). Materials and Methods: Data from PCNL procedures performed between January 2009 and February 2020 were retrospectively analyzed. The study included all patients over 18 years old with kidney stones larger than 15 mm who underwent PCNL. Patients who underwent mini-PCNL or combined surgeries, such as ureteroscopy or bilateral procedures, were not included in the study. Logistic regression was conducted to determine the risk factors for urinary septic shock within 30 days post-operation in patients who underwent PCNL. Results: Urinary septic shock was observed in 8 out of the 1,424 patients analyzed (0.56%). The presence of comorbidities, evaluated using the Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) (OR 1.46 [CI 95% 1.15-1.86], p=0.01), larger stones (41.0 mm [IQR 30.0-47.5 mm] vs. 24.0 mm [IQR 17.0-35.0 mm], OR 1.03 [CI 95% 1.01-1.06], p=0.04), and a positive preoperative urine culture (OR 8.53 [CI 95% 1.71-42.45], p 2, larger stones (≥ 35 mm), and a positive preoperative urine culture were at even higher risk of urinary septic shock (OR 15.40 [CI 95% 1.77-134.21], p=0.01). Conclusion: Patients with larger stones, positive preoperative urine culture, and a higher CCI are at risk for urinary septic shock after PCNL. These findings are of utmost importance for optimizing the perioperative care of these patients to prevent life-threatening complications.

We present a method to simulate the dynamics of large driven-dissipative many-body open quantum systems using a variational encoding of the Wigner or Husimi-Q quasi-probability distributions. The method relies on Monte-Carlo sampling to maintain a polynomial computational complexity while allowing for several quantities to be estimated efficiently. Abstract

Quantum state reconstruction using Neural Quantum States has been proposed as a viable tool to reduce quantum shot complexity in practical applications, and its advantage over competing techniques has been shown in numerical experiments focusing mainly on the noiseless case. In this work, we numerically investigate the performance of different quantum state reconstruction techniques for mixed states: the finite-temperature Ising model. We show how to systematically reduce the quantum resource requirement of the algorithms by applying variance reduction techniques. Then, we compare the two leading neural quantum state encodings of the state, namely, the Neural Density Operator and the positive operator-valued measurement representation, and illustrate their different performance as the mixedness of the target state varies. We find that certain encodings are more efficient in different regimes of mixedness and point out the need for designing more efficient encodings in terms of both classical and quantum resources., Comment: 7+4 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

In December 2021, the Department for Education (DfE) appointed Ecorys UK to undertake a research project: Future opportunities for education technology in England. The project aimed to provide insights to the future of the EdTech market in England, considering likely developments in digital technology and education policy. This report presents the triangulated findings from work carried out over four months, from December 2021 to March 2022, which comprised of a rapid review of the literature, telephone interviews with policy and industry key stakeholders, workshops with teachers and EdTech sector representatives, and a survey administered with a nationally representative sample of teachers through the Teacher Tapp app. In this report, the authors introduce the background context to the project. They then present the aims and objectives and explain the methods that were deployed, including sampling considerations, data strengths, limitations and caveats. Finally, the authors outline the structure for the remainder of the report.

Abstract. Abdominoscrotal hydrocele (ASH) is a rare clinical finding comprising fluid collection between the layers of the tunica vaginalis, extending from the scrotum to the abdominal cavity. At present, there is no unique or recommended management for ASH, and different surgical treatments have been proposed. Despite an open surgical approach being the most common treatment, the use of laparoscopy has also previously been described. The most common intraoperative complication is devascularization of the testis due to damage to the spermatic cord, with consequent orchiectomy. We present a case of ASH treated with minimally invasive surgery, consisting of a right inguinotomy with puncture of the ASH by positioning a mono-J stent avoiding spermatic cord dissection and the risk of testis devascularization. Sclerotization of the hydrocelic sac with iodopovidone through a mono-J stent was performed with healing from ASH and preservation of testicular vascularization. Two months later, magnetic resonance imaging showed the presence of scar tissue replacing the previous ASH cavity.
