Abstract Water and carbon dioxide each form mesospheric clouds on Mars. At such altitudes (40–100 km), clouds may remain sunlit for part of the night. We describe a previously unreported, visually spectacular season of iridescent, noctilucent clouds visible in early southern autumn from the Curiosity rover's site in Gale crater. Ice nucleation begins near sunset with a narrow range of particle sizes, and the ice aerosols grow and precipitate. The iridescence, visible through three‐color imaging, arises from locally uniform particle sizes resulting from similar growth histories. Colorful fall streaks show the clouds evolving, and a scattering corona shows size uniformity over large areas. The terminator was observed on the clouds, allowing the determination of cloud altitudes and a likely CO2 composition. This is the first observation of particle size variations within individual Martian clouds, allowing a new probe of Martian cloud physics.

We analyzed the main colorimetric characteristics of lights on Mars’ surface from 3139 total spectral irradiances provided by the COMIMART model (J. Space Weather Space Clim. 5, A33, 2015), modifying the parameters of ‘solar zenith angle’ and ‘opacity’, related to the time of day and the amount of dust in the atmosphere of Mars, respectively. Lights on Mars’ surface have chromaticities that are mainly located below the Planckian locus, correlated color temperature in the range of 2333 K–5868 K, and CIE 2017 color fidelity indices above 93. For the 24 samples in the X-Rite ColorChecker® and an extreme dust opacity change from 0.1 to 8.1 in the atmosphere, the average color inconstancy generated by the change in Mars’ light using the chromatic adaptation transform CIECAT16 was about 5 and 8 CIELAB units for solar zenith angles of 0° and 72°, respectively. We propose a method to compute total spectral irradiances on the surface of Mars from a selected value of correlated color temperature in the range of 2333 K–5868 K. This method is analogous to the one currently adopted by the International Commission on Illumination to compute daylight illuminants on the surface of Earth (CIE 015:2018, clause 4.1.2). The average accuracy of 3139 reconstructed total spectral irradiances using the proposed method was 0.9999558 using GFC (J. Opt. Soc. Am. A 14, 1007–1014, 1997) and 0.0009 ΔEu′v′ units, a value just below noticeable chromaticity differences perceptible by human observers at 50% probability. Total spectral irradiances proposed by Barnes for five correlated temperatures agreed with those obtained from the current proposed method: on the average, GFC = 0.9979521 and 0.0023 ΔE′v′ units.

Abstract We quantify the effect of dust accumulation at Jezero crater by means of a Dust Correction Factor (DCF) for the solar radiation measured by the photodiodes of the Radiation and Dust Sensor of the Mars 2020 mission. After one Mars Year, dust on the photodiode surface attenuated 25%–30% of the incoming solar radiation. The DCF did not decrease monotonically; we use a model to reproduce its evolution and to derive dust deposition and lifting rates, showing that dust removal is 9 times larger at Jezero crater than at InSight's location in western Elysium Planitia. The model fit obtained using observed opacities is further improved when fed with dust sedimentation rates simulated by a GCM that considers a particle size distrtibution. Projections show seasonal net dust removal, being encouraging for the long‐term survival of solar‐powered missions to Jezero or similarly active dust lifting regions.

Dust devils are common on Mars and understanding their dynamics is important to gain insights about the meteorology of the planet. Here, the authors show characteristics of a Martian dust devil and its sound from Perseverance rover multi-sensor data combined with modelling.

Clouds at those altitudes on Earth can be noctilucent—night‐shining—when they are illuminated by sunlight while the world below is dark. Noctilucent clouds have been seen on Mars but were not expected around the Curiosity rover site. Curiosity rover images from early southern autumn show clouds that are not only noctilucent, but they are also colorful with a mother‐of‐pearl appearance due to iridescence—such clouds are called nacreous on Earth. Curiosity's environmental data record shows that the clouds have consistently formed near sunset in that season. By looking at the timing of when Mars' shadow falls on the cirrus‐like clouds, we found that they are 50–80 km high and are probably carbon dioxide ice, but there are lower layers of wave‐like clouds that may be water ice. The pastel red, orange, green, and blue fringes of the clouds, which would be easily visible to an astronaut on Mars, help us understand the size of the cloud particles and how they grow and change. Abstract Rovers and landers on Mars have experienced local, regional, and planetary‐scale dust storms. However, in situ documentation of active lifting within storms has remained elusive. Over 5–11 January 2022 (LS 153°–156°), a dust storm passed over the Perseverance rover site. Peak visible optical depth was ∼2, and visibility across the crater was briefly reduced. Pressure amplitudes and temperatures responded to the storm. Winds up to 20 m s−1 rotated around the site before the wind sensor was damaged. The rover imaged 21 dust‐lifting events—gusts and dust devils—in one 25‐min period, and at least three events mobilized sediment near the rover. Rover tracks and drill cuttings were extensively modified, and debris was moved onto the rover deck. Migration of small ripples was seen, but there was no large‐scale change in undisturbed areas. This work presents an overview of observations and initial results from the study of the storm.

Abstract Observations by several cameras on the Perseverance rover showed a 22° scattering halo around the Sun over several hours during northern midsummer (solar longitude 142°). Such a halo has not previously been seen beyond Earth. The halo occurred during the aphelion cloud belt season and the cloudiest time yet observed from the Perseverance site. The halo required crystalline water‐ice cloud particles in the form of hexagonal columns large enough for refraction to be significant, at least 11 μm in diameter and length. From a possible 40–50 km altitude, and over the 3.3 hr duration of the halo, particles could have fallen 3–12 km, causing downward transport of water and dust. Halo‐forming clouds are likely rare due to the high supersaturation of water that is required but may be more common in northern subtropical regions during northern midsummer.

Measurements of ground and near surface atmospheric temperatures at Jezero obtained during 700 sols by the Mars Environmental Dynamics Analyzer (MEDA) characterize the thermal behavior of the near surface Martian atmosphere during a full Martian Year. The seasonal evolution of MEDA measurements is compared with predictions from the Mars Climate Database and the solar irradiance at the surface. Thermal tides observed in the daily cycle of temperatures follow a seasonal cycle with additional variations greater than 2 K on time‐scales of tens of sols. We also observe sol‐to‐sol variations of about 1 K in mean daily air temperatures in autumn and winter with periodicities of 4–7 sols that might be related to baroclinic disturbances that are frequent in those seasons at high latitudes. We examine the evolution of the vertical thermal gradient and temperature fluctuations without finding a seasonal response to irradiance and dust load. We find that the convective boundary layer becomes isothermal and collapses 1 hr before sunset except during northern hemisphere winter, when the collapse occurs closer to sunset, implying a longer duration of the daytime convective instability. Around this period, the rover was located in the delta front in a location of complex topography where we observed stronger thermal gradients and intense daytime air temperature fluctuations. We also find in this place a nighttime event of gravity waves on near‐surface air temperatures, with amplitudes of 2 K and periods of 10 min. These waves possibly propagate downward through a near isothermal stable layer. Plain Language Summary: The Perseverance rover on Mars is carrying a meteorological station that among other measurements obtains air temperatures at three heights near the surface as well as ground temperatures. We analyze seasonal and local changes in temperatures measured over one Martian year (687 Earth days) in which Perseverance moved several kilometers across Jezero crater, comparing in situ observations with the output from a Global Climate Model of the atmosphere of Mars. Our results show that the diurnal cycle of temperatures is modulated by the solar irradiance on the surface, the amount of dust in the atmosphere, local dynamics and large‐scale weather systems. The temperature difference between the ground and the atmosphere greatly determines the meteorology in the lower atmosphere. Neither this temperature difference, nor temperature fluctuations, which during daytime are a proxy of atmospheric convection driven by the heating of the surface, show seasonal variations in line with the seasonal solar irradiance or dust load. Instead, the rover path toward a more complex topography led to the highest surface‐to‐air temperature difference during the northern hemisphere winter, despite the solar irradiance being minimum at that time. Close to this complex topography, the meteorological station recorded oscillations in near‐surface temperature related to gravity waves. The Mars2020 Perseverance Rover landed successfully on the Martian surface on the Jezero Crater floor (18.44°N, 77.45°E) at Martian solar longitude, Ls, ∼5° in February 2021. Since then, it has produced highly valuable environmental measurements with a versatile scientific payload including the MEDA (Mars Environmental Dynamics Analyzer) suite of environmental sensors. One of the MEDA systems is the PS pressure sensor system, which weighs 40 g and has an estimated absolute accuracy of better than 3.5 Pa and a resolution of 0.13 Pa. We present initial results from the first 414 sols of Martian atmospheric surface pressure observations by the PS, whose performance was found to meet its specifications. Observed sol‐averaged atmospheric pressures follow an anticipated pattern of pressure variation in the course of the advancing season and are consistent with data from other landing missions. The observed daily pressure amplitude varies by ∼2%–5 % of the sol‐averaged pressure, with absolute amplitude 10–35 Pa in an approximately direct relationship with airborne dust. During a regional dust storm, which began at Ls ∼ 135°, the daily pressure amplitude roughly doubled. The daily pressure variations were found to be remarkably sensitive to the seasonal evolution of the atmosphere. In particular, analysis of the daily pressure signature revealed diagnostic information likely related to the regional scale structure of the atmosphere. Comparison of Perseverance pressure observations with data from other landers reveals the global scale seasonal behavior of Mars' atmosphere. It landed in an early Martian spring afternoon in a crater north of Mars' equator called Jezero crater. The rover is equipped with meteorological instruments that have so far produced extensive and valuable data for understanding the Martian atmosphere. One of the meteorological instruments is an accurate and precise pressure sensor. The pressure sensor has revealed large changes in the pressure over the seasons that are related to large changes in the actual mass of the Martian atmosphere. This is in line with seasonal pressure changes measured during previous Mars missions and can be explained as the condensation of the atmosphere onto the Martian poles and its subsequent sublimation. On a shorter time scale, the pressure sensor revealed complex pressure changes over a Martian day. These variations are thought to be related to atmospheric dust, whose ubiquitous nature is known to have a strong influence on the Martian climate. As the seasons progressed, the daily pressure variations morphed to exhibit different patterns likely related to the large‐scale regional changes in the atmosphere. Comparison of Perseverance pressure observations with other landers revealed the global nature of the atmosphere.
