1. DoubleTake: Geometry Guided Depth Estimation

Abstract

Estimating depth from a sequence of posed RGB images is a fundamental computer vision task, with applications in augmented reality, path planning etc. Prior work typically makes use of previous frames in a multi view stereo framework, relying on matching textures in a local neighborhood. In contrast, our model leverages historical predictions by giving the latest 3D geometry data as an extra input to our network. This self-generated geometric hint can encode information from areas of the scene not covered by the keyframes and it is more regularized when compared to individual predicted depth maps for previous frames. We introduce a Hint MLP which combines cost volume features with a hint of the prior geometry, rendered as a depth map from the current camera location, together with a measure of the confidence in the prior geometry. We demonstrate that our method, which can run at interactive speeds, achieves state-of-the-art estimates of depth and 3D scene reconstruction in both offline and incremental evaluation scenarios., Comment: ECCV 2024 Version

Abstract

Extracting planes from a 3D scene is useful for downstream tasks in robotics and augmented reality. In this paper we tackle the problem of estimating the planar surfaces in a scene from posed images. Our first finding is that a surprisingly competitive baseline results from combining popular clustering algorithms with recent improvements in 3D geometry estimation. However, such purely geometric methods are understandably oblivious to plane semantics, which are crucial to discerning distinct planes. To overcome this limitation, we propose a method that predicts multi-view consistent plane embeddings that complement geometry when clustering points into planes. We show through extensive evaluation on the ScanNetV2 dataset that our new method outperforms existing approaches and our strong geometric baseline for the task of plane estimation.

7. Virtual Occlusions Through Implicit Depth

Abstract

For augmented reality (AR), it is important that virtual assets appear to `sit among' real world objects. The virtual element should variously occlude and be occluded by real matter, based on a plausible depth ordering. This occlusion should be consistent over time as the viewer's camera moves. Unfortunately, small mistakes in the estimated scene depth can ruin the downstream occlusion mask, and thereby the AR illusion. Especially in real-time settings, depths inferred near boundaries or across time can be inconsistent. In this paper, we challenge the need for depth-regression as an intermediate step. We instead propose an implicit model for depth and use that to predict the occlusion mask directly. The inputs to our network are one or more color images, plus the known depths of any virtual geometry. We show how our occlusion predictions are more accurate and more temporally stable than predictions derived from traditional depth-estimation models. We obtain state-of-the-art occlusion results on the challenging ScanNetv2 dataset and superior qualitative results on real scenes., Comment: Accepted to CVPR 2023

Abstract

Neural Radiance Fields (NeRFs) are emerging as a ubiquitous scene representation that allows for novel view synthesis. Increasingly, NeRFs will be shareable with other people. Before sharing a NeRF, though, it might be desirable to remove personal information or unsightly objects. Such removal is not easily achieved with the current NeRF editing frameworks. We propose a framework to remove objects from a NeRF representation created from an RGB-D sequence. Our NeRF inpainting method leverages recent work in 2D image inpainting and is guided by a user-provided mask. Our algorithm is underpinned by a confidence based view selection procedure. It chooses which of the individual 2D inpainted images to use in the creation of the NeRF, so that the resulting inpainted NeRF is 3D consistent. We show that our method for NeRF editing is effective for synthesizing plausible inpaintings in a multi-view coherent manner. We validate our approach using a new and still-challenging dataset for the task of NeRF inpainting.

Abstract

Can we relocalize in a scene represented by a single reference image? Standard visual relocalization requires hundreds of images and scale calibration to build a scene-specific 3D map. In contrast, we propose Map-free Relocalization, i.e., using only one photo of a scene to enable instant, metric scaled relocalization. Existing datasets are not suitable to benchmark map-free relocalization, due to their focus on large scenes or their limited variability. Thus, we have constructed a new dataset of 655 small places of interest, such as sculptures, murals and fountains, collected worldwide. Each place comes with a reference image to serve as a relocalization anchor, and dozens of query images with known, metric camera poses. The dataset features changing conditions, stark viewpoint changes, high variability across places, and queries with low to no visual overlap with the reference image. We identify two viable families of existing methods to provide baseline results: relative pose regression, and feature matching combined with single-image depth prediction. While these methods show reasonable performance on some favorable scenes in our dataset, map-free relocalization proves to be a challenge that requires new, innovative solutions., Comment: ECCV2022 camera-ready. 14 pages + 4 reference pages

10. Learning Structured Gaussians to Approximate Deep Ensembles

Abstract

This paper proposes using a sparse-structured multivariate Gaussian to provide a closed-form approximator for the output of probabilistic ensemble models used for dense image prediction tasks. This is achieved through a convolutional neural network that predicts the mean and covariance of the distribution, where the inverse covariance is parameterised by a sparsely structured Cholesky matrix. Similarly to distillation approaches, our single network is trained to maximise the probability of samples from pre-trained probabilistic models, in this work we use a fixed ensemble of networks. Once trained, our compact representation can be used to efficiently draw spatially correlated samples from the approximated output distribution. Importantly, this approach captures the uncertainty and structured correlations in the predictions explicitly in a formal distribution, rather than implicitly through sampling alone. This allows direct introspection of the model, enabling visualisation of the learned structure. Moreover, this formulation provides two further benefits: estimation of a sample probability, and the introduction of arbitrary spatial conditioning at test time. We demonstrate the merits of our approach on monocular depth estimation and show that the advantages of our approach are obtained with comparable quantitative performance., Comment: Accepted at CVPR 2022

13. The GAN that Warped: Semantic Attribute Editing with Unpaired Data

Abstract

Deep neural networks have recently been used to edit images with great success, in particular for faces. However, they are often limited to only being able to work at a restricted range of resolutions. Many methods are so flexible that face edits can often result in an unwanted loss of identity. This work proposes to learn how to perform semantic image edits through the application of smooth warp fields. Previous approaches that attempted to use warping for semantic edits required paired data, i.e. example images of the same subject with different semantic attributes. In contrast, we employ recent advances in Generative Adversarial Networks that allow our model to be trained with unpaired data. We demonstrate face editing at very high resolutions (4k images) with a single forward pass of a deep network at a lower resolution. We also show that our edits are substantially better at preserving the subject's identity. The robustness of our approach is demonstrated by showing plausible image editing results on the Cub200 birds dataset. 14. Training VAEs Under Structured Residuals

Abstract

Variational auto-encoders (VAEs) are a popular and powerful deep generative model. Previous works on VAEs have assumed a factorized likelihood model, whereby the output uncertainty of each pixel is assumed to be independent. This approximation is clearly limited as demonstrated by observing a residual image from a VAE reconstruction, which often possess a high level of structure. This paper demonstrates a novel scheme to incorporate a structured Gaussian likelihood prediction network within the VAE that allows the residual correlations to be modeled. Our novel architecture, with minimal increase in complexity, incorporates the covariance matrix prediction within the VAE. We also propose a new mechanism for allowing structured uncertainty on color images. Furthermore, we provide a scheme for effectively training this model, and include some suggestions for improving performance in terms of efficiency or modeling longer range correlations., Comment: Simplified training methodology, added more results

15. Structured Uncertainty Prediction Networks

Abstract

This paper is the first work to propose a network to predict a structured uncertainty distribution for a synthesized image. Previous approaches have been mostly limited to predicting diagonal covariance matrices. Our novel model learns to predict a full Gaussian covariance matrix for each reconstruction, which permits efficient sampling and likelihood evaluation. We demonstrate that our model can accurately reconstruct ground truth correlated residual distributions for synthetic datasets and generate plausible high frequency samples for real face images. 17. Lifting Object Detection Datasets into 3D

Abstract

While data has certainly taken the center stage in computer vision in recent years, it can still be difficult to obtain in certain scenarios. In particular, acquiring ground truth 3D shapes of objects pictured in 2D images remains a challenging feat and this has hampered progress in recognition-based object reconstruction from a single image. Here we propose to bypass previous solutions such as 3D scanning or manual design, that scale poorly, and instead populate object category detection datasets semi-automatically with dense, per-object 3D reconstructions, bootstrapped from:(i) class labels, (ii) ground truth figure-ground segmentations and (iii) a small set of keypoint annotations. Our proposed algorithm first estimates camera viewpoint using rigid structure-from-motion and then reconstructs object shapes by optimizing over visual hull proposals guided by loose within-class shape similarity assumptions. The visual hull sampling process attempts to intersect an object's projection cone with the cones of minimal subsets of other similar objects among those pictured from certain vantage points. We show that our method is able to produce convincing per-object 3D reconstructions and to accurately estimate cameras viewpoints on one of the most challenging existing object-category detection datasets, PASCAL VOC. We hope that our results will re-stimulate interest on joint object recognition and 3D reconstruction from a single image.

19. Development and Feasibility of an App to Decrease Risk Factors for Type 2 Diabetes in Hispanic Women With Recent Gestational Diabetes (Hola Bebé, Adiós Diabetes): Pilot Pre-Post Study

BackgroundHispanic women have increased risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), which carries an increased risk for future type 2 diabetes, compared to non-Hispanic women. In addition, Hispanic women are less likely to engage in healthy eating and physical activity, which are both risk factors for type 2 diabetes. Supporting patients to engage in healthy lifestyle behaviors through mobile health (mHealth) interventions is increasingly recognized as a viable, underused tool for disease prevention, as they reduce barriers to access frequently experienced in face-to-face interventions. Despite the high percentage of smartphone ownership among Hispanics, mHealth programs to reduce risk factors for type 2 diabetes in Hispanic women with prior GDM are lacking. ObjectiveThis study aimed to (1) develop a mobile app (¡Hola Bebé, Adiós Diabetes!) to pilot test a culturally tailored, bilingual (Spanish/English) lifestyle program to reduce risk factors for type 2 diabetes in Hispanic women with GDM in the prior 5 years; (2) examine the acceptability and usability of the app; and (3) assess the short-term effectiveness of the app in increasing self-efficacy for both healthy eating and physical activity, and in decreasing weight. MethodsSocial cognitive theory provided the framework for the study. A prototype app was developed based on prior research and cultural tailoring of content. Features included educational audiovisual modules on healthy eating and physical activity; personal action plans; motivational text messages; weight tracking; user-friendly, easy-to-follow recipes; directions on building a balanced plate; and tiered badges to reward achievements. Perceptions of the app’s acceptability and usability were explored through four focus groups. Short-term effectiveness of the app was tested in an 8-week single group pilot study. ResultsIn total, 11 Hispanic women, receiving care at a federally qualified community health center, aged 18-45 years, and with GDM in the last 5 years, participated in four focus groups to evaluate the app’s acceptability and usability. Participants found the following sections most useful: audiovisual modules, badges for completion of activities, weight-tracking graphics, and recipes. Suggested modifications included adjustments in phrasing, graphics, and a tiering system of badges. After app modifications, we conducted usability testing with 4 Hispanic women, with the key result being the suggestion for a “how-to tutorial.” To assess short-term effectiveness, 21 Hispanic women with prior GDM participated in the pilot. There was a statistically significant improvement in both self-efficacy for physical activity (P=.003) and self-efficacy for healthy eating (P=.007). Weight decreased but not significantly. Backend process data revealed a high level of user engagement. ConclusionsThese data support the app’s acceptability, usability, and short-term effectiveness, suggesting that this mHealth program has the potential to fill the gap in care experienced by Hispanic women with prior GDM following pregnancy. Future studies are needed to determine the effectiveness of an enhanced app in a randomized controlled trial. No es casualidad que, con el establecimiento de la industria cinematográfica en Los Ángeles, la propia ciudad y sus alrededores sirvieran como set de rodaje. Algunos ejemplos incluyen obras elaboradas por los principales arquitectos americanos del momento como Wright, su discípulo John Lautner, Koenig o por el arquitecto vienés Richard Neutra. Este revolucionario estilo desataca sobre otros más típicos de California, como es el Spanish Colonial o la casa bungalow, debido a sus innovadoras estructuras, sus impecables diseños de interiores y las impresionantes vistas que ofrecen sus localizaciones, lo que llamó la atención de las productoras de cine para emplearlas como escenografía de múltiples películas. 30. From canopy to single flowers: a downscale approach to flowering of the invasive species Acacia longifolia

Abstract

Context: Acacia longifolia is a native legume of south-eastern Australia and Tasmania and is invasive in many parts of the world. A key feature to its success is the production of a high quantity of flowers every season, resulting in a massive seedbank that remains dormant in the soil for decades. Many studies have been performed on this species’ reproductive biology, but none has focused on flowering in detail. Aims: Our main objective was to understand this species’ resource allocation strategy that ensures its successful reproduction in the invasive range. Methods: We developed an integrative approach, assessing flowering at different levels, namely, canopy and branch flowering (macro scale), downscaling to individual flower functional stages and their duration, pollen longevity and stigma receptivity (micro scale). We performed this study in three different locations in sand dunes along the Portuguese coast with different environmental conditions. Key results: Canopy flowering shows no difference among sites. Pollen and stigma assessment showed that this species is protogynous, with the stigma being highly receptive long before pollen is released. Once released, pollen lasts roughly 72 h. Individual flowers are relatively short-lived, with a rapid progression from closed flower buds to fully open flowers. Implications: Our results indicated that A. longifolia has a resource trade-off strategy of investing in flowers and pollen that are relatively short-lived, which are counterbalanced by their massive quantities.

37. Genetic analyses reveal a complex introduction history of the globally invasive tree Acacia longifolia.

Abstract

Acacia longifolia (Sydney golden wattle) is considered one of the most problematic plant invaders in Mediterranean-type ecosystems. In this study, we investigate the species’ invasion history by comparing the genetic diversity and structure of native (Australia) and several invasive range (Brazil, Portugal, South Africa, Spain, and Uruguay) populations and by modelling different introduction scenarios using these data. We sampled 272 A. longifolia individuals – 126 from different invasive ranges and 146 from the native range – from 41 populations. We genotyped all individuals at four chloroplast and 12 nuclear microsatellite markers. From these data we calculated diversity metrics, identified chloroplast haplotypes, and estimated population genetic structure based on Bayesian assignment tests. We used Approximate Bayesian Computation (ABC) models to infer the likely introduction history into each invaded country. In Australia, population genetic structure of A. longifolia appears to be strongly shaped by the Bass Strait and we identified two genetic clusters largely corresponding to mainland Australian and Tasmanian populations. We found invasive populations to represent a mixture of these clusters. Similar levels of genetic diversity were present in native and invasive ranges, indicating that invasive populations did not go through a genetic bottleneck. Bayesian assignment tests and chloroplast haplotype frequencies further suggested a secondary introduction event between South Africa and Portugal. However, ABC analyses could not confidently identify the native source(s) of invasive populations in these two countries, probably due to the known high propagule pressure that accompanied these introductions. ABC analyses identified Tasmania as the likely source of invasive populations in Brazil and Uruguay. A definitive native source for Spanish populations could also not be identified. This study shows that tracing the introduction history of A. longifolia is difficult, most likely because of the complexity associated with the extensive movement of the species around the world. Abstract

En la producción ganadera actual, las granjas funcionan como núcleos estancos divididos en diferentes fases donde cada una de ellas tiene su propia importancia, pero comparten problemas comunes. El abordaje de los tres principales puntos que hemos considerado en esta tesis doctoral como claves para el funcionamiento básico de una explotación ganadera; el bajo peso al nacimiento, fallos en fertilidad y calidad seminal, nos ha permitido tener una visión global de la importancia a nivel productivo, y en su defecto económico de presentar problemas en cualquiera de estos pilares. El objetivo principal del primer estudio fue el análisis, en condiciones de campo propias del sistema de producción porcina española, del efecto del peso al nacimiento de los lechones en los resultados productivos y su repercusión a nivel económico en las diferentes fases productivas, poniendo especial atención en las bajas en lactación los primeros días de vida. Se seleccionaron un total de 353 animales que se encontraban en rangos de peso comprendidos entre 0,5 kg a 1,2 kg (agrupados en 5 categorías), sin realizar diferenciación por sexo. Se demostró, que los tres grupos de animales con peso al nacimiento entre 0,5 kg y 0,89 kg presentaban una elevada mortalidad y menores tasas de crecimiento en todas las fases de producción que animales con peso al nacimiento superior, determinando que los costes de producción de los lechones y de kg por cerdo se elevasen por encima de los valores de referencia. En lo relativo al segundo estudio, el objetivo principal de este estudio fue conocer el efecto de la aplicación de cloprostenol 24 horas postparto en los parámetros reproductivos de los animales tratados, medidos en términos del intervalo destete/ cubrición (días), la tasa de gestación (%) y la duración de ésta (días), la tasa de abortos (%), la tasa de partos (%) y el tamaño de camada en el ciclo siguiente, registrando el total de nacidos vivos (LNV), muertos (LNM) y totales (LNT). El estudio fue realizado en una explotación de 680 reproductoras, donde se seleccionaron 448 cerdas productivas de ciclos 1-7 (233 cerdas grupo Cloprostenol; 215 cerdas de grupo control). A las cerdas del grupo experimental se les aplicó una inyección intramuscular de 2 ml de cloprostenol sódico (87 μg/ml) (175 μg/animal) (Planate ®, MSD Animal Health, Salamanca, España) 24 horas postparto, mientras que las del grupo control no recibieron tratamiento alguno. Como conclusión y resultados de este capítulo, la inyección de cloprostenol tras el parto en cerdas con una lactación media de 27 días permite una mejora en los parámetros reproductivos de una explotación reduciendo los días no productivos y mejorando los índices de fertilidad en el ciclo productivo siguientes. Estos efectos positivos son más evidentes en animales con elevada paridad. Por último, en el tercer estudio el objetivo fue evaluar el posible efecto sobre los parámetros reproductivos de cerdas ibéricas inseminadas con las dosis seminales de verracos Duroc a las cuales se le había aplicado un tratamiento de foto estimulación. Se utilizaron 152 muestras seminales de 38 verracos Duroc de entre 10 y 45 meses de edad. Se realizaron dos estudios en dos granjas diferentes (A y B). Como conclusión, la aplicación de la foto estimulación con luz LED en las dosis seminales de machos Duroc usados para la inseminación artificial de cerdas ibéricas no mejora los parámetros reproductivos en las condiciones comerciales. Las posibles mejoras en el tamaño de camada en la cerda ibérica deberían ir relacionados más con la mejora genética de las cerdas que con la mejora de los parámetros seminales y las condiciones de inseminación artificial, que están optimizadas. In today's livestock production, farms work as hermetic centers divided into different stages with different levels of relevance but sharing common problems. The study of the three main points that we have considered key points in this doctoral dissertation for the basic operation of an animal husbandry: low birth weight, fertility failures and seminal quality, has allowed us to have a global vision of the importance, both at production and economic level. The main goal of the first study was the analysis, under typical field conditions of the Spanish swine production system, of the effect caused by the weight of the piglet at birth on the production results and its consequence at an economic level in the different stages of production, paying special attention to the losses in lactation during the first days of life. A total of 353 animals were selected, ranging in weight from 0.5 kg to 1.2 kg (grouped in 5 categories), without differentiation by sex. It was shown that the three groups of animals with birth weights between 0.5 kg and 0.89 kg had higher mortality rates and lower growth rates in all production phases than animals with higher birth weights. This caused that piglet production costs and kg per pig were higher than the reference values. Regarding the second study, the main objective was to know the effect of the application of cloprostenol 24 hours postpartum on the reproductive parameters of the treated animals, measured in terms of weaning/insemination interval (days), gestation rate (%) and duration of gestation (days), abortion rate (%), farrowing rate (%) and size of litter of piglets in the following cycle, recording the number of piglets born alive (PBA), piglets stillbirth (PS) and total born piglets (TBP). The study was carried out in a farm of 680 reproductive sows, where 448 productive sows of cycles 1-7 were selected (233 Cloprostenol group sows and 215 control group sows). Sows in the experimental group were given an intramuscular injection of 2 ml cloprostenol sodium (87 μg/ml) (175 μg/animal) (Planate ®, MSD Animal Health, Salamanca, Spain) 24 hours postpartum, while those in the control group received no treatment. The results and conclusion of this chapter is that the injection of cloprostenol after farrowing in sows with an average lactation of 27 days allows an improvement in the reproductive parameters of a farm by reducing non-productive days and improving fertility rate in the following production cycle. These positive effects are more evident in animals with high parity. Finally, in the third study, the objective was to evaluate the possible effect on the reproductive parameters of Iberian sows inseminated with seminal doses from Duroc boars to which a photo-stimulation treatment had been applied. A total of 152 seminal samples from 38 Duroc boars between 10 and 45 months of age were used. Two studies were conducted on two different farms (A and B). As a conclusion, the application of photo stimulation with LED light in seminal doses of Duroc boars used for artificial insemination of Iberian sows does not improve reproductive parameters under commercial conditions. Possible improvements in litter size of the Iberian sow should be related more to the genetic improvement of the sows than to the improvement of seminal parameters and artificial insemination conditions, which are optimized.
