2. The economic value of fire damages in Tuscan agroforestry areas

Abstract

The Tuscan Region (Central Italy) spends about 12 million euros every year in the prevention and suppression of forest fires. In this context, this study aims to analyse the economic and environmental benefits derived from fire suppression activities. Starting from a case study of a real fire event in Tuscany, we simulated three hypothetical scenarios (with different fire durations) without fire extinction activities planned by using the open source software FARSITE. Benefits derived from fire extinction activities can be quantified as the avoided damage, which has been calculated through the estimation of the total economic value of forests not destroyed by fire thanks to the extinction action. The avoided damage is represented by the difference between values of forest areas burned by the real fire event and those burned by simulated fire. By providing an economic estimation of avoided damages, our results confirm that forest fire services and forest management have a high impact on both the economy and the environment.

Abstract

Insoluble particles in ice cores record signatures of past climate parameters like vegetation dynamics, volcanic activity, and aridity. For some of them, the analytical detection relies on intensive bench microscopy investigation and requires dedicated sample preparation steps. Both are laborious, require in-depth knowledge, and often restrict sampling strategies. To help overcome these limitations, we present a framework based on flow imaging microscopy coupled to a deep neural network for autonomous image classification of ice core particles. We train the network to classify seven commonly found classes, namely mineral dust, felsic and mafic (basaltic) volcanic ash grains (tephra), three species of pollen (Corylus avellana, Quercus robur, Quercus suber), and contamination particles that may be introduced onto the ice core surface during core handling operations. The trained network achieves 96.8ĝ€ ̄% classification accuracy at test time. We present the system's potential and its limitations with respect to the detection of mineral dust, pollen grains, and tephra shards, using both controlled materials and real ice core samples. The methodology requires little sample material, is non-destructive, fully reproducible, and does not require any sample preparation procedures. The presented framework can bolster research in the field by cutting down processing time, supporting human-operated microscopy, and further unlocking the paleoclimate potential of ice core records by providing the opportunity to identify an array of ice core particles. Suggestions for an improved system to be deployed within a continuous flow analysis workflow are also presented.

Abstract

Sustainable development is a priority in EU rural development strategies. Due to the multidimensionality of the sustainability issue, this paper presents a Spatial Decision Support System to assess territorial sustainability and help decision-makers in rural planning process. Four globally valid sustainability dimensions were considered (long-term ecological sustainability, satisfaction of basic human needs, promotion of intragenerational and intergenerational equity), measured by a set of socio-cultural-political-environmental indicators by using the Mazziotta and Pareto method. The results of the S-DSS, implemented and verified in Basilicata region (southern Italy), provide the maps of sustainability values for each dimension at municipalities level, showing the usefulness of the tool to identify and monitor rural areas that require priority interventions and resources, in order to foster sustainable rural development., Aestimum, 2020: Special Issue "Sustainable development and circular economy"

Abstract

Friction forces play a key role in mechanical phenomena occurring on all scales, from the operation of microelectromechanical systems to interplate earthquakes. The study of friction forces is also useful for understanding a large spectrum of physical properties of surfaces. Thanks to the development of nanoscale investigation tools such as scanning probe microscopy, the study of friction and wear phenomena down to the atomic scale is becoming a leading topic within the field of surface physics, and has given rise to the science called nanotribology (Urbakh & Meyer, 2010). We focus here on the anisotropic aspects of nanotribology, related in particular to the surface of crystalline materials such as minerals. Frictional anisotropy is characterized by a dependence of the friction force intensity on the sliding direction and friction force components orthogonal to the sliding direction (Zmitrowicz, 1989). We show how an atomic force microscope can be used to map in two dimensions the frictional anisotropy at the nanoscale and how to carry out data interpretation to unravel the friction– surface structure relationship. As a model system, we analyzed the basal plane of antigorite, which is inherently characterized by marked corrugations, and interpreted the data in terms of constitutive models of anisotropic friction (Campione & Capitani, 2013). The proposed approach unravels unexpected mechanical behaviors which, while consolidating a deeper knowledge of atomic-scale mineral physics, can be now considered the cause of macro-scale phenomena related to seismic anisotropy, slip partitioning, glacial surge, etc.

Abstract

A rare case of cochlear implant surgery complication is described: air collection behind the ear. A 61-year-old male with a 20-year history of progressive bilateral profound sensorineural hearing loss underwent cochlear implant surgery on the left ear with Clarion Hi-Res 90K (Advanced Bionics, Sylmar, CA, USA). Ten days after surgery, the patient presented visible tumefaction behind the ear corresponding to the receiver-stimulator. Ultrasonography, with a probe of 30 MHz, of the surface behind the ear showed formation of probable liquid content but aspiration with a 20-gauge needle yielded 30 cm3 of air without blood or pus. An unusual case is described of a minor complication occurring in an adult cochlear implant patient presenting a swelling behind the ear that was found to be collected air. Although ultrasonography can be useful to evaluate localization of swelling behind the ear and to differentiate between liquid and solid collection, it is not useful for identification of air collection. The Eustachian tube test can show an abnormally patent tube and prevent this complication.
