In the last decade, EU became aware of its dependency on mining countries for mineral resources. In that context in 2022, France launched new airborne geophysical surveys in the Limousin region (northwestern French Massif Central) which is historically renown for its gold, uranium, tungsten and tin production. Thanks to these new data, it has become possible to both explore the Saint-Goussaud - Auriat zone, centered on the Puy-les-Vignes tungsten deposit and to investigate the numerous W occurrences. To do so, direct geophysical modelling using gravimetric, airborne magnetic and electromagnetic data has allowed to create a 3D regional model. It mainly illustrates locations where evolved granites deepen, possibly associated with hidden granitic cupolas. Besides, electromagnetic data have been analysed to highlight conductive anomalies. The lineament analysis has contributed to identify a conductive corridor, interpreted as a regional structure. Conductive vertical conduits, which are spatially close to mineralized occurrences and stream-sediment anomalies have also been spotted. This new method has thus allowed generating new elements which could be combined and could have implications for granite-related tungsten exploration in this region.

One develops a fast computational methodology for principal component analysis on manifolds. Instead of estimating intrinsic principal components on an object space with a Riemannian structure, one embeds the object space in a numerical space, and the resulting chord distance is used. This method helps us analyzing high, theoretically even infinite dimensional data, from a new perspective. We define the extrinsic principal sub-manifolds of a random object on a Hilbert manifold embedded in a Hilbert space, and the sample counterparts. The resulting extrinsic principal components are useful for dimension data reduction. For application, one retains a very small number of such extrinsic principal components for a shape of contour data sample, extracted from imaging data.

Precision in identifying nanometer-scale device-killer defects is crucial in both semiconductor research and development as well as in production processes. The effectiveness of existing ML-based approaches in this context is largely limited by the scarcity of data, as the production of real semiconductor wafer data for training these models involves high financial and time costs. Moreover, the existing simulation methods fall short of replicating images with identical noise characteristics, surface roughness and stochastic variations at advanced nodes. We propose a method for generating synthetic semiconductor SEM images using a diffusion model within a limited data regime. In contrast to images generated through conventional simulation methods, SEM images generated through our proposed DL method closely resemble real SEM images, replicating their noise characteristics and surface roughness adaptively. Our main contributions, which are validated on three different real semiconductor datasets, are: i) proposing a patch-based generative framework utilizing DDPM to create SEM images with intended defect classes, addressing challenges related to class-imbalance and data insufficiency, ii) demonstrating generated synthetic images closely resemble real SEM images acquired from the tool, preserving all imaging conditions and metrology characteristics without any metadata supervision, iii) demonstrating a defect detector trained on generated defect dataset, either independently or combined with a limited real dataset, can achieve similar or improved performance on real wafer SEM images during validation/testing compared to exclusive training on a real defect dataset, iv) demonstrating the ability of the proposed approach to transfer defect types, critical dimensions, and imaging conditions from one specified CD/Pitch and metrology specifications to another, thereby highlighting its versatility., Comment: 8 pages, 11 figures, to be presented at 2024 International Symposium ELMAR, and published by IEEE in the conference proceedings

Communication plays a vital role in human interaction. Studying language is a worthwhile task and more recently has become quantitative in nature with developments of fields like quantitative comparative linguistics and lexicostatistics. With respect to the authors own native languages, the ancestry of the English language and the Latin alphabet are of the primary interest. The Indo-European Tree traces many modern languages back to the Proto-Indo-European root. Swadesh's cognates played a large role in developing that historical perspective where some of the primary branches are Germanic, Celtic, Italic, and Balto-Slavic. This paper will use data analysis on open books where the simplest singular space is the 3-spider - a union T3 of three rays with their endpoints glued at a point 0 - which can represent these tree spaces for language clustering. These trees are built using a single linkage method for clustering based on distances between samples from languages which use the Latin Script. Taking three languages at a time, the barycenter is determined. Some initial results have found both non-sticky and sticky sample means. If the mean exhibits non-sticky properties, then one language may come from a different ancestor than the other two. If the mean is considered sticky, then the languages may share a common ancestor or all languages may have different ancestry., Comment: 19 pages, 26 figures

Due to potential pitch reduction, the semiconductor industry is adopting High-NA EUVL technology. However, its low depth of focus presents challenges for High Volume Manufacturing. To address this, suppliers are exploring thinner photoresists and new underlayers/hardmasks. These may suffer from poor SNR, complicating defect detection. Vision-based ML algorithms offer a promising solution for semiconductor defect inspection. However, developing a robust ML model across various image resolutions without explicit training remains a challenge for nano-scale defect inspection. This research's goal is to propose a scale-invariant ADCD framework capable to upscale images, addressing this issue. We propose an improvised ADCD framework as SEMI-SuperYOLO-NAS, which builds upon the baseline YOLO-NAS architecture. This framework integrates a SR assisted branch to aid in learning HR features by the defect detection backbone, particularly for detecting nano-scale defect instances from LR images. Additionally, the SR-assisted branch can recursively generate upscaled images from their corresponding downscaled counterparts, enabling defect detection inference across various image resolutions without requiring explicit training. Moreover, we investigate improved data augmentation strategy aimed at generating diverse and realistic training datasets to enhance model performance. We have evaluated our proposed approach using two original FAB datasets obtained from two distinct processes and captured using two different imaging tools. Finally, we demonstrate zero-shot inference for our model on a new, originating from a process condition distinct from the training dataset and possessing different Pitch characteristics. Experimental validation demonstrates that our proposed ADCD framework aids in increasing the throughput of imaging tools for defect inspection by reducing the required image pixel resolutions.

Training-free metrics (a.k.a. zero-cost proxies) are widely used to avoid resource-intensive neural network training, especially in Neural Architecture Search (NAS). Recent studies show that existing training-free metrics have several limitations, such as limited correlation and poor generalisation across different search spaces and tasks. Hence, we propose Sample-Wise Activation Patterns and its derivative, SWAP-Score, a novel high-performance training-free metric. It measures the expressivity of networks over a batch of input samples. The SWAP-Score is strongly correlated with ground-truth performance across various search spaces and tasks, outperforming 15 existing training-free metrics on NAS-Bench-101/201/301 and TransNAS-Bench-101. The SWAP-Score can be further enhanced by regularisation, which leads to even higher correlations in cell-based search space and enables model size control during the search. For example, Spearman's rank correlation coefficient between regularised SWAP-Score and CIFAR-100 validation accuracies on NAS-Bench-201 networks is 0.90, significantly higher than 0.80 from the second-best metric, NWOT. When integrated with an evolutionary algorithm for NAS, our SWAP-NAS achieves competitive performance on CIFAR-10 and ImageNet in approximately 6 minutes and 9 minutes of GPU time respectively., Comment: ICLR2024 Spotlight

The AdS/CFT correspondence is an explicit realization of the holographic principle relating a theory of gravity in a volume of space to a lower dimensional quantum field theory on its boundary. By exploiting elements of quantum error correction, qubit toy models of this correspondence have been constructed for which the bulk logical operators are representable by operators acting on the boundary. Given a boundary subregion, wedges in the volume space are used to enclose the bulk qubits for which logical operators are reconstructable on that boundary subregion. In this thesis a number of different wedges, such as the causal wedge, greedy entanglement wedge and minimum entanglement wedge, are examined. More specifically, Monte-Carlo simulations of boundary erasure are performed with various toy models to study the differences between wedges and the effect on these wedge by the type of the model, non-uniform boundaries and stacking of models. It has been found that the minimum entanglement wedge is the best approximate for the true geometric wedge. This is illustrated by an example toy model for which an operator beyond the greedy entanglement wedge was also reconstructed. In addition, by calculating the entropy of these subregions, the viability of a mutual information wedge is rejected. In semiconductor manufacturing, lithography has often been the manufacturing step defining the smallest possible pattern dimensions. In recent years, progress has been made towards high-NA (Numerical Aperture) EUVL (Extreme-Ultraviolet-Lithography) paradigm, which promises to advance pattern shrinking (2 nm node and beyond). However, a significant increase in stochastic defects and the complexity of defect detection becomes more pronounced with high-NA. Present defect inspection techniques (both non-machine learning and machine learning based), fail to achieve satisfactory performance at high-NA dimensions. In this work, we investigate the use of the Slicing Aided Hyper Inference (SAHI) framework for improving upon current techniques. Using SAHI, inference is performed on size-increased slices of the SEM images. This leads to the object detector's receptive field being more effective in capturing small defect instances. First, the performance on previously investigated semiconductor datasets is benchmarked across various configurations, and the SAHI approach is demonstrated to substantially enhance the detection of small defects, by approx. 2x. Afterwards, we also demonstrated application of SAHI leads to flawless detection rates on a new test dataset, with scenarios not encountered during training, whereas previous trained models failed. Continual shrinking of pattern dimensions in the semiconductor domain is making it increasingly difficult to inspect defects due to factors such as the presence of stochastic noise and the dynamic behavior of defect patterns and types. Conventional rule-based methods and non-parametric supervised machine learning algorithms like KNN mostly fail at the requirements of semiconductor defect inspection at these advanced nodes. Deep Learning (DL)-based methods have gained popularity in the semiconductor defect inspection domain because they have been proven robust towards these challenging scenarios. In this research work, we have presented an automated DL-based approach for efficient localization and classification of defects in SEM images. We have proposed SEMI-CenterNet (SEMI-CN), a customized CN architecture trained on SEM images of semiconductor wafer defects. The use of the proposed CN approach allows improved computational efficiency compared to previously studied DL models. SEMI-CN gets trained to output the center, class, size, and offset of a defect instance. This is different from the approach of most object detection models that use anchors for bounding box prediction. Previous methods predict redundant bounding boxes, most of which are discarded in postprocessing. CN mitigates this by only predicting boxes for likely defect center points. We train SEMI-CN on two datasets and benchmark two ResNet backbones for the framework. Initially, ResNet models pretrained on the COCO dataset undergo training using two datasets separately. Primarily, SEMI-CN shows significant improvement in inference time against previous research works. Finally, transfer learning (using weights of custom SEM dataset) is applied from ADI dataset to AEI dataset and vice-versa, which reduces the required training time for both backbones to reach the best mAP against conventional training method.

Gender inequity is one of the biggest challenges facing the STEM workforce. While there are many studies that look into gender disparities within STEM and academia, the majority of these have been designed and executed by those unfamiliar with research in sociology and gender studies. They adopt a normative view of gender as a binary choice of 'male' or 'female,' leaving individuals whose genders do not fit within that model out of such research entirely. This especially impacts those experiencing multiple axes of marginalization, such as race, disability, and socioeconomic status. For STEM fields to recruit and retain members of historically excluded groups, a new paradigm must be developed. Here, we collate a new dataset of the methods used in 119 past studies of gender equity, and recommend better survey practices and institutional policies based on a more complex and accurate approach to gender. We find that problematic approaches to gender in surveys can be classified into 5 main themes - treating gender as white, observable, discrete, as a statistic, and as inconsequential. We recommend allowing self-reporting of gender and never automating gender assignment within research. This work identifies the key areas of development for studies of gender-based inclusion within STEM, and provides recommended solutions to support the methodological uplift required for this work to be both scientifically sound and fully inclusive., Comment: 33 pages (15 pages plus references), 1 table. With continuous progression of Moore's Law, integrated circuit (IC) device complexity is also increasing. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) image based extensive defect inspection and accurate metrology extraction are two main challenges in advanced node (2 nm and beyond) technology. Deep learning (DL) algorithm based computer vision approaches gained popularity in semiconductor defect inspection over last few years. In this research work, a new semiconductor defect inspection framework "SEMI-DiffusionInst" is investigated and compared to previous frameworks. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this work is the first demonstration to accurately detect and precisely segment semiconductor defect patterns by using a diffusion model. Different feature extractor networks as backbones and data sampling strategies are investigated towards achieving a balanced trade-off between precision and computing efficiency. Our proposed approach outperforms previous work on overall mAP and performs comparatively better or as per for almost all defect classes (per class APs). The bounding box and segmentation mAPs achieved by the proposed SEMI-DiffusionInst model are improved by 3.83% and 2.10%, respectively. Among individual defect types, precision on line collapse and thin bridge defects are improved approximately 15\% on detection task for both defect types. It has also been shown that by tuning inference hyperparameters, inference time can be improved significantly without compromising model precision. Cosmological analyses with type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) often assume a single empirical relation between color and luminosity ($\beta$) and do not account for varying host-galaxy dust properties. However, from studies of dust in large samples of galaxies, it is known that dust attenuation can vary significantly. Here we take advantage of state-of-the-art modeling of galaxy properties to characterize dust parameters (dust attenuation $A_V$, and a parameter describing the dust law slope $R_V$) for the Dark Energy Survey (DES) SN Ia host galaxies using the publicly available \texttt{BAGPIPES} code. Utilizing optical and infrared data of the hosts alone, we find three key aspects of host dust that impact SN Ia cosmology: 1) there exists a large range ($\sim1-6$) of host $R_V$ 2) high stellar mass hosts have $R_V$ on average $\sim0.7$ lower than that of low-mass hosts 3) there is a significant ($>3\sigma$) correlation between the Hubble diagram residuals of red SNe Ia that when corrected for reduces scatter by $\sim13\%$ and the significance of the ``mass step'' to $\sim1\sigma$. These represent independent confirmations of recent predictions based on dust that attempted to explain the puzzling ``mass step'' and intrinsic scatter ($\sigma_{\rm int}$) in SN Ia analyses. We also find that red-sequence galaxies have both lower and more peaked dust law slope distributions on average in comparison to non red-sequence galaxies. We find that the SN Ia $\beta$ and $\sigma_{\rm int}$ both differ by $>3\sigma$ when determined separately for red-sequence galaxy and all other galaxy hosts. The agreement between fitted host-$R_V$ and SN Ia $\beta$ \& $\sigma_{\rm int}$ suggests that host dust properties play a major role in SN Ia color-luminosity standardization and supports the claim that SN Ia intrinsic scatter is driven by $R_V$ variation., Comment: 22 pages. Optimizing the reaction to network events, which is critical in tasks such as clock synchronization, multicast, and routing, becomes increasingly challenging as networks grow larger. To improve the reaction time compared to centralized solutions, the theory community has made significant progress in the design of message-passing algorithms that leverage all nodes for distributed computation, and the advent of programmable switches makes it now possible to materialize them. We propose FRANCIS, a framework and associated libraries for running message-passing algorithms on programmable switches. It features primitives that allow easy integration of such algorithms for quickly reacting to network events while optimizing resource consumption. We use FRANCIS to implement event reaction solutions that improve clock synchronization, source-routed multicast, and routing and demonstrate up to 18x reduction in reaction time., Comment: 22 pages, 19 figures

Neural architecture search (NAS) aims to automate architecture engineering in neural networks. This often requires a high computational overhead to evaluate a number of candidate networks from the set of all possible networks in the search space during the search. Prediction of the networks' performance can alleviate this high computational overhead by mitigating the need for evaluating every candidate network. Developing such a predictor typically requires a large number of evaluated architectures which may be difficult to obtain. We address this challenge by proposing a novel evolutionary-based NAS strategy, Predictor-assisted E-NAS (PRE-NAS), which can perform well even with an extremely small number of evaluated architectures. PRE-NAS leverages new evolutionary search strategies and integrates high-fidelity weight inheritance over generations. Unlike one-shot strategies, which may suffer from bias in the evaluation due to weight sharing, offspring candidates in PRE-NAS are topologically homogeneous, which circumvents bias and leads to more accurate predictions. Extensive experiments on NAS-Bench-201 and DARTS search spaces show that PRE-NAS can outperform state-of-the-art NAS methods. With only a single GPU searching for 0.6 days, competitive architecture can be found by PRE-NAS which achieves 2.40% and 24% test error rates on CIFAR-10 and ImageNet respectively., Comment: Accepted by GECCO 2022

The rainbow Tur\'an number, a natural extension of the well studied traditional Tur\'an number, was introduced in 2007 by Keevash, Mubayi, Sudakov and Verstra\"ete. The rainbow Tur\'an number of a graph $H$, $ex^{*}(n,H)$, is the largest number of edges for an $n$ vertex graph $G$ which can be properly edge colored with no rainbow $H$ subgraph. We explore the reduction method for finding upper bounds on rainbow Tur\'an numbers, and use this to inform results for the rainbow Tur\'an numbers of double stars, caterpillars, and perfect binary trees. In addition, we define $k$-unique colorings and the related $k$-unique Tur\'an numbers. We provide preliminary results on this new variant on the classic problem.

The inception of the Relational Graph Convolutional Network (R-GCN) marked a milestone in the Semantic Web domain as a widely cited method that generalises end-to-end hierarchical representation learning to Knowledge Graphs (KGs). R-GCNs generate representations for nodes of interest by repeatedly aggregating parameterised, relation-specific transformations of their neighbours. However, in this paper, we argue that the the R-GCN's main contribution lies in this "message passing" paradigm, rather than the learned weights. To this end, we introduce the "Random Relational Graph Convolutional Network" (RR-GCN), which leaves all parameters untrained and thus constructs node embeddings by aggregating randomly transformed random representations from neighbours, i.e., with no learned parameters. We empirically show that RR-GCNs can compete with fully trained R-GCNs in both node classification and link prediction settings.

On 2019 August 14 at 21:10:39 UTC, the LIGO/Virgo Collaboration (LVC) detected a possible neutron star-black hole merger (NSBH), the first ever identified. An extensive search for an optical counterpart of this event, designated GW190814, was undertaken using the Dark Energy Camera (DECam) on the 4m Victor M. Blanco Telescope at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory. Target of Opportunity interrupts were issued on 8 separate nights to observe 11 candidates using the 4.1m Southern Astrophysical Research (SOAR) telescope's Goodman High Throughput Spectrograph in order to assess whether any of these transients was likely to be an optical counterpart of the possible NSBH merger. Here, we describe the process of observing with SOAR, the analysis of our spectra, our spectroscopic typing methodology, and our resultant conclusion that none of the candidates corresponded to the gravitational wave merger event but were all instead other transients. Finally, we describe the lessons learned from this effort. In this paper one develops nonparametric inference procedures for comparing two extrinsic antimeans on compact manifolds. Based on recent Central limit theorems for extrinsic sample antimeans w.r.t. an arbitrary embedding of a compact manifold in a Euclidean space, one derives an asymptotic chi square test for the equality of two extrinsic antimeans. Applications are given to distributions on complex projective space $CP^{k-2}$ w.r.t. the Veronese-Whitney embedding, that is a submanifold representation for the Kendall planar shape space. Two medical imaging analysis applications are also given.

One regards spaces of trees as stratified spaces, to study distributions of phylogenetic trees. Stratified spaces with may have cycles, however spaces of trees with a fixed number of leafs are contractible. Spaces of trees with three leafs, in particular, are spiders with three legs. One gives an elementary proof of the stickiness of intrinsic sample means on spiders. One also represents four leafs tree data in terms of an associated Petersen graph. One applies such ideas to analyze RNA sequences of SARS-CoV-2 from multiple sources, by building samples of trees and running nonparametric statistics for intrinsic means on tree spaces with three and four leafs. We present the statistical methods that have been developed to analyse the OzDES reverberation mapping sample. To perform this statistical analysis we have created a suite of customisable simulations that mimic the characteristics of each source in the OzDES sample. These characteristics include: the variability in the photometric and spectroscopic lightcurves, the measurement uncertainties, and the observational cadence. By simulating the sources in the OzDES sample that contain the CIV emission line, we developed a set of criteria that rank the reliability of a recovered time lag depending on the agreement between different recovery methods, the magnitude of the uncertainties, and the rate at which false positives were found in the simulations. These criteria were applied to simulated light curves and these results used to estimate the quality of the resulting Radius-Luminosity relation.We grade the results using three quality levels (gold, silver and bronze). The input slope of the R-L relation was recovered within $1\sigma$ for each of the three quality samples, with the gold standard having the lowest dispersion with a recovered a R-L relation slope of $0.454\pm 0.016$ with an input slope of 0.47. We study a phenomenological class of models where dark matter converts to dark radiation in the low redshift epoch. This class of models, dubbed DMDR, characterizes the evolution of comoving dark matter density with two extra parameters, and may be able to help alleviate the observed discrepancies between early- and late-time probes of the universe. We investigate how the conversion affects key cosmological observables such as the CMB temperature and matter power spectra. Combining 3x2pt data from Year 1 of the Dark Energy Survey, {\it Planck}-2018 CMB temperature and polarization data, supernovae (SN) Type Ia data from Pantheon, and baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) data from BOSS DR12, MGS and 6dFGS, we place new constraints on the amount of dark matter that has converted to dark radiation and the rate of this conversion. The fraction of the dark matter that has converted since the beginning of the universe in units of the current amount of dark matter, $\zeta$, is constrained at 68\% confidence level to be $<0.32$ for DES-Y1 3x2pt data, $<0.030$ for CMB+SN+BAO data, and $<0.037$ for the combined dataset. The probability that the DES and CMB+SN+BAO datasets are concordant increases from 4\% for the $\Lambda$CDM model to 8\% (less tension) for DMDR. The tension in $S_8 = \sigma_8 \sqrt{\Omega_{\rm m}/0.3}$ between DES-Y1 3x2pt and CMB+SN+BAO is slightly reduced from $2.3\sigma$ to $1.9\sigma$. We find no reduction in the Hubble tension when the combined data is compared to distance-ladder measurements in the DMDR model. The maximum-posterior goodness-of-fit statistics of DMDR and $\Lambda$CDM model are comparable, indicating no preference for the DMDR cosmology over $\Lambda$CDM., Comment: 23 pages, 11 figures. Gender equity remains a major issue facing the field of planetary science, and there is broad interest in addressing gender disparities within space science and related disciplines. Many studies of these topics have been performed by professional planetary scientists who are relatively unfamiliar with research in fields such as gender studies and sociology. As a result, they adopt a normative view of gender as a binary choice of 'male' or 'female,' leaving planetary scientists whose genders do not fit within that model out of such research entirely. Reductive frameworks of gender and an overemphasis on quantification as an indicator of gendered phenomena are harmful to people of marginalized genders, especially those who live at the intersections of multiple axes of marginalization such as race, disability, and socioeconomic status. In order for the planetary science community to best serve its marginalized members as we move into the next decade, a new paradigm must be established. Binary supermassive black holes (BSBHs) are expected to be a generic byproduct from hierarchical galaxy formation. The final coalescence of BSBHs is thought to be the loudest gravitational wave (GW) siren, yet no confirmed BSBH is known in the GW-dominated regime. While periodic quasars have been proposed as BSBH candidates, the physical origin of the periodicity has been largely uncertain. Here we report discovery of a periodicity (P=1607$\pm$7 days) at 99.95% significance (with a global p-value of ~$10^{-3}$ accounting for the look elsewhere effect) in the optical light curves of a redshift 1.53 quasar, SDSS J025214.67-002813.7. Combining archival Sloan Digital Sky Survey data with new, sensitive imaging from the Dark Energy Survey, the total ~20-yr time baseline spans ~4.6 cycles of the observed 4.4-yr (restframe 1.7-yr) periodicity. The light curves are best fit by a bursty model predicted by hydrodynamic simulations of circumbinary accretion disks. The periodicity is likely caused by accretion rate modulation by a milli-parsec BSBH emitting GWs, dynamically coupled to the circumbinary accretion disk. A bursty hydrodynamic variability model is statistically preferred over a smooth, sinusoidal model expected from relativistic Doppler boost, a kinematic effect proposed for PG1302-102. Furthermore, the frequency dependence of the variability amplitudes disfavors Doppler boost, lending independent support to the circumbinary accretion variability hypothesis. Given our detection rate of one BSBH candidate from circumbinary accretion variability out of 625 quasars, it suggests that future large, sensitive synoptic surveys such as the Vera C. Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time may be able to detect hundreds to thousands of candidate BSBHs from circumbinary accretion with direct implications for Laser Interferometer Space Antenna., Comment: Accepted to MNRAS, 17 pages, 9 figures

We measure the projected number density profiles of galaxies and the splashback feature in clusters selected by the Sunyaev--Zeldovich (SZ) effect from the Advanced Atacama Cosmology Telescope (AdvACT) survey using galaxies observed by the Dark Energy Survey (DES). The splashback radius for the complete galaxy sample is consistent with theoretical measurements from CDM-only simulations, and is located at $2.4^{+0.3}_{-0.4}$ Mpc $h^{-1}$. We split the sample based on galaxy color and find significant differences in the profile shapes. Red galaxies and those in the green valley show a splashback-like minimum in their slope profile consistent with theoretical predictions, while the bluest galaxies show a weak feature that appears at a smaller radius. We develop a mapping of galaxies to subhalos in $N$-body simulations by splitting subhalos based on infall time onto the cluster halos. We find that the location of the steepest slope and differences in the shapes of the profiles can be mapped to differences in the average time of infall of galaxies of different colors. The minima of the slope in the galaxy profiles trace a discontinuity in the phase space of dark matter halos. By relating spatial profiles to infall time for galaxies of different colours, we can use splashback as a clock to understand galaxy quenching. We find that red galaxies have on average been in their clusters for over $3.2 ~\rm Gyrs$, green galaxies about $2.2 ~\rm Gyrs$, while blue galaxies have been accreted most recently and have not reached apocenter. Using the information from the complete radial profiles, we fit a simple quenching model and find that the onset of galaxy quenching in clusters occurs after a delay of about a gigayear, and that galaxies quench rapidly thereafter with an exponential timescale of $0.6$ Gyr., Comment: 23 pages, 10 figures, to be submitted to ApJ

Measurements of large-scale structure are interpreted using theoretical predictions for the matter distribution, including potential impacts of baryonic physics. We constrain the feedback strength of baryons jointly with cosmology using weak lensing and galaxy clustering observables (3$\times$2pt) of Dark Energy Survey (DES) Year 1 data in combination with external information from baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) and Planck cosmic microwave background polarization. Our baryon modeling is informed by a set of hydrodynamical simulations that span a variety of baryon scenarios; we span this space via a Principal Component (PC) analysis of the summary statistics extracted from these simulations. We show that at the level of DES Y1 constraining power, one PC is sufficient to describe the variation of baryonic effects in the observables, and the first PC amplitude ($Q_1$) generally reflects the strength of baryon feedback. With the upper limit of $Q_1$ prior being bound by the Illustris feedback scenarios, we reach $\sim 20\%$ improvement in the constraint of $S_8=\sigma_8(\Omega_{\rm m}/0.3)^{0.5}=0.788^{+0.018}_{-0.021}$ compared to the original DES 3$\times$2pt analysis. This gain is driven by the inclusion of small-scale cosmic shear information down to 2.5 arcmin, which was excluded in previous DES analyses that did not model baryonic physics. We obtain $S_8=0.781^{+0.014}_{-0.015}$ for the combined DES Y1+Planck EE+BAO analysis with a non-informative $Q_1$ prior. In terms of the baryon constraints, we measure $Q_1=1.14^{+2.20}_{-2.80}$ for DES Y1 only and $Q_1=1.42^{+1.63}_{-1.48}$ for DESY1+Planck EE+BAO, allowing us to exclude one of the most extreme AGN feedback hydrodynamical scenario at more than $2 \sigma$., Comment: 22 pages, 18 figures, 2 tables. accepted to MNRAS.
