Abstract

Water pollution remains a global problem that urges researchers to develop new technologies aimed at environmental restoration. Here, this study aimed at obtaining an activated biochar from pequi almonds for dye removal. Before and after adsorption, the materials underwent characterization using techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis (TG). The biochar from the pequi almond was called BA, and the activated biochar from the pequi almond was called ABA. The influence of the pH, contact time, and adsorbate concentration on adsorption was investigated using the dye methylene blue. The morphological assessment revealed higher cracks and pores in the ABA than in the BA. The TG showed that the BA lost approximately 19% more mass than the ABA, indicating that activation occurred. The activation contributed to the decrease in the degree of disorder in the BA because of the increased number of graphitic carbon atoms (ordered) in the ABA, as observed via Raman. The adsorption kinetics followed a pseudo-second-order model, while the adsorption isotherms followed the Langmuir model. The BA adsorption capacity was 500.00 mg g−1, constituting a robust solution for dye removal from aqueous environments. Therefore, this implies the success of the process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Rapid industrial development has led to the use of numerous dyes responsible for significant water pollution worldwide. Adsorbents have been developed to treat these waters, mainly in the form of activated biochar, which has several advantages, one of which is its good surface characteristics, such as high surface area and pore volume. The objective of the investigation was to analyze the efficiency of removing the methylene blue model dye in aqueous solutions through the adsorption process using biochar chemically activated from the leaf and stem of water hyacinth (Eichhornio crassipes) as a bioadsorbent. This study carbonized the stem and leaf containing zinc chloride at 600 °C. The materials were characterized by different techniques and were tested for their ability to adsorb methylene blue. The activated stem and leaf biochars removed approximately 285.71 and 322.58 mg g−1 of the dye, respectively, indicating that the adsorption is more significant in the leaf. Pseudo-second-order kinetics was the most suitable model to describe dye adsorption on biochars, and the experimental isotherm data fit the Langmuir model. Abstract

Background. Tissue engineering has been shown to exhibit great potential for the creation of biomaterials capable of developing into functional tissues. Cellular expansion and integration depends on the quality and surface-determinant factors of the scaffold, which are required for successful biological implants. The objective of this research was to characterize and evaluate the in vitro characteristics of rabbit bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) associated with a bacterial cellulose membrane (BCM). We assessed the adhesion, expansion, and integration of the biomaterial as well as its ability to induce macrophage activation. Finally, we evaluated the cytotoxicity and toxicity of the BCM. Methods. Samples of rabbit bone marrow were collected. Mesenchymal stem cells were isolated from medullary aspirates to establish fibroblast colony-forming unit assays. Osteogenic, chondrogenic, and adipogenic differentiation was performed. Integration with the BCM was assessed by scanning electron microscopy at 1, 7, and 14 days. Cytotoxicity was assessed via the production of nitric oxide, and BCM toxicity was assessed with the MTT assay; phagocytic activity was also determined. Results. The fibroblastoid colony-forming unit (CFU-F) assay showed cells with a fibroblastoid morphology organized into colonies, and distributed across the culture area surface. In the growth curve, two distinct phases, lag and log phase, were observed at 15 days. Multipotentiality of the cells was evident after induction of osteogenic, chondrogenic, and adipogenic lineages. Regarding the BM-MSCs’ bioelectrical integration with the BCM, BM-MSCs were anchored in the BCM in the first 24 h. On day 7 of culture, the cytoplasm was scattered, and on day 14, the cells were fully integrated with the biomaterial. We also observed significant macrophage activation; analysis of the MTT assay and the concentration of nitric oxide revealed no cytotoxicity of the biomaterial. Conclusion. The BCM allowed the expansion and biointegration of bone marrow progenitor cells with a stable cytotoxic profile, thus presenting itself as a biomaterial with potential for tissue engineering.

38. Wetting of Mono and Few-Layered WS2and MoS2Films Supported on Si/SiO2Substrates

Abstract

The recent interest and excitement in graphene has also opened up a pandora’s box of other two-dimensional (2D) materials and material combinations which are now beginning to come to the fore. One family of these emerging 2D materials is transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). So far there is very limited understanding on the wetting behavior of “monolayer” TMD materials. In this study, we synthesized large-area, continuous monolayer tungsten disulfide (WS2) and molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) films on SiO2/Si substrates by the thermal reduction and sulfurization of WO3and MO3thin films. The monolayer TMD films displayed an advancing water contact angle of ∼83° as compared to ∼90° for the bulk material. We also prepared bilayer and trilayer WS2films and studied the transition of the water contact angle with increasing number of layers. The advancing water contact angle increased to ∼85° for the bilayer and then to ∼90° for the trilayer film. Beyond three layers, there was no significant change in the measured water contact angle. This type of wetting transition indicates that water interacts to some extent with the underlying silica substrate through the monolayer TMD sheet. The experimentally observed wetting transition with numbers of TMD layers lies in-between the predictions of one continuum model that considers only van der Waals attractions and another model that considers only dipole–dipole interactions. We also explored wetting as a function of aging. A clean single-layer WS2film (without airborne contaminants) was shown to be strongly hydrophilic with an advancing water contact angle of ∼70°. However, over time, the sample ages as hydrocarbons and water present in air adsorb onto the clean WS2sheet. After ∼7 days, the aging process is completed and the advancing water contact angle of the aged single-layer WS2film stabilizes at ∼83°. These results suggest that clean (i.e., nonaged) monolayer TMDs are hydrophilic materials. We further show that substitution of sulfur atoms by oxygen in the lattice of aged monolayer WS2and MoS2films can be used to generate well-defined ‘hydrophobic–hydrophilic’ patterns that preferentially accumulate and create microdrop arrays on the surface during water condensation and evaporation experiments.
