An accurate description of the surface elevation of the Earth is of fundamental importance to many branches of Earth science. A number of working groups have considered the characteristics of the available digital topographic data base and found that there are significant deficiencies in available topographic data that severly limit existing and potential new scientific applications.

The preliminary analysis of the C-band cross-track interferometric data (XTI) acquired during the MAC Europe 1991 campaign over the Matera test site, in Southern Italy is presented. Twenty three passive calibrators (Corner Reflector, CR) and 3 active calibrators (Active Radar Calibrator, ARC) were deployed over an area characterized by homogeneous background. Contemporaneously to the flight, a ground truth data collection campaign was carried out. The research activity was focused on the development of motion compensation algorithms, in order to improve the height measurement accuracy of the TOPSAR system.

This paper investigates the dynamics and acceleration levels of a new tethered system for micro- and variable-gravity applications. The system consists of two platforms tethered on opposite sides to the Space Station. A fourth platform, the elevator, is placed in between the Space Station and the upper platform. Variable-g levels on board the elevator are obtained by moving this facility along the upper tether, while microgravity experiments are carried out on board the Space Station. By controlling the length of the lower tether the position of the system center of mass can be maintained on board the Space Station despite variations of the system's distribution of mass. The paper illustrates the mathematical model, the environmental perturbations and the control techniques which have been adopted for the simulation and control of the system dynamics. Two sets of results from two different simulation runs are shown. The first set shows the system dynamics and the acceleration spectra on board the Space Station and the elevator during station-keeping. The second set of results demonstrates the capability of the elevator to attain a preselected g-level.

The Tether Elevator/Crawler System (TECS) consists of two end platforms tethered to opposite sides of the Space Station. A variable gravity laboratory is located on board an elevator which can crawl along the upper tether. This paper analyzes the elevator's attitude dynamics in order to evaluate its effect on microgravity applications. To this end, a simulation model is described and numerical results are given for a steady state case. It is shown that the elevator attitude dynamics, without attitude control, contributes additional spectral lines to the acceleration noise.

The application of the Tethered Satellite (TS) as an operational remote sensing platform is studied. It represents a new platform capable of covering the altitudes between airplanes and free flying satellites, offering an adequate lifetime, high geometric and radiometric resolution and improved cartographic accuracy. Two operational remote sensing missions are proposed: one using two linear array systems for along track stereoscopic observation and one using a synthetic aperture radar combined with an interferometric technique. These missions are able to improve significantly the accuracy of future real time cartographic systems from space, also allowing, in the case of active microwave systems, the Earth's observation both in adverse weather and at any time, day or night. Furthermore, a simulation program is described in which, in order to examine carefully the potentiality of the TS as a new remote sensing platform, the orbital and attitude dynamics description of the TSS is integrated with the sensor viewing geometry, the Earth's ellipsoid, the atmospheric effects, the Sun illumination and the digital elevation model. A preliminary experiment has been proposed which consist of a metric camera to be deployed downwards during the second Shuttle demonstration flight.

The exploitation of the present tethered system and the need for repeat missions; multiple payloads placed along the tether; the extension of the present altitude limit to below 130 km; the development of free-flying tether satellites for studying both the Earth's atmosphere and ionosphere and also for studying the plantes; and a subtether were discussed. Areas of research were identified: aeronomy studies, gravity and magnetic potential mission, advanced sensors for geodynamics, and mapping and remote sensing.
