Ratings of psychiatric inpatients by members of their families at admission were validated against ratings by hospital personnel and patients' self-ratings. There were low, but statistically significant, relationships across data sources, but there were also systematic differences in regard to what symptom areas were measured most validly and what was regarded as most pathological by each data source. Ward-based ratings were most effective at rating conceptual disturbance and regarded schizophrenics as showing the most pathology. Family raters were most effective at rating hostile, belligerent behavior and regarded the miscellaneous group of acting out disorders as most disturbed. Patients' ratings fell between these two data sources but tended to stress anxiety and depression.

College students (N= 37) who volunteered to participate in sensitivity training groups were compared on a number of measures of psychological adjustment with a random sample (N= 40) of those who did not volunteer to participate. Subjects were administered the Mini-Mult form of the MMPI, the MMPI Social Introversion scale, the Beck Depression Inventory, a problem checklist, and a questionnaire dealing with history of, and treatment for, mental and emotional problems. Statistical analyses indicated no significant differences between volunteers and nonvolunteers on any of the indices of psychological adjustment.

149 psychiatric patients were rated by members of their families, using the Katz Adjustment Scale. The validity of these ratings was assessed against entrance diagnosis, global ratings of pathology by patient, nurse, and psychiatric resident, and standard ward- and self-ratings. The family ratings had validity levels comparable to ward- and self-ratings.

This study investigated the behavioral correlates of the Paranoia scale of the MMPI. Behavior ratings were made on 112 psychiatric patients using the Hostile Belligerence and Paranoid Projection scales from the Psychotic Inpatient Profile. Product-moment correlations obtained were not statistically significant. Analyses testing an hypothesized curvilinear relationship between Paranoia scale scores and paranoid symptomatology also were not statistically significant.

Validity data on the Psychotic Inpatient Profile (PIP), a revision of the Psychotic Reaction Profile, were obtained by comparing ratings of closed- (locked) ward versus open-ward patients and admissions versus releases. Discriminant analyses differentiated the groups in each comparison at the .01 level. Correct classification was obtained for 84.2% of the patients in the closed versus open comparison and for 75.5% in the admissions versus releases comparison. Univariate tests indicated that all 12 PIP scales discriminated between groups in the expected direction in at least one of the two comparisons made.
