Land use changes from native vegetation to agriculture, livestock grazing, and urban development are among the main problems related to biodiversity loss worldwide. In this paper we evaluate how land use changes (eucalypt plantation and pasture) affect the richness and assemblage of wasps (Braconidae, Ichneumonidae, Pompilidae, and Vespidae), in comparison with nearby areas with native vegetation in the Cerrado. Specimens were collected at six points, with two Malaise traps at each location. The collections were performed monthly for 10 d, for 12 mo. A total of 773 hymenopterans of the selected groups were collected, representing 253 species or morphospecies. Richness of the families Ichneumonidae and Pompilidae between the areas did not present significant differences. For the families Braconidae and Vespidae, the richness was greater in the eucalypt plantation and pasture areas compared to the native area. Species composition in the native habitat was different from either of the managed habitats in the studied environment. Furthermore, the composition of wasps in native areas varied less throughout the sampling campaigns when compared with the pasture and eucalyptus sites. In native areas, 85 exclusive morphospecies were found. Thus, changes in land use may cause changes in the composition of wasp species, since areas with native vegetation presented more heterogeneous and stable environments than the other land uses. The maintenance of native areas, even if close to planted forest and/or pasture areas, could be the best way to combine forest productivity with biodiversity conservation.

The egg parasitoid Telenomus remus (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae) has been investigated for classical and applied biological control of noctuid pests, especially Spodoptera (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) species. Although T. remus was introduced into Brazil over three decades ago for classical biological control of S. frugiperda, this wasp has not been recorded as established in corn or soybean crops. We used an integrative approach to identify T. remus, combining a taxonomic key based on the male genitalia with DNA barcoding, using a cytochrome c oxidase subunit I mitochondrial gene fragment. This is the first report of natural parasitism of T. remus on S. frugiperda and S. cosmioides eggs at two locations in Brazil. We also confirmed that the T. remus lineage in Brazil derives from a strain in Venezuela (originally from Papua New Guinea and introduced into the Americas, Africa, and Asia). The occurrence of T. remus parasitizing S. frugiperda and S. cosmioides eggs in field conditions, not associated with inundative releases, suggests that the species has managed to establish itself in the field in Brazil. This opens possibilities for future biological control programs, since T. remus shows good potential for mass rearing and egg parasitism of important agricultural pests such as Spodoptera species.

The Aleiodes bakeri (Brues) species subgroup of the A. seriatus species group is defined based on two previously described species, A. bakeri and A. nigristemmaticum (Enderlein), and is greatly expanded in this paper with an identification key, descriptions, and illustrations of 18 new species from the Neotropical Region: A. andinus Shaw & Shimbori, sp. nov.; angustus Shimbori & Shaw, sp. nov.; asenjoi Shimbori & Shaw, sp. nov.; bahiensis Shimbori & Shaw, sp. nov.; barrosi Shimbori & Shaw, sp. nov.; brevicarina Shimbori & Shaw, sp. nov.; coariensis Shimbori & Shaw, sp. nov.; goiasensis Shimbori & Shaw, sp. nov.; gonodontivorus Shaw & Shimbori, sp. nov.; hyalinus Shimbori & Shaw, sp. nov.; inga Shimbori & Shaw, sp. nov.; joaquimi Shimbori & Shaw, sp. nov.; lidiae Shimbori & Shaw, sp. nov.; mabelae Shimbori & Shaw, sp. nov.; maculosus Shimbori & Shaw, sp. nov.; ovatus Shimbori & Shaw, sp. nov.; santarosensis Shaw & Shimbori, sp. nov.; and taurus Shimbori & Penteado-Dias, sp. nov. It is hypothesized that the A. bakeri species subgroup is a monophyletic lineage within the larger and probably artificial A. seriatus species group (those Aleiodes with a comb of flat setae at the apex of the hind tibia), and can be distinguished from other members of the seriatus group by having the hind wing vein r present, although weakly indicated; the hind wing marginal cell suddenly widened at junction of veins RS and r; the subbasal cell of the fore wing mostly glabrous but often with two rows of short setae subapically; glabrous regions of the wings also commonly found in the first subdiscal, discal, and basal cells of the fore wing, and the basal cell of hind wing; ocelli quite large, with the width of a lateral ocellus being distinctly larger than the ocellar-ocular distance; and being relatively large Aleiodes species with body almost entirely brownish yellow or reddish brown. In addition, a new replacement name, Aleiodes buntikae Shimbori & Shaw, nom. nov., is proposed for the species formerly called Aleiodes (Hemigyroneuron) bakeri Butcher & Quicke, 2011.

Orientador: Stephen Hyslo Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Faculdade de Ciencias Medicas Resumo: Peçonhas de vespas são capazes de produzir uma variedade de efeitos biológicos, tais como dor, edema, hipotensão, hepatotoxicidade e reações alérgicas. Com a exceção da peçonha da abelha Apis mellifera e de algumas (poucas) espécies de vespas sociais, as peçonhas de himenópteros brasileiros têm sido pouco estudadas. Neste trabalho, caracterizamos farmacologicamente as atividades nas peçonhas de três espécies de vespas sociais da família Vespidae (Polybia chrysothorax, Pseudopolybia compressa e Polybia rejecta) e duas espécies de hábitos solitários, da família Scoliidae, do gênero Pypper (pypper sp. 1 e Pypper sp. 2), todas da região nordeste do Brasil. Especificamente, avaliamos a atividade sobre músculo liso (íleo isolado de cobaia), a cardiotoxicidade em coração semi-isolado de barata, e a ação sobre neurotransmissão em nervo sensorial de crustáceo (siri azul, Callinectes danae) e em junção neuromuscular (preparação nervo frênico-diaftagmo) de camundongo. As peçonhas das três espécies sociais contraíram o íleo isolado de cobaia na faixa de 0.001-100 ~g/ml (dependendo da peçonha), com CEso de 0,25 :t 0,05 ~g/ml, 8,75 :t 1,25 ~g/ml e 7,65 :t 1,85 ~g/ml, (média:!:EPM, 1=4) para Polybia chrysothorax, Polybia rejecta e Pseudopolybia compressa, respectivamente. As peçonhas do gênero Pypper eram inativos neste tecido. A pré-incubação dos tecidos com atropina (antagonista dos receptores muscarínicos, 10 J.1M), metisergida (antagonista dos receptores 5-HT2 da serotonina, 10 JlM), e pirilamina (antagonista dos receptores HI da histamina, 10 f.lM) inibiu a atividade contrátil das três peçonhas sociais enquanto que o Hoe-140 (antagonista dos receptores B2 da bradicinina, 1 JlM) não afetou as respostas. Estes resultados indicam que as peçonhas sociais contêm aminas biogênicas (acetilcolina, histamina e serotonina) mas são destituídas de cininas. As três peçonhas (1-100 ~g) mostraram atividade cardiotóxica em coração semi-isolado de barata, sendo que as mais potentes foram P. chrysothorax e P. compressa; as peçonhas do gênero Pypper eram inativas nesta preparação. A investigação dos possíveis mecanismos responsáveis por este efeito através do uso de antagonistas/inibidores indicou que não houve envolvimento de aminas das peçonhas e que a causa mais provável era uma atuação a nível de canais iônicos, especialmente os de sódio e, em grau menor, os de potássio. A dosagem da atividade fosfolipásica das peçonhas mostrou a seguinte ordem de potência: P. chrysothorax/P. compressa> P. rejecta » Pypper spp., porém esta atividade parece contribuir pouco para os efeitos observados uma vez que a indometacina apenas retardou o início da cardiotoxicidade. Na neurotransmissão, as peçonhas de P. chrysothorax e P. compressa (100 Jlg cada) aumentaram a atividade elétrica espontânea (disparo de potenciais de ação) do nervo sensorial de crustáceo de forma semelhante ao efeito causado pela brevetoxina (10-6 M), uma toxina marinha que age no mecanismo de portão do canal de sódio. As peçonhas também inibiram o potencial de ação do nervo em experimentos de "sucrose gap", efeito este que foi abolido pela tetrodotoxina (10-6 M), bloqueador de canais de sódio voltagem-dependentes. Nestes experimentos, as peçonhas de P. rejecta e do gênero Pypper eram inativas. As peçonhas das duas espécies sociais P. chrysothorax e P. compressa (25-100 Jlg/rnl), mas não da social P. rejecta e das solitárias, inhibiram da neurotransmissão em preparações nervo fTênico-diaftagmo de camundongo (tempo para bloqueio de 50% da resposta contrátil: 40 :!: 5 min (n= 3) e 57 :!: 3 min (n= 3), respectivamente, na concentração de 100 Jlg/rnl). Esta inibição era irreversível por lavagem das preparações. As peçonhas sociais também despolarizaram a membrana da fibra muscular e da placa terminal da junção neuromuscular. Estes achados sugerem uma ação pós-sináptica com possível envolvimento pré-sináptico. As três peçonhas produziram alterações morfológicas no músculo do diaftagma compatíveis com a nuonecrose e correlacionada à sua atividade fosfolipásica. O ftacionamento das peçonhas de P. chrysothorax e P. compressa por HPLC em coluna de fase reversa CI8 resultou em vários picos. O principal destes da peçonha de P. chrysothorax foi seqüenciado. A seqüênciaobtida (ARSLLEGLGIRRGSA), indicou que o peptídeo pertence à família de peptídeos conhecidos como pompilitodotoxinas (pMTX), a qual contém duas isoformas, a-PMTX e J3-PMTX, purificados das peçonhas das vespas solitárias Anoplius samariensis e Batozonellus maculifrons, respectivamente. Esta toxina reproduziu a cardiotoxicidade em coração de barata e o bloqueio de neurotransmissão em crustáceos observados para a peçonha de P. chrysothorax. Os resultados deste estudo indicam que as peçonhas investigadas possuem várias atividades biológicas. A demonstração de que as ações cardio e neurotóxicas da peçonha de P. chrysothorax eram devidas em grande parte à presença de uma isoforma de PMTXs sugere que peçonhas de espécies de vespas sociais podem servir de fontes para moléculas com potencial utilidade como inseticidas Abstract: Wasp venoms produce a variety of biological effects, including pain, edema, hypotension, hepatotoxicity and allergic reactions. With the exception of bee (Apis mellifera) venom and of a few wasp species, little is known of the toxinology of Brazilian hymenopterans. In this work, we examined the pharmacological activities of venom trom three species of social wasps (Polybia chrysothorax, Pseudopolybia compressa and Polybia rejecta, family Vespidae) and two species of solitary wasps of the genus Pypper (family Scoliidae) found in northeastern Brazil. Specifically, we evaluated the activity on smooth muscle (guinea pig isolated ileum), the cardiotoxicity in cockroach semi-isolated heart, and the action on neurotransmission in crustacean (Callinectes danae, blue crab) sensorial nerve and in mouse phrenic nerve-diaphragm preparations. The venoms ofthe three social species (0.001-100 ~glml, depending on the venom) contracted guinea pig isolated ileum, with ECso of 0.25 ~0.05 ~glrnl, 8.75 :t 1.25 ~glrnl and 7.65 :t 1.85 Ilglrnl (mean~SEM, n=4) for P. chrysothorax, P. rejecta and P. compressa, respectively. The venoms of the two species of Pypper were inactive in this tissue. Pre incubating the tissues with atropine (antagonist of muscarinic receptors, 1 O ~, methysergide (antagonist of serotonin 5-HT 2 receptors, 1 O ~, and pyrilamine (antagonist of histamine HI receptors, 1 O ~ inhibited the contractile activity of the three social venoms, whereas Hoe-140 (antagonist of bradykinin B2 receptors, 1 ~ had no effect on the responses. These results indicate that the social wasp venoms contained amines (acetylcholine, histamine and serotonin) but not kinins. The three venoms (1-100 Jlg) showed cardiotoxicity in cockroach semi-isolated heart, with the most potent being P. chrysothorax and P. compressa; the venoms of the genus Pypper were inactive in this preparation. Investigation of the mechanisms responsible for this effect based on the use of antagonists/inhibitors indicated that there was no contribution by venom amines and that the most probab1e cause was an action involving ion channels, especially sodium channels and, to a lesser degree, potassium channels. The venoms showed the following order of potency for their phospholipase A activity: P. chrysothorax/P. compresas> P. rejecta » Pypper spp. However, this activity contributed little to the observed effects since indomethacin only delayed the cardiotoxicity but did not abolish it. The- venoms of P. chrysothorax and P. compressa (100 Jlg each) increased the spontaneous electrical activity of crustacean sensorial nerve in a manner similar to that observe.d with brevetoxin (5xtO.7 M), a marine toxin that affects thegating mechanism of voltage-dependent sodium channels. These venoms also inhibited sensory nerve action potentials in sucrose gap experiments. This effect was abolished by tetrodotoxin (10-6 M), a blocker of voltage-dependent sodium channels. The venoms of P. rejecta and of the genus Pypper-were inactive in this preparation. The venom of the three social species (25-100 Jlglml), but not the solitary species, inhibited. neurotransmission in mouse phrenic nerve-diaphragm preparations (the time- for 50% blockade of the contractile responses was 40 j: 5 min and 57 j: 3 min for P. chrysothorax and P. compressa, respectively, at 100 Jlglml; n=3 each). This inhibition was irreversible by washing the preparations. The social wasp venoms also depolarized the muscle fiber membrane and tOO terminal endplate of neuromuscular junctions. These observations suggested a possible postsynaptic action for the venoms, with some presynaptic involvement. The three social venoms also produced morphologica1 alterations in muscle that were compatible- with myonecrosis. The- leveI of this damage- correlated with the venom PLA2 activity. The tractionation of P. chrysothorax and P. compressa venoms by RP-HPLC on a CI8 column resulted in several peaks. The main peak of P. chrysothorax venom was sequenced. The sequence obtaine-d (ARSLLEGLGIRRGSA) indicated that the peptide belonged to the family of peptides known as pompilidotoxinas (PMTX), which contains two isoforms, a-PMTX and Jj-PMTX, purified of the venoms of the- soltary wasps Anoplius samariensis and Batozonellus maculifrons, respectively. This toxin reproduced the cardiotoxicity in cockroach heart and the blockade of neurotransmisson in crustacean nerves seen with P. chrysothorax venom. The results of this study indicate that the venoms investigate-d had several biological activities. The demonstration that the cardio- and neurotoxicity of P. chrysothorax venom were largely attributable to the presence of a novel isoform of PMTXs suggests that venom social wasp of species may serve as a source of molecules with potential usefulness as insecticides Mestrado Mestre em Farmacologia

No Brasil, a ecologia das figueiras é pouco conhecida. o presente trabalho foi desenvolvido na Reserva de Santa Genebra, Estado de São Paulo, e aspectos da fenologia, polinização, dispersão, predação e germinação das sementes de três espécies de Ficus foram estudados. A floração nas três espécies é assincrônica e não está correlacionada a fatores ambientais tais como pluviosidade e temperatura. A polinização foi feita por vespas Peaoscapus sp., e outros microhimenópteros que utilizaram os sicônios não atuaram como polinizadores. A dispersão das sementes foi feita por frugívoros generalistas. sendo que alguns vertebrados e insetos atuaram como predadores de sementes. As condições básicas para a germinação das sementes das figueiras foram luz, umidade constante e presença de microorganismos. As figueiras são imprescindíveis para a sobrevivência de espécies diretamente relacionadas aos sicônios, como as vespas de figo. Além disso, os sicônios constituem fonte alimentar para vertebrados frugívoros, predadores de sementes especializados e predadores de vespas de figo. A manutenção da população de figueiras na Reserva de Santa Genebra provavelmente será possível a longo prazo se forem implementados programas de manejo de suas populações Abstract: The study of the reproductive biology of figs (Ficus spp. ) is recent and in Brazil the ecology of fig pollination is little known. This study was done at "Reserva de Santa Genebra" southeastern Brazil and the phenology pollination dispersion predation and germination of the seeds of three fig species were studied. The flowering of the species was asynchronic and was not correlated with environmental factors such as temperature and pluviosity. The pollination of fig flowers were done by the wasp Pegoscapus sp. Other fig wasps inhabited the syconia but they did not pollinate the flowers. The dispersion of the seeds was done by generalist frugivores. Some vertebrates and insects predated fig seeds. The factors influencing germination were light humidity and microorganisms. The figs are important to the survivorship of several animal species that utilize syconia. Orientador: George John Shepherd Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Biologia Resumo: O presente trabalho tem como objetivo esclarecer questões básicas sobre a biologia reprodutiva da sete espécies de Oxypetalum (O. alpinum var. alpinum. O.appendiculatum, O. banksii subsp. Banksii, O. jacobinae, O mexiae, O.pachyglossum e O. subriparium ) no município de Viçosa Zona da Mata do Estado de Minas Gerais, sudeste brasileiro. O trabalho foi realizado ao longo dos anos de 1994 a 1997, em nove locais. As espécies são simpátricas exceto O. mexiae e florescem ao longo do ano, exeto O. jacobine que floresce de fevereiro a junho, e O. subriparium, que floresce de novembro a julho. As flores são longevas e duram, em média, cerca de oito a 25 dias. O. banksii subsp. banksii apresenta características de mortologia e biologia floral ainda não mencionadas para a família Asclepiadaceae, como por exemplo, a presença de "compitum extrapistilar". Nova proposta é apresentada sobre a localização do estigma. O néctar é o recurso procurado pelos visitantes florais e acumula-se dentro do tubo floral. Vários atributos florais guiam o aparelho bucal dos insetos dentro da flor, contribuindo para que ocorra remoção e inserção de polínias. As espécies apresentam flores com, principalmente, um ou dois polinários removidos e uma câmara estigmatífera polinizada por flor ...Observação: O resumo, na íntegra, poderá ser visualizado no texto completo da tese digital Abstract: This study investigated basic aspects of reproductive biology in seven species of Oxypetalum (O. alpinum var. alpinum, O. appendiculatum, O. banksii subsp. banksii, O. jacobinae, O. mexiae, O. pachyglossum e O. subriparium) in the municipalityof Viçosa, Minas Gerais State, in south-east Brazil. Field work was carried out frem 1994 to 1997 in nine individual sites. Ali of the species, except O. mexiae, are sympatric and flower throughout the year, except O. jacobinae, which flower from February to June, and O. subriparium, which flower from November to July. The flowers are long-lived, lasting on average from 8 to 25 days. O. banksii subsp. banksii showed a number of features of morphology and floral biology not previously noted for Asclepiadaceae, such as the presence of an "extrapistilar compitum". New proposals are made for stigma localization. Nectar is the resource used by floral visitors and it accumulates inside the floral tube. Several morphological features guide the mouthparts of the insects within the flower, ensuring removal and insertion of the pollinia. Most of the species commonly showed one or two pollinia removed per flower and one pollinated stigmatic chamber. Pollinations normally consist of a single pollinium inserted into the stigmatic chamber, but in O. appendiculatum two pollinia from the same pollinarium were commonly found. Orientador : Silvia das Graças Pompolo Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Biologia Resumo: Das 13 espécies de Trypoxylon com número cromossômico conhecido, somente T. albitarse possui cromossomos B, os quais são totalmente heterocromáticos e podem apresentar-se em dois tipos morfológicamente distintos, um metacêntrico e um acrocêntrico. Ao longo dos últimos cinco anos (1996 a 2000), 1003 espécimens de T. albitarse provenientes de 692 ninhos foram estudados citogeneticamente com relação à ocorrência, distribuição, frequência e evolução de seus cromossomos B e muitos destes indivíduos foram submetidos às técnicas de hibridação in situ fluorescente (FISH) ou impregnação por nitrato de prata para localização dos genes ribossômicos e estudo dos nucléolos, respectivamente. Todos os espécimens analisados foram obtidos em diferentes populações naturais na Zona da Mata Mineira, das quais 11 estão localizadas no município de Viçosa (Amoras, Campus, Centro, Marrecos, Palmital, Paraíso, Silvestre, Vila Cristal, Vila Chaves, Fundão e Barrinha), duas no município de Cajuri (Cajuri e Arraial Paraguai), uma no município de Coimbra (Coimbra), uma no município de Porto Firme (Nova Ilha) e uma no município de Piranga (piranga). Com exceção da populaçao de "Centro", as oito primeiras populações de Viçosa e a população de Porto Firme foram amostradas em dois intervalos de tempo diferentes (1996-1998 e 1998-2002), enquanto as populações dos municípios de Cajuri, Coimbra e Piranga, assim como as populações viçosences de Fundao e Barrinha, foram estudadas apenas na segundo amostragem. Os resultados obtidos na primeira etapa de coletas revelaram que, em maior ou menor freqüência, todas as populações analisadas possuem cromossomos B. Entre as populações de Viçosa, a grande maioria das fêmeas e machos analisados portaram um cromos somo B por genoma haplóide, ou seja, a mesma dosagem dos cromossomos do complemento A. Por outro lado, na única população analisada em Porto Firme, somente 14.3% dos indivíduos apresentaram cromossomos B. Considerando que uma das principais características dos cromossomos B é seu modo de transmissão não-mendeliano, a possibilidade de que, em Viçosa, os cromos somos B de T. albitarse estivessem regularizando seu comportamento meiótico e, conseqüentemente, alcançando sua estabilização como um membro normal do complemento cromossômico, foi postulada. Na tentativa de testar esta hipótese, o processo de estabilização dos cromossomos B foi estatisticamente quantificado em todas as populações analisadas. Em Porto Firme, o índice de estabilização (SI) dos B foi bastante baixo, indicando uma invasão recente. Não obstante, em Viçosa, o SI foi igual a 100% em três diferentes populações, onde todos os indivíduos portavam um B por genoma haplóide e indicou uma forte tendência à estabilização dos B nas demais populações. Um estudo comparativo desses dados com os obtidos no seguinte período de amostragem forneceram evidências diretas do processo invasivo dos B em Porto Firme, onde a frequência de Bs aumentou drasticamente. Entretanto em Viçosa, a despeito do aumento em frequência do tipo metacêntrico e da significativa reduçao do tipo acrocêntrico em várias populações, a frequência geral de cromossomos B permaneceu estável. As novas populações analisadas, mostraram uma frequência de Bs e parametros de estabilidade semelhantes aos observados em Viçosa, indicando que se encontram em um estágio evolutivo similar, com a maioria dos indivíduos portando um cromos somo B por genoma haplóide e altos valores de SI. A técnica de FISH com sonda de rDNA não revelou a presença de genes ribossômicos nos cromos somos B, não obstante, demonstrou que, em T. albitarse, os genes ribossômicos estão localizados em toda extensão do braço heterocromático do cromossomo 14. Embora a técnica de impregnação por prata não tenha sido efetiva na localização cromossômica da NOR ativa, foi aplicada com bastante exito na quantificação da atividade nucleolar nos núcleos interfásicos de machos e fêmeas de T. albitarse, mostrando que, a despeito da grande variabilidade no tamanho do 'braço ribossômico' em machos e fêmeas dessa espécie, a atividade nuc1eolar é proporcional ao nível de ploidia dos indivíduos Abstract: Among the 13 cytogenetica1ly analysed species of Trypoxylon genus, only T. albitarse possess B chromosomes. Two types morphologically distinct of B chromosomes have been found in this wasp, one metacentric and other acrocentric, which are totally heterochromatic. Over the last five years (1996 the 2000), 1003 specimens of T. albitarse obtained from 692 nests, had been cytogenetically studied with respect to the occurrence, distribution, frequency and evolution of its B chromosomes. Many of these individuals had been subjected to techniques of fluorescent in situ hybridisation (FISH) or silver nitrate staining for location of ribosomal genes and nucleoli, respectively. All analysed individuals were collected in different natural populations in the Zona da Mata Mineira (Minas Gerais State, Brazil), of which 11 are located in the city of Viçosa (Amoras, Campus, Centro, Marrecos, Palmital, Paraíso, Silvestre, Vila. Cristal, Villa Chaves, Fundão and Barrinha), two in the city of Cajuri (Cajuri and Arraial Paraguai), one in the city of Coimbra (Coimbra), one in the city of Porto Firme (Nova Ilha) and one in the city of Piranga (piranga). Besides the Centro population, the eight first populations from Viçosa and the population of Porto Firme were sampled twice (1996-1998 and 1998-2002), while the populations located in Cajuri, Coimbra and Piranga, as well as Fundao and Barrinha (Viçosa), were studied only included in the second sampling. The results observed in the first stage of collections have revealed that, although in different frequency, all analysed populations possess B chromosomes. Among the Viçosa's populations, most bore females and males carried a B chromosome per haploid genome, the same dosage of standard (A) chromosomes. On the other hand, in Porto Firme, only 14.3% of individuals carried B chromosomes. Because one of the most conspicuous features of B chromosomes is their non-mendelian transmission mode, we hypothesized that at least in Viçosa, the B chromosomes of T. albitarse were regularizing their meiotic behaviour and, consequently, reaching their stabilization as a normal member of the normal chromosomal complement. To test this hypothesis, the stabilization process of B chromosomes was statistically quantified in all populations. In Porto Firme, the stabilization index (SI) of the B was sufficiently low, indicating a recent invasion. On the other hand populations from Viçosa carried a B per haploid genome, the SI value was equal to 100% while the other populations indicated a strong trend toward the stabilization of B chromosomes. A comparative analysis performed with both set of data (obtained in the first and second period of sampling) had supplied direct evidences of the invasive process of B in Porto Firme, where the B frequency has increased significantly. However in Viçosa, in spite of the increase in the metacentric B frequency and the significant reduction, in some populations, in the acrocentric B frequency, the general frequency of B chromosomes remained stable. The additional populations sampled showed B frequency and stability parameters similar to these observed in the Viçosa region, indicating that they are in a similar evolutionary stage, with most individuals carrying one B per haploid genome and high SI values. Fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) showed all ribosomal genes located in the heterochromatic arm of chromosome 14. The silver impregnation method was successfully applied in the nuc1eolar activity quantification of interfasic nuc1ei in males and females of T. albitarse. Adicionalmente, algumas vespas e formigas utilizam sua peçonha para imobilizar ou matar a presa. Neste estudo analisamos as atividades fosfolipásica (PLA2) e hemolítica bem como a atividade biológica sobre íleo e átrio isolados de rato, e sobre coração semi-isolado de barata, das peçonhas de formiga (Paraponera clavata) e vespa (Polistes lanio lanio). A eletroforese das peçonhas (SDS-PAGE) revelou a presença de componentes com massas moleculares de ~22 kDa a 100 kDa em P. clavata e de 19 a 119 kDa em P. l. lanio. Já a cromatografia por gel filtração resultou em cinco picos principais para a peçonha de P. clavata e seis para a de P. l. lanio. A peçonha de P. clavata possuiu atividades PLA2 e hemolítica moderadas, que foram abolidas pelo aquecimento (100ºC, 20 min). A peçonha de P. clavata (0,1-3 ?g/ml) contraiu íleo isolado de rato, cujo efeito foi dessensibilizante e resistente ao aquecimento da peçonha. Esta atividade contraturante foi localizada no primeiro pico do perfil de eluição da cromatografia por gel filtração. Em átrio isolado de rato a peçonha de P. clavata (0,125-10 ?g/ml) causou contratura, resultando em diminuição da força contrátil e redução na freqüência atrial com aumento na liberação de creatinoquinase-MB (CK-MB) tecidual. O aquecimento da peçonha não aboliu esta ação atrial. A análise histopatológica mostrou necrose dos cardiomiócitos que não foi afetada pelo aquecimento. Dos picos obtidos por gel filtração, o pico 1 reproduziu a contratura causada pela peçonha enquanto o pico 3 aumentou a contratilidade atrial. Em coração semi-isolado de barata, a peçonha de P. clavata (1-100 ?g) causou bradicardia. Conclui-se que a peçonha de P. clavata: (1) possui atividades PLA2 e hemolítica que são termolábeis, (2) causa bradicardia em coração semi-isolado de barata, e (3) provoca contração em íleo isolado e contratura em átrio direito de rato. Ao contrário de P. clavata, a peçonha de P. l. lanio (0,3-100 ?g/ml) mostrou altas atividades PLA2 e hemolítica que também foram abolidas pelo aquecimento (100ºC, 20 min). A peçonha contraiu íleo isolado de rato, e causou inotropismo negativo em átrio direito isolado de rato, sem afetar o cronotropismo; não houve contratura da linha basal. A peçonha causou forte bradicardia em coração semi-isolado de barata que não foi abolido pelo aquecimento (100ºC, 20 min). In the highly eusocial wasp, Vespula vulgaris, queens produce honest signals to alert their subordinate workers of their fertility status, and therefore they are reproductively suppressed and help in the colony. The honesty of the queen signals is likely maintained due to hormonal regulation, which affects fertility and fertility cue expression. Here, we tested if hormonal pleiotropy could support the hypothesis that juvenile hormone controls fertility and fertility signaling in workers. In addition, we aimed to check oocyte size as a proxy of fertility. To do that, we treated V. vulgaris workers with synthetic versions of juvenile hormone (JH) analogue and a JH inhibitor, methoprene and precocene, respectively. We dissected the treated females to check ovary activation and analyzed their chemical profile. Our results showed that juvenile hormone has an influence on the abundance of fertility linked compounds produced by workers, and it also showed to increase oocyte size in workers. Our results corroborate the hypothesis that juvenile hormone controls fertility and fertility signaling in workers, whereby workers are unable to reproduce without alerting other colony members of their fertility. This provides supports the hypothesis that hormonal pleiotropy contributes to keeping the queen fertility signals honest.

To estimate the effects of landscape structure on the spillover of beneficial insects we sampled predatory wasps in pairs of forest remnants and adjacent coffee plantations along a gradient of landscape composition and configuration. We used dissimilarity indices to estimate wasp spillover and we assumed that high dissimilarity means less flow (and thus less spillover) between forest and coffee habitats. We collected a total of 9847 wasps classified into 75 species and 23 genera. Wasp dissimilarity between habitats decreased with increasing forest cover in the surrounding landscape and did not respond to landscape diversity, edge density or pesticide usage. Our findings suggest that wasps forage in coffee plantations but seem to rely on forest remnants to find unmanaged nesting sites and a constant supply of resources that are not available in the agricultural matrix, and are neither in landscapes with high compositional diversity or edge density. Therefore, forest conservation and restoration should be incorporated in agro-environmental schemes designed to improve the spillover of beneficial insects and provision of ecosystem services within coffee farmlands. We study how the behavior and wing-beat frequency of hymenopteran flying insects depend on environmental conditions, such as temperature and relative humidity. We use flight data from seven bee species and two wasp species collected in Brazil in a completely non-invasive way under field conditions employing a low-cost optical sensor. With this data, we demonstrate that it is possible to accurately classify each insect species into two groups based on their flight frequency signal. The signals, however, are not the same under distinct environmental conditions. We statistically show that the bee and wasp wing-beat frequencies are significantly different, given distinct temperature and humidity ranges. This study’s findings, along with our discussion of the species’ flight activity, are crucial elements in developing intelligent methods for automatic detection, recognition, and monitoring of flying insects.

The Pantisarthrus genus is recorded for the first time from the Neotropical region and P. communis sp. nov., P. flavocingulatus sp. nov. and P. paraitinga sp. nov. are described and illustrated. A key to described species is provided.

Koinobiont parasitoids regulate the physiology of their hosts, possibly interfering with the host gut microbiota and ultimately impacting parasitoid development. We used the parasitoid Cotesia flavipes to investigate if the regulation of the host would also affect the host gut microbiota. We also wondered if the effects of parasitization on the gut microbiota would depend on the host–parasitoid association by testing the permissive Diatraea saccharalis and the non-permissive Spodoptera frugiperda hosts. We determined the structure and potential functional contribution of the gut microbiota of the fore-midgut and hindgut of the hosts at different stages of development of the immature parasitoid. The abundance and diversity of operational taxonomic units of the anteromedial (fore-midgut) gut and posterior (hindgut) region from larvae of the analyzed hosts were affected by parasitization. Changes in the gut microbiota induced by parasitization altered the potential functional contribution of the gut microbiota associated with both hosts. Our data also indicated that the mechanism by which C. flavipes interferes with the gut microbiota of the host does not require a host-parasitoid coevolutionary history. Changes observed in the potential contribution of the gut microbiota of parasitized hosts impact the host's nutritional quality, and could favor host exploitation by C. flavipes.

Chaenotetrastichus neotropicalis sp. nov. from the Atlantic Forest, Brazil, is described and illustrated. This new species is associated with a species of the pompilid wasp Auplopus Spinola (Hymenoptera: Pompilidae) and it represents the first record of the genus for the Neotropics. A key for the extant species of the genus Chaenotetrastichus Graham is also presented.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior Polybia, com 58 espécies, é o gênero de vespa social mais numeroso da tribo Epiponini, e tem uma ampla distribuição na América do Sul. As espécies de Polybia são muito semelhantes entre si, e a coloração do corpo é muito variável, dificultando a identificação das espécies do gênero e causando problemas taxonômicos. A maioria dos estudos citogenéticos neste gênero se baseiam na descrição cariotípica de oito espécies. Assim, neste estudo descrevemos o cariótipo de Polybia fastidiosuscula com a presença de um cromossomo B relatado pela primeira vez na família Vespidae; apresentamos as diferenças e semelhanças de colônias de Polybia (gr. occidentalis), mostrando que a citogenética pode ser usada como ferramenta auxiliar na diferenciação das espécies do grupo ajudando na resolução dos problemas taxonômicos. Sugerimos que os indivíduos analisados neste estudo e classificados como P. (gr. occidentalis) pertencem a duas espécies distintas. Investigamos também a composição da cromatina dessas espécies através da coloração com fluorocromos DAPI/CMA 3 e o mapeamento de sete microssatélites e do rDNA 18S, verificando que P. fastidiosuscula tem uma composição cromossômica muito diferente das espécies de P. (gr. occidentalis) tanto na distribuição dos microssatélites como das regiões ricas em AT e GC. Sugerimos a origem intraespecífica do cromossomo B de P. fastidiosuscula baseado no compartilhamento da composição heterocromática e do microssatélite TAT (10) com os cromossomos do complemento A. Por fim mostramos que TTAGG (6) e TCAGG (6) não são sequências teloméricas de Polybia, assim a sequência telomérica deste grupo ainda precisa ser investigada. The genus Polybia, containing 58 species, has the largest number of social wasps in the Epiponini tribe, and has a wide distribution in South America. The species of Polybia are very similar to each other, and the color of the body is very variable, making it difficult to identify the species of the genus and causing taxonomic problems. The majority of cytogenetic studies in this genus are based in the karyotype description of eight species. Therefore, in this study, we described the karyotype of Polybia fastidiosuscula, and made the first report of the presence of B chromosome in the Vespidae family; we presented differences and similarities among colonies of the Polybia (gr. occidentalis), detailing that cytogenetic studies are a useful tool to support species differentiation in this group, which fills the gap of taxonomic issues. We suggested that the individuals analyzed in this study, and categorized as P. (gr. occidentalis) belong to two distinct species. We also investigated the chromatin composition of these species through fluorochrome dyes DAPI/ CMA 3 , mapping of seven microsatellites, and 18S rDNA. We verified that P. fastidiosuscula has a chromosomal composition markedly different from species of P. (gr. occidentalis) for both microsatellite distribution as well as AT and CG-rich regions. We suggested the interspecific origin of B chromosome of P. fastidiosuscula based on shared heterochromatin composition, and TAT (10) microsatellite with complement chromosomes A. Finally, we showed that TTAGG (6) and TCAGG (6) are not telomeric sequences of Polybia, so the telomeric sequence of this group requires further investigation.

A região da América Latina e Caribe compreende uma extensa área geográfica no continente americano com uma população estimada de 588 milhões de habitantes em 2010. Objetivo: Analisar a produção científica acerca dos acidentes com vespas e abelhas na América Latina e Caribe, destacando as principais condutas terapêuticas. Metodologia: Foi realizada uma revisão sistemática da literatura até o período de 01 de setembro de 2018, sobre o tema acidentes com abelhas e vespas e suas principais complicações em países da América Latina e Caribe. Foram acessadas as bases de dados do Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (Medline), da Literatura Latino-americana e do Caribe em Ciências da Saúde (LILACS) e, a Revista da Sociedade Brasileira de Medicina Tropical. Resultados: Foramencontrados um total de 119 estudos potencialmente relevantes estes foram identificados e analisados, deste total apenas 27 estudos foram incluídos nesta revisão sistemática. Conclusão: Assim, nota-se a existência de pouca literatura científica sobre oassunto, o que reforça o contexto e a significância de se realizar estudos com maior afinco e abrangência nesta temática, objetivando assim o fortalecimento das medidas terapêuticas corretas para esta questão.

Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico Neste estudo, investigamos a morfologia dos espermatozoides do parasitoide Elasmus polistis (Eulophidae) utilizando microscopia de luz e eletrônica de transmissão. Os espermatozoides dessa espécie se mostraram filiformes, espiralados, com 165,6 (± 4,6) μm de comprimento e exibindo uma região de cabeça, formada por um pequeno acrossomo e o núcleo, e uma região de flagelo. O acrossomo e parte do núcleo são revestidos por uma camada extracelular, a partir da qual inúmeros e longos filamentos irradiam. O núcleo espiralado e com 24,1 (± 1,3) μm de comprimento estava preenchido com cromatina homogeneamente compacta e eletrodensa. Na região de transição núcleo-flagelo foi observado um adjunto do centríolo, também espiralado, que se estendia ao lado do núcleo por aproximadamente 0,5 μm e ao do corpo basal e demais componentes do flagelo por 1,1 μm. Os dois derivados mitocondriais começaram aproximadamente juntos e exatamente na base do adjunto do centríolo. Em seção transversal, eles se mostraram simétricos, com forma levemente ovalada e diâmetro menor do que aquele do axonema. Este último, também espiralado, era constituído por 9 + 9 + 2 microtúbulos, formados a partir do corpo basal situado imediatamente abaixo e alinhado com o núcleo. Os espermatozoides de E. polistis exibiram as mesmas estruturas básicas observadas em outros Chalcidoidea. Contudo nesta espécie essas células podem ser distinguidas daquelas de outros Eulophidae pela longa sobreposição do adjunto do centríolo aos demais elementos flagelares e também pela presença de um par central de microtúbulos no corpo basal. As características dos espermatozoides têm sugerido que os Eulophidae estão intimamente relacionados aos Trichogrammatidae e ambas famílias mais próxima aos Eurytomidae e Pteromalidae do que aos Agaonidae. In this study we investigated the sperm morphology of the parasitoid Elasmus polistis (Eulophidae) under light and transmission electron microscopy. The spermatozoa of this species are filiform and spiraled, with 165.6 (± 4.6) μm in length with a distinctive head, formed by a small acrosome and nucleus, and a region of flagellum. The acrosome and part of the nucleus are covered by an extracellular sheath, from which many long filaments radiate. The spiral nucleus with 24.1 (± 1.3) μm in length is filled with homogeneously compact chromatin. In the nucleous- flagellum transition the centriole adjunct extends towards the anterior portion in a spiral around the nucleus by approximately 0.5 μm and by 1.1 μm towards the posterior portion, overlaying the basal body, which has two central microtubules, and others components of the flagellum. The two mitochondrial derivatives began roughly at the same spot and at the base of the centriole adjunct. In cross-section, they were symmetrical, with a slightly oval shape and a smaller diameter than that of the axoneme. The latter, also in spiral, consisted of 9 + 9 + 2 microtubules and is formed from the basal body situated immediately below and aligned with the nucleus. The spermatozoa of E. polistis showed the same basic structures and morphological characteristics observed in other Chalcidoidea, however, it is possible to distinguish the spermatozoa of E. polistis from the other Eulophidae by the long length of the centriole adjunct on the flagellum and the presence of two central microtubules within the basal body. The characteristics of the spermatozoa suggest that Eulophidae is closely related to Trichogrammatidae and both families are more similar to Eurytomidae and Pteromalidae than Agaonidae.

To control crop pests, parasitoid wasps of the genus Trichogramma are one alternative to the use of insecticides. Since a wide variety of agrochemicals may be applied to the same crops, it is essential to assess the selectivity of insecticides used for pest control on Trichogramma pretiosum. Information on which insecticides are less harmful to T. pretiosum can improve biological control using this insect, an important tactic in IPM programs for field crops. This study aimed to determine the effects of insecticides on the pupal stage and on the parasitism capacity of T. pretiosum. Lambda-cyhalothrin + thiamethoxam were slightly harmful and chlorpyriphos was moderately harmful to the pupal stage, while acephate, chlorfenapyr and flubendiamide, although considered innocuous, affected the succeeding generations of wasps, with low emergence of F1. Chlorfenapyr, chlorpyriphos and lambda-cyhalothrin + thiamethoxam reduced the parasitism, and acephate had a deleterious effect on the generation that contacted the insecticide residue. For an effective IPM program, it is important to apply selective insecticides. Further studies are needed to determine the selectivity of these insecticides under field conditions.

Aggressive contests between animals are common but rarely result in death because the benefits of winning a fight rarely exceed the cost of losing. Lethal combat can evolve, however, when the contested resource translates to much of the future reproductive success of each combatant. Female agaonid fig wasps pollinate and lay their eggs in the flowers within the enclosed inflorescences (“figs”) of fig trees (Ficus spp.). Wasps rarely leave the first fig entered so the reproductive success of each “foundress” usually depends on the availability of flowers within a single fig. We report for the first time lethal combat between female agaonids, in the undescribed Pegoscapus sp. that pollinates Ficus citrifolia in southeastern Brazil. In staged dyadic contests, wasps showed no aggression outside or inside the fig until one foundress oviposited. The first wasp to oviposit then became aggressive, which usually resulted in the death of its competitor. Examination of dead foundresses in naturally occurring figs showed that injuring competitors, particularly through decapitation, was effective at reducing their oviposition rates. In a Panamanian F. citrifolia population, pollinated by another wasp species, Pegoscapus tonduzi , there was little aggression between foundresses in similar contests. We suggest that reduced aggression in P. tonduzi reflects less competition for resources essential for successful reproduction due to on average fewer foundresses per flower in Panama.

CAPES - Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior Vespas sociais, como as Polistes, são predadores generalistas com potencial para serem utilizadas como agentes de controle biológico. Em cultivos orgânicos é permitido o uso de biopesticidas, como o óleo de nim, para controle de pragas. A compatibilidade dessas duas formas de manejo depende do baixo risco toxicológico da azadiractina, ingrediente ativo do nim, às vespas. Neste estudo avaliamos os efeitos da azadiractina às colônias de Polistes versicolor (Hymenoptera: Vespidae). Primeiramente, verificamos que alimentos contaminados com nim não causam repelência ou fagoinibição às vespas adultas, aumentando as chances de exposição das colônias em situações realistas. Depois, as vespas foram cronicamente expostas a alimento contaminado com diferentes concentrações de azadiractina (0, 3, 15 e 30μg de ingrediente ativo (i.a.)/ml de solução açucarada), ou com o inseticida imidaclopride (96μg i.a./ml de solução açucarada), utilizado como controle positivo. A ingestão do nim reduziu a longevidade das vespas individualmente e das colônias. A toxicidade da azadiractina foi diretamente proporcional às concentrações do ingrediente ativo. Além disso, o desenvolvimento da cria foi afetado pela ingestão do nim, nas concentrações de 15 e 30μg i.a./ml. Portanto, este estudo fornece evidências de que colônias de P. versicolor mantidas em cultivos pulverizados com nim podem ter sua longevidade reduzida e o desenvolvimento de imaturos prejudicado. Social wasps, like Polistes, are generalist predators that can be used for biological control. In organic crops, the use of biopesticides is allowed. The simultaneous use of both methods of pest control depends of the low toxicological risk of azadirachtin, the active ingredient of neem oil, to the wasps. In this study we evaluated the effects of azadirachtin on the colonies of Polistes versicolor wasps (Hymenoptera: Vespidae). Firstly, we found that food contaminated with azadirachtin do not cause repellence or fagoinhibition on adult wasps, increasing the chances of colony exposure in realistic situations. Then, wasps were chronically exposed to food contaminated with different concentrations of azadirachtin (0, 3, 15 and 30μg of active ingredient (a.i.)/ml sugar solution) or imidacloprid insecticide (96 μg a.i./ml sugar solution), used as a positive control. Neem ingestion reduced the longevity of individual wasps and colonies. Azadiractin toxicity was directly proportional to the concentrations of the active ingredient. In addition, brood development was affected by neem ingestion at concentrations of 15 and 30μg i.a./ml. Therefore, this study provides evidence that colonies of P. versicolor maintained on cultures sprayed with neem may have reduced longevity and immature development impaired.

The prevailing paradigm for social wasp endocrinology is that of juvenile hormone (JH) functioning pleiotropically in potential and actual queens, where it fuels dominance behaviors, stimulates ovarian growth and/or affects the production of status-linked cuticular compounds. In colonies with annual cycles (e.g., temperate-zone species), female adults produced at the end of the summer (called gynes) are physiologically primed to hibernate. Despite the absence of egg-laying in the pre-overwintering phase, gynes engage in dominance interactions that may affect reproductive potential following hibernation. JH levels have long been inferred to be low in gynes but this has never been tested. In what is the first study to measure JH in gyne-containing colonies of a temperate paper wasp, and the first to incorporate hormone assays in Belonogaster, our results show that the JH titer positively correlates with gyne-specific traits (including oocyte length and a low frequency of foraging trips) in B. longitarsus, a South African paper wasp. Measures of dominance correlated with oocyte length, but not all dominant females possessed activated ovaries. The cuticular hydrocarbon profiles of gynes and workers were distinct, with oocyte length and JH titer showing a positive association with longer-chain methyl-branched alkanes. Nonetheless, evidence for a role of JH in dominance was inconclusive. Finally, the range of JH titers among gynes, and the positive association of JH titers with ovarian status and prospective fertility signals, makes it unlikely that the gyne phenotype is maintained by low JH levels.

Bees, wasps and flower flies were our model groups to investigate how landscape structure attributes affect alpha and beta diversity of different beneficial insect groups in Brazilian landscapes containing coffee crops. Species richness and abundance of wasps, and bee richness were positively correlated with forest cover at multiple spatial extents. Bee abundance, and species richness and abundance of flower flies did not respond to any landscape predictor. The community composition of wasps and bees in landscapes with low forest cover was composed of subsets of the communities located in forested landscapes, leading to species loss in structurally impoverished landscapes. High variations in landscape diversity and edge density between landscapes resulted in flower fly species replacement suggesting that pairs of landscapes with high and low diversity of habitat types and edge density harbor different species. Such results indicate that initiatives for the conservation of beneficial insects in the Atlantic Forest biodiversity hotspot must focus on forest conservation and restoration, because high levels of forest loss can result in the loss of wasp and bee species with potential negative consequences for the provision of pollination and pest control services in agroecosystems. Our findings can aid conservationists and policy makers to define priority actions for biodiversity conservation as well as the selection of appropriate spatial scales in landscape planning and management. We record the first time the occurrence of Pediobius pyrgo (Walker) (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) for South America. This is also the first report of P. pyrgo emerging from egg sacs of Latrodectus geometricus C. L. Koch (Araneae: Theridiidae). Não recebi financiamento Megastigmus transvaalensis is an exotic wasp that attacks Brazilian pepper tree drupes Schinus terebinthifolius in native forests and areas of restoration and ecological restoration in Brazil. The parasitism begins with the oviposition M. transvaalensis in drupes S. terebinthifolius where the larvae hatch and remain internally feeding of nutrients and tissue, affecting germination. The aim of this work was to study the effect of temperature, rainfall and humidity in the population dynamics of M. transvaalensis and determine the parasitism rate and sex ratio of this wasp in drupes S. terebinthifolius. The study was performed with yellow sticky traps and collection of S. terebinthifolius drupes in seasonal semideciduous forest during August 2014 to September 2015, in the region of Sorocaba, São Paulo, Brazil. The capture of insects through the sticky traps proved satisfactory, and thus can be applied to the monitoring of small Hymenopteros. Populations of M. transvaalensis were negatively correlated with the maximum temperature and population peak in the fall of 2015, meaning that when the maximum temperature has reduced, there is a higher incidence of insect field. The parasitism rate of S. terebinthifolius drupes ranged from zero to 36.34% during this period, making this value an aggravating factor for the emergence of new individuals, since this phytophagous wasp has the potential to be spread throughout Brazil and It poses a threat to the natural regeneration of S. terebinthifolius. The sex ratio of M. transvaalensis was 0.42 and 0.08 in the laboratory field. The bio-ecology and the damage caused by M. transvaalensis in drupes S. terebinthifolius warrant further studies to integrated management Megastigmus transvaalensis é uma vespa exótica que ataca drupas de aroeira-pimenteira Schinus terebinthifolius em florestas nativas e em áreas de recomposição e restauração ecológica no Brasil. O parasitismo inicia com a oviposição de M. transvaalensis nas drupas de S. terebinthifolius, onde as larvas internamente eclodem e permanecem alimentando-se dos nutrientes e tecidos, prejudicando a germinação. O objetivo desse trabalho foi estudar o efeito da temperatura, precipitação e umidade na flutuação populacional de M. transvaalensis e determinar o índice de parasitismo e razão sexual dessa vespa nas drupas de S. terebinthifolius. O estudo foi realizado com armadilhas adesivas amarelas e coleta de drupas de S. terebinthifolius em fragmento de floresta estacional semidecidual, durante agosto de 2014 a setembro de 2015, na região de Sorocaba, São Paulo, Brasil. A captura dos insetos através das armadilhas adesivas se mostrou satisfatória, podendo assim ser aplicada para o monitoramento de pequenos Hymenopteros. As populações de M. transvaalensis apresentaram correlação negativa com a temperatura máxima e pico populacional no outono de 2015, significando que, quando a temperatura máxima apresenta redução, há maior incidência do inseto em campo. O índice de parasitismo das drupas de S. terebinthifolius variou de zero a 36,34% no período avaliado, tornando este valor um agravante para o surgimento de novos indivíduos, uma vez que, essa vespa fitófaga tem potencial de ser disseminado por todo Brasil e representa ameaça para a regeneração natural de S. terebinthifolius. A razão sexual de M. transvaalensis foi de 0,42 no laboratório e 0,08 em campo. A bioecologia e os danos causados por M. transvaalensis em drupas de S. terebinthifolius justificam mais estudos visando o manejo integrado dessa vespa fitófaga.

(Spilochalcis) tridentata Delvare, 1992. O presente estudo morfológico propõe 15 outras espéceis, além da já drescrita. A diagnose do subgrupo tridentata e a descrição original de C. tridentata foram reavaliadas decorrendo na modificação e introdução de novos caracteres. A quantidade de caracteres descritivos para as espécies foi expandida para aproximadamente três vezes mais do que a contida na descrição original de C. tridentata. Novos dados sobre distribuição geográfica e associação com hospedeiros são apresentados. Uma chave de identificação e ilustrações são fornecidas para o reconhecimento de todas as espécies.

O Parque Nacional da Serra do Divisor (PNSD), localizado a noroeste do Estado do Acre, é considerado uma das áreas de maior diversidade da Amazônia. A importância de se considerar insetos em programas de conservação tem sido muito enfatizada. Vespas solitárias e sociais são componentes muito importantes dos ecossistemas, devido à posição que ocupam nas redes alimentares. Esse trabalho teve como objetivo realizar uma avaliação ecológica rápida da fauna de vespas do PNSD, para subsidiar a elaboração de um plano de manejo do referido parque. A amostragem foi realizada em 12 sítios de coleta, situados no interior de oito tipologias de vegetação. Os insetos foram coletados através de armadilhas Malaise, as quais foram expostas em todos os sítios por 24 horas, totalizando 288 horas de amostragem. Foram consideradas nas análises vespas das famílias Chalcididae, Eucharitidae, Evaniidae, Mutillidae, Pompilidae, Crabronidae e Vespidae. Ao todo, foram coletados 366 indivíduos distribuídos em 40 gêneros e 85 espécies. Os gêneros Ephuta (Mutillidae), Trypoxylon (Crabronidae) e Conura (Chalcididae) foram os mais ricos em espécies. Os sítios localizados na região norte do PNSD, considerada zona intangível e zona primitiva, foram os mais ricos em espécies. Cerca de 65% das espécies foram exclusivas a um único sítio, o que significa que as amostras possuem pequena similaridade faunística. Algumas espécies coletadas são consideradas raras.

Emersonella Girault, 1916 is a wasp genus including species that parasitize Chrysomelidae (Coleoptera) eggs, mainly Cassidinae. It occurs only in the Americas, and is primarily distributed in the Neotropical Region. In this paper two new species of Emersonella from the Atlantic Forest of southeastern Brazil are described and compared to similar species. Emersonella appendigastersp. nov. is characterized by an elongate last gastral tergite in female, thoracic dorsum flat, femora and tibiae yellowish in female, malar sulcus absent, frontal suture slightly down-curved laterally, eyes with scattered hairs, frons and vertex smooth, and propodeum smooth with small anteromedian foveae. Emersonella frieirocostaisp. nov. is characterized by an elongate gaster in the female, at most 1.3 times as long as mesosoma and pointed at apex, propodeum with two large anterolateral foveae, pronotum hardly visible in dorsal view, with posterior part smooth, transverse pronotal carina present and malar sulcus absent. Both species are egg parasitoids of Metriona elatior (Klug, 1820) (Chrysomelidae) which feeds on Solanum viarum Dunal (Solanaceae).

The purpose of this short communication is to provide information on the depository for the primary types of the new species described by Alvarenga et al. (2015) and thus validate the names suggested therein. The depository for the primary types of the new species Emersonella appendigaster Alvarenga, Costa & Hansson, 2015 and Emersonella frieirocostai Alvarenga, Costa & Hansson, 2015 is the Museu de Zoologia, Universidade de São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil (MZSP).

The aim of this study was to examine the species composition and the abundance of solitary wasps that nest in preexisting cavities in the Ilha Anchieta State Park, Brazil. Sampling was made during two years utilizing trap-nests. Of the 254 nests obtained, 142 nests were built by 14 species belonging to four genera and four families. In the remaining 112 nests all immatures were dead by unknown causes or had been parasitized by natural enemies. The occupation of trap-nests occurred almost throughout the study period and the wasps nested more frequently during the super-humid season. Trypoxylon lactitarse, Pachodynerus nasidens, Trypoxylon sp.2 aff. nitidum and Podium denticulatum were the most abundant species. The sex ratios of T. lactitarse and Trypoxylon sp.2 aff. nitidum were significantly male-biased, whereas those of Trypoxylon sp.5 aff. nitidum and P. nasidens were significantly female-biased. Sex ratios of P. denticulatum and P. brevithorax were not significantly different from 1:1. Natural enemies emerging from the nests were identified as belonging to the families Chrysididae, Ichneumonidae and Chalcididae (Hymenoptera), the genus Melittobia (Hymenoptera, Eulophidae), and the species Amobia floridensis (Townsend, 1892) (Diptera: Sarcophagidae). The number of cells with dead immatures from unknown factors was significantly higher than the number of cells parasitized by insects.

Estudou-se, em laboratório, a seletividade dos inseticidas clorpirifós, deltametrina, dimetoato, ethion, monocrotofós e permetrina às vespas predadoras Apoica pallens Fab., Brachygastra lecheguana Latreille e Polistes versicolor versicolor Olivier (Hymenoptera: Vespidae) em concentrações que correspondem a 50% e 100% da dosagem recomendada para o controle do bicho-mineiro-do-cafeeiro, Perileucoptera coffeella Guérin-Meneville (Lepidoptera: Lyonetiidae). Deltametrina foi seletivo em favor de P. versicolor versicolor e A. pallens. O ethion foi medianamente seletivo a A. pallens e P. versicolor versicolor, e seletivo em favor de B. lecheguana. Os demais inseticidas não foram seletivos às vespas predadoras. A ordem crescente de tolerância das vespas a deltametrina foi: P. versicolor versicolor > A. pallens > B. lecheguana. Para o ethion esta ordem foi: B. lecheguana > P. versicolor versicolor > A. pallens. O clorpirifós, deltametrina, dimetoato, monocrotofós e permetrina apresentaram semelhante toxicidade às vespas nas duas dosagens utilizadas. O ethion, por sua vez, reduziu seu impacto sobre A. pallens e P. versicolor versicolor quando aplicado em subdosagem. The selectivity of the insecticides chlorpyrifos, deltamethrin, dimethoate, ethion, monocrothophos and permethrin to the predatory wasps Apoica pallens Fab., Brachygastra lecheguana Latreille and Polistes versicolor versicolor Olivier (Hymenoptera: Vespidae) was studied, in laboratory, using 50% and 100% of the dosages used for controlling the coffee leafminer, Perileucoptera coffeella Guérin-Meneville (Lepidoptera: Lyonetiidae). Deltamethrin was selective in favour of P. versicolor versicolor and A. pallens. Ethion showed median selectivity in favour of P. versicolor versicolor and A. pallens and good selectivity to B. lecheguana. The other insecticides were not selective in favour of the predatory wasps. The order of tolerance to deltamethrin was: P. versicolor versicolor > A. pallens > B. lecheguana. To ethion, the order was: B. lecheguana > P. versicolor versicolor > A. pallens. Chlorpyrifos, deltamethrin, dimethoate, monocrothophos and permethrin presented similar toxicity to the wasps in both dosages used. On the other hand ethion reduced its impact on A. pallens and P. versicolor versicolor when applied in subdosages.

Ninhos de Trypoxylon (Trypargilum) lactitarse Saussure e Trypoxylon (Trypargilum) rogenhoferi Kohl foram obtidos em ninhos-armadilhas na Fazenda Santa Carlota, Cajuru, SP e Campus da Universidade de São Paulo, Ribeirão Preto, SP. Os ninhos de T. lactitarse (n=51) e de T. rogenhoferi (n=55) foram construídos em gomos de bambu que variaram em comprimento e diâmetro interno, respectivamente, de 88,2 a 233,9 mm e de 7,4 a 14,7 mm, para a primeira espécie e de 104,1 a 201,2 mm e de 7,5 a 14,8 mm para a segunda. As células foram aprovisionadas com aranhas, previamente paralisadas, em número variável de três a 23 aranhas e as biomassas de 129,1 a 367,9 mg, para T. lactitarse, e de três a 24 aranhas e de 143,8 a 506,6 mg, para T. rogenhoferi. Células de T. lactitarse contendo de três a 11 e de T. rogenhoferi de três a 12 presas apresentaram biomassas semelhantes às daquelas contendo de 12 a 23 e de 13 a 24, respectivamente. Para as duas espécies estudadas, os machos mostraram-se menores que as fêmeas, enquanto que machos e fêmeas de T. rogenhoferi foram maiores do que aqueles de T. lactitarse. A família de aranha mais representada nas coletas foi Araneidae, a qual correspondeu a 96,6% dos indivíduos capturados por T. lactitarse e 99,45% daqueles capturados por T. rogenhoferi; as espécies de aranhas mais coletadas pelo primeiro e segundo predador foram Eustala sp1 (37,6%) e Alpaida veniliae (Keyserling) (48,1%), respectivamente. Nests of Trypoxylon (Trypargilum) lactitarse Saussure and Trypoxylon (Trypargilum) rogenhoferi Kohl were obtained from trap-nests at Fazenda Santa Carlota, Cajuru, SP and at the Campus of the Universidade de São Paulo, Ribeirão Preto, SP. Nests of T. lactitarse (n=51) and T. rogenhoferi (n=55) were constructed in bamboo canes, 88.2 to 233.9 mm in length and 7.4 to 14.7 mm in internal diameter for the first species and 104.1 to 201.2 mm in length and 7.5 to 14.8 mm in internal diameter for the second one. Individual brood cells of T. lactitarse were provisioned with three to 23 paralyzed spiders and the total weight varied from 129.1 to 367.9 mg, whereas T. rogenhoferi were provisioned with three to 24 spiders and their weight varied from 143.8 to 506.6 mg. Cells of T. lactitarse with three to 11 and of T. rogenhoferi with three to 12 spiders showed weight similar to those with 12 to 23 and 13 to 24 spiders, respectively. For both species, females were larger than males, and males and females of T. rogenhoferi were larger than those of T. lactitarse. Araneidae was the most abundant family of spiders, with 96.6% of captures for T. lactitarse and 99.4% for T. rogenhoferi; the spider preys most collected by the first and second predator species were Eustala sp.1 (37.6%) and Alpaida veniliae (Keyserling) (48.1%), respectively.
