Item does not contain fulltext BACKGROUND: Mindfulness based stress reduction (mbsr) has been demonstrated to result in a reduction of stress and improvement of well-being in both healthy volunteers and the general population. AIM: To examine the effect of mbsr on burnout symptoms, well-being and professional development in medical, surgical and psychiatric residents. METHODS A randomised controlled trial of 148 medical, surgical and psychiatric residents of the Radboud umc, half of whom immediately participated in mbsr and half after a three-month waiting period. Self-report questionnaires were administered online before and after the intervention and waiting list period. Effect of mbsr on professional development was explored with a qualitative interview with a purposive sample of 19 residents six months after completion. RESULTS No differences were found between the mindfulness and waitlist group regarding emotional exhaustion in the study population as a whole. However, those with high level of burnout symptoms benefitted significantly more from the course than the others. In addition, participants in the mindfulness group demonstrated a higher competence, less worry and more mindfulness skills, self-compassion and empathy. In terms of professional development, residents reported improvements in self-awareness, insight, acceptance, resilience and relating to others. CONCLUSION: mbsr could result in a reduction of symptoms for medical and surgical residents with a high level of burnout symptoms. For the medical and surgical residents as a whole, mindfulness may enhance their professional development in several areas. 6 p.

The 'APC3' is a charge sampling and storage chip designed for high speed readout of silicon detectors. It has 32 channels, each with pre-amplifier, integrator and storage capacitors. Current from a silicon detector connected to the input is integrated as a charge and stored on a capacitor. There are 128 capacitors per channel which are used sequentially to store the charge. The charge is held on the storage capacitor until it is either read-out or discarded. Logic on the chip manages the storage and retrieval of samples. This logic uses a novel architecture based on a system of pointers and read-out addresses. This paper describes the operation of the chip and measurement of its performance.

Solution impregnations, pulltrusion and film stacking are widely used methods to prepare thermoplastic composite materials. Extruders are used to melt the polymer and to incorporate fibers into the polymer in order to modify physical properties. In this article, the compounding of colloidal silica nanoparticles filled polyamide-6 (PA-6) is achieved using a twin-screw extruder, which has a significant market share due to its low cost and easy maintenance. The experiments were performed at 250 rpm and the bulk throughput was 6 kg h(-1) with a pump pressure of 30 bars. The composites were characterized with nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). As determined by WAXD, the PA-6 showed higher amounts of gamma-phase when compared to other synthesis methods such as in situ polymerization. TEM pictures showed that the silica particles aggregated nevertheless, upon addition of 14% (w/w) silica the E-modulus increased from 2.7 to 3.9 GPa indicating that an effective mechanical coupling with the polymer was achieved. The behavior, illustrated with dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) curves, indicated that in general when a filled system is compared to unfilled material, the values of the moduli (E' and E") increased and tan 6 decreased. Determination of molecular mass distribution of the samples by means of size exclusion chromatography (SEC) coupled to a refractive index (RI), viscosity (DV) and light scattering (LS) detector revealed that the addition of silica did not decrease the average molecular weight of the polymer matrix, which is of importance for composite applications. Oxygen diffusion in the oxygen ionic conductor yttria-stabilized zirconia is investigated by means of the molecular dynamics simulation technique. Oxygen ions migrate by means of a discrete hopping process, mainly between neighbouring tetrahedral sites. Diffusion appears to occur in a short time and a long time regime. Only when the oxygen ions have moved over distances much larger than the characteristic distances of the underlying crystal structure, a linear relation is found between the mean square displacement and time. The oxygen tracer diffusion coefficient, obtained from this long time regime, is 1.86 x 10−6 and 3.23 x 10−6 cm2/s at 1759 and 2057 K, respectively. The ionic conductivity, calculated from the tracer diffusion coefficient, agrees well with experimental values.

We performed a detailed analysis of the thermal state of the Cenozoic Roer Valley Graben, the north-western branch of the European Cenozoic Rift System, based on a new set of temperature data. We developed a numerical technique for correcting bottom hole temperatures, including an evaluation of the uncertainty of thermal parameters. Comparison with drill stem test temperatures indicated that the uncertainty in corrected bottom hole temperatures using a two-component numerical model is approximately ± 4°C, which is much more accurate than the up to 15°C errors encountered in often-used line-source or Horner correction methods. The subsurface temperatures and the derived regional heat flow estimates of 53 ± 6 to 63 ± 6mWm-2 show no significant difference between the central rift and the adjacent structural highs. The absence of an elevated heat flow is attributed to the low amount of lithospheric thinning during the Cenozoic rifting phase (β=1.06-1.15). A local thermal anomaly exceeding +10°C was found in five wells in the north-western part of the rift basin at depths of 1000-1500m, and is most likely caused by the upward flow of fluids along faults, whereas lower temperatures in the upper 1500m in the southern part of the rift basin could indicate cooling by topography-driven groundwater flow. Conflicting ideas exist on the active or passive rifting mechanisms responsible for the formation of the different rift basins of European Cenozoic Rift System. The low spatial variation in heat flow found in this study suggests that the mechanism responsible for forming the Roer Valley Graben is passive rifting. © 2010 The Authors. In this paper an overview of the knowledge components needed for extensive documentation of small languages is given. The Language Archive is striving to offer all these tools to the linguistic community. The major tools in relation to the knowledge components are described. Followed by a discussion on what is currently lacking and possible strategies to move forward.

We present a software module, the LAT Bridge, which enables bidirectionalcommunication between the annotation and exploration tools developed at the MaxPlanck Institute for Psycholinguistics as part of our Language ArchivingTechnology (LAT) tool suite. These existing annotation and exploration toolsenable the annotation, enrichment, exploration and archive management oflinguistic resources. The user community has expressed the desire to usedifferent combinations of LAT tools in conjunction with each other. The LATBridge is designed to cater for a number of basic data interaction scenariosbetween the LAT annotation and exploration tools. These interaction scenarios(e.g. bootstrapping a wordlist, searching for annotation examples or lexicalentries) have been identified in collaboration with researchers at ourinstitute.We had to take into account that the LAT tools for annotation and explorationrepresent a heterogeneous application scenario with desktop-installed andweb-based tools. Additionally, the LAT Bridge has to work in situations wherethe Internet is not available or only in an unreliable manner (i.e. with a slowconnection or with frequent interruptions). As a result, the LAT Bridge’sarchitecture supports both online and offline communication between the LATannotation and exploration tools.

Organic-inorganic hybrid membranes of nanosized SiO2-filled polyamide composites were prepared via film casting and their transport properties were studied. Gas permeation measurements were performed at room temperature, and the membrane exhibited an increase in membrane permeability performance. In contrast to the performance of traditional dense filled polymer systems, the permeability increased with an increased number of nanosilica particles. The nanocomposites were studied using positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS). From the ortho-positronium (o-Ps) lifetime (3), the size of the local free volume (holes) was estimated. The increase in permeability is ascribed to the additional free volume obtained. This is created by the presence of nanoparticles that alter the PA chain packing. Furthermore, wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) patterns revealed that the incorporation of silica induced the structural modification of polymer chains by modifying the degree of crystallinity in comparison with the neat polymer.
