Abstract

Historically, water utilities have relied on tried-and-true practices in the design and operation of their infrastructure, tapping new resources and expanding networks as needed. However, as the effects of climate change and/or urbanization increasingly impact both water supply and demand, utilities need new, holistic planning and management approaches. Integrated planning approaches must account for changing policies, technological progress, and unique, setting-specific operating conditions. Based on this notion, an international web seminar with faculty, researchers, and students from nine universities across five continents was conducted. In the 3-month seminar, participants were split into groups and tasked with developing future-proof, sustainable water management solutions for fictitious settings with unique resource availability, climate change predictions, demographic, and socioeconomic constraints. The goal of the seminar was to combine participants' unique perspectives to tackle challenges in developing future water infrastructure, while forming lasting relationships. Water management concepts became more daring or "out-of-the-box" as the seminar progressed. Most groups opted for a holistic approach, optimizing existing infrastructure, integrating decentralized water management, furthering digitization, and fostering the adoption of innovative policy and planning strategies. To gauge their impact on the evolution of ideas, group dynamics and communication were observed throughout the seminar. As a result, the findings serve not only as a compendium of ideas and concepts for holistic design in the water sector, but also facilitate international collaboration, improve communication in cross-cultural teams or guide the development of training programs in water management for researchers, professional engineers, or water utilities. Abstract

Most water utilities have to handle a substantial number of customer complaints every year. Traditionally, complaints are handled by skilled staff who know how to identify primary issues, classify complaints, find solutions, and communicate with customers. The effort associated with complaint processing is often great, depending on the number of customers served by a water utility. However, the rise of natural language processing (NLP), enabled by deep learning, and especially the use of deep recurrent and convolutional neural networks, has created new opportunities for comprehending and interpreting text complaints. As such, we aim to investigate the value of the use of NLP for processing customer complaints. Through a case study about the Water Utility Groningen in the Netherlands, we demonstrate that NLP can parse language structures and extract intents and sentiments from customer complaints. [EN] A digital twin (DT) is a virtual copy (a digital model) of a real system continuously fed with data to mimic the systems¿ past, present and future behaviour. This makes it possible to detect anomalies, test new ideas and changes in the virtual system and assess how it reacts, minimizing the risks to the real system. In this sense, the DT can be seen as a playground to explore the effects of different scenarios and to practice how to best react and operate the physical system under these circumstances. The concept of DT has been used traditionally in the industry field but it can also be developed and exploited in a city management context, and in particular in Water Supply and Distribution Networks (WSDN), where it can be applied to all aspects of the system.

13. Monitoren loden leidingbestand in Nederland : voortgangsresultaten verwijderen loden leidingen door de Nederlandse drinkwaterbedrijven

Belang: Voltooiing van de verwijdering van loden leidingen in het distributienet (distributie- en aansluitleidingen) van de drinkwaterbedrijven binnen een periode van twee jaar, vanaf 1 juli 2020. Als gevolg van zowel het verschijnen van een rapport van de Gezondheidsraad als van problemen met loden leidingen in Amsterdam, is in 2019 de aandacht voor lood in drinkwater sterk toegenomen. De minister van [?] heeft in juli 2020 een kamerbrief uitgestuurd met daarin specifieke acties. Voor de Nederlandse drinkwaterbedrijven bestaat de actie uit het streven naar voltooiing van de sanering van loden leidingen in het distributienet (distributie- en aansluitleidingen) van de drinkwaterbedrijven binnen een periode van twee jaar, vanaf 1 juli 2020. In de brief is opgenomen dat de waterbedrijven de voortgang bijhouden en de ILT (Inspectie Leeromgeving en Transport) toezicht houdt. De gegevens over de voortgang zullen periodiek worden opgevraagd bij de waterbedrijven door ILT ten behoeve van evaluatie en rapportage. ILT heeft deze vraag bij Vewin neergelegd, en Vewin heeft KWR gevraagd deze actie uit te voeren.

24. Joint probabilities of demands on a water distribution network: A non-parametric approach

Abstract

This paper proposes aprocedure to determine the probability of a specific water demand scenario in a Water Distribution Network (WDN). Stochastic correlated demands are generated for each node of the network using scaling laws. In particular, each demand fits a normal probability density function (PDF). To determine the joint probability of water demands at all nodes of the network, each nodal demand is divided in class intervals and a multidimensional contingency table is built. The joint probability represents the occurrence probability of a specific water demand scenario. The presented approach produces valuable information about demand scenarios and their probability of occurrence in a network. This method can find a further application in the robust optimization models for the design and management of WDN.

26. Automated feature recognition in CFPD analyses of DMA or supply area flow data.

Abstract

The recently introduced comparison of flow pattern distributions (CFPD) method for the identification, quantification and interpretation of anomalies in district metered areas (DMAs) or supply area flow time series relies, for practical applications, on visual identification and interpretation of features in CFPD block diagrams. This paper presents an algorithm for automated feature recognition in CFPD analyses of DMA or supply area flow data, called CuBOid, which is useful for objective selection and analysis of features and automated (pre-)screening of data. As such, it can contribute to rapid identification of new leakages, unregistered changes in valve status or network configuration, etc., in DMAs and supply areas. The method is tested on synthetic and real flow data. The obtained results show that the method performs well in synthetic tests and allows an objective identification of most anomalies in flow patterns in a real life dataset. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Water distribution networks are expected to fulfill the water demand by all consumers and at all times, even during critical scenarios, such as pipe failures. In this work, a methodology is proposed to maximize the quality of service during pipe failures by operating valves. The selection of the valves to operate is done by solving an optimization problem using Gondwana, a generic optimization tool for drinking water distribution networks. Different objective functions and different failure scenarios are investigated, considering a real-life water distribution network. The analysis is performed considering the peak demand condition. The proposed methodology is useful for water companies in managing the operation of their networks during critical scenarios.
