To develop a suite of quality indicators (QIs) for the management of patients with ventricular arrhythmias (VA) and the prevention of sudden cardiac death (SCD). The Working Group comprised experts in heart rhythm management including Task Force members of the 2022 European Society of Cardiology (ESC) Clinical Practice Guidelines for the management of patients with VA and the prevention of SCD, members of the European Heart Rhythm Association, international experts, and a patient representative. We followed the ESC methodology for QI development, which involves (i) the identification of the key domains of care for the management of patients with VA and the prevention of SCD by constructing a conceptual framework of care, (ii) the development of candidate QIs by conducting a systematic review of the literature, (iii) the selection of the final set of QIs using a modified-Delphi method, and (iv) the evaluation of the feasibility of the developed QIs. We identified eight domains of care for the management of patients with VA and the prevention of SCD: (i) structural framework, (ii) screening and diagnosis, (iii) risk stratification, (iv) patient education and lifestyle modification, (v) pharmacological treatment, (vi) device therapy, (vii) catheter ablation, and (viii) outcomes, which included 17 main and 4 secondary QIs across these domains. Following a standardized methodology, we developed 21 QIs for the management of patients with VA and the prevention of SCD. The implementation of these QIs will improve the care and outcomes of patients with VA and contribute to the prevention of SCD.

More than 500 million people worldwide live with cardiovascular disease (CVD). Health systems today face fundamental challenges in delivering optimal care due to ageing populations, healthcare workforce constraints, financing, availability and affordability of CVD medicine, and service delivery. Digital health technologies can help address these challenges. They may be a tool to reach Sustainable Development Goal 3.4 and reduce premature mortality from non-communicable diseases (NCDs) by a third by 2030. Yet, a range of fundamental barriers prevents implementation and access to such technologies. Health system governance, health provider, patient and technological factors can prevent or distort their implementation. World Heart Federation (WHF) roadmaps aim to identify essential roadblocks on the pathway to effective prevention, detection, and treatment of CVD. Further, they aim to provide actionable solutions and implementation frameworks for local adaptation. Commercially available health technologies such as smartphones and smartwatches, activity trackers and eHealth applications, commonly referred to as wearables, are increasingly available and used both in the leisure and healthcare sector for pulse and fitness/activity tracking. The aim of the Position Paper is to identify specific barriers and knowledge gaps for the use of wearables, in particular for heart rate (HR) and activity tracking, in clinical cardiovascular healthcare to support their implementation into clinical care. The widespread use of HR and fitness tracking technologies provides unparalleled opportunities for capturing physiological information from large populations in the community, which has previously only been available in patient populations in the setting of healthcare provision. The availability of low-cost and high-volume physiological data from the community also provides unique challenges. While the number of patients meeting healthcare providers with data from wearables is rapidly growing, there are at present no clinical guidelines on how and when to use data from wearables in primary and secondary prevention. Technical aspects of HR tracking especially during activity need to be further validated. How to analyse, translate, and interpret large datasets of information into clinically applicable recommendations needs further consideration. While the current users of wearable technologies tend to be young, healthy and in the higher sociodemographic strata, wearables could potentially have a greater utility in the elderly and higher-risk population. Wearables may also provide a benefit through increased health awareness, democratization of health data and patient engagement. Use of continuous monitoring may provide opportunities for detection of risk factors and disease development earlier in the causal pathway, which may provide novel applications in both prevention and clinical research. Dat een plant- of diersoort sterk in aantal afneemt of zelfs helemaal dreigt te verdwijnen, we kijken er tegenwoordig nauwelijks meer van op. Toch sloeg het bericht over 70% achteruitgang van de insectenbiomassa in enkele Duitse natuurgebieden (Hallmann et al., 2017) in als een bom. Dit ging over achteruitgang op ongekend grote schaal; er was echt iets heel erg mis. Het leidde tot veel media-aandacht en ambitieuze plannen om biodiversiteit beter te beschermen. Blijkbaar moet een ontwikkeling eerst een rampzalige omvang aannemen voordat er bereidheid is het serieus te nemen. De schrikreactie was begrijpelijk én opmerkelijk. Begrijpelijk omdat Nederland al decennialang soorten achteruit ziet gaan. Opmerkelijk omdat de laatste jaren in Nederland voorzichtig sprake leek te zijn van enig herstel van de biodiversiteit, wat zowel de Rode Lijst indicator (Compendium voor de Leefomgeving, 2018) als de Nederlandse Living Planet Indicator (WNF, 2015) lieten zien. Er gaan behalve de geconstateerde achteruitgang dus ook veel soorten vooruit; wat valt daar uit te leren?

In een aantal Nederlandse natuurgebieden is het de bedoeling om het aantal zwarte spechten op Natura 2000-niveau te krijgen. Dit instandhoudingsdoel wordt hier echter meestal niet gehaald. En dus stokt de vergunningverlening rondom die gebieden. De vraag is dus met welke maatregelen de beheerders kunnen zorgen voor meer zwarte spechten.

Met de nog altijd te hoge stikstofbelasting en het vooralsnog ontbreken van een effectief brongericht beleid wordt het voor behoud en ontwikkeling van de natuur in het droog zandlandschap alleen maar urgenter om effectieve herstelmaatregelen te nemen. Wat is het perspectief van dergelijke maatregelen? Wat zijn urgente onderzoeksvragen? En schept het Nederlandse natuurbeleid goede kaders voor herstel.

De Programmatische Aanpak Stikstof (PAS) moet in de komende achttien jaar zorgen dat stikstofgevoelige natuur weer opfleurt in Natura 2000-gebieden: er wordt gestreefd naar een combinatie van economische ontwikkeling, dalende stikstofdepositie en natuurherstel. Daarvoor worden in de komende tijd flinke investeringen gedaan. Om de kans op succes te vergroten, en de altijd aanwezige risico’s zo klein mogelijk te houden, is begeleidend wetenschappelijk onderzoek van groot belang. Het Kennisnetwerk OBN kan een grote bijdrage leveren aan de opzet, begeleiding en toetsing van toekomstig onderzoek zodat de PAS-herstelmaatregelen echt effectief zijn.

De Raad voor de Leefomgeving en Infrastructuur heeft zijn advies over nieuw natuurbeleid goed getimed. Dit jaar gaan de provincies hun natuurbeleid herzien. Bezuinigingen zijn niet van tafel en zullen een rol spelen. Als de voortekenen niet bedriegen kiest een aantal provincies voor lagere ambities. Ook zullen Rijk en provincies dit jaar gaan besluiten waaraan de middelen voor natuur van het Lenteakkoord zullen worden besteed. Als de adviezen van de Raad worden opgevolgd betekent dit op enkele punten een fundamentele koerswijziging. Maar is dat genoeg?

De afname in biodiversiteit treft alle levensvormen. Omdat ongewervelden, en met name insecten, de overgrote meerderheid van de soorten omvatten, geldt hier ook de grootste kans op verlies aan soorten (Dunn, 2005). De integratie van ongewervelden in natuurbeheer en -beleid is echter niet navenant hun (relatieve) soortenrijkdom en ecologisch belang.

This was taken from the recent Red List and their main biogeographical regions (taken from the first reporting on Article 17 of the Directive). Most important are the Dos and Don`ts, which summarize in a few bullet points what to do and what to avoid in order to protect and conserve these butterflies and their habitats.

En dan: wat is natuur nog in dit land?'Met die regel uit het gedicht van J.C. Bloem begint dit boek. Om eigenlijk al meteen op de volgende bladzijde het antwoord te verklappen: de biodiversiteit in ons land is opmerkelijk hoog. Hier krabben de meeste vlinderaars eens achter hun oren, want Nederland ervaren we niet als een land met een hoge vlinderdiversiteit. Het boek is duidelijk geschreven met een plantensociologische achtergrond. Niet voor niets is Joop Schaminée hoofdauteur van 'De vegetatie van Nederland' en nog tal van andere boeken. Dat lijkt zware kost, maar omdat het boek zo goed geschreven is, leest het als een trein. En gaandeweg het boek wordt je zelfs een beetje trots op Nederland, al is dat nu helaas een beladen term geworden. Want ons land heeft (of moet ik zeggen had) veel te bieden aan natuur. Per regio worden de belangrijkste ecosystemen met hun belangrijke soorten beschreven. Ook vlinders komen daarbij af en toe aan bod. Maar de hoofdmoot bestaat toch wel uit planten en dan vooral vegetatietypen. Maar dat is nu eenmaal wel de basis voor onze vlinders. Erg leuk vind ik de kaartjes met hetzelfde gebied rond 1950 en nu. Bijna onvoorstelbaar wat er veranderd is. En het maakt meteen inzichtelijk waarom we zoveel vlinders zijn kwijtgeraakt. Want dat is natuurlijk wel waar: waar vegetaties en planten zich vaak in natuurgebieden nog jaren kunnen handhaven op kleine oppervlaktes, is het voor vlinders veel vlugger voorbij. Een stukje van 20 bij 20 meter is simpelweg te klein, wij hebben meer nodig. En zo vinden de auteurs nog overal voorbeelden van onze prachtige natuur, maar het is wel een versie die meestal zonder de karakteristieke dagvlinders is: Nederland mag dan nog wel een opmerkelijk hoge biodiversiteit hebben, met de dagvlinderdiversiteit is het droevig gesteld. The European Red List is a review of the conservation status of c. 6,000 European species (mammals, reptiles, amphibians, freshwater fishes, butterflies, dragonflies, and selected groups of beetles, molluscs, and vascular plants) according to IUCN regional Red Listing guidelines. It identifies those species that are threatened with extinction at the regional level - in order that appropriate conservation action can be taken to improve their status. This publication summarises results for a selection of Europe's native species of butterflies. About 9% of the species are threatened with extinction at the European level as a result of threats including habitat loss and degradation due to changes in agricultural management.

Ruiter, E.J., R.M.J.C. Kleukers & T.J. Verstrael, 2010. Cooperation for dragonflies. Brachytron 13(1/2): 47-54. In 2007 the Dutch Society for Dragonfly Studies (NVL) celebrated its 10th anniversary. For ten years the NVL closely cooperated with Dutch Butterfly Conservation (De Vlinderstichting) and European invertebrate Survey (EIS-NL). This cooperation turned out to be successful and resulted in some remarkable projects. For example: the realization of the atlas on Dutch dragonflies in 2002. This publication appeared as volume 4 in the series Fauna of The Netherlands. Another notable event was the Dutch/German symposium at Kranenburg (Germany) in 2004. Cooperation across borders is one of the main goals of the NVL, because after all dragonflies do not acknowledge borders and conservation is a matter of international importance. At this moment the NVL is involved by the realization of an Atlas on European Dragonflies (Kalkman, in prep.). On a national scale the NVL is working on more ecological knowledge of specific species. In 2002- 2007 the ecology of Sympecma paedisca was studied, resulting in a special edition of Brachytron which presented the results (Brachytron 11 (1), 2007). This publication appeared courtesy of Dutch Butterfly Conservation and EIS-NL. Hopefully, the successful cooperation between the three organizations will be preceded for at least another ten years.
