Abstract

International audience; Within the framework of the French ASTRID project, core design studies are being conducted by the CEA with support from AREVA and EDF. The design studies include the GEN IV reactor objectives, particularly in terms of improving safety. Options selection was performed at the conclusion of the pre-conceptual design phase. The CFV core was confirmed as the reference core for the ASTRID project. The design routes of the core have be reoriented for the conceptual design phase of the ASTRID project -Limitation of the core diameter,-Innovative options of control and shutdown architecture control and safety absorber rods used to manage the core reactivity during the cycle,-Introduction of complementary safety device for prevention and mitigation of severe accidents,-Choice of S/A internal storage instead of external storage,-Neutron shielding on the Inner vessel components.At the end of the ASTRID conceptual design phase (2015), a new evolution of the CFV core (CFV V4) which integrated these above options was designed. This paper will describe the CFV V4 focusing core performances, behavior during unprotected transients.

Abstract

France has a long experience of about 50 years in designing, building and operating sodium-cooled fast reactors (SFR) such as RAPSODIE, PHENIX and SUPER PHENIX. Fast reactors feature the double capability of reducing nuclear waste and saving nuclear energy resources by burning actinides. Since this reactor type is one of those selected by the Generation IV International Forum, the French government asked, in the year 2006, CEA, namely the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission, to lead the development of an innovative GEN-IV nuclear- fission power demonstrator. The major objective is to improve the safety and availability of an SFR. The neutron flux monitoring (NFM) system of any reactor must, in any situation, permit both reactivity control and power level monitoring from startup to full power. It also has to monitor possible changes in neutron flux distribution within the core region in order to prevent any local melting accident. The neutron detectors will have to be installed inside the reactor vessel because locations outside the vessel will suffer from severe disadvantages; radially the neutron shield that is also contained in the reactor vessel will cause unacceptable losses in neutron flux; below the core the presence of a core-catcher prevents from inserting neutron guides; and above the core the distance is too large to obtain decent neutron signals outside the vessel. Another important point is to limit the number of detectors placed in the vessel in order to alleviate their installation into the vessel. In this paper, we show that the architecture of the NFM system will rely on high-temperature fission chambers (HTFC) featuring wide-range flux monitoring capability. The definition of such a system is presented and the justifications of technological options are brought with the use of simulation and experimental results. Abstract

Background: Peste des petits ruminanats (PPR) is an economically important viral disease affecting goats and sheep. Four genetically distinct lineages of peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV) have been identified. In Gabon, the virus has not so far been detected. Findings: Epidemiological investigations of Aboumi PPR outbreak revealed a high case fatality rate in sheep (98.9%). We detected and characterized peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV), in October 2011, during the suspected outbreak in sheep and goats in Aboumi village located in the south-eastern. PPRV RNA was detected in 10 of 14 samples from three sick animals. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that the PPRV strain belonged to lineage IV and was closely related to strain circulating in neighboring Cameroon. Conclusions: This is the first molecular detection and typing of the PPRV strain associated with fatal PPR infection in these small ruminants and concrete evidence that PPRV is present and circulating in Gabon.

Abstract

Nuclear safety has always been at the heart of the concerns of nuclear power plant operators and developers, as well as of various nuclear research organizations and regulatory authorities. Over the last decades, all these nuclear actors have developed and integrated a large number of calculation codes and other tools into their safety work. From the system approach to the local understanding of a phenomenon on a given component, from neutronics to operation optimization for long-term operation, these methods and codes have been constantly evolving since their appearance, in order to be able to integrate new plant designs and components, to improve the results of modeling physical phenomena or quantify and thus reduce the uncertainties on these results. Currently, several H2020 Euratom projects are working on the improvement of these codes and methods. This article will focus on three of these projects: CAMIVVER (Codes And Methods Improvements for VVER comprehensive safety assessment), APAL (Advanced PTS Analysis for LTO), and sCO2-4-NPP (innovative SCO2-based heat removal technology for an increased level of safety of Nuclear Power Plants) in order to illustrate our thinking on the improvement of calculation frameworks. First, we will present the work and the approach adopted with regard to the different calculation codes and methods used in each of these three projects. We will then conclude with an overall analysis of these three approaches, highlighting the difficulties and successes of these three projects, and identifying areas of work for the general improvement of the calculation codes.

Abstract

The preferred approach of the NASA development effort in nickel hydrogen battery design utilizes a bipolar plate stacking arrangement to obtain the required voltage-capacity configuration. In a bipolar stack, component designs must take into account not only the typical design considerations such as voltage, capacity and gas management, but also conductivity to the bipolar (i.e., intercell) plate. The nickel and hydrogen electrode development specifically relevant to bipolar cell operation is discussed. Nickel oxide electrodes, having variable type grids and in thicknesses up to .085 inch are being fabricated and characterized to provide a data base. A selection will be made based upon a system level tradeoff. Negative (hydrpogen) electrodes are being screened to select a high performance electrode which can function as a bipolar electrode. Present nickel hydrogen negative electrodes are not capable of conducting current through their cross-section. An electrode was tested which exhibits low charge and discharge polarization voltages and at the same time is conductive. Test data is presented.

Abstract

France (CEA and FRAMATOME) and Japan (JAEA, MFBR, and MHI) teams have carried out collaborative works to have common technical views regarding a sodium-cooled fast reactor (SFR) concept. This paper mainly describes the capabilities of ASTRID 600 to demonstrate SFR technologies of both countries. Japan has studied the feasibility of an enhanced high burnup low-void effect (CFV) core and fuel using oxide dispersion-strengthened steel cladding in ASTRID 600, considering Japan’s target for core performance. The neutronics design of the core has satisfied most required design targets and conditions. Regarding passive shutdown capabilities, Japan team has performed a preliminary numerical analysis for ASTRID 600 using a complementary safety device (CSD), called a self-actuated shutdown system (SASS), one of the safest approaches in Japan. Japan’s team used the SASS in place of the hydraulically suspended absorber rod, called RBH, one of the safest approaches of France, to investigate the potential of the SASS as a design measure common to the countries. The preliminary analysis has shown that the SASS can satisfy the countries’ main requirements. This study has also revealed that the mitigation measures of ASTRID 600 against a severe accident are promising to achieve in-vessel retention for both countries.

Abstract

In the frame of the France-Japan agreement on nuclear collaboration, a bilateral collaboration agreement on nuclear energy was signed on March 21st, 2017, including a topic dedicated to Sodium-cooled Fast Reactor (SFR). This agreement has set the framework to start a bilateral discussion on a joint view of an SFR concept. France (CEA and FRAMATOME) and Japan (JAEA, MHI and MFBR) have carried out these studies from 2017 to 2019. Based on the beginning of the basic design phase of ASTRID project − ASTRID − 600 MWe (ASTRID for Advanced Sodium Technological Reactor for Industrial Demonstration), the two countries performed a common work to examine ways to develop a feasible common design concept, which could be realized both in France and in Japan. The subject was then extended and extrapolated with the ASTRID − 150 MWe data (reduced power reactor and enhanced experimental capabilities) in a second phase of this study. France and Japan first focused on design requirements. Common requirements were identified, as well as differences in the safety approach and the structural design requirements, according to national standards and respective site conditions, in particular considering seismic hazards. The teams developed common Top-Level design Requirements (TLRs) to allow common specification data, then joint design. This collaborative work was carried out through the implementation of twelve France-Japan Working Groups, working jointly. This paper is providing a review of this joint synthesis on Sodium Fast Reactor design concept. It is summarizing the context and objectives, then the definition and approaches of the Top Level Requirements. This paper is then dealing with the major design features: the core design and their related safety aspects, and the nuclear island design. Thus, this paper is providing a comprehensive review of this joint work gathering French and Japan nuclear design teams during two full years.
