We report the synthesis and characterization of various compounds containing 1,7,9-hydroxylated closo-dodecahydrododecaborate (B12H9(OH)32-) cluster motif. Specifically, we show how the parent compound can be synthesized on the multigram scale and further perhalogenated, leading to a new class of vertex-differentiated weakly coordinating anions (WCAs). We show that a post-modification of the hydroxyl groups by alkylation affords further opportunities for tailoring these anions' stability, steric bulk, and solubility properties. The resulting dodecaborate-based salts were subjected to a full thermal and electrochemical stability evaluation, showing that many of these anions maintain thermal stability up to 500 °C and feature no redox activity below ~1 V vs. Fc/Fc+. Mixed hydroxylated/halogenated clusters show enhanced solubility compared to their purely halogenated analogs and retain weakly coordinating properties in the solid-state, as demonstrated by ionic conductivity measurements of their Li+ salts.

Appending functional groups to the exterior of Zn4L4 self-assembled cages allows gated control of anion binding. While the unfunctionalized cages contain aryl groups in the ligand that can freely rotate, attaching inert functional groups creates a "doorstop", preventing rotation and slowing the guest exchange rate, even though the interiors of the host cavities are identically structured. The effects on anion exchange are subtle and depend on multiple factors, including anion size, the nature of the leaving anion, and the electron-withdrawing ability and steric bulk of the pendant groups. Multiple exchange mechanisms occur, and the nature of the external groups controls associative and dissociative exchange processes: these bulky groups affect both anion egress and ingress, introducing an extra layer of selectivity to the exchange. Small changes can have large effects: affinities for anions as similar as PF6- and SbF6- can vary by as much as 400-fold between identically sized cavities.

Multiresponsive materials can adapt to numerous changes in their local environment, which makes them highly valuable for various applications. Although nanostructured and polymeric multiresponsive materials are plentiful, small-molecule analogues are scarce. This work presents a compact cyclometalated platinum(II) complex that bears a crown ether cavity (18C6-PtII); the intimate ring/emitter connectivity is key to unlocking multiresponsiveness. Complex 18C6-PtII responds to (i) cationic guests, producing changes in luminescence in both solution and the solid state, (ii) solvent molecules, which perturb the packing of the complex in the solid state and cause reversible color changes, and (iii) solvent polarity, which leads to controlled aggregation. These responses may enable 18C6-PtII to function as a sensor for ions and solvents, or as a functional unit for the fabrication of hybrid supramolecular polymers and metallogels.

Two-coordinate silylamido complexes of nickel and copper rapidly react with CO

Macrocycle engineering is a key topic in supramolecular chemistry. When synthesizing a ring, one can obtain either complex mixtures of macrocycles of different sizes or a single ring if a template is utilized. Here, we unite these approaches along with post-synthetic modifications to transform a single tether into multiple rings - up to five per tether. The macrocycles contain two bridged phenylpyridine ligands that are connected through a Pt atom, which defines the rings' shape, size, and host activity. All rings undergo redox reactions (between PtII and PtIV) that allow for large conformational changes. Their reactivity, together with their host performance, is a convenient way to control the capture and release of guests, to mediate ring transformations, and to control pseudorotaxane-to-pseudorotaxane conversions. This novel approach could serve to assemble other libraries of small ring molecules, create cyclic polymers bridged by responsive-at-metal nodes, and produce processable mechanically interlocked molecules.

There has been an increasing interest in chemistry involving nitrogen oxyanions, largely due to the environmental hazards associated with increased concentrations of these anions leading to eutrophication and aquatic "dead zones". Herein, we report the synthesis and characterization of a suite of MNOx complexes (M = Co, Zn: x = 2, 3). Reductive deoxygenation of cobalt bis(nitrite) complexes with bis(boryl)pyrazine is faster for cobalt than previously reported nickel, and pendant O-bound nitrito ligand is still readily deoxygenated, despite potential implication of an isonitrosyl primary product. Deoxygenation of zinc oxyanion complexes is also facile, despite zinc being unable to stabilize a nitrosyl ligand, with liberation of nitric oxide and nitrous oxide, indicating N-N bond formation. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy is effective for discriminating the types of nitrogen in these molecules. ESI mass spectrometry of a suite of M(NOx)y (x = 2, 3 and y = 1, 2) shows that the primary form of ionization is loss of an oxyanion ligand, which can be alleviated via the addition of tetrabutylammonium (TBA) as a nonintuitive cation pair for the neutral oxyanion complexes. We have shown these complexes to be subject to deoxygenation, and there is evidence for nitrogen oxyanion reduction in several cases in the ESI plume. The attractive force between cation and neutral is explored experimentally and computationally and attributed to hydrogen bonding of the nitrogen oxyanion ligands with ammonium α-CH2 protons. One example of ESI-induced reductive dimerization is mimicked by bulk solution synthesis, and that product is characterized by X-ray diffraction to contain two Co(NO)2+ groups linked by a highly conjugated diazapolyene.

The reaction chemistry of the bis-tetrazinyl pyridine ligand (btzp) towards nitrogen oxyanions coordinated to zinc is studied in order to explore the reduction of the NOx- substrates with a redox-active ligand in the absence of redox activity at the metal. Following syntheses and characterization of (btzp)ZnX2 for X=Cl, NO3 and NO2 , featuring O-Zn linkage of both nitrogen oxyanions, it is shown that a silylating agent selectively delivers silyl substituents to tetrazine nitrogens, without reductive deoxygenation of NOx-1 . A new synthesis of the highly hydrogenated H4 btzp, containing two dihydrotetrazine reductants is described as is the synthesis and characterization of (H4 btzp)ZnX2 for X=Cl and NO3 , both of which show considerable hydrogen bonding potential of the dihydrotetrazine ring NH groups. The (H4 btzp)ZnCl2 complex does not bind zinc in the pincer pocket, but instead H4 btzp becomes a bridge between neighboring atoms through tetrazine nitrogen atoms, forming a polymeric chain. The reaction of AgNO2 with (H4 btzp)ZnCl2 is shown to proceed with fast nitrite deoxygenation, yielding water and free NO. Half of the H4 btzp reducing equivalents form Ag0 and thus the chloride ligand remains coordinated to the zinc metal center to yield (btzp)ZnCl2 . To compare with AgNO2 , experiments of (H4 btzp)ZnCl2 with NaNO2 result in salt metathesis between chloride and nitrite, highlighting the importance of a redox-active cation in the reduction of nitrite to NO.

The first syntheses of functionalized sila-adamantanes via site-selective reactions are described. Mechanistic inquiry into the isomerization of sila-adamantane revealed new approaches for installing halides at the 2-position of the cluster. Meanwhile, isomerization via Lewis acid catalysts with non-nucleophilic counteranions provided access to sila-adamantane on the gram-scale, enabling us to discover strategies for substituting its 1-, 3-, 5-, and 7-positions with identical or distinct functional groups. Optical absorbance and density functional theory studies show that σ-withdrawing substituents at the 1-position strongly perturb optical absorbance in sila-adamantane, whereas substituents at the exocyclic and 2-position are optically inert. As silicon diamondoids are atomically precise models for silicon nanocrystals, our findings suggest that passivation at tertiary surface sites carries an outsized impact on the optical properties of surface-functionalized Si nanocrystals.

Reduction of the three-coordinate iron(III) imido [Ph2B(tBuIm)2Fe═NDipp] (1) affords [Ph2B(tBuIm)2Fe═NDipp][K(18-C-6)THF2] (2), a rare example of a high-spin (S = 2) iron(II) imido complex. Unusually for a late metal imido complex, the imido ligand in 2 has nucleophilic character, as demonstrated by the reaction with DippNH2, which establishes an equilibrium with the bis(anilido) complex [Ph2B(tBuIm)2Fe(NHDipp)2][K(18-C-6)THF2] (3). In an unusual transformation, formal insertion of iPrN═C═NiPr into the Fe═N(imido) bond yields the guanidinate [Ph2B(tBuIm)2Fe(iPrN)2CNDipp][K(18-C-6)THF2] (4). Reaction of 4 with excess DippNH2 provides 3, along with the guanidine (iPrNH)2C═NDipp. As suggested by these stoichiometric reactions, 2 is an efficient catalyst for the guanylation of carbodiimides, converting a wide range of aniline substrates under mild conditions.

The syntheses of (DIM)Ni(NO3)2 and (DIM)Ni(NO2)2, where DIM is a 1,4-diazadiene bidentate donor, are reported to enable testing of bis boryl reduced N-heterocycles for their ability to carry out stepwise deoxygenation of coordinated nitrate and nitrite, forming O(Bpin)2. Single deoxygenation of (DIM)Ni(NO2)2 yields the tetrahedral complex (DIM)Ni(NO)(ONO), with a linear nitrosyl and κ1-ONO. Further deoxygenation of (DIM)Ni(NO)(ONO) results in the formation of dimeric [(DIM)Ni(NO)]2, where the dimer is linked through a Ni–Ni bond. The lost reduced nitrogen byproduct is shown to be N2O, indicating N–N bond formation in the course of the reaction. Isotopic labelling studies establish that the N–N bond of N2O is formed in a bimetallic Ni2 intermediate and that the two nitrogen atoms of (DIM)Ni(NO)(ONO) become symmetry equivalent prior to N–N bond formation. The [(DIM)Ni(NO)]2 dimer is susceptible to oxidation by AgX (X = NO3−, NO2−, and OTf−) as well as nitric oxide, the latter of which undergoes nitric oxide disproportionation to yield N2O and (DIM)Ni(NO)(ONO). We show that the first step in the deoxygenation of (DIM)Ni(NO)(ONO) to liberate N2O is outer sphere electron transfer, providing insight into the organic reductants employed for deoxygenation. Lastly, we show that at elevated temperatures, deoxygenation is accompanied by loss of DIM to form either pyrazine or bipyridine bridged polymers, with retention of a BpinO− bridging ligand., Deoxygenation of nitrogen oxyanions coordinated to nickel using reduced borylated heterocycles leads to N–N bond formation and N2O liberation. The nickel dimer product facilitates NO disproportionation, leading to a synthetic cycle.

A bidentate pyrazolylpyridine ligand (HL) was installed on divalent nickel to give [(HL)2Ni(NO3)]NO3. This compound reacts with a bis-silylated heterocycle, 1,4-bis-(trimethylsilyl)-1,4-diaza-2,5-cyclohexadiene (TMS2Pz) to simultaneously reduce one of the nitrate ligands and deprotonate one of the HL ligands, giving octahedral (HL)(L-)Ni(NO3). The mononitrate species formed is then further reacted with TMS2Pz to doubly deoxygenate nitrate and form [(L-)Ni(NO)]2, dimeric via bridging pyrazolate with bent nitrosyl ligands, representing a two-electron reduction of coordinated nitrate. Independent synthesis of a dimeric species [(L-)Ni(Br)]2 is reported and effectively assembles two metals with better atom economy.

The N2 analogue phosphorus nitride (PN) was the first phosphorus-containing compound to be detected in the interstellar medium; however, this thermodynamically unstable compound has a fleeting existence on Earth. Here, we show that reductive coupling of iron(IV) nitride and molybdenum(VI) phosphide complexes assembles PN as a bridging ligand in a structurally characterized bimetallic complex. Reaction with C≡NtBu releases the mononuclear complex [(N3N)Mo—PN]−, N3N = [(Me3SiNCH2CH2)3N]3–), which undergoes light-induced linkage isomerization to provide [(N3N)Mo—NP]−, as revealed by photocrystallography. While structural and spectroscopic characterization, supported by electronic structure calculations, reveals the PN multiple bond character, coordination to molybdenum induces a nucleophilic character at the terminal atom of the PN/NP ligands. Indeed, the linkage isomers can be trapped in solution by reaction with a Rh(I) electrophile., The highly reactive interstellar gas, phosphorus nitride, is assembled and stabilized as a reactive ligand in transition metal complexes.

In this manuscript, we report the the crystal structure of di­phenyl­bis­(mesityl­imidazole)­borane tri­fluoro­methane­sulfonate. Weak inter­actions, such as π–π stacking are present in the structure., The solid-state structure of bis­(1-mesityl-1H-imidazole-κN 3)di­phenyl­boron tri­fluoro­methane­sulfonate, C36H38BN4 +·CF3SO3 − or (Ph2B(MesIm)2OTf), is reported. Bis(1-mesityl-1H-imidazole-κN 3)di­phenyl­boron (Ph2B(MesIm)2+) is a bulky ligand that crystallizes in the ortho­rhom­bic space group Pbcn. The asymmetric unit contains one Ph2B(MesIm)2+ cationic ligand and one tri­fluoro­methane­sulfonate anion that balances the positive charge of the ligand. The tetra­hedral geometry around the boron center is distorted as a result of the steric bulk of the phenyl groups. Weak inter­actions, such as π–π stacking are present in the crystal structure.

Bimetallic magnesium(II) complexes are gaining significant interest in catalysis, yet their fundamental formation and behavior in organic media remain surprisingly unexplored relative to other divalent cations. To understand key principles of their formation, we investigate symmetric ditopic ligands bearing a phenolic backbone and characterize their ability to form dinuclear magnesium(II) cascade complexes with two bridging anions. High-fidelity production of bimetallic magnesium complexes relative to the monometallic complexes is indicative of positive cooperativity. Binding and recognition of analytes or substrates is a key characteristic of metal cascade complexes and relies on anion exchange, but this is also rarely studied with bimetallic magnesium complexes. Investigations with acetate, phosphate, and pyrophosphate reveal exchange of bridging nitrates using the bis-dipicolylamine complex. Rare seven-coordinate magnesium centers are found for the ester complex. The findings in this study provide formative steps to establish design principles for future generations of bimetallic magnesium(II) complexes.

4,4′-Bipyridyl is shown to be a catalyst for transfer of pinacolboryl groups from (Bpin)2 to nitrogen heterocycles and to Me3SiN3. Using stoichiometric (Bpin)2(pyrazine) or (Bpin)2(bipyridine) in an analogous manner, an aromatic nitro group is deoxygenated and subsequently borylated, and four-fold deoxygenation of (DIM)Fe(NO3)2(MeCN) to yield the dinitrosyl complex (DIM)Fe(NO)2 is facile. The co-product O(Bpin)2 is the quantitative fate of the removed oxo groups. With borylation of both nitrogen heterocycles and doubly deoxygenating two nitrates coordinated to a single metal center, broad spectrum methodology is demonstrated.

The biological and therapeutic significance of polyketides is a powerful impetus for the development of efficient methods to facilitate their construction. Emulating the efficiency of polyketide biosynthesis, a sophisticated arsenal of aldol-based strategies has evolved that is contingent on the generation of single enolate isomers. Since this has the potential to compromise efficiency in reagent-based paradigms, direct catalysis-based solutions would be enabling. To complement the array of substrate-based strategies, and regulate enolate geometry at the catalyst level, a direct catalytic alkylation of esters with oxyallenes has been developed. Synergizing metal hydride reactivity with Lewis base catalysis has resulted in a broad reaction scope with useful levels of stereocontrol (up to >99% ee). Facile derivatization of these ambiphilic linchpins is demonstrated, providing access to high-value vicinal stereocenter-containing motifs, including 1,2-amino alcohols.

The nitride ligand in iron(IV) complex PhB(MesIm)3Fe≡N reacts with excess H3SiPh to afford PhB(MesIm)3Fe(μ-H)3(SiHPh) as the major product, which has been structurally and spectroscopically characterized. Bulkier silane HaSiPh2 provides iron(II) amido complex PhB(MesIm)3FeN(H)(SiHPh2) as the initial product of the reaction, with excess H2SiPh2 affording diamagnetic PhB(MesIm)3Fe(μ-H)3(SiPh2) as the major product. Unobserved iron(II) hydride PhB(MesIm)3Fe–H is implicated as an intermediate in this reaction, as suggested by the results of the reaction between iron(II) amido PhB(MesIm)3FeN(H)tBu and H3SiPh, which provides PhB(MesIm)3Fe(H)(μ-H)2(Si(NHtBu)Ph) as the sole product.

International audience; The recognition of substituted phosphates underpins many processes including DNA binding, enantioselective catalysis, and recently template-directed rotaxane synthesis. Beyond ATP and a few commercial substrates, however, little is known about how substituents effect organophosphate recognition. Here, we examined alcohol substituents and their impact on recognition by cyanostar macrocycles. The organophosphates were disubstituted by alcohols of various chain lengths, dipropanol, dihexanol, and didecanol phosphate, each accessed using modular solid-phases syntheses. Based on the known size-selective binding of phosphates by π-stacked dimers of cyanostars, threaded [3]pseudorotaxanes were anticipated. While seen with butyl substituents, pseudorotaxane formation was disrupted by competitive OH···O– hydrogen bonding between both terminal hydroxyls and the anionic phosphate unit. Crystallography also showed formation of a backfolded propanol conformation resulting in an 8-membered ring and a perched cyanostar assembly. Motivated by established entropic penalties accompanying ring formation, we reinstated [3]pseudorotaxanes by extending the size of the substituent to hexanol and decanol. Chain entropy overcomes the enthalpically favored OH···O– contacts to favor random-coil conformations required for seamless, high-fidelity threading of dihexanol and didecanol phosphates inside cyanostars. These studies highlight how chain length and functional groups on phosphate’s substituents can be powerful design tools to regulate binding and control assembly formation during phosphate recognition.

The N2 analogue phosphorus nitride (PN) was the first phosphorus containing compound to be detected in the interstellar medium, however this thermodynamically unstable compound has a fleeting existence on Earth. Here, we show that reductive coupling of iron(IV) nitride and molybdenum(VI) phosphide complexes assembles PN as a bridging ligand in a structurally-characterized bimetallic complex. Reaction with C≡NtBu releases the mononuclear complex [(N3N)Mo-PN]−, N3N = [(Me3SiNCH2CH2)3N]3−), which undergoes light-induced linkage isomerization to provide [(N3N)Mo-NP]−, as revealed by photocrystallography. While structural and spectroscopic characterization, supported by electronic structure calculations reveal PN multiple bond character, coordination to molybdenum creates nucleophilic character at the terminal atom of the PN/NP ligands. Indeed, the linkage isomers can be trapped in solution by reaction with a Rh(I) electrophile.

High-valent iron species are key intermediates in oxidative biological processes, but hexavalent complexes apart from the ferrate ion are exceedingly rare. Here, we report the synthesis and structural and spectroscopic characterization of a stable Fe(VI) complex (3) prepared by facile one-electron oxidation of an Fe(V) bis(imido) (2). Single-crystal x-ray diffraction of 2 and 3 revealed four-coordinate Fe centers with an unusual “seesaw” geometry. 57Fe Mössbauer, x-ray photoelectron, x-ray absorption, and electron-nuclear double resonance (ENDOR) spectroscopies, supported by electronic structure calculations, support a low-spin (S = 1/2) d3 Fe(V) configuration in 2 and a diamagnetic (S = 0) d2 Fe(VI) configuration in 3. Their shared seesaw geometry is electronically dictated by a balance of Fe-imido σ- and π-bonding interactions.

Deoxygenation of nitrite oxygen with divalent cobalt was achieved using (PNNH)CoCl2, carrying a pyridyl pincer ligand with one P(t-Bu)2 arm and one pyrazole arm. Reaction of (PNNH)CoCl2 with NaNO2 at a 2 : 5 mole ratio promptly forms equimolar (PNNH)Co(NO2)3 and (PNN)Co(NO2)(NO), {CoNO}8 with the lost ligand proton combined with removed oxo as hydroxide. These two CoIII products are characterized, showing a bent CoNO unit as the fate of the reduced nitrogen. DFT calculations are consistent with two one-electron CoII reductants binding to one NO2− bridge, then proton transfer being needed for facile N/O bond scission. A species detected by low temperature execution of this reaction contains cobalt in two oxidation states with an N,O bridging nitro group and pincer ligands that have been deprotonated, showing the active participation of the proton responsive ligand.

The simple structural modification of replacing a terminal carboxylic acid with a primary amide group was found to lower the minimum gelation concentration (MGC), by at least an order of magnitude, for a series of N-lauroyl-l-amino acid phase-selective organogelators in decane. The amide-functionalized analogue N-lauroyl-l-alanine-CONH2 was demonstrated to gel a broad range of solvents from diesel to THF at MGCs of 2.5% w/v or less, as well as to produce gels with a higher thermal stability (ca. 30 °C) and enhanced mechanical properties (5 times increase in complex modulus), compared to the carboxylic acid analogue, N-lauroyl-l-alanine-COOH. These improved properties may be due to the additional hydrogen bonding in the primary amide analogue as revealed by SCXRD. Most significantly for this study, the introduction of the primary amide functionality enabled N-lauroyl-l-alanine-CONH2 to form a self-assembled fibrillar network in water. The aqueous network could then actively uptake and rapidly gel decane, diesel, and diluted bitumen ("dilbit") with MGCs of 2.5% w/v or less. This aqueous delivery method is advantageous for oil-remediation applications as no harmful carrier solvents are required and the gel can be easily separated from the water, allowing the oil to be recovered and the gelator recycled.

We report the synthesis, characterization, and spectroscopic investigations of a new responsive-at-metal cyclometalated platinum(II) complex. With mild chemical oxidants and reductants, it was possible to obtain the same complex in three different oxidation states and each of these complexes was structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. We discovered that the platinum(II) complex displays strong solvatochromism in the solid state, which can be attributed to modulation of Pt⋅⋅⋅Pt interactions that results in switching between optical and photoluminescent states. Incorporating responsive-at-metal species as dynamic components in nanostructured materials might facilitate response amplification, sensing, actuation, or self-healing processes.

Copper(I) complexes (Cu-DPSO and Cu-Me-DPSO) utilizing sulfoxide-bridged dipyridyl ligands are reported. Cu-DPSO demonstrates photophysical properties typical with [Cu(disphosphine)(diimine)]+ complexes, however with additional steric bulk in the 6- and 6′-positions of the diimine ligand to give complex Cu-Me-DPSO; the photophysics are greatly altered. This species is isolated as an amorphous powder (a-Cu-Me-DPSO) which emits yellow light; upon heating to 180 °C, a crystalline powder is formed (c-Cu-Me-DPSO) which shows a large bathochromic shift (>100 nm) in emission, and shows orange luminescence attributed to a flattening distortion of the complex away from a tetrahedral geometry. On cooling to −196 °C, c-Cu-Me-DPSO displays a reversible thermochromic solid-state emission, from orange at room temperature to yellow at low temperatures. Five new tris(N-salicylaldimine) (TSAN) analogues were prepared and characterized. NMR and single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies showed that they are found in different tautomeric forms, ranging from keto-enamine to enol-imine, with two showing intermediate behavior. We present a simple structural model governing the relative stability of the keto-enamine versus enol-imine tautomeric form of TSANs, based on experimental and theoretical findings on the new and existing TSAN analogues. Examination of electron delocalization throughout this range reveals a connection between tautomeric state and whether the substituent is σ or π electron withdrawing/donating. This can be used as a qualitative guide to design TSANs with controlled tautomeric behavior. These results will be helpful to the growing number of researchers in supramolecular chemistry who use TSANs to construct new materials and cages.

Copper(I) complexes are seen as more sustainable alternatives to those containing metal ions such as iridium and platinum for emitting devices. Copper(I) complexes have the ability to radiatively decay via a thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) pathway, leading to higher photoluminescent quantum yields. In this work we discuss six new heteroleptic Cu(I) complexes of the diphosphine–diimine motif. The diphosphine ligands employed are (oxydi- 2,1-phenylene)bis(diphenylphosphine) (DPEPhos) and the diimine fragments are sulfur- bridged dipyridyl ligands (DPS) which are functionalized at the 6,6′-positions of the pyridyl rings (R = H, Me, Ph), and have varying oxidation states at the bridging sulfur atom (S, SO2). The proton ( Cu-DPS, Cu-DPSO2 ) and phenyl ( Cu-Ph-DPS, Cu-Ph-DPSO2 ) substituted species are found to form monometallic complexes, while those with methyl substitution ( Cu-Me-DPS, Cu-Me-DPSO2 ) are found to have a “Goldilocks” degree of steric bulk leading to bimetallic species. All six Cu(I) complexes show emission in the solid state, with the photophysical properties characterized by low temperature steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopies and variable temperature time-correlated single photon counting (TCSPC). Cu- DPS , Cu-DPSO2 , Cu-Me-DPS , Cu-Me-DPSO2 and Cu-Ph-DPSO2 were shown to emit via a TADF mechanism, while Cu-Ph-DPS showed photoluminescence properties consistent with triplet ligand-centered (3LC) emission.
