Freshwater snails serve as one of trematodes’ intermediate hosts. Previous studies on trematode larval stages in the Philippines have largely focused on species with public health importance. This study sought to investigate the prevalence of cercarial morphotypes in several freshwater snail species found in different habitat types (rice field, irrigation canals, and residential area) in selected agricultural areas in Los Baños and Bay in Laguna. Cercarial emergence was induced through exposure to artificial light. A total of 2,720 freshwater snails were collected and were represented by seven species, namely, Melanoides tuberculata Muller 1774 (n = 1229), Radix quadrasi von Moellendorf (n = 630), Tarebia granifera Lamarck, 1816 (n = 417), Pomacea canaliculata Lamarck 1819 (n = 257), Vivipara angularis philippinensis Nevill (n = 18), Stenomelania sp. (n = 104), Thiara scabra Muller 1774 (n = 65). A 2.57 % over-all prevalence was recorded; the infected snail species were M. tuberculata (2.21 %), R. quadrasi (0.21 %), T. granifera (0.11 %). Four cercarial morphotypes, namely, Parapleurolophocercous cercaria (1.80 %), Virgulate xiphidiocercaria (0.26 %), Megaluruous cercaria (0.29 %), and Echinostome cercaria (0.22 %) were recovered from the infected snail species. Prevalence of cercarial infection was significantly different (p < 0.05) among habitat types.

- Abstract
Purpose. The study investigates the use of early forms of environmental accounting in the implementation of environmental strategies in the Grand Duchy of Tuscany between the 16th and 17th centuries. Design/methodology/approach. The study adopts the Foucauldian concept of raison d’État to shed light on the ways in which environmental accounting practices were used by Tuscan Grand Dukes to form a detailed knowledge of the territory to be governed and act accordingly. Findings. Financial and non-financial information relating to environmental issues enabled the Grand Dukes to ‘visualise’ the territory to be managed as an enclosed disciplinary space whereby the conduct of people living therein could be decisively influenced. Accounting practices as a tool for the implementation of environmental strategies did not merely aim to protect the environment but were a means to reinforce the power of the State. Research implications. The paper can inform future works that investigate the ways in which environmental policies and accounting are used to pursue far-reaching governmental goals. It encourages scholars to examine further the origins of environmental accounting and its early forms. Social implications. The study documents how environmental strategies and the related use of accounting can have a significant influence on how individuals are allowed to conduct themselves. It also shows that environmental accounting practices can be an important tool in a State’s machinery of power. Originality/value. The study offers a novel perspective on the use of environmental accounting information as a tool in the exercise of State power. It explores explicitly the interrelations between accounting, sustainability and power. It also adds new evidence to historical research that has engaged with early forms of environmental accounting.

- Abstract
Sport is one of the most popular forms of entertainment and its worldwide spread has turned athletes into icons who have economic impact and international visibility as global brands. In our paper we would like to show how marketing strategies in the sports industry, amplified by social networks, have put the athlete at the centre of media attention In the world of football, football players have come to play a key role, since their image is the face of their clubs, and this can affect the number of digital fans, that is, fans who are not bound to a club by constant passion but who can change team depending on the athletes that have been lined up. This could explain why the teams playing in the main football championships are offering higher and higher wages in the attempt to get hold of the best talents around. Based on a dataset with information about over 1,200 athletes who have taken part over five seasons of the Italian Serie A, we try to measure the impact of football players’ popularity on salary-setting mechanisms, in the attempt to understand the impact of such variables on football players’ athletic qualities and performance.

- Abstract
The legality rating represents an institutionalised indicator of firms’ ethical behaviour, introduced by the Italian legislative system. It certifies that firms fulfil certain requirements of legality and sustainability. By introducing the legality rating, the Italian legislator has institutionalised ethic values, recognizing and rewarding firms’ ethical behaviour. Banks are required to reward firms with legality rating, favouring them in the access to debt financing. Additionally, other stakeholder groups, such as employers, suppliers, governments and community may reward companies with legality rating, favouring them in the access to different financing sources, from bank loans (Kim et al., 2014; La Rosa et al., 2018) to trade credit (Xu et al., 2019; Zhang et al., 2014). Limited literature empirically investigates the legality rating and it is almost silent in relation to its effects on corporate financing (Caputo and Pizzi 2019). As far as we are aware, our study is the first study which deepens the investigation of the effects of legality rating on access to external financing, Our empirical investigation aims to study the effects of the legality rating on cost of debt and leverage level. We expect that legality rating increases the trust from the debt lender, leading to a decrease in the cost of debt and to an increase of the leverage level. To reach our aim, we use propensity score matching in an attempt to control for differences in the cost of debt and in the leverage level between all the Italian firms, which hold legality rating and all the Italian firms, which do not. We conduct the analysis by using a dataset of Italian firms, created by combining the financial data downloaded from AIDA database, with information about legality rating extracted from the official database of the Guarantor Authority for Competition and Market (AGCM) (AGCM, 2018)

Motivated by the issuance of International Accounting Standard 1 revised, this paper investigates reporting choices on the comprehensive Income of listed companies from Europe and the USA. This research aims at verifying the effects of the requirements issued by the International Accounting Standard 1 revised in improving performance evaluation towards the convergence between European and American Accounting Standards, our research tests the correlation between the choice of income statement format and different variables, such as the size of companies, sign of other comprehensive income, leverage and status of a US listing. This paper also evaluates the effect of comprehensive income on financial performance by calculating the return on equity. The main findings underline that the format of Income Statement and the “location” of the comprehensive income can be interpreted both as factors that can influence the choices of investors and as a tool available to managers to alter the communication of the firm’s performance choices

- Abstract
We analyze the effect of the introduction of stricter financial constraints on the trade-off between sporting and economic results. We apply a stochastic Cobb-Douglas production frontier model to a sample of Italian Serie A teams, i.e. first division, over the period 2005-2015 to evaluate the variation in soccer clubs' cost efficiency following the application of the UEFA Financial Fair Play (FFP) principles in 2010. FFP imposes stricter financial regulation as a requirement for a club to be admitted to Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) tournaments. Firstly, we find that FFP does not improve the average efficiency of the Italian first division teams. Secondly, we show that FFP has contributed to leveling the playing field, reducing the gap in terms of efficiency between top teams and lower-tier teams.

- Abstract
In this paper we analyse the efficiency of the sports betting market, seeking to ascertain whether the market is efficient in the case of fixed odds provided by bookmakers in the four major European soccer leagues under the semi-strong efficiency hypothesis. By examining the trends of odds in the event of a major change in expectations about team results, i.e. when the head coach of a team is replaced, we attempt to verify the argument that a profitable strategy for the bettor is likely to be possible. In this case, the market under consideration would be inefficient. Analysing the average effect of head coach replacement, we find a positive impact on team performance. Based on this information, we build a betting strategy to find out whether the bookmakers’ odds absorb this change in expectations about the winning probability of involved teams. Comparing our strategy result with a distribution generated in a Monte Carlo experiment, we conclude that the betting market is inefficient in its semi-strong form.

- Abstract
Purpose-The main objective of this study is to provide a judgment on the comparability of financial statements prepared under IFRS and US-GAAP. We developed two research questions for evaluating comparability within Europe (IFRS) and within the US (US GAAP) and for testing whether comparability is higher or lower when the US companies are included with the European countries. Design/Methodology/Approach-The T index framework was used to summarize the level of comparability for 13 accounting items using data from 250 companies. Findings-Empirical results are mixed. Of 13 accounting items considered, international comparability is significantly lower for 7 items and significantly higher for 4 items when the US companies are included. Furthermore, comparability amongst companies using IFRS is not consistently higher or lower than comparability amongst companies using US GAAP. Practical implications-Answers to the research questions may provide useful suggestions for IASB’s current policy direction towards global accounting standards convergence, and in particular for the IASB-FASB convergence project. The results also have implications for companies or countries considering shifting to IFRS or US GAAP. Research limitations/implications-Lack of comparability within countries, rather than between countries, suggests a need to focus on reducing options within standards rather than on differences between standards or countries. Originality value-Our empirical results show that in most cases lack of comparability may be driven by options within a standard rather than by explicit differences between standards

- Abstract
The financial crisis, which started in 2008, and the dramatic side effects that have ensued, have exacerbated a pre-existing problem related to ethics and legality. In Italy, for instance, the fact that the credit crunch has made it more difficult for entrepreneurs get access to credit, has forced many of them to resort to approaching money-lenders (loan sharks). Since 2012, the competent authorities have been working on a legislative process, culminating recently in Decree 62, which introduced a ‘legality rating’. This is a label for the most virtuous companies, both from a legal as well as a sustainability perspective. It also represents a reward system in terms of facilitation in obtaining bank credit and public subsidies. The legality rating forms part of the so-called ethic rating, in that it certifies that the company is not involved in any criminal, civil and/or administrative court cases, furthermore that the company implements internal procedures of corporate social responsibility and/or adheres to international ethical protocols. The rating is measured on a scale of one to three stars. This research aims to demonstrate some correlation between the adhesion of companies to ethical standards and their financial performance.

The electron temperature and density pedestals tend to vary in their relative radial positions, as observed in DIII-D (Beurskens et al 2011 Phys. Plasmas 18 056120) and ASDEX Upgrade (Dunne et al 2017 Plasma Phys. Control. Fusion 59 14017). This so-called relative shift has an impact on the pedestal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) stability and hence on the pedestal height (Osborne et al 2015 Nucl. Fusion 55 063018). The present work studies the effect of the relative shift on pedestal stability of JET ITER-like wall (JET-ILW) baseline low triangularity (δ) unseeded plasmas, and similar JET-C discharges. As shown in this paper, the increase of the pedestal relative shift is correlated with the reduction of the normalized pressure gradient, therefore playing a strong role in pedestal stability. Furthermore, JET-ILW tends to have a larger relative shift compared to JET carbon wall (JET-C), suggesting a possible role of the plasma facing materials in affecting the density profile location. Experimental results are then compared with stability analysis performed in terms of the peeling-ballooning model and with pedestal predictive model EUROPED (Saarelma et al 2017 Plasma Phys. Control. Fusion). Stability analysis is consistent with the experimental findings, showing an improvement of the pedestal stability, when the relative shift is reduced. This has been ascribed mainly to the increase of the edge bootstrap current, and to minor effects related to the increase of the pedestal pressure gradient and narrowing of the pedestal pressure width. Pedestal predictive model EUROPED shows a qualitative agreement with experiment, especially for low values of the relative shift. EURATOM 633053 Swedish Energy Agency 40146-1

The dependence of plasma transport and confinement on the main hydrogenic ion isotope mass is of fundamental importance for understanding turbulent transport and, therefore, for accurate extrapolations of confinement from present tokamak experiments, which typically use a single hydrogen isotope, to burning plasmas such as ITER, which will operate in deuterium-tritium mixtures. Knowledge of the dependence of plasma properties and edge transport barrier formation on main ion species is critical in view of the initial, low-activation phase of ITER operations in hydrogen or helium and of its implications on the subsequent operation in deuterium-tritium. The favourable scaling of global energy confinement time with isotope mass, which has been observed in many tokamak experiments, remains largely unexplained theoretically. Moreover, the mass scaling observed in experiments varies depending on the plasma edge conditions. In preparation for upcoming deuterium-tritium experiments in the JET tokamak with the ITER-like Be/W Wall (JET-ILW), a thorough experimental investigation of isotope effects in hydrogen, deuterium and tritium plasmas is being carried out, in order to provide stringent tests of plasma energy, particle and momentum transport models. Recent hydrogen and deuterium isotope experiments in JET-ILW on L-H power threshold, L-mode and H-mode confinement are reviewed and discussed in the context of past and more recent isotope experiments in tokamak plasmas, highlighting common elements as well as contrasting observations that have been reported. The experimental findings are discussed in the context of fundamental aspects of plasma transport models.

- Abstract
The objectives of the research are: 1) to investigate the reporting choices for the Comprehensive Income of 60 listed companies from Europe and the USA, through the analysis of data collected from the 2008, 2009 and 2012 consolidated financial statements; 2) to verify the impact of the requirements issued by the IAS 1 revised in improving performance disclosure. Our empirical research definitely belongs to the descriptive surveys, despite using some statistical methods, such as Cramer’s V index, R square and the point-biserial correlation coefficient, in order to test the correlation between the choice of the Income Statement format and the size of companies, the sign of Other Comprehensive Income, the leverage and the status of a US listing. Then we also evaluated the impact of the Comprehensive Income on the measure of financial performance by calculating the ROE. Results obtained underline that the format of the Income Statement and the “location” of the Comprehensive Income can be interpreted both as factors which can influence the choices of investors and as an instrument available to managers in order to alter the communication of the firm’s performance. The change in presentation options made by ASU 2011-05 is a relatively small step toward convergence because differences remain in how comprehensive income is calculated and reported under the two sets of standards. The real problem remains the continuing lack for a conceptual framework for the Comprehensive Income.

Erosion of plasma-facing materials and successive transport and redeposition of eroded material are crucial processes determining the lifetime of plasma-facing components and the trapped tritium inventory in redeposited material layers. Erosion and deposition in the JET divertor were studied during the second JET ITER-like wall campaign ILW-2 in 2013-2014 by using a poloidal row of specially prepared divertor marker tiles including the tungsten bulk tile 5. The marker tiles were analyzed using elastic backscattering with 3-4.5 MeV incident protons and nuclear reaction analysis using 0.8-4.5 MeV 3He ions before and after the campaign. The erosion/deposition pattern observed during ILW-2 is qualitatively comparable to the first campaign ILW-1 in 2011-2012: deposits consist mainly of beryllium with 5-20 at.% of carbon and oxygen and small amounts of Ni and W. The highest deposition with deposited layer thicknesses up to 30 μm per campaign is still observed on the upper and horizontal parts of the inner divertor. Outer divertor tiles 5, 6, 7 and 8 are net W erosion areas. The observed D inventory is roughly comparable to the inventory observed during ILW-1. The results obtained during ILW-2 therefore confirm the positive results observed in ILW-1 with respect to reduced material deposition and hydrogen isotopes retention in the divertor.

Post mortem analyses of JET ITER-Like-Wall tiles and passive diagnostics have been completed after each of the first two campaigns (ILW-1 and ILW-2). They show that the global fuel inventory is still dominated by co-deposition; hence plasma parameters and sputtering processes affecting material migration influence the distribution of retained fuel. In particular, differences between results from the two campaigns may be attributed to a greater proportion of pulses run with strike points in the divertor corners, and having about 300 discharges in hydrogen at the end of ILW-2. Recessed and remote areas can contribute to fuel retention due to the larger areas involved, e.g. recessed main chamber walls, gaps in castellated Be main chamber tiles and material migration to remote divertor areas. The fuel retention and material migration due to the bulk W Tile 5 during ILW-1 are presented. Overall these tiles account for only a small percentage of the global accountancy for ILW-1.

© 2017 Technical University of Denmark. We demonstrate the measurement of a 2D MeV-range ion velocity distribution function by velocity-space tomography at JET. Deuterium ions were accelerated into the MeV-range by third harmonic ion cyclotron resonance heating. We made measurements with three neutron emission spectrometers and a high-resolution γ-ray spectrometer detecting the γ-rays released in two reactions. The tomographic inversion based on these five spectra is in excellent agreement with numerical simulations with the ASCOT-RFOF and the SPOT-RFOF codes. The length of the measured fast-ion tail corroborates the prediction that very few particles are accelerated above 2 MeV due to the weak wave-particle interaction at higher energies.

The detection of GW170817 in both gravitational waves and electromagnetic waves heralds the age of gravitational-wave multi-messenger astronomy. On 17 August 2017 the Advanced LIGO and Virgo detectors observed GW170817, a strong signal from the merger of a binary neutron-star system. Less than 2 seconds after the merger, a gamma-ray burst (GRB 170817A) was detected within a region of the sky consistent with the LIGO-Virgo-derived location of the gravitational-wave source. This sky region was subsequently observed by optical astronomy facilities, resulting in the identification of an optical transient signal within $\sim 10$ arcsec of the galaxy NGC 4993. These multi-messenger observations allow us to use GW170817 as a standard siren, the gravitational-wave analog of an astronomical standard candle, to measure the Hubble constant. This quantity, which represents the local expansion rate of the Universe, sets the overall scale of the Universe and is of fundamental importance to cosmology. Our measurement combines the distance to the source inferred purely from the gravitational-wave signal with the recession velocity inferred from measurements of the redshift using electromagnetic data. This approach does not require any form of cosmic "distance ladder;" the gravitational wave analysis can be used to estimate the luminosity distance out to cosmological scales directly, without the use of intermediate astronomical distance measurements. We determine the Hubble constant to be $70.0^{+12.0}_{-8.0} \, \mathrm{km} \, \mathrm{s}^{-1} \, \mathrm{Mpc}^{-1}$ (maximum a posteriori and 68% credible interval). This is consistent with existing measurements, while being completely independent of them. Additional standard-siren measurements from future gravitational-wave sources will provide precision constraints of this important cosmological parameter., Comment: 26 pages, 5 figures, Nature in press. The objectives of the research are: 1)to investigate the reporting choices for the Comprehensive Income of 60 listed companies from Europe and the USA, through the analysis of data collected from the 2008, 2009 and 2012 consolidated financial statements; 2)to verify the impact of the requirements issued by the IAS 1 revised in improving performance disclosure.

- Abstract
The research aims at identifying the contribution of an Italian scholar, Giuseppe Cerboni (1827-1917), who lived the pre and post-Unitarian period, to the process of harmonization in the Italian business environment. Placement of Cerboni’s thought in the Italian school of accounting. It is possible to refer to different types of periodization (division into periods) of the history of accounting. If we refer to periodization made by Melis, according to the most significant sources (Melis, 1940), Giuseppe Cerboni (1827-1917) is in the last period beginning in 1840, the date of publication of the greatest work of Francesco Villa, considered the starting point of Accounting Science. If we use the periodization made Giannessi (Giannessi, 1971), Cerboni is positioned in the third phase (second half of the nineteenth century), characterized by the struggle to make accountancy raise to the status of science, and is inserted in the first period, called logismogical. • Concise statement of key research questions The two main areas of Cerboni’s literature will be the focus of the analysis: 1. definition of a business model of post-unity Italy; 2. definition of a unified accounting method: the “Logismografia”. The main research questions will be the following: • Is it possible to attribute to Cerboni the definition of a new business model capable of responding to the needs emerged from a new economic and social context, and in particular from the new production systems and asset-ownership of the post-unity industrial environment? • What was the role played by the creation of a new accounting method, the “Logismografia”, applied to both public and private companies? • Is it possible to identify in these studies the origins of the theory of the firm and of the agency theory (Jensen & Meckling, 1976; Fama, 1980)? In regard to the first area of research, the analysis will focus on the definition of administrative functions, the law of similarity of firms and the introduction of the

- Abstract

The exigency of reaching a definition of a unified set of accounting principle will not just result in the effective solution of the “Tower of Babel accounting” (Erikson et al., 2009) but also improve comparability of data, and financial and economic communication of stock markets. The recent process of accounting harmonisation made possible by the adoption in 2005 of IAS/IFRS methods represent the beginning of a practice tending to overcome the accounting differences not just at European level but more generally on a worldwide scale for the progressive adoption of a common global accounting language (Mc Gregor 1999; Pozzoli, 2003; Erikson et al., 2009). It emerges a super partes need for a project of convergence between the European discipline IAS/IFRS with the American accounting principles US GAAP, which justifies the progressive harmonisation of these two accounting systems (Tarca, 2005; Callagan, Treacy, 2007). This process of harmonisation would also represent a significant input for the globalisation of financial markets: accounting information could reach a great level of homogenisation to allow the comparison between financial, economic and capital data and the consequent improvement of economic and financial communication (Fisher, 2006; Hussein, 2007). The coexistence of two sets of accounting standards in the U.S. market and the need highlighted by the two standard setters to promote the convergence process are the main reasons behind the empirical research that is the object of this paper. We investigate these questions using the 2008-2009 and 2012 IFRS annual reports of companies based in four European countries: France, Germany, Italy and the UK and the 2009 US-GAAP annual reports of companies based in the US. The main purpose of our research is to evaluate the differences (Bloomer, 1996; Ampofo & Sellani, 2005; PwC, 2012; Kvaal & Nobes, 2010; 2011) on the reporting performance choices between the two accounting standards, respectively IFRS and U.S. GAAP.The main objectives of this research are the following ones: OB1:to analyse the way of reporting of the comprehensive income within the Annual Report of listed European and American companies during the two-year period 2008-2009 and in 2012; OB2: to verify the impact of the requirements issued by the IAS 1 revised referring to the presence of some performance indicators and the improvement of the performance disclosure within the Annual Report. The first goal OB1 requires the following researches to be the developed: 1) the check of the number of Income Statement tables. For the sample of European companies (2009), it is provided a choice between two alternatives, namely a single statement or two separate statements, while on the basis of FAS 130 it is considered a choice among three alternatives i.e. in addition to the ones already highlighted it is possible to expose other comprehensive income in the statement of changes in net assets (Statement of changes in equity); 2) ways for exposing the intermediate results (in particular verification of the presence of the operating result); 3) ways for exposing the income related to the financial area (especially verification of the presence of the balance between financial income and expenses); 4) highlight of the income of an extraordinary nature; 5) criteria for classification of costs, by nature or by function. The second objective OB2 requires the following researches to be the carried out: 1. calculation of ROE in two different ways: ROENI (Net Income) and ROECI (Comprehensive Income); 2. checking for the presence of NON-GAAP measures related to performance in the narrative section of the Annual Report and possible indication of the number and type of indicators calculated; 3. verification of the significance of OCI and the volatility of comprehensive income compared to net income.

In regard to the first area of research, the analysis will focus on the definition of administrative functions, the law of similarity of firms and the introduction of the concept of corporate accountability, which was partially influenced by the account personalistic theory (Cerboni, 1886; 1894; 1902). The transformation of asset-ownership will be analysed through the lens of the theory of the firm, which, in the opinion of the authors, was anticipated by the firm model defined by Cerboni. (Holson, 1981; Hawkins, 1969; Jensen & Meckling, 1970; Ross, 1973; Haugen & Senbet, 1979; Fama, 1980). In the second area of research, the technical methods of accounting acquire stronger relevance mainly in the context of post-unity industrial environment. The analysis will then focus on whether the “Logismografia” had the potential to adequately represent the economic and financial situation of the companies of the time, reaching a "revolutionary juncture" between private and public accounting (Mattesich, 2003). Should this be confirmed, it could be stated that Italy not only achieved political but also accounting unity (Cavour, Acts of the Sub-Alpine Parliament, 1867).
