Abstract

This review of the literature on varietal change in sub-Saharan Africa looks in detail at adoption of new varieties of bananas in Uganda, cassava in Nigeria, potato in Kenya, sweetpotato in Uganda and yams in C^ote d'Ivoire. The review explored three hypotheses about drivers of varietal change. There was a strong confirmation for the hypothesis that insufficient priority given to consumer-preferred traits by breeding programmes contributes to the limited uptake of modern varieties (MVs) and low varietal turnover. Lack of evidence meant the second hypothesis of insufficient attention to understanding and responding to gender differences in consumer preferences for quality and post-harvest traits was unresolved. The evidence on the third hypothesis about the informal seed system contributing to slow uptake of MVs was mixed. In some cases, the informal system has contributed to rapid uptake of MVs, but often it appears to be a barrier with inconsistent varietal naming a major challenge.

Abstract

In extant chordates, the overall patterning along the anteroposterior and dorsoventral axes of the neural tube is remarkably conserved. It has thus been proposed that four domains corresponding to the vertebrate presumptive forebrain, midbrain-hindbrain transition, hindbrain, and spinal cord were already present in the common chordate ancestor. To obtain insights on the evolution of the patterning of the anterior neural tube, we performed a study aimed at characterizing the expression of regulatory genes in the sensory vesicle of Ciona intestinalis, the anteriormost part of the central nervous system (CNS) related to the vertebrate forebrain, at tailbud stages. Selected genes encoded primarily for homologues of transcription lectors involved in vertebrate forebrain patterning. Seven of these genes were expressed in the ventral sensory vesicle. A prominent feature of these ascidian genes is their restricted and complementary domains of expression at tailbud stages. These patterning markers thus refine the map of the developing sensory vesicle. Furthermore, they allow us to propose that a large part of the ventral and lateral sensory vesicle consists in a patterning domain corresponding to the vertebrate presumptive hypothalamus. Abstract

Although some mechanistic aspects of exocytosis, such as fusion events, have been well documented by the technique of time-resolved membrane-capacitance measurement, it was only recently that new insights into the molecular mechanisms involved in the traffic of secretory vesicles were provided by the convergence of different lines of research. In this review Lledo et al. present some of the recent findings concerning small GTPases of the Rab3 subfamily whic regulate hormone release, triggered by entry of [Ca.sup.2+], in endocrine and neuroendocrine cells. In view of these new results, Rab proteins might be considered as candidates for inhibition or stimulation of specific steps involved in vesicle traffic.

Abstract

The expression of Rab3B, a protein of the Rab3 subfamily, is specifically obstructed by antisense oligonucleotides against Rab3B introduced into pituitary cells, through the whole-cell patch clamp method. Without influencing endocytosis, calcium-dependent exocytosis is impeded. No influence was observed in antisense oligonucleotides directed against Rab3A. Exocytosis downstream of other calcium-dependent mechanisms in anterior pituitary cells may be regulated by Rab3B, which is a crucial intracellular signalling molecule.
