Abstract

We report on observations of the extended environment of the bright Be star $\gamma$-Cas performed using intensity interferometry measurements within its H$\alpha$ emission line. These observations were performed using a modified version of the I2C intensity interferometry instrument installed onto the 1.54 meter M\'{e}O optical metrology telescope and a portable 1-meter telescope (T1M). In order to better constrain the extent of the H$\alpha$ envelope, observations were performed for two different positions of the T1M telescope, corresponding to an intermediate and long baselines in which the extended region was partially and fully resolved. We find that the observed data are consistent with past interferometric observations of $\gamma$-Cas. These observations demonstrate the capability to equip optical telescopes of different optical designs with intensity interferometry capabilities and illustrate the potential to scale a similar system onto many additional telescopes.

Abstract

We present the current status of the I2C stellar intensity interferometer used towards high angular resolution observations of stars in visible wavelengths. In these proceedings, we present recent technical improvements to the instrument, and share results from ongoing campaigns using arrays of small diameter optical telescopes. A tip-tilt adaptive optics unit was integrated into the optical system to stabilize light injection into an optical fiber. The setup was successfully tested with several facilities on the Calern Plateau site of the Observatoire de la C\^ote d'Azur. These include one of the 1 m diameter telescopes of the C2PU observatory, a portable 1 m diameter telescope, and also the 1.5 m M\'eO telescope. To better constrain on-sky measurements, the spectral transmission of instrument was characterized in the laboratory using a high resolution spectrograph. The system was also tested with two of the auxiliary telescopes of the VLTI resulting in successful temporal and spatial correlation measurements of three stars.

Abstract

In this paper we report on spatial intensity interferometry measurements within the H$\alpha$ line on two stars: the Luminous Blue Variable supergiant \PCygni\,and the late-type B supergiant Rigel. The experimental setup was upgraded to allow simultaneous measurement of two polarization channels, instead of one in our previous setup, and the zero baseline correlation function on-sky to validate independent estimates obtained from the stellar spectrum and the instrumental spectral throughput. Combined with simultaneous spectra measurements and based on radiative transfer models calculated with the code CMFGEN, we were able to fit our measured visibility curves to extract the stellar distances. Our distance determinations for both \PCygni\ (1.61 $\pm$ 0.18 kpc) and Rigel (0.26 $\pm$ 0.02 kpc) agree very well with the values provided by astrometry with the Gaia and Hipparcos missions, respectively. This result for Rigel was obtained by adopting a stellar luminosity of $L_{\star}$ = 123000 $L_{\odot}$, which is reported in the literature as being consistent with the Hipparcos distance to Rigel. However, due to the lack of consensus on Rigel's luminosity, we also explore how the adoption of the stellar luminosity in our models affects our distance determination for Rigel. In conclusion, we support, in an independent way, the distance to Rigel as the one provided by the Hipparcos mission, when taking the luminosity of 123000 $L_{\odot}$ at face value. Abstract

In December 2018, the main-belt asteroid (6478)~Gault was reported to display activity. Gault is an asteroid belonging to the Phocaea dynamical family and was not previously known to be active, nor was any other member of the Phocaea family. In this work we present the results of photometric and spectroscopic observations that commenced soon after the discovery of activity. We obtained observations over two apparitions to monitor its activity, rotation period, composition, and possible non-gravitational orbital evolution. We find that Gault has a rotation period of $P = 2.4929 \pm 0.0003$ hours with a lightcurve amplitude of $0.06$ magnitude. This short rotation period close to the spin barrier limit is consistent with Gault having a density no smaller than $\rho = 1.85$~g/cm$^3$ and its activity being triggered by the YORP spin-up mechanism. Analysis of the Gault phase curve over phase angles ranging from $0.4^{\circ}$ to $23.6^{\circ}$ provides an absolute magnitude of $H = 14.81 \pm 0.04$, $G1=0.25 \pm 0.07$, and $G2= 0.38 \pm 0.04$. Model fits to the phase curve find the surface regolith grain size constrained between 100-500 $\rm{\mu}$m. Using relations between the phase curve and albedo we determine that the geometrical albedo of Gault is $p_{\rm v} = 0.26 \pm 0.05$ corresponding to an equivalent diameter of $D = 2.8^{+0.4}_{-0.2}$ km. Our spectroscopic observations are all consistent with an ordinary chondrite-like composition (S, or Q-type in the Bus-DeMeo taxonomic classification). A search through archival photographic plate surveys found previously unidentified detections of Gault dating back to 1957 and 1958. Only the latter had been digitized, which we measured to nearly double the observation arc of Gault. Abstract

We recently proposed a new lucky imaging technique, the Power Spectrum Extended (PSE), adapted for image reconstruction of short-exposure astronomical images in case of weak turbulence or partial adaptive optics correction. In this communication we show applications of this technique to observations of about 30 binary stars in H band with the 1m telescope of the Calern C2PU observatory. Abstract

We present visible and near-infrared photometric and spectroscopic observations of interstellar object 2I/Borisov taken from 2019 September 10 to 2019 November 29 using the GROWTH, the APO ARC 3.5 m and the NASA/IRTF 3.0 m combined with post and pre-discovery observations of 2I obtained by ZTF from 2019 March 17 to 2019 May 5. Comparison with imaging of distant Solar System comets shows an object very similar to mildly active Solar System comets with an out-gassing rate of $\sim$10$^{27}$ mol/sec. The photometry, taken in filters spanning the visible and NIR range shows a gradual brightening trend of $\sim0.03$ mags/day since 2019 September 10 UTC for a reddish object becoming neutral in the NIR. The lightcurve from recent and pre-discovery data reveals a brightness trend suggesting the recent onset of significant H$_2$O sublimation with the comet being active with super volatiles such as CO at heliocentric distances $>$6 au consistent with its extended morphology. Using the advanced capability to significantly reduce the scattered light from the coma enabled by high-resolution NIR images from Keck adaptive optics taken on 2019 October 04, we estimate a diameter of 2I's nucleus of $\lesssim$1.4 km. We use the size estimates of 1I/'Oumuamua and 2I/Borisov to roughly estimate the slope of the ISO size-distribution resulting in a slope of $\sim$3.4$\pm$1.2, similar to Solar System comets and bodies produced from collisional equilibrium., Comment: 22 pages, 7 figures, 1 table. Abstract

Recent advances in photonics have revived the interest in intensity interferometry for astronomical applications. The success of amplitude interferometry in the early 1970s, which is now mature and producing spectacular astrophysical results (e.g. GRAVITY, MATISSE, CHARA, etc.), coupled with the limited sensitivity of intensity interferometry stalled any progress on this technique for the past 50 years. However, the precise control of the optical path difference in amplitude interferometry is constraining for very long baselines and at shorter wavelengths. Polarization measurements are also challenging in amplitude interferometry due to instrumental effects. The fortuitous presence of strong groups in astronomical interferometry and quantum optics at Universite Cote d'Azur led to the development of a prototype experiment at Calern Observatory, allowing the measure of the temporal correlation g(2)(\tau, r=0) in 2016 and of the spatial correlation g^(2)(r) in 2017 with a gain in sensitivity (normalized in observing time and collecting area) of a factor ~100 compared to Hanbury Brown and Twiss's original Narrabri Interferometer. We present possible ways to further develop this technique and point to possible implementations on existing facilities, such as CTA, the VLTI ATs or the summit of Maunakea, which offer a unique scientific niche., Comment: SPIE Conference proceedings, 12 pages

More than sixty years after the first intensity correlation experiments by Hanbury Brown and Twiss, there is renewed interest for intensity interferometry techniques for high angular resolution studies of celestial sources. We report on a successful attempt to measure the bunching peak in the intensity correlation function for bright stellar sources with 1 meter telescopes (I2C project). Abstract

In 2016 May, the intermediate polar FO~Aqr was detected in a low state for the first time in its observational history. We report time-resolved photometry of the system during its initial recovery from this faint state. Our data, which includes high-speed photometry with cadences of just 2 sec, shows the existence of very strong periodicities at 22.5 min and 11.26 min, equivalent to the spin-orbit beat frequency and twice its value, respectively. A pulse at the spin frequency is also present but at a much lower amplitude than is normally observed in the bright state. By comparing our power spectra with theoretical models, we infer that a substantial amount of accretion was stream-fed during our observations, in contrast to the disk-fed accretion that dominates the bright state. In addition, we find that FO~Aqr's rate of recovery has been unusually slow in comparison to rates of recovery seen in other magnetic cataclysmic variables, with an $e$-folding time of 115$\pm7$ days. The recovery also shows irregular variations in the median brightness of as much as 0.2~mag over a 10-day span. Finally, we show that the arrival times of the spin pulses are dependent upon the system's overall brightness., Comment: Accepted for publication at ApJ. International audience; This paper presents orbits and masses for 22 visual double stars, partly derived using their last observations made with the speckle camera PISCO. For 13 of them we have determined their first time orbits. Masses were calculated from Hipparcos and Gaia parallaxes when available, and from dynamical parallaxes otherwise. They are compared with masses deduced from spectral types. Abstract

We present visible and near-infrared photometric and spectroscopic observations of interstellar object 2I/Borisov taken from 2019 September 10 to 2019 November 29 using the GROWTH, the APO ARC 3.5 m and the NASA/IRTF 3.0 m combined with post and pre-discovery observations of 2I obtained by ZTF from 2019 March 17 to 2019 May 5. Comparison with imaging of distant Solar System comets shows an object very similar to mildly active Solar System comets with an out-gassing rate of $\sim$10$^{27}$ mol/sec. The photometry, taken in filters spanning the visible and NIR range shows a gradual brightening trend of $\sim0.03$ mags/day since 2019 September 10 UTC for a reddish object becoming neutral in the NIR. The lightcurve from recent and pre-discovery data reveals a brightness trend suggesting the recent onset of significant H$_2$O sublimation with the comet being active with super volatiles such as CO at heliocentric distances $>$6 au consistent with its extended morphology. Using the advanced capability to significantly reduce the scattered light from the coma enabled by high-resolution NIR images from Keck adaptive optics taken on 2019 October 04, we estimate a diameter of 2I's nucleus of $\lesssim$1.4 km. We use the size estimates of 1I/'Oumuamua and 2I/Borisov to roughly estimate the slope of the ISO size-distribution resulting in a slope of $\sim$3.4$\pm$1.2, similar to Solar System comets and bodies produced from collisional equilibrium., 22 pages, 7 figures, 1 table. Abstract

En la mayoría de congresos, las sesiones de pósteres que se organizan acostumbran a tener un éxito bastante limitado debido normalmente al enfoque claramente distinto de sus trabajos y a la falta de integración de los mismos con las aportaciones realizadas en los otros trabajos. A su vez, muchas son las ocasiones en las que en las sesiones de pósteres no se consigue sacar de ellas todo el jugo que se debería, ya sea por falta de entusiasmo de los asistentes o por su escasez de preguntas. En este trabajo se reflexiona sobre este hecho, se analizan los diferentes problemas referentes a las sesiones de pósteres y se presenta una nueva dinámica basada en la ludificación de la sesión, la cual fue implantada en las JENUI 2015. El objetivo fue mejorar la calidad de las Jornadas y conseguir una alta participación de los asistentes a este evento. Se presentan cuáles son los actores que intervienen en dicha sesión, los factores clave, la dinámica de la sesión usando esta estrategia, así como los resultados exitosos obtenidos de dicha experiencia. In most conferences, poster sessions have limited success because the different approach of the presented works and a lack of integration of these with the contributions made in other papers. In turn, there are many occasions that the poster sessions are not used as they should, either for lack of enthusiasm of the participants or their lack of questions. This paper reflects different issues regarding the poster sessions. They are analyzed and a new dynamic based on the gamification of the session is introduced, which was tested in JENUI 2015. The aim was to improve the quality of the conference getting a better participation of the people attending this event. The actors involved in the session, the key factors and the dynamics of the session using this strategy are presented as well as the successful results of this experience.

Abstract

En los últimos años han aparecido múltiples propuestas orientadas a hacer el aprendizaje más atractivo para los alumnos; desde el ya clásico Aprendizaje Basado en Problemas, incluyendo el Scenario Centered Curriculum, hasta los innovadores planteamientos pedagógicos basados en la gamificación. Todas estas aportaciones, aparte de mejorar la calidad de la enseñanza, persiguen un denominador común: despertar la motivación en el alumnado para el aprendizaje. Estas medologías han contribuido a mejorar sustancialmente los resultados específicos de las asignaturas en las que se han aplicado. Sin embargo, dado que las capacidades y la disponibilidad de los alumnos y alumnas no son ilimitadas, el hecho de hacer una asignatura más atractiva para el aprendizaje podría conducirles a reducir su grado de implicación en otras materias del mismo curso. De hecho, pocas son las veces en las que se hace un análisis de los efectos que puede tener el hecho de (sobre)estimular la motivación en una determinada asignatura sobre el resto de asignaturas. Así, el propósito de este artículo es invitar a la reflexión acerca de los daños colaterales que pueden aparecen como resultado de sobremotivar a los alumnos en una asignatura determinada. Concretamente, se realiza un análisis en tres asignaturas del Grado en Informática en las cuales se han aplicado estas nuevas estrategias pedagógicas. El resultado de dicho análisis sugiere que estas nuevas metodologías docentes deben aplicarse de manera transversal en todas las asignaturas de un mismo curso con el fin de obtener un nivel de motivación uniforme y una mejora evidente en la asimilación de los contenidos de todo el plan de estudios. SUMMARY -- In the recent years, several strategies have been proposed to boost the students learning effectiveness; from the already established Project Based Learning, including its variant Scenario Centered Curriculum, to innovative educational approaches based in appealing concepts such as gamification. Besides improving the teaching quality, all these proposals are actually committed to pursue another important goal: stimulate motivation towards learning. According to the latest contributions, such appealing proposals have considerably contributed to enhance the specific academic results of those subjects in which they have been applied. However, as students capabilities and availability are not unlimited, making a subject more appealing could drive them to reduce their involvement in other subjects of the same course. In fact, no broader analyses are often conducted to measure the consequences of (over)stimulating students on a specific subject. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to discuss the side effects from overstimulating students on a given scenario through new teaching methodologies. More specifically, such discussion is based on analysis conducted over three subjects of the Computing Engineering degree in which these new teaching methodologies are being applied. Presented results encourage practitioners to apply these new teaching techniques horizontally to all subjects in the same course—rather than focusing on a specific one—and, thus, drive students to reach an uniform motivation degree over all subjects to gain the same amount of knowledge from every matter.

Abstract

En el presente artículo presentamos un recurso docente capaz de aglutinar en una misma plataforma prácticas de diversa índole. Dicho recurso se trata de un robot autónomo cuyo montaje y dotación de funcionalidades se distribuye entre las distintas asignaturas que cursará el alumno durante su formación como ingeniero. Esto es posible a partir de un proyecto con carácter interdisciplinar que supone una mayor asimilación de competencias y un considerable aumento de la motivación del alumno. En la primera parte del artículo nos centraremos en la presentación del proyecto global, en cuáles han sido los vínculos en cada asignatura y qué resultados se han obtenido en el tramo formativo sobre el que se ha implantado el proyecto. En la segunda parte, analizaremos el rendimiento y el grado de satisfacción alcanzado por parte de los diferentes actores del proyecto, así como el nivel de cohesión logrado, objetivo indispensable para que el lema "el robot que crece contigo", lema central del proyecto, se haga realidad. SUMMARY -- In this paper we present a teaching resource capable of uniting in a single platform practices of various kinds. This resource is an autonomous robot whose assembly and equipping of functionality is distributed among the various subjects coursed by the student during his training as an engineer. This is possible from an interdisciplinary project involving greater assimilation of skills and a considerable increase in student motivation. First of all, we focus on the presentation of the overall project, in what were the links in each subject and what results have been obtained in the formative stage on which the project has been implemented. Finally we point out the degree of satisfaction achieved by the different actors in the project and the level of cohesion achieved essential goal for the slogan "the robot that grows with you," with tha aim that the central theme of the project becomes a reality.
