Abstract

Background: Dental pulp, encapsulating a blood drop, could be used to diagnose pathogen bacteraemia in archaeological materials using DNA-based techniques. We questioned the viability of such ancient pathogens preserved in ancient dental pulp. Methods: After meticulous decontamination of 32 teeth collected from 31 World War I soldiers exhumed in Spincourt, France, dental pulps were extracted and cultured under strict anaerobiosis. Colonies were identified by mass spectrometry and whole genome sequencing. Fluorescent in situ hybridisation (FISH) was used for the direct microscopic detection of pathogens of interest in the dental pulp. All the experimental procedures included negative controls, notably sediments in contact with individual SQ517 to ensure that results did not arise from contamination. Findings: Clostridium tertium was detected by FISH in two dental pulp specimens taken from a 1914 soldier. After a two-day incubation period, both dental pulp samples grew colonies identified by mass spectrometry and genome sequencing as C. tertium; whereas negative controls remained free of C. tertium in all the observations, and no C. tertium was founded in sediments. Skeletal remains of this soldier exhibited two notches in the left tibia evocative of a cold steel wound, and a probably fatal unhealed bullet impact in the hip bone. Interpretation: Data indicated the presence of C. tertium in the dental pulp at the time of the death of one World War I soldier, in 1914. This observation diagnosed C. tertium bacteraemia, with war wounds as the probable portal of entry for C. tertium. Our C. tertium strains ante-dated by three years, the princeps description of this deadly opportunistic pathogen.

7. Performance Appraisal in an Academic Library: A Case Study.

Abstract

Well-designed performance appraisals should provide employees with feedback concerning their performance, serve as a basis for modifying behavior toward more effective work habits, and provide managers with data which they can use to judge future job assignments and compensation. Poorly-designed ones, used as short-term control systems, can create fear and mistrust. Performance appraisals can be very valuable, but they have been largely neglected because of the time and effort needed for data collection. This paper describes changes made in the performance appraisal process at the Mona (Jamaica) Campus of the University of the West Indies. The old review system included assessment by supervisors, review by a committee of peers, and review by the Library Assessing Committee. The new appraisal process, in step with Total Quality management (TQM), begins with the assessee submitting a form on which he has identified both his achievements and areas for improvement. A questionnaire was administered eliciting the responses of professional staff members to both systems, and 15 of 22 were returned. Survey responses indicated that staff were unclear about the library's goals and their own duties. They disliked the perceived subjectivity of the appraisals, the limited scope for registering disagreements, and the emphasis on publications. As for the new process, respondents liked the idea of self-evaluation and liked the form itself but were unhappy about not being asked to participate in its development. The new system may continue to work if used in conjunction with other TQM principles like direct communication, setting the right goals, empowerment and training. Abstract

Introduction Although circumstantial evidence suggests children with tic disorders (TD) experience challenges in handwriting which may be attributed to their tics, few studies have systematically investigated handwriting performance among children with TD. This study examined the relationship between handwriting deficits and TD using a causal comparative research design. Methods Thirty-four children with TD completed the Test of Handwriting Skills-Revised (THS-R). The overall percentile ranks of the THS-R were analysed to determine if children with TD have lower scores compared to the test's normative values. Writing speed, letter reversals, touching letters and case errors were also evaluated. Results Data revealed the median percentile rank of the THS-R for the participants was significantly lower than the median percentile score of the THS-R for the normative sample. Close to 80% (n = 27) of writing samples were scored below 50th percentile. More than one-third (35.3%, n = 12) of the writing samples were scored greater than one standard deviation below the normative mean on the THS-R. Of the four ancillary scores, 82.4% (n = 28) of the participants' writing samples scored below 50th percentile (in the categories of watch or test further) on case errors and 67.6% (n = 23) scored below 50th percentile on writing speed. Conclusion Findings suggested that children with TD took longer to complete the writing task, and committed more case substitution errors than the normative sample of the THS-R and were likely to exhibit handwriting deficits.

Abstract

Using data from the National Survey of Midlife Development in the United States and using the stress process model, this study compared caregiving parents and caregiving adult children with regard to health outcomes. The study sample consisted of 74 caregiving parents and 219 caregiving adult children. Predictors included type of family relationship, provision of activities of daily living, duration of caregiving, and family demands. Social support did not mediate the relations between significant predictor variables and health outcomes. The type of family relationship was associated with health outcomes with caregiving parents demonstrating poorer self-perceived health and more chronic conditions than caregiving adult children. Perceived family demands were associated with increased number of chronic conditions for caregiving adult children and caregiving parents. Unlike previous studies that measured objective family demands, perceived family demands was found to have a strong association with the number of chronic health conditions for both groups of caregivers.
