BackgroundEffective clinical decision support systems require accurate translation of practice recommendations into machine-readable artifacts; developing code sets that represent clinical concepts are an important step in this process. Many clinical coding systems are currently used in electronic health records, and it is unclear whether all of these systems are capable of efficiently representing the clinical concepts required in executing clinical decision support systems. ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to evaluate which clinical coding systems are capable of efficiently representing clinical concepts that are necessary for translating artifacts into executable code for clinical decision support systems. MethodsTwo methods were used to evaluate a set of clinical coding systems. In a theoretical approach, we extracted all the clinical concepts from 3 preventive care recommendations and constructed a series of code sets containing codes from a single clinical coding system. In a practical approach using data from a real-world setting, we studied the content of 1890 code sets used in an internationally available clinical decision support system and compared the usage of various clinical coding systems. ResultsSNOMED CT and ICD-10 (International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision) proved to be the most accurate clinical coding systems for most concepts in our theoretical evaluation. In our practical evaluation, we found that International Classification of Diseases (Tenth Revision) was most often used to construct code sets. Some coding systems were very accurate in representing specific types of clinical concepts, for example, LOINC (Logical Observation Identifiers Names and Codes) for investigation results and ATC (Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical Classification) for drugs. ConclusionsNo single coding system seems to fulfill all the needs for representing clinical concepts for clinical decision support systems. Comprehensiveness of the coding systems seems to be offset by complexity and forms a barrier to usability for code set construction. Clinical vocabularies mapped to multiple clinical coding systems could facilitate clinical code set construction.

Background: The postpartum period presents critical challenges for new mothers, involving significant physical and emotional adjustments. Traditionally, Chinese culture has addressed this phase through "doing the month," emphasizing rest and specific cultural practices. Modernization in urban China has led to a rise in professional maternal care centers, yet research on women's experiences and expectations in these settings remains limited. This study aims to explore the experiences, perspectives, and expectations of postpartum women who utilize hospital-based maternity care centers, focusing on the integration of traditional practices with modern healthcare standards. Methods: In this study, 16 participants who had utilized the hospital's maternal care center within the previous year were chosen via purposive sampling in Qingdao, China. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed employing The Qualitative Analysis Guide of Leuven (QUAGOL), a framework ensuring transparency and depth in identifying and interpreting themes. Results: Analysis revealed three main themes: co-created health management, shared knowledge and growth, and interpersonal connections and support. The study highlighted the benefits of a collaborative approach to healthcare, where personalized care and maternal autonomy were prioritized. It also pointed out the educational aspect of motherhood, emphasizing the role of community support and shared experiences. Furthermore, the study highlighted the positive impact of social dynamics, such as family, peer, and professional support, emphasizing their crucial contribution to the postpartum recovery process. Conclusion: This study underscores the importance of integrating traditional postpartum practices with modern healthcare, focusing on co-created health management, shared knowledge and growth, and interpersonal connections and support. These elements significantly enhance maternal well-being, addressing both physical and psychosocial needs. These results highlight the importance of culturally sensitive care tailored to the societal and cultural contexts of postpartum women in China. Practical recommendations include enhancing personalized care models and strengthening support networks within healthcare systems to better meet mothers' needs. These findings provide a foundation for improving postpartum care policies and practices, with implications for creating more supportive environments for new mothers. Future studies are encouraged to expand the participant diversity, explore diverse cultural settings, and apply quantitative methods to validate these outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims and objectives: Gaining insight in how people living with chronic conditions experience primary healthcare within their informal network. Background: The primary healthcare system is challenged by the increasing number of people living with chronic conditions. To strengthen chronic care management, literature and policy plans point to a person‐centred approach of care (PCC). A first step to identify an appropriate strategy to implement PCC is to gain more insight into the care experiences of these people and their informal caregivers. Design: A phenomenological‐hermeneutical philosophy is used. The study is in line with the Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research Guidelines (COREQ). Method: In‐depth, semi‐structured interviews with people living with chronic conditions and informal caregiver dyads (PCDs) (n = 16; 32 individuals) were conducted. An open‐ended interview guide was used to elaborate on the PCDs' experiences regarding primary care. A purposive, maximal variation sampling was applied to recruit the participants. Results: Based on sixteen PCDs' reflections, ten themes were identified presenting their experiences with primary care and described quality care as listening and giving attention to what people with chronic conditions want, to what they strive for, and above all to promote their autonomy in a context wherein they are supported by a team of formal caregivers, family and friends. Conclusion: To meet the PCDs' needs, self‐management should be addressed in an interprofessional environment in which the PCD is an important partner. The findings may facilitate a shift to encourage PCDs in their strengths by enabling them to share their personal goals and by working towards meaningful activities in team collaboration. Relevance to clinical practice: Three strategies—self‐management support, goal‐oriented care, and interprofessional collaboration—have been suggested to improve the PCDs' primary care experiences.
