Abstract

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are widely used in a variety of sectors, including the surveillance, healthcare, and military, and so on. The high cost and short lifespan of wireless sensor networks prohibit emerging and low-income nations for using their benefits. This article proposes a compact, low cost, and broadband coplanar waveguide rectenna with a simple novel ground plane operate in band range of 4.8–5.5 GHz (700 MHz) for an effective solution to radio frequency (RF) energy harvesting applications in WSNs. A parametric study of distinct antennas is also conducted to strengthen the attributes of the proposed antenna. The defected ground structure created on the co-plane offers 105° measured half power beamwidth (HPBW) in the H-plane for wide angular coverage. As a result, design alignment does not need to be extremely perfect in order to make conversion efficiency constant. The rectifying circuit is made compact by using a two-stub impedance matching network. At load resistance of 1k Ω, the power conversion efficiency of the proposed rectenna for a low input power level of −10 dBm is 27.2% (simulated) and 20.1% (measured) while its maximum value is 52.5% (simulated) and 50.1% (measured) for input power level of 10 dBm. Abstract

This paper presents a gap coupled triple band slot loaded microstrip patch antenna with parasitic patches. It consist inverted U‐shape and inverted T‐shape open‐ended slots along with a rectangular slot at center of patch. The inverted U‐shape open‐ended slot generates a driven patch at bottom side and an inverted U‐shape parasitic patch at middle side of patch while inverted T‐shape open‐ended slot generates two rectangular shape parasitic patches of same dimension at top side of patch. The proposed gap coupled antenna covers 2.29 to 2.77 GHz in first band, 3.25 to 3.65 GHz in second band and 4.67 to 5.72 GHz in third band with return losses of −23.2, −19.90, and −38.06 dB, respectively. The proposed antenna resonates at 2.57, 3.48, and 5.37 GHz with fractional bandwidth of 18.97% (480 MHz), 11.59% (400 MHz), and 20.21% (1050 MHz), respectively. The return loss and bandwidth of presented antenna is increases gradually by loading inverted U‐shape and inverted T‐shape open‐ended slots along with a rectangular slot in antenna patch. The proposed antenna exhibits stable peak gain of 4.45, 4.81, and 5.26 dBi and efficiency of 89.5%, 89%, and 90% in three resonating bands. The antenna resonating bands are applicable for WiMAX: 2.5/3.5/5.5 GHz (2.5–2.69, 3.4–3.69, and 5.25–5.85 GHz), WLAN: 2.4/5.2 GHz (2.4–2.484 and 5.15–5.35 GHz) and sub‐6 GHz 5G: 3.5 GHz (3.3–3.8 GHz). The size of antenna is 40 mm × 50 mm (0.34 × 0.43λ02$$ 0.43{\lambda}_0^2 $$ at frequency 2.57 GHz). Abstract

A compact two-port novel geometry with microstrip fed wide slot equivalent circuit based dual-band MIMO antenna system of low specific absorption rate is presented. The proposed structure has two horizontal slotted patch with symmetrical chamfered at both corners, which are responsible for improving impedance bandwidth (IBW) and achieving wide axial ratio. The different cutting slots from the ground plane and vertical slot in MIMO antenna elements are responsible for enhancing isolation. The proposed antenna design covers −10 dB IBW ranging from 3.25 to 4.39 GHz and 6.74–8.41 GHz. This antenna radiates at 3.5 and 7.2 GHz with corresponding radiation efficiencies of 86.2 % and 92.32 %, isolation < −20.05 and < −29.71 dB, excellent peak gain 8.02 and 9.32 dB, while bandwidth of 1.14 GHz (29.84 %) and 1.67 GHz (22.05 %). Different diversity parameters for the proposed MIMO antenna have been obtained such as, envelope correlation coefficient < 0.0121 and < 0.0009, diversity gain nearly 9.87 and 9.99 dB, channel capacity loss < 0.0028 bits/s/Hz, and mean effective gain < −3 dB. The proposed work is printed on FR-4 epoxy substrate with overall electrical size of 0.29 λ0 × 0.61 λ0 × 0.018 λ0 at 3.5 GHz. Moreover, the suggested work also exhibits circular polarization ranging from 3.24–4.38, 5.27–7.2, 7.6–8.1 and 8.2–8.41 GHz. Finally, experimental analysis was done and the tested results exhibit good agreement with simulated results.
