Intermediate project deliverable This intermediate deliverable is part of phase 2 of the 23 Things Revisited: Field Guides to Research data Managementproject. In this phase, we adjust the original RDAs 23 Things: Libraries for Research Dataresource in the following way: 1. The original resource will be updated according to recent RDM developments, such as the FAIR principles, the GDPR, and Open Science in Europe 2. Links and references will be changed to reflect Dutch or European initiatives and resources. -> result: this intermediate project deliverable 3. Different (adjusted) versions of the 23 Things will be produced aimed at different target audiences (such as students, researchers, IT staff and data stewards) -> Final deliverable(s) phase 2: reviewed version(s) of the 23 Things (adapted to the Dutch / European situation and to different target audiences; number depends on the needs; in consultation with RDA/Working Group) About the project 23 Things Revisited: Field Guides to Research data Managementis a project funded by RDA Europe following its Adoption Open Call in 2019.Research support staff, such as data stewards, IT support staff, librarians or policy officers, often have different levels of understanding of Research Data Management (RDM). However, they need to collaborate closely to offer state-of-the-art support for researchers wishing to do responsible RDM. The23 Things: Libraries for Research Dataresource that has been developed by the RDA's Libraries for Research Data Interest Group can act as a shared reference tool that enhances mutual understanding and improves collaboration in the Netherlands. It can also be used for quick reference and as a guideline for training. We propose to update and adjust the23 Thingsto the above-mentioned audiences and stimulate nationwide adoption. Together with the workplanand Gantt chart, itdescribesthe goals,activities, stakeholders involved in the adoption,implementation and dissemination of the '23 things' in the Netherlands. English translation of positioning paper LCRDM Zenodo: https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.3266833 The Positioning Paper 2019 and beyond describes the scope of the LCRDM, based on a thematic classification and three broader (policy based) working areas. What LCRDM task groups are working on, are parts of a greater RDM puzzle that stem from every day practice in Dutch research institutions. At the same time, the cooperation within the LCRDM task groups places the work of research institutions within national parameters. This enhances verification, coherence and recognition. Since 2018, the LCRDM works with a pool of experts. The pool now has grown to more than 190 participants from 60 Dutch research institutes. Seven Task Groups are currently working on various aspects of RDM. And the first results are getting available (www.lcrdm.nl).

Goed onderzoek vereist goed datastewardship. Datastewardship staat voor het geheel van verschillende taken en verantwoordelijkheden dat betrekking heeft op de zorg voor data, gedurende de verschillende fases van de gehele research life cycle. Uitgangspunt hierbij is dat de onderzoeker zelf primair verantwoordelijk is voor alle data.2 Deze onderzoeker heeft daarbij echter wel behoefte aan professionele ondersteuning. Zodoende zijn de afgelopen jaren diverse ondersteunende datastewardshiprollen en -functies ontstaan. Vaak zijn deze historisch gegroeid. De invulling ervan hangt sterk af van de plek in de organisatie. Dat is niet verwonderlijk, aangezien het geheel van datastewardship bestaat uit vele facetten die traditioneel bij verschillende afdelingen zijn ondergebracht. Ook nemen onderzoekers vaak nog datastewardshiptaken op zich, niet alleen voor zichzelf maar ook voor een bredere onderzoeksgroep. Deze vorm van datastewardship is vaak onzichtbaar.

Good research requires good data stewardship. Data stewardship encompasses all the different tasks and responsibilities that relate to caring for data during the various phases of the whole research life cycle. The basic assumption is that the researcher himself/herself is primarily responsible for all data.2 However, the researcher does need professional support to achieve this. To that end, diverse supportive data stewardship roles and functions have evolved in recent years. Often they have developed over the course of time. Their functional implementation depends largely on their place in the organization. This comes as no surprise when one considers that data stewardship consists of many facets that are traditionally assigned to different departments. Researchers regularly take on data stewardship tasks as well, not only for themselves but also in a wider context for a research group. This data stewardship work often remains unnoticed.

About 5 years ago the first societal demands for Research Data Management (RDM) were heard. Since then, RDM has been a topic of growing interest for Universities and their Library & IT services. Motivations for RDM were, and still are: scientific integrity, improvement of the verification process, research continuity and financial/funding. In the Netherlands, most University Libraries played a major role in RDM awareness amongst researchers. Libraries developed a series of RDM services, and at the same time Libraries have built RDM capacity in their Library staff. At the same time, a national initiative to facilitate cooperation, knowledge sharing and enhancing the development of RDM-policy was launched in the Netherlands, in the form of the National Coordination Point Research Data Management (https://www.surf.nl/en/lcrdm). University libraries are the linking pins in the current working groups of the LCRDM, who work at a national level on topics such as legal aspects and ownership of RDM, financing of RDM, facilities and data infrastructure for RDM, research support and advise and awareness raising/engagement. However, despite the efforts and growing awareness, we still observe a relatively low adoption of RDM by the scientific community. Our presentation is twofold. After an introduction of the national initiative in the Netherlands and a comparison with the national initiatives in the UK and in Germany we want to dive deeper into the issue of how libraries can contribute to a better adoption of RDM by the research communities through improved RDM services, facilitating the findability (and re-use) of data, and communication. Libraries cannot work alone in achieving this. In our presentation we show that collaboration with IT, Legal Services and the Research Community is pre-requisite for a successful RDM adoption, both on a national level and within individual universities. In our presentation we will give some concrete working examples, based on experiences in Wageningen University, especially on how the Library at Wageningen University & Research facilitates the registration of research data, thus making the data findable and citable. RDM services cannot be developed by Libraries only. A close and trusted collaboration with IT services and Legal/policy services is required. RDM demands many types of expertise. We present how to create a collaborative Data Management Support Unit, in which all three services work together. With a single point of entry for the Researcher. Finally: an increased adoption of RDM can only be achieved when we communicate a lot. And not just within the Library community, but with our researchers! The main sender of the message is however, preferably not the Library or the IT services, but the research community spokes persons themselves. To obtain this, we work closely together with the Graduate Schools, who take the lead in the communication.

How do we deal with the explosion of data we are facing in education and research in the Netherlands? How can we store all this data so that it remains accessible for reuse, also in the long term? How do we safeguard scientific integrity? The National Coordination Point for Research Data Management facilitates a national strategy for research data management. In 2015 SURF (www.surf.nl), at request of the VSNU – the Association of Dutch Universities, set up this National Coordination Point for Research Data Management, to facilitate and enhance cooperation and knowledge sharing on all aspects of Research Data Management. The National Coordination Point is based at SURFsara (www.surfsara.nl), one of the working companies of SURF, and is embedded in the SURF Innovation Programme for Sustainable Data (2015-2018). The National Coordination Point supports the development and implementation of research data management policy for scientific research in the Netherlands and stimulates cooperation among the various stakeholders. Close cooperation with education and research institutions is crucial to this, allowing the Netherlands to efficiently and effectively develop and implement management policy for research data. How do we achieve this goal? By collecting and disseminating knowledge and information, bringing together the right people, facilitating existing initiatives, providing access to expertise and monitoring developments. The management of research data is multifaceted. Together with the institutions, we have identified five issues that the National Coordination Point will take up the coming three years: facilities and data infrastructure; legal aspects and ownership; financial aspects; awareness raising/engagement; and support of the researcher. For each of these issues a Working Group has been formed. The members of each Working Group represent the relevant stake holder groups in a specific area and the Working Groups over all have an broad national coverage. To get started, the Working Group members, together with the Working Group leaders, all formulated a detailed Working Agenda, to focus on short term, midterm and long term goals to be achieved in their specific area. To be able to support the researcher in good Research Data Management throughout the whole RDM Life Cycle, the Working Groups feel that close cooperation between experts in IT, Research Support and Policy (including legal and financial policy) is crusial. The Working Groups work on a tactical level, formulating policies, standards and guidelines, and will escalate the results of their efforts on a strategic level. Besides facilitating the aforementioned Working Groups, the National Coordination Point collects and disseminates knowledge, tools, standards and best practices on research data management via a website, a platform and an online news letter, to enhance dialogue and the exchange of knowledge and ideas.The website will be available in March 2016 under www.researchdatamanagement.nl The over all perspective of the National Coordination Point Research Data Management has been written down in a Roadmap, which is currently available through the SURF website: https://www.surf.nl/en/innovationprojects/sustainable-data/national-research-data-management-coordination-point.html (Dutch only for the time being – but will be translated at short notice).

A high proportion of senior library professionals will retire in the near future. In addition, due to better career possibilities outside libraries, it is getting harder to recruit young people. Consequently, it will become a great challenge to find active professionals and leaders to develop our profession, and to sustain the foundation for national and international organisations. This workshop aims to encourage LIS new professionals to take active part in the development of our profession. It will discuss professional development challenges faced by individuals in various countries as they enter the profession as well as suggestions how to rise to these challenges and to solve problems. At first, the workshop participants will be introduced to IFLA, its digital activities and current initiatives for and by new professionals such as the New Professionals Special Interest Group (NPSIG). Afterwards, the audience will split up in several working groups that will brainstorm on the following topics: Suppor t on a national level Are there groups for new professionals in your country? What does your national organisation(s) do to support new professionals (scholarships, discounts, awards, special conferences and so on) and are you satisfied with this support? How can this support be improved? Recrui tment on an international level How can new professionals become more motivated and involved in professional activities? What are the challenges for new information professionals and what can be done to meet them? What should be the main goals and activities of IFLA / NPSIG? Web-based component / digital platform What would new professionals like to do in the digital area of the international IFLA network? Which kind of web-based component would be useful to help new professionals getting more involved in the IFLA community? The final result will be a recommendation on how to have more students being active in the international library world. The results will be used as basis for re-defining the mission and objectives of the NPSIG. The outcomes will also help to improve the work of the NPSIG. Hopefully by suggesting new activities and by coming up with information about new professionals groups in various countries workshop findings can be published on the NPSIG’s website.

Deliverable: audience-specific versions of the 23 Things This is a deliverable of the RDA Europe23 Things Revisited: Field Guides to Research data Managementproject. Via joint sprint sessions, the original resource wasupdated and adapted todifferent audiences. In a first phase, we have updated the original RDA output23 Things: Libraries for Research Dataresource. 1. The original resource was updated according to recent RDM developments, such as the FAIR principles, the GDPR, and Open Science in Europe. 2. Links and references were changed to reflect Dutch or European initiatives and resources. This update isavailable viahttps://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.3465895, but is replaced by the versions of the second phase (this upload: https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.3773663), as these versions are more up-to-date. In this second phase, we have further updated the original RDA output, and adjusted it todifferent audiences, with help of the national and international communities (for this we gratefully thank and acknowledge all theauthors/contributors).
