We use a dynamical model of galactic fountain to study the neutral extraplanar gas (EPG) in the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 2403. We have modelled the EPG as a combination of material ejected from the disc by stellar feedback (i.e. galactic fountain) and gas accreting from the inner circumgalactic medium (CGM). This accretion is expected to occur because of cooling/condensation of the hot CGM (corona) triggered by the fountain. Our dynamical model reproduces the distribution and kinematics of the EPG H$\mathrm{\scriptsize{I}}$ emission in NGC 2403 remarkably well and suggests a total EPG mass of $4.7^{+1.2}_{-0.9}\times10^8\mathrm{M}_\odot$, with a typical scale height of around 1 kpc and a vertical gradient of the rotation velocity of $-10.0\pm2.7\,\mathrm{km\,s^{-1}\,kpc^{-1}}$. The best-fitting model requires a characteristic outflow velocity of $50\pm10\,\mathrm{km\,s^{-1}}$. The outflowing gas starts out mostly ionised and only becomes neutral later in the trajectory. The accretion rate from the condensation of the inner hot CGM inferred by the model is 0.8$\,\mathrm{M}_\odot\,\mathrm{yr}^{-1}$, approximately equal to the star formation rate in this galaxy (0.6$\,\mathrm{M}_\odot\,\mathrm{yr}^{-1}$). We show that the accretion profile, which peaks at a radius of about 4.5$\,$kpc, predicts a disc growth rate compatible with the observed value. Our results indicate that fountain-driven corona condensation is a likely mechanism to sustain star formation as well as the disc inside-out growth in local disc galaxies., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

WEAVE, the new wide-field, massively multiplexed spectroscopic survey facility for the William Herschel Telescope, will see first light in late 2022. WEAVE comprises a new 2-degree field-of-view prime-focus corrector system, a nearly 1000-multiplex fibre positioner, 20 individually deployable 'mini' integral field units (IFUs), and a single large IFU. These fibre systems feed a dual-beam spectrograph covering the wavelength range 366$-$959\,nm at $R\sim5000$, or two shorter ranges at $R\sim20\,000$. After summarising the design and implementation of WEAVE and its data systems, we present the organisation, science drivers and design of a five- to seven-year programme of eight individual surveys to: (i) study our Galaxy's origins by completing Gaia's phase-space information, providing metallicities to its limiting magnitude for $\sim$3 million stars and detailed abundances for $\sim1.5$ million brighter field and open-cluster stars; (ii) survey $\sim0.4$ million Galactic-plane OBA stars, young stellar objects and nearby gas to understand the evolution of young stars and their environments; (iii) perform an extensive spectral survey of white dwarfs; (iv) survey $\sim400$ neutral-hydrogen-selected galaxies with the IFUs; (v) study properties and kinematics of stellar populations and ionised gas in $z<0.5$ cluster galaxies; (vi) survey stellar populations and kinematics in $\sim25\,000$ field galaxies at $0.3\lesssim z \lesssim 0.7$; (vii) study the cosmic evolution of accretion and star formation using $>1$ million spectra of LOFAR-selected radio sources; (viii) trace structures using intergalactic/circumgalactic gas at $z>2$. We present MeerKAT HI observations of six jellyfish candidate galaxies (JFCGs) in the galaxy cluster, A2626. Two of the six galaxies JW100 and JW103, that were identified as JFCGs from B-band images, are confirmed as jellyfish galaxies (JFGs). Both of the JFGs have low HI content, reside in the cluster core, and move at very high velocities ($\sim$ 3$\sigma_{cl}$). The other JFCGs, identified as non-jellyfish galaxies, are HI rich, with HI morphologies revealing warps, asymmetries, and possible tidal interactions. Both the A2626 JFGs and three other confirmed JFGs from the GASP sample show that these galaxies are HI stripped but not yet quenched. We detect HI, Halpha, and CO tails of similar extent ($\sim$ 50 kpc) in JW100. Comparing the multi-phase velocity channels, we do not detect any HI or CO emission in the northern section of the tail where Halpha emission is present, possibly due to prolonged interaction between the stripped gas and the ICM. We also observe an anti-correlation between HI and CO, which hints at an efficient conversion of HI to H2 in the southern part of the tail. We find that both RPS and HI-to-H2 conversion are significant depletion channels for atomic gas. We study the relationship between the H{\sc i} specific angular momentum (j$_{\rm g}$) and the H{\sc i} mass (M$_{\rm g}$) for a sample of galaxies with well measured H{\sc i} rotation curves. We find that the relation is well described by an unbroken power law \jg $\propto$ \mg$^{\alpha}$ over the entire mass range (10$^{7}$-10$^{10.5}$ M$_{\odot}$), with $\alpha = 0.89 \pm 0.05$ (scatter 0.18 dex). This is in reasonable agreement with models which assume that evolutionary processes maintain H{\sc i} disks in a marginally stable state. The slope we observe is also significantly different from both the $j \propto M^{2/3}$ relation expected for dark matter haloes from tidal torquing models and the observed slope of the specific angular momentum-mass relation for the stellar component of disk galaxies. Our sample includes two H{\sc i}-bearing ultra diffuse galaxies, and we find that their angular momentum follows the same relation as other galaxies. The only discrepant galaxies in our sample are early-type galaxies with large rotating H{\sc i} disks which are found to have significantly higher angular momentum than expected from the power law relation. The H{\sc i} disks of all these early-type galaxies are misaligned or counter-rotating with respect to the stellar disks, consistent with the gas being recently accreted. We present a kinematic study of ionised extraplanar gas in two low-inclination late-type galaxies (NGC 3982 and NGC 4152) using integral field spectroscopy data from the DiskMass H$\alpha$ sample. We first isolate the extraplanar gas emission by masking the H$\alpha$ flux from the regularly rotating disc. The extraplanar gas emission is then modelled in the three-dimensional position-velocity domain using a parametric model described by three structural and four kinematic parameters. Best-fit values for the model are determined via a Bayesian MCMC approach. The reliability and accuracy of our modelling method are carefully determined via tests using mock data. We detect ionised extraplanar gas in both galaxies, with scale heights $0.83^{+0.27}_{-0.40}\,\mathrm{kpc}$ (NGC 3982) and $1.87^{+0.43}_{-0.56}\,\mathrm{kpc}$ (NGC 4152) and flux fraction between the extraplanar gas and the regularly rotating gas within the disc of 27% and 15% respectively, consistent with previous determinations in other systems. We find lagging rotation of the ionized extraplanar gas in both galaxies, with vertical rotational gradients $-22.24^{+6.60}_{-13.13} \,\mathrm{km\,s^{-1}\,kpc^{-1}}$ and $-11.18^{+3.49}_{-4.06}\,\mathrm{km\,s^{-1}\,kpc^{-1}}$, respectively, and weak evidence for vertical and radial inflow in both galaxies. The above results are similar to the kinematics of the neutral extraplanar gas found in several galaxies, though this is the first time that 3D kinematic modelling of ionised extraplanar gas has been carried out. Our results are broadly consistent with a galactic fountain origin combined with gas accretion. However, a dynamical model is required to better understand the formation of ionised extraplanar gas.

We combine orbital information from N-body simulations with an analytic model for star formation quenching and SDSS observations to infer the differential effect of the group/cluster environment on star formation in satellite galaxies. We also consider a model for gas stripping, using the same input supplemented with HI fluxes from the ALFALFA survey. The models are motivated by and tested on the Hydrangea cosmological hydrodynamical simulation suite. We recover the characteristic times when satellite galaxies are stripped and quenched. Stripping in massive ($M_\mathrm{ vir}\sim 10^{14.5}\,\mathrm{M}_\odot$) clusters typically occurs at or just before the first pericentric passage. Lower mass ($\sim10^{13.5}\,\mathrm{M}_\odot$) groups strip their satellites on a significantly longer (by $\sim3\,\mathrm{Gyr}$) timescale. Quenching occurs later: Balmer emission lines typically fade $\sim3.5\,\mathrm{Gyr}$ ($5.5\,\mathrm{Gyr}$) after first pericentre in clusters (groups), followed a few hundred $\mathrm{Myr}$ later by reddenning in $(g-r)$ colour. These `delay timescales' are remarkably constant across the entire satellite stellar mass range probed ($\sim10^{9.5}-10^{11}\,\mathrm{M}_\odot$), a feature closely tied to our treatment of `group pre-processing'. The lowest mass groups in our sample ($\sim10^{12.5}\,\mathrm{M}_\odot$) strip and quench their satellites extremely inefficiently: typical timescales may approach the age of the Universe. Our measurements are qualitatively consistent with the `delayed-then-rapid' quenching scenario advocated for by several other studies, but we find significantly longer delay times. We present JVLA-C observations of the HI gas in JO204, one of the most striking jellyfish galaxies from the GASP survey. JO204 is a massive galaxy in the low-mass cluster Abell 957 at z=0.04243. The HI map reveals an extended 90 kpc long ram-pressure stripped tail of neutral gas, stretching beyond the 30 kpc long ionized gas tail and pointing away from the cluster center. The HI mass seen in emission is (1.32 $ \pm 0.13) \times 10^{9} \rm M_{\odot}$, mostly located in the tail. The northern part of the galaxy disk has retained some HI gas, while the southern part has already been completely stripped and displaced into an extended unilateral tail. Comparing the distribution and kinematics of the neutral and ionized gas in the tail indicates a highly turbulent medium. Moreover, we observe associated HI absorption against the 11 mJy central radio continuum source with an estimated HI absorption column density of 3.2 $\times 10^{20}$ cm$^{-2}$. The absorption profile is significantly asymmetric with a wing towards higher velocities. We modelled the HI absorption by assuming that the HI and ionized gas disks have the same kinematics in front of the central continuum source, and deduced a wider absorption profile than observed. The observed asymmetric absorption profile can therefore be explained by a clumpy, rotating HI gas disk seen partially in front of the central continuum source, or by ram-pressure pushing the neutral gas towards the center of the continuum source, triggering the AGN activity., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The intergalactic medium (IGM) plays an important role in the formation and evolution of galaxies. Recent developments in upcoming radio telescopes are starting to open up the possibility of making a first direct detection of the 21 cm signal of neutral hydrogen (HI) from the warm gas of the IGM in large-scale filaments. The cosmological hydrodynamical EAGLE simulation is used to estimate the typical IGM filament signal. Assuming the same average signal for all filaments, a prediction is made for the detectability of such a signal with the upcoming mid-frequency array of the Square Kilometer Array (SKA1-mid) or the future upgrade to SKA2. The signal-to-noise (S/N) then only depends on the size and orientation of each filament. With filament spines inferred from existing galaxy surveys as a proxy for typical real filaments, we find hundreds of filaments in the region of the sky accessible to the SKA that can be detected. Once the various phases of the SKA telescope become operational, their own surveys will be able to find the galaxies required to infer the position of even more filaments within the survey area. We find that in 120 h, SKA1-mid/SKA2 will detect HI emission from the strongest filaments in the field with a S/N of the order of 10 to $\sim$150 for the most pessimistic model considered here. Some of the brighter filaments can be detected with an integration time of a few minutes with SKA1-mid and a few seconds with SKA2. We present a study of 16 HI-detected galaxies found in 178 hours of observations from Epoch 1 of the COSMOS HI Large Extragalactic Survey (CHILES). We focus on two redshift ranges between 0.108 <= z <= 0.127 and 0.162 <= z <= 0.183 which are among the worst affected by radio frequency interference (RFI). While this represents only 10% of the total frequency coverage and 18% of the total expected time on source compared to what will be the full CHILES survey, we demonstrate that our data reduction pipeline recovers high quality data even in regions severely impacted by RFI. We report on our in-depth testing of an automated spectral line source finder to produce HI total intensity maps which we present side-by-side with significance maps to evaluate the reliability of the morphology recovered by the source finder. We recommend that this become a common place manner of presenting data from upcoming HI surveys of resolved objects. We use the COSMOS 20k group catalogue, and we extract filamentary structure using the topological DisPerSE algorithm to evaluate the \hi\ morphology in the context of both local and large-scale environments and we discuss the shortcomings of both methods. Many of the detections show disturbed HI morphologies suggesting they have undergone a recent interaction which is not evident from deep optical imaging alone. Overall, the sample showcases the broad range of ways in which galaxies interact with their environment. In this paper we investigate the statistical properties of the Baryonic Tully-Fisher relation (BTFr) for a sample of 32 galaxies with accurate distances based on Cepheids and/or TRGB stars. We make use of homogeneously analysed photometry in 18 bands ranging from the FUV to 160 $\mu$m, allowing us to investigate the effect of the inferred stellar mass-to-light ratio $\Upsilon_{*}$ on the statistical properties of the BTFr. Stellar masses of our sample galaxies are derived with four different methods based on full SED-fitting, studies of stellar dynamics, near-infrared colours, and the assumption of the same $\Upsilon_{*}^{[3.6]}$ for all galaxies. In addition, we use high-quality, resolved HI kinematics to study the BTFr based on three kinematic measures: $W_{50}^{i}$ from the global HI profile, and $V_{max}$ and $V_{flat}$ from the rotation curve. We find the intrinsic perpendicular scatter, or tightness, of our BTFr to be $\sigma_{\perp} = 0.026 \pm 0.013$ dex, consistent with the intrinsic tightness of the 3.6 $\mu$m luminosity-based TFr. However, we find the slope of the BTFr to be $2.99 \pm 0.2$ instead of $3.7 \pm 0.1$ for the luminosity-based TFr at 3.6 $\mu$m. We use our BTFr to place important observational constraints on theoretical models of galaxy formation and evolution by making comparisons with theoretical predictions based on either the $\Lambda$CDM framework or modified Newtonian dynamics., Comment: 21 pages, MNRAS in press, minor changes after proof corrections

In this paper we investigate the statistical properties of the Tully-Fisher relation for a sample of 32 galaxies with measured distances from the Cepheid period-luminosity relation and/or TRGB stars. We take advantage of panchromatic photometry in 12 bands (from FUV to 4.5 $\mu$m) and of spatially resolved HI kinematics. We use these data together with three kinematic measures ($W^{i}_{50}$, $V_{max}$ and $V_{flat}$) extracted from the global HI profiles or HI rotation curves, so as to construct 36 correlations allowing us to select the one with the least scatter. We introduce a tightness parameter $\sigma_{\perp}$ of the TFr, in order to obtain a slope-independent measure of the goodness of fit. We present spatially-resolved HI kinematics of 32 spiral galaxies which have Cepheid or/and Tip of the Red Giant Branch distances, and define a calibrator sample for the Tully-Fisher relation. The interferometric HI data for this sample were collected from available archives and supplemented with new GMRT observations. This paper describes an uniform analysis of the HI kinematics of this inhomogeneous data set. Our main result is an atlas for our calibrator sample that presents global HI profiles, integrated HI column-density maps, HI surface density profiles and, most importantly, detailed kinematic information in the form of high-quality rotation curves derived from highly-resolved, two-dimensional velocity fields and position-velocity diagrams., Comment: 50 pages, 9 figures, 32 atlas figures

In a hierarchical Universe clusters grow via the accretion of galaxies from the field, groups and even other clusters. As this happens, galaxies can lose their gas reservoirs via different mechanisms, eventually quenching their star-formation. We explore the diverse environmental histories of galaxies through a multi-wavelength study of the combined effect of ram-pressure stripping and group "processing" in Abell 963, a massive growing cluster at $z=0.2$ from the Blind Ultra Deep HI Environmental Survey (BUDHIES). We incorporate hundreds of new optical redshifts (giving a total of 566 cluster members), as well as Subaru and XMM-Newton data from LoCuSS, to identify substructures and evaluate galaxy morphology, star-formation activity, and HI content (via HI deficiencies and stacking) out to $3\times R_{200}$. We find that Abell 963 is being fed by at least 7 groups, that contribute to the large number of passive galaxies outside the cluster core. More massive groups have a higher fraction of passive and HI-poor galaxies, while low-mass groups host younger (often interacting) galaxies. For cluster galaxies not associated with groups we corroborate our previous finding that HI gas (if any) is significantly stripped via ram-pressure during their first passage through the intra-cluster medium, and find mild evidence for a starburst associated with this event. In addition, we find an overabundance of morphologically peculiar and/or star-forming galaxies near the cluster core. We speculate that these arise as groups pass through the cluster (post-processing). An understanding of the mass build-up in galaxies over time necessitates tracing the evolution of cold gas (molecular and atomic) in galaxies. To that end, we have conducted a pilot study called CO Observations with the LMT of the Blind Ultra-Deep H I Environment Survey (COOL BUDHIES). We have observed 23 galaxies in and around the two clusters Abell 2192 (z = 0.188) and Abell 963 (z = 0.206), where 12 are cluster members and 11 are slightly in the foreground or background, using about 28 total hours on the Redshift Search Receiver (RSR) on the Large Millimeter Telescope (LMT) to measure the $^{12}$CO J = 1 --> 0 emission line and obtain molecular gas masses. These new observations provide a unique opportunity to probe both the molecular and atomic components of galaxies as a function of environment beyond the local Universe. For our sample of 23 galaxies, nine have reliable detections (S/N$\geq$3.6) of the $^{12}$CO line, and another six have marginal detections (2.0 < S/N < 3.6). For the remaining eight targets we can place upper limits on molecular gas masses roughly between $10^9$ and $10^{10} M_\odot$. Comparing our results to other studies of molecular gas, we find that our sample is significantly more abundant in molecular gas overall, when compared to the stellar and the atomic gas component, and our median molecular gas fraction lies about $1\sigma$ above the upper limits of proposed redshift evolution in earlier studies. We present results from 21 cm radio synthesis imaging of 28 spiral galaxies from the DiskMass Survey obtained with the VLA, WSRT, and GMRT facilities. We detail the observations and data reduction procedures and present a brief analysis of the radio data. We construct 21 cm continuum images, global HI emission-line profiles, column-density maps, velocity fields, and position-velocity diagrams. From these we determine star formation rates (SFRs), HI line widths, total HI masses, rotation curves, and azimuthally-averaged radial HI column-density profiles. All galaxies have an HI disk that extends beyond the readily observable stellar disk, with an average ratio and scatter of R_{HI}/R_{25}=1.35+/-0.22, and a majority of the galaxies appear to have a warped HI disk. A tight correlation exists between total HI mass and HI diameter, with the largest disks having a slightly lower average column density. Galaxies with relatively large HI disks tend to exhibit an enhanced stellar velocity dispersion at larger radii, suggesting the influence of the gas disk on the stellar dynamics in the outer regions of disk galaxies. We find a striking similarity among the radial HI surface density profiles, where the average, normalized radial profile of the late-type spirals is described surprisingly well with a Gaussian profile. These results can be used to estimate HI surface density profiles in galaxies that only have a total HI flux measurement. We compare our 21 cm radio continuum luminosities with 60 micron luminosities from IRAS observations for a subsample of 15 galaxies and find that these follow a tight radio-infrared relation, with a hint of a deviation from this relation at low luminosities. As part of the Bluedisk survey we analyse the radial gas-phase metallicity profiles of 50 late-type galaxies We compare the metallicity profiles of a sample of HI-rich galaxies against a control sample of HI-'normal' galaxies. We find the metallicity gradient of a galaxy to be strongly correlated with its HI mass fraction (M(HI) / Mstar). We note that some galaxies exhibit a steeper metallicity profile in the outer disc than in the inner disc. These galaxies are found in both the HI-rich and control samples. This contradicts a previous indication that these outer drops are exclusive to HI-rich galaxies. These effects are not driven by bars, although we do find some indication that barred galaxies have flatter metallicity profiles. By applying a simple analytical model we are able to account for the variety of metallicity profiles that the two samples present. The success of this model implies that the metallicity in these isolated galaxies may be in a local equilibrium, regulated by star formation. We investigate the effect of ram-pressure from the intracluster medium on the stripping of HI gas in galaxies in a massive, relaxed, X-ray bright, galaxy cluster at z=0.2 from the Blind Ultra Deep HI Environmental Survey (BUDHIES). We use cosmological simulations, and velocity vs. position phase-space diagrams to infer the orbital histories of the cluster galaxies. In particular, we embed a simple analytical description of ram-pressure stripping in the simulations to identify the regions in phase-space where galaxies are more likely to have been sufficiently stripped of their HI gas to fall below the detection limit of our survey. We find a striking agreement between the model predictions and the observed location of HI-detected and non-detected blue (late-type) galaxies in phase-space, strongly implying that ram-pressure plays a key role in the gas removal from galaxies, and that this can happen during their first infall into the cluster. However, we also find a significant number of gas-poor, red (early-type) galaxies in the infall region of the cluster that cannot easily be explained with our model of ram-pressure stripping alone. We discuss different possible additional mechanisms that could be at play, including the pre-processing of galaxies in their previous environment. Our results are strengthened by the distribution of galaxy colours (optical and UV) in phase-space, that suggests that after a (gas-rich) field galaxy falls into the cluster, it will lose its gas via ram-pressure stripping, and as it settles into the cluster, its star formation will decay until it is completely quenched. We present the correlation between the extrapolated central disk surface brightness (mu) and extrapolated central surface mass density (Sigma) for galaxies in the DiskMass sample. This mu-Sigma-relation has a small scatter of 30% at the high-surface-brightness (HSB) end. At the low surface brightness (LSB) end, galaxies fall above the mu-Sigma-relation, which we attribute to their higher dark matter content. After correcting for the dark matter, as well as for the contribution of gas and the effects of radial gradients in the disk, the LSB end falls back on the linear mu-Sigma-relation. The resulting scatter about the corrected mu-Sigma-relation is 25% at the HSB end, and about 50% at the LSB end. The intrinsic scatter in the mu-Sigma-relation is estimated to be 10% to 20%. Thus, if the surface brightness is known, the stellar surface mass density is known to within 10-20% (random error). Assuming disks have an exponential vertical distribution of mass, the average (M_L)_K is 0.24 Msun/Lsun, with an intrinsic scatter around the mean of at most 0.05 Msun/Lsun. This value for (M/L)_K is 20% smaller than we found in Martinsson et al., mainly due to the correction for dark matter applied here. This small scatter means that among the galaxies in our sample variations in scale height, vertical density profile shape, and/or the ratio of vertical over radial velocity dispersion must be small., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

We study the relationship between the stability level of late-type galaxy disks and their star-formation activity using integral-field gaseous and stellar kinematic data. Specifically, we compare the two-component (gas+stars) stability parameter from Romeo & Wiegert (Q_RW), incorporating stellar kinematic data for the first time, and the star-formation rate estimated from 21cm continuum emission. We determine the stability level of each disk probabilistically using a Bayesian analysis of our data and a simple dynamical model. Our method incorporates the shape of the stellar velocity ellipsoid (SVE) and yields robust SVE measurements for over 90% of our sample. Averaging over this subsample, we find a meridional shape of sigma_z/sigma_R = 0.51^{+0.36}_{-0.25} for the SVE and, at 1.5 disk scale lengths, a stability parameter of Q_RW = 2.0 +/- 0.9. We also find that the disk-averaged star-formation-rate surface density (Sigma-dot_e,*) is correlated with the disk-averaged gas and stellar mass surface densities (Sigma_e,g and Sigma_e,*) and anti-correlated with Q_RW. We show that an anti-correlation between Sigma-dot_e,* and Q_RW can be predicted using empirical scaling relations, such that this outcome is consistent with well-established statistical properties of star-forming galaxies. Interestingly, Sigma-dot_e,* is not correlated with the gas-only or star-only Toomre parameters, demonstrating the merit of calculating a multi-component stability parameter when comparing to star-formation activity. Finally, our results are consistent with the Ostriker et al. model of self-regulated star-formation, which predicts Sigma-dot_e,*/Sigma_e,g/sqrt(Sigma_e,*). We calculate the stellar surface mass density (Sigma_*) and two-component (gas+stars) disk stability (Q_RW) for 25 late-type galaxies from the DiskMass Survey. These calculations are based on fits of a dynamical model to our ionized-gas and stellar kinematic data performed using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo sampling of the Bayesian posterior. Marginalizing over all galaxies, we find a median value of Q_RW=2.0+/-0.9 at 1.5 scale lengths. We also find that Q_RW is anti-correlated with the star-formation rate surface density (Sigma_SFR), which can be predicted using a closed set of empirical scaling relations. Finally, we find that the star-formation efficiency (Sigma_SFR/Sigma_g) is correlated with Sigma_* and weakly anti-correlated with Q_RW. The former is consistent with an equilibrium prediction of Sigma_SFR/Sigma_g propto Sigma_*^{1/2}. We present dynamically-determined rotation-curve mass decompositions of 30 spiral galaxies, which were carried out to test the maximum-disk hypothesis and to quantify properties of their dark-matter (DM) halos. We used measured vertical velocity dispersions of the disk stars to calculate dynamical mass surface densities. Together with our atomic and molecular gas mass surface densities, we derived the stellar mass surface densities, and thus have absolute measurements of all dominant baryonic components. Using K-band surface brightness profiles, we calculated the K-band mass-to-light ratio of the stellar disks (M/L). Our result is consistent with all galaxies in the sample having equal M/L, with a sample average and scatter of =0.31+/-0.07. Rotation-curves of the baryonic components were calculated from their mass surface densities, and used with circular-speed measurements to derive the structural parameters of the DM halos, modeled as either a pseudo-isothermal sphere (pISO) or an NFW halo. All galaxies in our sample are submaximal, such that at 2.2 disk scale lengths (hR) the ratios between the baryonic and total rotation-curves (Fb^{2.2hR}) are less than 0.75. We find this ratio to be nearly constant between 1-6 hR within individual galaxies. We find a sample average and scatter of =0.57+/-0.07, with trends of larger Fb^{2.2hR} for more luminous and higher-surface-brightness galaxies. To enforce these being maximal, we need to scale M/L by a factor 3.6 on average. The DM rotation curves are marginally better fit by a pISO than by an NFW halo. For the nominal-M/L (submaximal) case, the derived NFW-halo parameters have values consistent with LCDM N-body simulations, suggesting that the baryonic matter has only had a minor effect on the DM distribution. We present ionized-gas (OIII) and stellar kinematics (velocities and velocity dispersions) for 30 nearly face-on spiral galaxies out to as much as three disk scale lengths (h_R). These data have been derived from PPak IFU spectroscopy (4980-5370A), observed at a mean resolution of R=7700 (sigma_inst=17km/s). These data are a fundamental product of our survey and will be used in companion papers to, e.g., derive the detailed (baryonic+dark) mass budget of each galaxy in our sample. Our presentation provides a comprehensive description of the observing strategy, data reduction, and analysis. Along with a clear presentation of the data, we demonstrate: (1) The OIII and stellar rotation curves exhibit a clear signature of asymmetric drift with a rotation difference that is 11% of the maximum rotation speed of the galaxy disk, comparable to measurements in the solar neighborhood in the Milky Way. (2) The e-folding length of the stellar velocity dispersion is two times h_R on average, as expected for a disk with a constant scale height and mass-to-light ratio, with a scatter that is notably smaller for massive, high-surface-brightness disks in the most luminous galaxies. (3) At radii larger than 1.5 h_R, the stellar velocity dispersion tends to decline slower than the best-fitting exponential function, which may be due to an increase in the disk mass-to-light ratio, disk flaring, or disk heating by the dark-matter halo. (4) A strong correlation exists between the central vertical stellar velocity dispersion of the disks and their circular rotational speed at 2.2 h_R, with a zero point indicating that galaxy disks are submaximal. We present the optical spectroscopy for the Blind Ultra Deep HI Environmental Survey (BUDHIES). With the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope, BUDHIES has detected HI in over 150 galaxies in and around two Abell clusters at z~0.2. With the aim of characterizing the environments of the HI-detected galaxies, we obtained multi-fiber spectroscopy with the William Herschel Telescope. In this paper, we describe the spectroscopic observations, report redshifts and EW[OII] measurements for ~600 galaxies, and perform an environmental analysis. In particular, we present cluster velocity dispersion measurements for 5 clusters and groups in the BUDHIES volume, as well as a detailed substructure analysis., Comment: v2: Typos and small corrections after proofs added. 14 pages (plus small appendix), 12 figures. We measure the contribution of galaxy disks to the overall gravitational potential of 30 nearly face-on intermediate-to-late-type spirals from the DiskMass Survey. The central vertical velocity dispersion of the disk stars, sigma(z,R=0), is related to the maximum rotation speed (Vmax) as sigma(z,R=0) ~ 0.26 Vmax, consistent with previous measurements for edge-on disk galaxies and a mean stellar velocity ellipsoid axial ratio sigma(z) / sigma(R) = 0.6. For reasonable values of disk oblateness, this relation implies these galaxy disks are submaximal. We find disks in our sample contribute only 15% to 30% of the dynamical mass within 2.2 disk scale-lengths (hR), with percentages increasing systematically with luminosity, rotation speed and redder color. These trends indicate the mass ratio of disk-to-total matter remains at or below 50% at 2.2 hR even for the most extreme, fast-rotating disks (Vmax > 300 km/s), of the reddest rest-frame, face-on color (B-K ~ 4 mag), and highest luminosity (M(K)<-26.5 mag). Therefore, spiral disks in general should be submaximal. Our results imply that the stellar mass-to-light ratio and hence the accounting of baryons in stars should be lowered by at least a factor of 3., Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures, to appear in ApJ Letters

We present a detailed and unique mass budget for the high-surface-brightness galaxy UGC 463, showing it is dominated by dark matter (DM) at radii beyond one scale length (h_R) and has a baryonic-to-DM mass ratio of approximately 1:3 within 4.2 h_R. Assuming a constant scale height (h_z, calculated via an empirical oblateness relation), we calculate dynamical disk mass surface densities from stellar kinematics, which provide vertical velocity dispersions after correcting for the shape of the stellar velocity ellipsoid (measured to have sigma_theta/sigma_R=1.04 +/- 0.22 and sigma_z/sigma_R=0.48 +/- 0.09). We isolate the stellar mass surface density by accounting for all gas mass components and find an average K-band mass-to-light ratio of 0.22 +/- 0.09 (ran) ^{+0.16}_{-0.15} (sys) M_{sun}/L_{sun}^{K}; Zibetti et al. and Bell et al. predict, respectively, 0.56 and 3.6 times our dynamical value based on stellar-population-synthesis modeling. The baryonic matter is submaximal by a factor of ~3 in mass and the baryonic-to-total circular-speed ratio is 0.61^{+0.07}_{-0.09} (ran) ^{+0.12}_{-0.18} (sys) at 2.2 h_R; however, the disk is globally stable with a multi-component stability that decreases asymptotically with radius to Q~2. We directly calculate the circular speed of the DM halo by subtracting the baryonic contribution to the total circular speed; the result is equally well described by either a Navarro-Frenk-White halo or a pseudo-isothermal sphere. The volume density is dominated by DM at heights of |z|>1.6 h_z for radii of R > h_R. As is shown in follow-up papers, UGC 463 is just one example among nearly all galaxies we have observed that contradict the hypothesis that high-surface-brightness spiral galaxies have maximal disks., Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ (36 pages, 20 figures, 9 tables)

Wide-field multi-object spectroscopy is a high priority for European astronomy over the next decade. Most 8-10m telescopes have a small field of view, making 4-m class telescopes a particularly attractive option for wide-field instruments. We present a science case and design drivers for a wide-field multi-object spectrograph (MOS) with integral field units for the 4.2-m William Herschel Telescope (WHT) on La Palma. The instrument intends to take advantage of a future prime-focus corrector and atmospheric-dispersion corrector that will deliver a field of view 2 deg in diameter, with good throughput from 370 to 1,000 nm. The science programs cluster into three groups needing three different resolving powers R: (1) high-precision radial-velocities for Gaia-related Milky Way dynamics, cosmological redshift surveys, and galaxy evolution studies (R = 5,000), (2) galaxy disk velocity dispersions (R = 10,000) and (3) high-precision stellar element abundances for Milky Way archaeology (R = 20,000). The multiplex requirements of the different science cases range from a few hundred to a few thousand, and a range of fibre-positioner technologies are considered. Several options for the spectrograph are discussed, building in part on published design studies for E-ELT spectrographs. We present a performance analysis of the DiskMass Survey. The survey uses collisionless tracers in the form of disk stars to measure the surface-density of spiral disks, to provide an absolute calibration of the stellar mass-to-light ratio, and to yield robust estimates of the dark-matter halo density profile in the inner regions of galaxies. We find a disk inclination range of 25-35 degrees is optimal for our measurements, consistent with our survey design to select nearly face-on galaxies. Uncertainties in disk scale-heights are significant, but can be estimated from radial scale-lengths to 25% now, and more precisely in the future. We detail the spectroscopic analysis used to derive line-of-sight velocity dispersions, precise at low surface-brightness, and accurate in the presence of composite stellar populations. Our methods take full advantage of large-grasp integral-field spectroscopy and an extensive library of observed stars. We show that the baryon-to-total mass fraction (F_b) is not a well-defined observational quantity because it is coupled to the halo mass model. This remains true even when the disk mass is known and spatially-extended rotation curves are available. In contrast, the fraction of the rotation speed supplied by the disk at 2.2 scale lengths (disk maximality) is a robust observational indicator of the baryonic disk contribution to the potential. We construct the error-budget for the key quantities: dynamical disk mass surface-density, disk stellar mass-to-light ratio, and disk maximality (V_disk / V_circular). Random and systematic errors in these quantities for individual galaxies will be ~25%, while survey precision for sample quartiles are reduced to 10%, largely devoid of systematic errors outside of distance uncertainties., Comment: To appear in ApJ; 88 pages, 4 tables, 18 figures. We present a survey of the mass surface-density of spiral disks, motivated by outstanding uncertainties in rotation-curve decompositions. Our method exploits integral-field spectroscopy to measure stellar and gas kinematics in nearly face-on galaxies sampled at 515, 660, and 860 nm, using the custom-built SparsePak and PPak instruments. A two-tiered sample, selected from the UGC, includes 146 nearly face-on galaxies, with B<14.7 and disk scale-lengths between 10 and 20 arcsec, for which we have obtained H-alpha velocity-fields; and a representative 46-galaxy subset for which we have obtained stellar velocities and velocity dispersions. Based on re-calibration of extant photometric and spectroscopic data, we show these galaxies span factors of 100 in L(K) (0.03 < L/L(K)* < 3), 8 in L(B)/L(K), 10 in R-band disk central surface-brightness, with distances between 15 and 200 Mpc. The survey is augmented by 4-70 micron Spitzer IRAC and MIPS photometry, ground-based UBVRIJHK photometry, and HI aperture-synthesis imaging. We outline the spectroscopic analysis protocol for deriving precise and accurate line-of-sight stellar velocity dispersions. Our key measurement is the dynamical disk-mass surface-density. Star-formation rates and kinematic and photometric regularity of galaxy disks are also central products of the study. We analyze integral-field ionized gas and stellar line-of-sight kinematics in the context of determining the stellar velocity ellipsoid for spiral galaxies observed by the Disk-Mass Survey. Our new methodology enables us to measure, for the first time, a radial gradient in the ellipsoid ratio sigma_z / sigma_R. A pilot study with the powerful new backend of the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT) of two galaxy clusters at z=0.2 has revealed neutral hydrogen emission from 42 galaxies. The WSRT probes a total combined volume of 3.4x10^4 Mpc^3 at resolutions of 54x86 kpc^2 and 19.7 km/s, surveying both clusters and the large scale structure in which they are embedded. In Abell 963, a dynamically relaxed, lensing Butcher-Oemler cluster with a high blue fraction, most of the gas-rich galaxies are located between 1 and 3 Mpc in projection, northeast from the cluster core. Their velocities are slightly redshifted with respect to the cluster, and this is likely a background group. None of the blue galaxies in the core of Abell 963 are detected in HI, although they have similar colors and luminosities as the HI detected galaxies in the cluster outskirts and field. Abell 2192 is less massive and more diffuse. Here, the gas-rich galaxies are more uniformly distributed. The detected HI masses range from 5x10^9 to 4x10^10 Msun. Some galaxies are spatially resolved, providing rudimentary rotation curves useful for detailed kinematic studies of galaxies in various environments. PPak is a new fiber-based Integral Field Unit (IFU), developed at the Astrophysical Institute Potsdam, implemented as a module into the existing PMAS spectrograph. The purpose of PPak is to provide both an extended field-of-view with a large light collecting power for each spatial element, as well as an adequate spectral resolution. The PPak system consists of a fiber bundle with 331 object, 36 sky and 15 calibration fibers. The object and sky fibers collect the light from the focal plane behind a focal reducer lens. The object fibers of PPak, each 2.7 arcseconds in diameter, provide a contiguous hexagonal field-of-view of 74 times 64 arcseconds on the sky, with a filling factor of 60%. The operational wavelength range is from 400 to 900nm. The PPak-IFU, together with the PMAS spectrograph, are intended for the study of extended, low surface brightness objects, offering an optimization of total light-collecting power and spectral resolution. Little is known about the content and distribution of dark matter in spiral galaxies. To break the degeneracy in galaxy rotation curve decompositions, which allows a wide range of dark matter halo density profiles, an independent measure of the mass surface density of stellar disks is needed. Here, we present our ongoing Disk Mass project, using two custom-built Integral Field Units, to measure the vertical velocity dispersion of stars in ~40 spiral galaxies. This will provide a kinematic measurement of the stellar disk mass required to break the degeneracy, enabling us to determine the dark matter properties in spiral galaxies with unprecedented accuracy. We present the decomposition of the stellar velocity ellipsoid using stellar velocity dispersions within a 40 deg wedge about the major-axis (sigma_maj), the epicycle approximation, and the asymmetric drift equation. Thus, we employ no fitted forms for sigma_maj and escape interpolation errors resulting from comparisons of the major and minor axes. We apply the theoretical construction of the method to integral field data taken for NGC 3949 and NGC 3982. We derive the vertical-to-radial velocity dispersion ratio (sigma_z / sigma_R) and find (1) our decomposition method is accurate and reasonable, (2) NGC 3982 appears to be rather typical of an Sb type galaxy with sigma_z / sigma_R = 0.73 (+0.13/-0.11) despite its high surface brightness and small size, and (3) NGC 3949 has a hot disk with sigma_z / sigma_R = 1.18 (+0.36/-0.28)., Comment: 4 pages including 3 figures, to appear in "Island Universes: Structure and Evolution of Disk Galaxies", Terschelling, Netherlands, July 3-8, 2005

We present a performance analysis of SparsePak and the WIYN Bench Spectrograph for precision studies of stellar and ionized gas kinematics of external galaxies. We focus on spectrograph configurations with echelle and low-order gratings yielding spectral resolutions of ~10000 between 500-900nm. These configurations are of general relevance to the spectrograph performance. Benchmarks include spectral resolution, sampling, vignetting, scattered light, and an estimate of the system absolute throughput. Comparisons are made to other, existing, fiber feeds on the WIYN Bench Spectrograph. Vignetting and relative throughput are found to agree with a geometric model of the optical system. An aperture-correction protocol for spectrophotometric standard-star calibrations has been established using independent WIYN imaging data and the unique capabilities of the SparsePak fiber array. The WIYN point-spread-function is well-fit by a Moffat profile with a constant power-law outer slope of index -4.4. We use SparsePak commissioning data to debunk a long-standing myth concerning sky-subtraction with fibers: By properly treating the multi-fiber data as a ``long-slit'' it is possible to achieve precision sky subtraction with a signal-to-noise performance as good or better than conventional long-slit spectroscopy. No beam-switching is required, and hence the method is efficient. Finally, we give several examples of science measurements which SparsePak now makes routine. Observing the neutral Hydrogen in galaxy clusters provides crucial insights in the physical processes that influence the evolution of gas-rich galaxies as they migrate from the lower-density filaments through the cluster outskirts into to the higher-density central regions. The morphology-density relation, the Buther-Oemler effect, and the observed HI deficiencies in the central regions of galaxy clusters suggest that infalling galaxies experience a strong transformation of their morphologies, star formation rates, and gas content. The physical mechanisms that trigger and govern these transformations may depend strongly on environment. The combination of dynamical and photometric properties of galaxies offers a largely un-tapped source of information on how galaxies assembled and where stars formed. Bi-dimensional kinematic measurements have been the stumbling block. The light-gathering power of SALT coupled with the high-throughput performance of the Prime Focus Imaging Spectrograph (PFIS) yield a superb facility for measuring velocity-ellipsoids of stars and gas in galaxies out to gigaparsec distances. From these data dynamical asymmetries arising from lopsided or elliptical halos may be probed; disk-mass and mass-decompositions may be uniquely determined; mechanisms for disk heating constrained; and a zeropoint for the mass-to-light ratios of stellar populations set. A number of groups within the SALT consortium are interested in making these measurements using a variety of different, but complementary approaches. The scientific potential from their synthesis is very promising. We describe the design and construction of a formatted fiber field-unit, SparsePak, and characterize its optical and astrometric performance. This array is optimized for spectroscopy of low-surface brightness, extended sources in the visible and near-infrared. SparsePak contains 82, 4.7" fibers subtending an area of 72"x71" in the telescope focal plane, and feeds the WIYN Bench spectrograph. Together, these instruments are capable of achieving spectral resolutions of lambda/dlambda ~ 20000 and an area--solid-angle product of ~140 arcsec^2 m^2 per fiber. Laboratory measurements of SparsePak lead to several important conclusions on the design of fiber termination and cable curvature to minimize focal ratio degradation. SparsePak itself has throughput >80% redwards of 5200 A, and 90-92% in the red. Fed at f/6.3, the cable delivers an output 90% encircled energy at nearly f/5.2. This has implications for performance gains if the WIYN Bench Spectrograph had a faster collimator. Our approach to integral-field spectroscopy yields an instrument which is simple and inexpensive to build, yet yields the highest area--solid-angle product per spectrum of any system in existence. Detailed neutral hydrogen observations have been obtained of the large barred spiral galaxy NGC 3992 and its three small companion galaxies, UGC 6923, UGC 6940, and UGC 6969. For the main galaxy, the HI distribution is regular with a low level radial extension outside the stellar disc. However, at exactly the region of the bar, there is a pronounced central HI hole in the gas distribution. Likely gas has been transported inwards by the bar and because of the emptyness of the hole no large accretion events can have happened in recent galactic times. The gas kinematics is very regular and it is demonstrated that the influence of the bar potential on the velocity field is negligible. A precise and extended rotation curve has been derived showing some distinct features which can be explained by the non-exponential radial light distribution of NGC 3992. The decomposition of the rotation curve gives a slight preference for a sub maximal disc, though a range of disc contributions, up to a maximum disc situation fits nearly equally well. For such a maximum disc contribution, which might be expected in order to generate and maintain the bar, the required mass-to-light ratio is large but not exceptional., Comment: accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics. There is accumulating evidence that the faint end of the galaxy luminosity function might be very different in different locations. The luminosity function might be rising in rich clusters and flat or declining in regions of low density. If galaxies form according to the model of hierarchical clustering then there should be many small halos compared to the number of big halos. If this theory is valid then there must be a mechanism that eliminates at least the visible component of galaxies in low density regions. A plausible mechanism is photoionization of the intergalactic medium at a time before the epoch that most dwarf galaxies form in low density regions but after the epoch of formation for similar systems that ultimately end up in rich clusters. The dynamical timescales are found to accommodate this hypothesis in a flat universe with Omega_m < 0.4. If small halos exist but simply cannot be located because they have never become the sites of significant star formation, they still might have dynamical manifestations. These manifestations are hard to identify in normal groups of galaxies because small halos do not make a significant contribution to the global mass budget. However, it could be entertained that there are clusters of halos where there are only small systems, clusters that are at the low mass end of the hierarchical tree. There may be places where only a few small galaxies managed to form, enough for us to identify and use as test probes of the potential. It turns out that such environments might be common. Four probable groups of dwarfs are identified within 5 Mpc and the assumption they are gravitationally bound suggests M/L_B ~ 300 - 1200 M_sun/L_sun, 6 +/- factor 2 times higher than typical values for groups with luminous galaxies., Comment: Accepted ApJ 569, (April 20), 2002, 12 pages, 6 figures, 1 table

We present and discuss optical, near-infrared and HI measurements of the galaxy Markarian 1460 at a distance of 19 Mpc in the Ursa Major Cluster. This low-luminosity (M_B = -14) galaxy is unusual because (i) it is blue (B-R=0.8) and has the spectrum of an HII galaxy, (ii) it has a light profile that is smooth and well fit by an r^{1/4} and not an exponential function at all radii larger than the seeing, and (iii) it has an observed central brightness of about mu_B = 20 mag arcsec^{-2}, intermediate between those of elliptical galaxies (on the bright mu_B side) and normal low-luminosity dwarf irregular (on the low mu_B side) galaxies. No other known galaxy exhibits all these properties in conjunction. On morphological grounds this galaxy looks like a normal distant luminous elliptical galaxy, since the fundamental plane tells us that higher luminosity normal elliptical galaxies tend to have lower surface-brightnesses. Markarian 1460 has 2 X 10^7 M_sun of HI and a ratio M(HI)/L_B of 0.2, which is low compared to typical values for star-forming dwarf galaxies. From the high surface brightness and r^{1/4} profile, we infer that the baryonic component of Markarian 1460 has become self-gravitating through dissipative processes. From the colours, radio continuum, HI and optical emission line properties, yet smooth texture, we infer that Markarian 1460 has had significant star formation as recently as about 1 Gyr ago but not today., Comment: MNRAS in press

Results are presented of a deep optical survey of the Ursa Major Cluster, a spiral-rich cluster of galaxies at a distance of 18.6 Mpc which contains about 30% of the light but only 5% of the mass of the nearby Virgo Cluster. Fields around known cluster members and a pattern of blind fields along the major and minor axes of the cluster were studied with mosaic CCD cameras on the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. The dynamical crossing time for the Ursa Major Cluster is only slightly less than a Hubble time. Most galaxies in the local Universe exist in similar moderate density environments. The Ursa Major Cluster is therefore a good place to study the statistical properties of dwarf galaxies since this structure is at an evolutionary stage representative of typical environments yet has enough galaxies that reasonable counting statistics can be accumulated. The main observational results of our survey are: (i) The galaxy luminosity function is flat, with a logarithmic slope alpha = -1.1 for -17 < M_R < -11, from a power-law fit. The error in alpha is likely to be less than 0.2 and is dominated by systematic errors, primarily associatedd with uncertainties in assigning membership to specific galaxies. This faint end slope is quite different to what was seen in the Virgo Cluster where alpha=-2.26. (ii) Dwarf galaxies are as frequently found to be blue dwarf irregulars as red dwarf spheroidals in the blind cluster fields. The density of red dwarfs is significantly higher in the fields around luminous members than in the blind fields. The most important result is the failure to detect many dwarfs. If the steep luminosity function claimed for the Virgo Cluster were valid for Ursa Major then in our blind fields we should have found about 1000 galaxies with -17 < M_R <-11 where we have found two dozen., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figs, TeX, MNRAS in press, Fig 3 at higher resolution available from the authors

In this data paper we present the results of an extensive 21cm-line synthesis imaging survey of 43 spiral galaxies in the nearby Ursa Major cluster using the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope. Detailed kinematic information in the form of position-velocity diagrams and rotation curves is presented in an atlas together with HI channel maps, 21cm continuum maps, global HI profiles, radial HI surface density profiles, integrated HI column density maps, and HI velocity fields. The relation between the corrected global HI linewidth and the rotational velocities Vmax and Vflat as derived from the rotation curves is investigated. Inclination angles obtained from the optical axis ratios are compared to those derived from the inclined HI disks and the HI velocity fields. The galaxies were not selected on the basis of their HI content but solely on the basis of their cluster membership and inclination which should be suitable for a kinematic analysis. The observed galaxies provide a well-defined, volume limited and equidistant sample, useful to investigate in detail the statistical properties of the Tully-Fisher relation and the dark matter halos around them., Comment: 32 pages, including 2 sample pages of HI atlas. The Ursa Major Cluster appears to be unevolved and made up of HI-rich spiral galaxies. B,R,I,K' photometry has been obtained for 79 galaxies, including 62 in a complete sample with M(B)<-16.5 mag. The K' information is particularly important for the present discussion because it is not seriously affected by obscuration. There is reasonably convincing evidence that the distribution of exponential disk central surface brightnesses is bimodal. Disks avoid the domain between the high and low surface brightness zones. The few intermediate surface brightness examples in the sample all have significant nearby neighbors. The high surface brightness (HSB) galaxies exhibit a range -21

A cluster sample of 62 galaxies complete to M(B)=-16.5 mag has been observed at B,R,I,K' bands with imaging detectors. The distribution of exponential disk central surface brightnesses is found to be bimodal. The bimodality is particularly significant at K' because obscuration is not a problem and because the high surface brightness galaxies are redder than the low surface brightness galaxies so the bifurcation is greater. The bimodality signal is especially clear when galaxies with close companions are excluded from consideration. High and low surface brightness pairs with essentially identical luminosities and maximum rotation characteristics are compared. It is suggested that the high surface brightness galaxies have self-gravitating disks while the low surface brightness galaxies are halo dominated at all radii. Evidently the intermediate surface brightness regime is unstable. If a disk has sufficiently low angular momentum and it shrinks enough that the disk potential begins to dominate the halo potential locally, then the disk must secularly evolve to the high surface brightness state characterized by a flat rotation curve., Comment: Contribution to ESO Workshop 18-20 November, 1996. The Ursa Major Cluster has received remarkably little attention, although it is as near as the Virgo Cluster and contains a comparable number of HI-rich galaxies. In this paper, criteria for group membership are discussed and data are presented for 79 galaxies identified with the group. Of these, all 79 have been imaged at B,R,I bands with CCDs, 70 have been imaged at K' with a HgCdTe array detector, and 70 have been detected in the HI 21cm line. A complete sample of 62 galaxies brighter than M(B)=-16.5 is identified. Images and gradients in surface brightness and color are presented at a common linear scale. As has been seen previously, the galaxies with the reddest global colors are reddest at the centers and get bluer at large radii. However, curiously, among the galaxies with the bluest global colors there are systems with very blue cores that get redder at large radii., Comment: A LATEX file without figures.
