During 3 years we studied a population of multimammate rats, Mastomys natalensis (Smith 1834), in Morogoro, Tanzania. Data were collected in both removal and capture-recapture schemes. We present evidence that patterns of growth and reproduction were related to onset and abundance of rains. This partially explains differences in densities. Additionally, we investigated available literature data and related them with climatological data. A scenario is presented which enables us to predict how densities of multimammate rats may evolve in the following year and whether there will be a risk of outbreaks. The use and implications of this scenario in planning control actions are discussed.

Isoenzymes -- Research ,Plankton research -- Research ,Gastropoda -- Research ,Biological sciences - Abstract
Random amplified polymorphic DNA analysis, or RAPD, of the population genetic structure of planktonic-developing periwinkle showed significant similarity between frequency and heterozygosity levels. The high congruence between RAPD and allozyme data suggest varied shell morphs and geographically separated populations share a common gene pool.

Research shows that the Macaronesian intertidal periwinkle Littorina striata with nodulose shells occur in greater quantities than those with smooth shells within a crater in the Azores. The smooth-shelled variety is mainly found at the crater perimeter. Evidence indicates that the smooth shell's aperture height gives it strength to resist wave exposure.

- Abstract

- Abstract
Background: Femoral neck fractures are associated with high rates of revision surgery after management with internal fixation. Using data from the Fixation using Alternative Implants for the Treatment of Hip fractures (FAITH) trial evaluating methods of internal fixation in patients with femoral neck fractures, we investigated associations between baseline and surgical factors and the need for revision surgery to promote healing, relieve pain, treat infection or improve function over 24 months postsurgery. Additionally, we investigated factors associated with (1) hardware removal and (2) implant exchange from cancellous screws (CS) or sliding hip screw (SHS) to total hip arthroplasty, hemiarthroplasty, or another internal fixation device. Methods: We identified 15 potential factors a priori that may be associated with revision surgery, 7 with hardware removal, and 14 with implant exchange. We used multivariable Cox proportional hazards analyses in our investigation. Results: Factors associated with increased risk of revision surgery included: female sex, [hazard ratio (HR) 1.79, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.25-2.50; P = 0.001], higher body mass index (for

- Abstract
Background Reoperation rates are high after surgery for hip fractures. We investigated the effect of a sliding hip screw versus cancellous screws on the risk of reoperation and other key outcomes. Methods For this international, multicentre, allocation concealed randomised controlled trial, we enrolled patients aged 50 years or older with a low-energy hip fracture requiring fracture fixation from 81 clinical centres in eight countries. Patients were assigned by minimisation with a centralised computer system to receive a single large-diameter screw with a side-plate (sliding hip screw) or the present standard of care, multiple small-diameter cancellous screws. Surgeons and patients were not blinded but the data analyst, while doing the analyses, remained blinded to treatment groups. The primary outcome was hip reoperation within 24 months after initial surgery to promote fracture healing, relieve pain, treat infection, or improve function. Analyses followed the intention-to-treat principle. This study was registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, number NCT00761813. Findings Between Marc

- Abstract
Botulinum toxin (BoNT) injections in the dystonic muscles is the preferred treatment for Cervical Dystonia (CD), but the proper identification of the dystonic muscles remains a challenge. Previous studies showed decreased 8–14 Hz autospectral power in the electromyography (EMG) of splenius muscles in CD patients. Cumulative distribution functions (CDF’s) of dystonic muscles showed increased CDF10 values, representing increased autospectral powers between 3 and 10 Hz, relative to power between 3 and 32 Hz. In this study, we evaluated both methods and investigated the effects of botulinum toxin. Intramuscular EMG recordings were obtained from the splenius, semispinalis, and sternocleidomastoid muscles during standardized isometric tasks in 4 BoNT-naïve CD patients, 12 BoNT-treated patients, and 8 healthy controls. BoNT-treated patients were measured 4–7 weeks after their last BoNT injections and again after 11–15 weeks. We found significantly decreased 8–14 Hz autospectral power in splenius muscles, but not in the semispinalis and sternocleidomastoid muscles of CD patients when compared to healthy controls. CDF10 analysis was superior in demonstrating subtle autospectral changes, and showed increased CDF10 values in all studied muscles of CD patients. These results did not change significantly after BoNT injections. Further studies are needed to investigate the origin of these autospectral changes in dystonia patients, and to assess their potential in muscle selection for BoNT treatment, Biomechatronics & Human-Machine Control, Intelligent Vehicles

Objective: The aim of the study is to test whether the PowerGlove (PG), an instrumented glove which consists of inertial (accelerometers and gyroscopes) and magnetic sensors, is a valid and reliable instrument to measure different degrees of hand motor impairments in patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD). Background: Assessment of hand movements is an important part of the motor function section of the Unified PD Rating Scale (UPDRS). Unfortunately, the assessment often varies per physician and is highly dependent on experience. This subjective nature sometimes makes it hard to interpret the UPDRS correctly. Recently, the University of Twente developed the PG which enables accurate and ambulant measurement of hand and finger movements (Fig. 1A)[1]. Application of the PG during the clinical scoring will enable more accurate observation of hand function and quantification of the PD motor symptoms. Methods: We plan to include 35 PD patients. We will assess the hand movements of the patients in medication on/off state with the PG during 7 UPDRS items, i.e. tremor at rest, action and postural tremor, finger tapping, rapid opening/closing of the hand, pro/supination of the hand, and wrist rigidity. Sensor units of the PG are attached to the dorsal side of the left hand and on the finger segments of the thumb, index and middle finger. One additional PG sensor is attached to the forearm to measure the wrist angle. A force sensor is used to measure the force which is applied to passively flex the wrist of the patient. Prior to measurement, an anatomical calibration procedure is performed to determine the sensor-to-segment coordinate systems. Results: Visual inspection of preliminary results showed there were notable differences in the recorded data within a patient in medication on/off state. Conclusions: The results indicate that the PG enables to quantitatively detect differences in the clinical state of the patient. In the next phase of this study, parameters need to be found which describe the performance of UPDRS tasks and include these in the group analyses of the 35 PD patients.

An adductor longus muscle rupture is a rare injury. This case report describes a 32-year-old patient with an adductor longus rupture. The trauma mechanism was a hyperabduction movement during a soccer game. Nonoperative treatment was initiated. After a follow-up of 4 years, the patient was without pain but a small swelling was still visible. This report describes the anatomy, pathophysiology, and evidence-based treatment of adductor longus rupture.

Research has been conducted on Azorian land snail Leptaxis azorica. The authors have investigated this snail via the use of morphometric and electrophoretic analysis, and they suggest that genetic distances indicate the presence of distinct lineages, and that these distances are compatible with the colonization proceeding from the eastern islands to the west.

The [C.sub.3]-[C.sub.4] hypothesis states that plants possessing the [C.sub.4] photosynthetic pathway are a poorer food resource for herbivores than those possessing the [C.sub.3] pathway, and that this difference is reflected in a tendency for herbivores to avoid feeding on [C.sub.4] species. We tested this hypothesis by studying host preference of two oligophagous grass miners, Chromatomyia milii and C. nigra (Diptera: Agromyzidae). Multiple-choice experiments between four [C.sub.3] and four [C.sub.4] grasses, two-choice experiments between combinations of [C.sub.3] and [C.sub.4] grasses, and no-choice experiments demonstrated a clear feeding and oviposition preference for [C.sub.3] grasses by both miners. Feeding and oviposition were very rare to absent on all [C.sub.4] grasses. Nutritional-quality analyses showed that water, protein, amino acid, and lignin content did not differ between [C.sub.3] and [C.sub.4] grasses; only the soluble carbohydrate content proved to be significantly lower in [C.sub.4] grasses. We postulated and tested a new explanation for [C.sub.4] avoidance, the 'physical-constraint hypothesis,' which states that physical constraints imposed by a smaller interveinal distance in [C.sub.4] grasses may cause [C.sub.4] avoidance. Interveinal distances of [C.sub.4] grasses were significantly smaller than those of [C.sub.3] grasses, and their ranges did not overlap. Several observations strongly suggested that interveinal distance influences feeding and oviposition patterns. Firstly, the ovipositor and eggs of both miners were too wide to fit between two adjacent veins of [C.sub.4] grasses. Secondly, feeding punctures initiated on [C.sub.4] grasses were smaller than on [C.sub.3] grasses, and feeding-puncture size was correlated with interveinal distance. Regression analysis showed that feeding and oviposition preference were positively related to interveinal distance but not to carbohydrate content. We conclude that our observations are consistent with the physical-constraint hypothesis rather than the nutritional-quality hypothesis. The hand is important in many daily life activities. During aging, quality of fine motor control of hand and fingers is decreasing. Also motor symptoms of the hand are important to define for instance the neurological state of a Parkinson’s disease patient. Although objective and reliable measurement of hand and finger dynamics is of interest, current measurement systems are limited. This paper describes the application of the PowerGlove, a new measurement system based on miniature inertial and magnetic sensors, to study the finger interdependency in healthy elderly and objectively quantify hand motor symptoms in Parkinson’s disease. Results of pilot experiments in young healthy subjects are shown to evaluate the feasibility of the applications.

Hand motor control is quite complex and measurement of hand kinematics is therefore of high interest in many fields. A new measurement system based on miniature inertial and magnetic sensors, the PowerGlove, has been developed. In the near future, the PowerGlove will be applied to study finger interdependency in healthy elderly and to objectively quantify hand motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease. To validate and test the feasibility of the PowerGlove for future application Validation experiments with an optoelectronic marker system and pilot experiments in young healthy subjects were performed, specifically focused on measurement of metacarpophalangeal joint flexion/extension (MCP), proximal interphalangeal joint flexion (PIP) and finger tapping. Mean root mean square (RMS) difference between the optoelectronic marker system and the PowerGlove was less than 5 degrees. The results from the pilot experiments showed the feasibility of the PowerGlove to quantify each finger and joint movement in different movement tasks that are of interest for application in aged subjects and Parkinson disease patients.

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the Subthalamic Nucleus (STN) is widely used in advanced stages of Parkinson's disease(PD) and has proven to be an effective treatment of the various motor symptoms. The therapy involves implanting a lead consisting of multiple electrodes in the STN through which continues high frequency electric pulses are delivered. The clinical outcome highly depends on the location of the electrodes within the STN. However, despite careful planning

Biology - Abstract
Removal of topsoil on former agricultural fields resulted in a rapid reduction in soil fertility. Insight into the general principles determining invertebrate faunal community assemblage after removal of topsoil was studied by correlating assemblage of the carabid community ten years after topsoil removal, to traits related to abiotic preferences, dispersal ability and the relative abundance of species. Special emphasis is put on the animal species characteristic of low production communities (target species). Results showed that newly exposed sites were rapidly colonized by Carabidae. Both abiotic preference and dispersal ability to some extent influenced community assemblage. Over time the importance of abiotic conditions on community assemblage increased, whilst dispersal restrictions seemed to decrease. During the first ten years chance factors appeared to be of major importance on community assemblage. Isolated restoration sites were almost exclusively colonised by flying species. Restoration of the characteristic invertebrate carabid fauna of low production communities thus requires the presence of source populations in the immediate surroundings. It is concluded that restoration of low production communities on former agricultural land is an effective conservation method for carabid beetles, particularly for endangered, non-flying, large species.
