En la presente tesis doctoral se aborda el estudio de las comunidades de peces presentes en las zonas someras litorales del Mar Menor. La comunidad objeto de estudio estuvo conformada principalmente por individuos en estado de postlarva e individuos juveniles, junto con los adultos de especies de talla pequeña.Los objetivos planteados fueron:A) Caracterización específica de la ictiofauna.B) Análisis de la biología poblacional y relaciones con el hábitat de especies de peces bentónicos.C) Análisis de las relaciones entre los tipos de hábitats litorales y la comunidad de peces.Los resultados obtenidos ponen de manifiesto la elevada importancia de las zonas someras litorales de la laguna como hábitats esenciales para la multitud de especies ícticas, tanto aquellas que poseen interés pesquero comercial (familias Atherinidae, Mugilidae y Sparidae) como aquellas que presentan interés conservacionista (familias Cyprinodontidae y Syngnathidae)., The present PhD thesis investigates the small-sized fish assemblages in the shallow littoral areas of the Mar Menor coastal lagoon. The study was focused on juveniles of migrant fish species that recruit into the lagoon and short-lived resident fish species that spend their entire lives in it.The objectives were:A) To characterize the fish assemblages.B) To examine population biology and habitat associations of benthic fish species.C) To analyse the relationship between littoral habitat types and fish assemblages.The results pointed out the importance of shallow littoral areas of the lagoon as essential habitats for many fish species, both juvenile fish species of commercial interest (Atherinidae, Mugilidae and Sparidae families) and threatened fish species (Cyprinodontidae and Syngnathidae families).

En el presente trabajo se presentan datos sobre la alimentación de juveniles de tres especies de mugílidos presentes en la laguna costera del Mar Menor: Liza saliens (Risso, 1810), L. aurata (Risso, 1810) y L. ramado (Risso, 1810). La dieta fue omnívora para las tres especies, consumiendo una gran variedad de presas, tanto de origen animal como vegetal. Se encontraron diferencias interespecíficas en la composición de la misma, así como diferencias intraespecíficas en función de la campaña de muestreo. Además, se observaron cambios en la dieta en función de la talla de los ejemplares, situación probablemente relacionada con cambios ontogénicos en la dieta de las especies estudiadas. In this work data is presented concerning the food and feeding habits of three species of mullet juveniles that are present in the Mar Menor coastal lagoon: Liza saliens (Risso, 1810), L. aurata (Risso, 1810) and L. ramado (Risso, 1810). Diet of of the three species was omnivorous; they fed on numerous prey items, both animal and vegetal preys. Interspecific differences on diet composition were found, as well as intraspecific differences from sampling periods. Moreover, size-related differences in their feeding habits were found, suggesting the existence of ontogenic changes in the diet of the studied species.

Human induced flow regulation has been suggested as a driver of life history differences among freshwater fish populations. The purpose of the present study is to assess the influence of hydrological flow variability along the longitudinal gradient in the age structure and annual growth rates of a sentinel Iberian fish species, the southern Iberian barbel Luciobarbus sclateri Günther. We analysed populations at site level (25 sampling localities in fluvial sectors) along the longitudinal gradient in the main rivers of the Segura River basin, which is one of the most regulated basins in the Iberian Peninsula. A total of 1560 specimens caught during autumn 2009 and were in situ measured for length. Additionally, a sample was processed in the laboratory to obtain sex determination and growth parameters (age structure and growth rates). The life history of the species was characterized by a medium life span, with at least eleven age-classes detected showing high variability in age structure depending of fluvial sector. The fish growth rates showed significant differences mainly in younger individuals showing highest values in Mundo River, a fluvial sector dominated by high monthly flows. Both the longitudinal gradient pattern and the hydrological variables that accounted for most of the variation in L. sclateri growth traits were difficult to explain probably because the relationships were clouded by the high complexity of the ecological interactions. At the present, studied parameters show that L. sclateri presents a great phenotypic plasticity to adapt to flow changes. This study offers a multi sites perspective of the relationships between barbel growth traits and hydrological variability, providing water resources managers with needed perspective about the effect of human induced alteration of flow magnitudes and regimes.

Population size structure can provide insights in species-specific knowledge and fish management. The purpose of the present study is to assess the influence of hydrological flow variability along the longitudinal gradient in the population size structure metrics of three non-native fish species widely distributed in the Iberian Peninsula, Alburnus alburnus L., Lepomis gibbosus L. and Gobio lozanoi Doadrio & Madeira, 2004. We analysed populations at site level (29 sampling localities in fluvial sectors) along the longitudinal gradient in the main rivers of the Segura River basin, which is one of the most regulated basins in the Iberian Peninsula. The total of 3265 specimens (1636 A. alburnus, 349 L. gibbosus and 1280 G. lozanoi) caught during autumns was measured in situ for length. We explored nine population size metrics (average, median, maximum, minimum, size range, variance, coefficient of variation, skewness and kurtosis of Fork Length). Population size metrics significantly differed at site level and at sector level. Sampling sites directly influenced by a potential refuge of the large reservoirs showed a higher variance in the population size structure of A. alburnus and L. gibbosus, but less variance in the G. lozanoi populations. In fact, flow regulation and the presence of fish refuges to higher discharges have been shown as significant factors to explain the variability in several population size metrics. Documented changes in fish size metrics at population levels can demonstrate trends in non-native fishes at basin scale, however, the collinearity with spatial gradients and the species-specific response could make it a difficult undertaking.

Habitat connectivity is a central factor in shaping aquatic and riverine biological communities, however, few tools exist to maintain and recover this attribute at large scale in fluvial systems. The Segura-Riverlink is a LIFE Programme project which aims to promote and support the environmental recovery of a fluvial sector of the Segura River Basin (more than 50 km long in its main river). The main purpose is to demonstrate and validate management measures for the development of a Green Infrastructure (GI) approach into the context of Mediterranean river basins characterized by a high impact in their connectivity. The project will recover the longitudinal connectivity removing a significant number of artificial barriers to restore fish passage and will also support other best practices of riverine restoration. Restoration actions will include the removal of small weirs and the construction of effective fish passage systems and monitoring will assess the performance of these actions with the hope of validating the GI approach to river basin management and its possible extension to the official management programmes. The project will also develop a Land Custody Network to integrate private owners in the river management and in agreeing good practices. The initial fish-based assessment was completed with significant baseline data showing exotic invasive fishes as dominant and Luciobarbus sclateri as the target species to assess changes at population levels. The project’s outcomes will protect local aquatic and riverine habitats, allow fish reproductive movements along an important fluvial sector, improve ecosystem services, and build a framework of scientific and social knowledge to improve river management quality and to help the implementation and enforcement of EU policy and legislation on biodiversity conservation.

Desde la revisión de Mas (1986) se ha avanzado mucho en el conocimiento sobre la distribución y características poblacionales de los peces continentales de la Cuenca del río Segura. En este trabajo se presentan los cambios históricos observados en su composición específica y la distribución actualizada de las especies en función de los sectores establecidos en dicha revisión. Las características de la comunidad detectada actualmente en tramos fluviales reflejan su notable degradación en comparación con el estado histórico. El número de especies ha aumentado significativamente producto de la introducción de especies foráneas. La tasa de cambio en este componente faunístico ha sido drástica en un periodo inferior a 25 años, maximizándose en los sectores fluviales que han sufrido mayor impacto contaminante y modificador del hábitat. ABSATRACT: Since the review made by Mas (1986), knowledge about the distribution and population characteristics of freshwater fish from the Segura river basin has greatly improved. This paper presents the observed historical changes on species composition and the updated distribution of species in the sectors established in the mentioned review. The traits of the present fish communities reflect a marked degradation compared to the historical status. The number of species has significantly increased due to foreign species introduction. Turnover rate in species composition has been extremely high in less than 25 years, reaching a maximum in river sectors that have suffered greater impacts from pollution and habitat alteration.

El trabajo estudia la estructura de edad, longitud retrocalculada y tasa de crecimiento en poblaciones de Gobio lozanoi a lo largo de los principales ejes fluviales de la cuenca del río Segura (ríos Segura y Mundo). Se analizaron estos parámetros con individuos capturados en otoño de 2009 y en 19 localidades, así como su relación con variables ambientales (altitud, estado ecológico y conductividad). Las poblaciones reflejaron seis clases de edad (0+ a 5+) con escasas diferencias entre sexos y dominancia de edades intermedias (2+ y 3+). La estructura de edades mostró variaciones significativas en el gradiente con tendencia a presentar menor número de clases en localidades a menor altitud. La tasa de crecimiento se relacionó negativamente con la longevidad y mostró diferencias entre sectores fluviales. La tasa de crecimiento en la fase de transición a la madurez mostró tendencia a disminuir con el gradiente, pero también conforme decrece el estado ecológico y aumenta la conductividad. ABSTRACT: The paper studies the age structure, back-calculated length and growth rate of Gobio lozanoi populations along the two main river axes of the Segura river basin (Segura and Mundo rivers). These parameters were analyzed from individuals captured in autumn 2009 and throughout 19 sampling locations, and their relationship with environmental variables (altitude, ecological status and conductivity). Populations showed six age classes (0+ to 5+) with few differences between sexes and dominance of intermediate ages (2+ and 3+). The age structure showed significant variations along the gradient with a tendency to narrower ranges of age in lower altitude locations. Growth rates showed a negative relationship with longevity and significant differences among fluvial sectors. The growth rate in the phase of transition to maturity showed a tendency to decrease with the gradient as well as the ecological state diminished and the water conductivity increased.

El presente estudio analiza las relaciones entre la condición poblacional de Luciobarbus sclateri y los gradientes ambientales a lo largo de ejes longitudinales de la cuenca del río Segura (SE Península Ibérica). El índice residual Kr (obtenido a partir de los valores residuales de las relaciones longitud-peso) fue usado para analizar las diferencias de la condición entre estaciones de muestreo y sus relaciones con las variables medioambientales a escala de macrohábitat, mesohábitat y relacionadas con la comunidad de peces. La condición difiere a escala de localidad y a escala de eje longitudinal (río Segura frente río Mundo). La condición está relacionada con el gradiente longitudinal (calidad de las riberas y estado ecológico), la competencia intra e interespecífica, la abundancia relativa de ictiofauna exótica y la calidad del refugio íctico.

Behavioral alterations can be assessed as variables for sublethal toxicity tests, and serve as a tool for environmental risk assessment and analysis of toxicological impact. In order to investigate contaminant-induced behavioral alterations in fish, a video analysis system was designed to obtain relevant behavioral variables. Data from fish exposed to a reference toxicant, organophosphorus pesticide chlorpyrifos, are presented to exemplify alterations in fish behavior associated with exposure to this pesticide. The developed system provides valuable information on parameters associated with fish behavior and can be used to identify characteristic behavioral responses to a variety of toxicants and assist in risk assessment. La obtención de variables relacionadas con cambios comportamentales en los estudios sobre los efectos subletales de sustancias tóxicas en animales, constituyen una herramienta fundamental para la evaluación del riesgo ambiental y el análisis del impacto de sustancias tóxicas. En el presente trabajo se presenta un sistema de seguimiento y análisis mediante técnicas de visión artificial que permite cuantificar alteraciones en el comportamiento en peces expuestos a concentraciones subletales de sustancias tóxicas. El sistema permite la obtención de una serie de variables comportamentales a partir de un grupo de peces expuestos a una sustancia tóxica, en este caso el insecticida organofosforado clorpirifos, que posteriormente son analizadas para comprobar su desviación frente a un grupo control. Los resultados obtenidos muestran como las variables registradas proporcionan información muy valiosa sobre el comportamiento en peces y constatan que dicho sistema puede ser utilizado para caracterizar las respuestas comportamentales frente a la exposición de sustancias tóxicas y en la evaluación del riesgo ambiental

Los objetivos principales del fueron: 1) inventariar, en términos de composición y distribución, las poblaciones de peces de la cuenca alta del río Segura; 2) clasificar los distintos tramos fluviales en función del estado de conservación de su ictiofauna. Se ha detectado la presencia de 13 especies, 3 autóctonas (Luciobarbus sclateri, Salmo trutta y Squalius pyrenaicus), 3 translocadas desde otras cuencas pero nativas de la Península Ibérica (Cobitis paludica, Gobio lozanoi y Pseudochondrostoma polylepis) y 7 exóticas a la Península Ibéricas (Alburnus alburnus, Cyprinus carpio, Esox lucius, Lepomis gibbosus, Micropterus salmoides, Sander lucioperca y Onchorrhyncus mykiss). Se han diferenciado 3 tipos de tramos fluviales en función del estado de conservación de las comunidades de peces: Tipo 1, estado bueno con dominio de especies autóctonas; Tipo 2, estado intermedio donde dominan las translocadas pero con importantes poblaciones de especies autóctonas; Tipo 3, estado deficiente con dominio de especies introducidas.

We investigated the relationships, at a local level, between fish condition and environmental variables in Gobius cobitis juveniles. The relationships between 14 ecological variables of shallow areas of the Mar Menor coastal lagoon (water temperature, water salinity, depth, submerged vegetation richness, submerged vegetation cover, submerged vegetation volume, substrate size, substrate heterogeneity, fish species richness, potential competitor fish species abundance and biomass, G. cobitis abundance and biomass, G. cobitis biomass/abundance ratio) and fish condition were analysed. The mass-length relationship of juveniles was used to test differences in fish condition between 12 sampling sites. The ecological variables that accounted for most of the variation in fish condition were related to both inter- and intraspecific fish competition., Se investigaron las relaciones, a nivel de localidad, entre el estado de condición de los juveniles de Gobius cobitis y las variables del hábitat. Fueron analizadas las relaciones entre 14 variables del habitat de las zonas someras de la laguna costera del Mar Menor (temperatura del agua, salinidad, profundidad, riqueza de especies de vegetación subacuática, cobertura de la vegetación subacuática, volumen de la vegetación subacuática, granulometría del sustrato, heterogeneidad del sustrato, riqueza de especies de peces, abundancia y biomasa de especies potencialmente competidoras, abundancia y biomasa de G. cobitis, relación biomasa/abundancia de G. cobitis) y el estado de condición de los peces. Las relaciones peso-longitud de los juveniles fueron utilizadas para testar las diferencias en el estado de condición de los peces entre las 12 localidades de muestreo. Las variables del habitat que explicaron la mayor variación en la condición fueron variables relacionadas con la competencia inter- e intraespecífica en peces.
