4. Reliability of the gross motor function classification system and the manual ability classification system in children with cerebral palsy in Tanzania

Abstract

Objectives: Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) and Manual Ability Classification System (MACS) are broadly studied in high-income countries, but data concerning their functioning are lacking in developing countries. Therefore, we analyzed their reliability and sensitivity to change in children with cerebral palsy in Tanzania. Methods: GMFCS and MACS are two ordinal grading systems used to assess motor functions while observing children’s performances. Forty-nine children were classified by two independent physiotherapy students at baseline, after one month and after one year. Reliability and sensitivity to change were analyzed using intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), effect size (ES), standard response mean (SRM), standard error of measurement (SEM), and minimal detectable change (MDC). Results: Inter- (ICC = 0.97/0.95 for GMFCS/MACS) and intra-rater reliability (ICC = 0.98/0.96 GMFCS/MACS) were excellent. Sensitivity to change was small (ES = −0.14/0.11, SRM = −0.24;/0.24 GMFCS/MACS). SEM was 0.2 points, resulting in MDC = 0.5/0.7 for GMFCS/MACS, respectively. Conclusions: GMFCS and MACS demonstrated excellent reliability, but not sensitivity to change.

Abstract

The characterization of 72 Italian honey samples from 8 botanical varieties was carried out by a comprehensive approach exploiting data fusion of IR, NIR and Raman spectroscopies, Proton Transfer Reaction – Time of Flight – Mass Spectrometry (PTR-MS) and electronic nose. High-, mid- and low-level data fusion approaches were tested to verify if the combination of several analytical sources can improve the classification ability of honeys from different botanical origins. Classification was performed on the fused data by Partial Least Squares – Discriminant Analysis; a strict validation protocol was used to estimate the predictive performances of the models. The best results were obtained with high-level data fusion combining Raman and NIR spectroscopy and PTR-MS, with classification performances better than those obtained on single analytical sources (accuracy of 99% and 100% on test and training samples respectively). The combination of just three analytical sources assures a limited time of analysis.

Abstract

As a UNFCCC accredited Research NGO, CO2GeoNet has been deeply involved in bringing the science behind CO2 storage and the rationale for Carbon dioxide Capture and Storage (CCS) to a wide range of stakeholders (including the general public) before, during and after the COP21 Climate Conference in Paris. Key messages on CO2 storage, informed by dialogue with numerous stakeholders, are presented here. The overarching conclusion is that collaboration is needed at an EU and a global level to deploy CCS, a viable and flexible technology ready to play an essential role in completing the climate change mitigation portfolio

Abstract

Carbon dioxide (CO2) separated from natural gas has been stored successfully below the seabed off Norway for almost two decades. Based on these experiences several demonstration projects supported by the EU and its member states are now setting out to store CO2 captured at power plants in offshore geological formations. The ECO2 project was triggered by these activities and funded by the EU to assess the environmental risks associated with the sub-seabed storage of CO2 and to provide guidance on environmental practices. ECO2 conducted a comprehensive offshore field programme at the Norwegian storage sites Sleipner and Snøhvit and at several natural CO2 seepage sites in order to identify potential pathways for CO2 leakage through the overburden, monitor seep sites at the seabed, track and trace the spread of CO2 in ambient bottom waters, and study the response of benthic biota to CO2. ECO2 identified a rich variety of geological structures in the broader vicinity of the storage sites that may have served as conduits for gas release in the geological past and located a seabed fracture and several seeps and abandoned wells where natural gas and formation water are released into the marine environment. Even though leakage may occur if these structures are not avoided during site selection, observations at natural seeps, release experiments, and numerical modelling revealed that the footprint at the seabed where organisms would be impacted by CO2 is small for realistic leakage scenarios. ECO2 conducted additional studies to assess and evaluate the legal framework and the public perception of CO2 storage below the seabed. The following guidelines and recommendations for environmental practices are based on these experiences.

Abstract

The worldwide state of the art about the geosequestration is shown in this paper. How to carry out a complete research in Italy is described in the text, the geology of Italian peninsula is in fact very young and consequently it can induce risks. The most important available geological structures are described, with the useful methodologies to evalute the spaces in the ground, risks and monitoring. In the paper is also introduced the concept of the research of agreement, which is of paramount importance for the success of some activities on the land, especially in a mature and highly populated society.

Abstract

CO2GeoNet is a Network of Excellence on the geological storage of CO2, initiated by the EC's 6th research framework programme in 2004 and integrating Europe's key research institutes to create a scientific reference body dedicated to the development of CO2 geological storage as a viable option for mitigating climate change. It has gained international recognition through bodies such as CSLF and IEA-GHG. It emerges as the world's largest integrated scientific community on this theme. In 2008, the network has been transformed into a legally registered Association, thus reinforcing its identity as a durable entity engaged for the safe and reliable deployment of CO2 geological storage. CO2GeoNet's activities encompass joint research, training, scientific advice, and information and communication on CO2 geological storage. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

42. Psychometric properties of quickdash – a classical test theory and rasch analysis study.

Abstract

Abstract: The aim of this study was to perform a comprehensive psychometric analysis of QuickDASH, using both classical test theory and Rasch analysis, in order to examine in detail its metric properties. A convenience sample of 283 patients with upper limb disorders was enrolled. The QuickDASH item responses were extracted from the subjects’ responses to the official full-length Italian version of DASH. Rating scale diagnostics showed disordered thresholds in some response categories, that were collapsed to optimize categorization. Exploratory factor analysis established unidimensionality of the QuickDASH, except for item 10 ‘tingling’. Similarly, QuickDASH items fitted the Rasch model (MnSq between 0.7 and 1.3) except for item 10, that showed an underfit (Infit MnSq = 1.62; Outfit MnSq = 2.01) and thus was deleted. The Rasch reliability indices of this 10-item QuickDASH were good but not excellent. In conclusion, the unidimensionality of QuickDASH has not been confirmed. Item 10 ‘tingling’ did not belong to the dominant trait. Moreover, the number (and/or wording) of the QuickDASH response categories should undergo further investigation, and the QuickDASH seems more useful for group decisions than for everyday clinical application (i.e. monitoring outcome in single patients). 44. How to assess postsurgical scars: a review of outcome measures.

Abstract

Purpose. Complications of surgical incision include pathological scars with functional, cosmetic or psychological consequences. Postsurgical scar assessment is fundamental for a complete functional evaluation and as an outcome measure. Scar assessment scales are here reviewed and discussed from a clinical and psychometric point of view, with a clear definition of different scar parameters. Method. An extensive review of the English-language literature was conducted using the Medline database. Results. Four scales that satisfy psychometrical criteria were identified: Vancouver Scar Scale (VSS), Patient and Observer Scar Assessment Scale (POSAS), Manchester Scar Scale (MSS) and Stony Brook Scar Evaluation Scale (SBSES). Conclusions. To date, VSS is the most widely used rating scale for scars but POSAS appears the most comprehensive, taking into account the important aspect of patient's perspective.
