11. A Comparison of Key Essential Nutrients in Commercial Plant-Based Pet Foods Sold in Canada to American and European Canine and Feline Dietary Recommendations

Abstract

Plant-based foods intended for feeding dogs and cats are available in Canada, though few studies have examined the suitability of plant-based foods for dogs and cats. All commercial plant-based extruded and wet pet food products available in Ontario, Canada, in 2018 (n = 26) were acquired and analysed for energy, crude protein, crude fat, crude fibre, ash, amino acids, fatty acids, minerals and vitamins A, B12, D2 and D3. Results were compared with recommendations of the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) and the European Pet Food Industry Federation (FEDIAF). Thirteen products were labelled for adult canine maintenance, four for canine all life stages, one for puppy growth, two for adult feline maintenance, three for feline all life stages, one for adult maintenance of dogs and cats and two for all life stages of dogs and cats. Four products met AAFCO and one product met FEDIAF nutrient recommendations for canine maintenance. No diets met AAFCO or FEDIAF recommendations for feline maintenance or growth for either species. Nutrients most commonly found insufficient were: sulfur amino acids, taurine, arachidonic acid, EPA and DHA, calcium phosphorus and vitamin D. There were no nutrients unable to be provided from non-animal sources. Compliance with labelling guidelines was also poor, similar to other findings with commercial animal-based pet products. The results from this study indicate areas where producers of plant-based pet foods must improve to meet the industry recommended nutrient profiles and labelling requirements.

Abstract

AbstractBackgroundThe syndrome of Loeys-Dietz (LDS) is a rare connective tissue disorder. A classic triad of symptoms is seen: hypertelorism, atypical uvula or clef palate, and multiple tortuous arteries and aneurysms of the aorta and main arterial branches. Mutations in genes involving the transforming growth factor-beta (TGFB) signaling pathway are the cause of this syndrome. There are six subtypes of LDS, categorized based on the gene mutation that is involved. LDS type V and VI, concerning the TGFB3 and SMAD2 gene respectively, are the two subtypes that are least frequently seen. Mostly, in the patients with LDS type V non-cardiovascular symptoms are most prominent and there is a lower prevalence of vascular abnormalities.Methods and resultsThis case report illustrates extensive vascular disease in Loeys-Dietz syndrome type V. We present open repair of a true deep femoral artery aneurysm and two-staged repair of a giant common iliac aneurysm with coiling of an ipsilateral internal iliac artery aneurysm and subsequent endovascular aortic repair (EVAR).ConclusionLoeys-Dietz syndrome type V is a rare connective tissue disorder, that was thought to have non-cardiovascular symptoms at the forefront. However, this case represents multiple vascular abnormalities, including arterial tortuosity and iliac and femoral artery aneurysms, as the main symptom in LDS type V, presents our multi-stage treatment and discusses the different therapeutic strategies.

13. Handgrip strength and health outcomes in hospitalized children or children with chronic disease: A systematic review

Abstract

Handgrip strength (HGS) is a simple measurement of maximum voluntary muscle strength and is widely used as a single indicator of overall muscle strength. This systematic review summarized the evidence about the relation between HGS and health outcomes in hospitalized children or chronically ill children. The primary outcome was the number of hospital days in a 2‐month period for outpatients and the length of hospital stay for inpatients. After a systematic search in PubMed, Embase, Lilacs, and the Cochrane Library, 9282 unique papers were screened, 24 included. Studies assessed HGS in children with cystic fibrosis, neuromuscular disease, chronic kidney disease, type 1 diabetes mellitus, asthma, cardiac disease, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, intestinal failure, surgical patients, and a mixed hospitalized population. One study reported that children experienced a decline in HGS during hospitalization which was associated with prolonged hospital stay. Another reported no relation with the number of hospital days in 5 years. No studies reported on the association between HGS and infectious complications or antibiotic use. We did find a positive correlation between HGS and quality of life, different nutritional parameters and inflammatory biochemical markers. We concluded that the relation between HGS and hospital stay in children is poorly studied. HGS showed promise as a functional biomarker for children with chronic health conditions when inflammation is involved, but more attention should be paid to the methodological aspects of assessing HGS. Abstract

Feline obesity continues to be a priority health and welfare issue. Most research surrounding obesity currently focuses on obesity treatment. However, treatment for feline obesity is slow, often unsuccessful and not without consequences. Identifying high-risk populations for obesity onset is crucial for developing and implementing preventive strategies. This review identifies post-gonadectomy kittens aged 5–12 months as the primary target population for obesity prevention in domestic cats and highlights dietary and feeding management strategies to be implemented for obesity prevention.
