Abstract

Pilot heuristics of flying an aircraft are implemented in the design of a fuzzy logic controller (FLC). The FLC design exists of longitudinal and lateral outer loop tracking controllers combined with classical inner loop attitude controllers. The first step includes tuning the inner loop controllers using classical control techniques. Next, the FLCs outer loop controllers are initialized as linear, MIMO controllers in which the rules are derived from control strategies based on the experience of pilots. The final step includes fine-tuning of the FLCs by modifying the rules based on an initial evaluation of time responses with respect to the specifications. Additional rules for low airspeed and engine failure are included as well, which show that gain scheduling and exception handling can be incorporated in a straightforward way. Following this three-step procedure, a compromise is found in which performance and robustness properties are met at the cost of a slightly too high vertical and lateral acceleration. Abstract

This paper addresses the optimization in fuzzy model predictive control. When the prediction model is a nonlinear fuzzy model, nonconvex, time-consuming optimization is necessary, with no guarantee of finding an optimal solution. A possible way around this problem is to linearize the fuzzy model at the current operating point and use linear predictive control (i.e., quadratic programming). For long-range predictive control, however, the influence of the linearization error may significantly deteriorate the performance. In our approach, this is remedied by linearizing the fuzzy model along the predicted input and output trajectories. One can further improve the model prediction by iteratively applying the optimized control sequence to the fuzzy model and linearizing along the so obtained simulated trajectories. Four different methods for the construction of the optimization problem are proposed, making difference between the cases when a single linear model or a set of linear models are used. By choosing an appropriate method, the user can achieve a desired tradeoff between the control performance and the computational load. The proposed techniques have been tested and evaluated using two simulated industrial benchmarks: pH control in a continuous stirred tank reactor and a high-purity distillation column. In the paper a simulation environment for evaluation of knowledge based fault diagnostic systems is presented. The contribution deals with the concept of the environment that provides an integration of qualitative and quantitative models. This concept is presented on a simulated water-column process controlled by feedback. The simulation environment is used to evaluate the potentials of Multilevel Flow Modelling (MFM) approach to system diagnosis. The environment is realized within the real-time expert system tool G2.
