A 3‐year‐old female neutered ferret presented with progressive weight loss was diagnosed with portosystemic shunting based on increased fasting bile acids, rectal ammonia tolerance testing and advanced imaging. Ammonia reference values were determined in 16 healthy ferrets. A congenital extrahepatic spleno‐caval shunt was visualised with ultrasonography and CT angiography of the abdomen. Complete surgical shunt closure by suture ligation was performed, without clinical improvement after surgery. Euthanasia was elected 4 months postoperatively because the clinical condition deteriorated. This is a case report of advanced diagnostics and surgical treatment of a congenital extrahepatic portosystemic shunt in a ferret, demonstrating rectal ammonia tolerance testing and imaging as feasible techniques for the diagnosis. Inoculation of embryonated chicken eggs has been widely used during the past decades; however, inoculation success rates have not been investigated systematically. In this study named success rates were assessed in brown eggs incubated between 5 and 19 days, which were inoculated with 0.2 ml methylene blue per egg. Inoculations were performed in a simple and fully standardized way. Five embryonic compartments were targeted blindly (amniotic cavity, embryo, allantoic cavity, albumen and yolk) with needles of four different lengths; albumen and yolk were targeted with eggs in upside down position. Three compartments were inoculated within sight (air chamber, chorioallantoic membrane and blood vessel). Twenty embryos were used per incubation day, intended deposition site and needle length. Success rates were assessed by visual inspection after breaking the eggs. The inoculations targeting albumen, yolk, amniotic cavity and embryo yielded low scores. Magnetic resonance imaging was performed to elucidate the reason(s) for these low success rates: needles used were of appropriate length, but embryo and amniotic cavity had variable positions in the eggs, while albumen and yolk rapidly changed position after turning the eggs upside down. The latter led to adjustment of the inoculation method for albumen and yolk. Failures to inoculate compartments within sight were immediately visible; therefore, these eggs could be discarded. Except for the amniotic cavity, full scores (20/20) were obtained for all compartments although not always on every day of incubation. In conclusion, the present study may serve as a guide to more accurately inoculate the various chicken embryo compartments. Summary: This case report describes a retrobulbar dermoid cyst in an 18‐year‐old pony with an invasive character into the frontal sinus. CT imaging was important for the appropriate management of this case and the definitive diagnosis was obtained from histopathology. Surgical excision was performed successfully without recurrence 1‐year post‐operatively. The pony returned to its intended use and previous performance level, although complaints of mild symptoms of headshaking were noted in bright light only. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Diseases of the coxofemoral (hip) joint are infrequently diagnosed in horses. Most cases are presented as an unilateral condition and usually are of traumatic origin. This case report describes a Friesian foal with a clinically obvious thoracolumbar kyphosis, combined with a weight-shifting stance and a shortened stride of both hindlimbs. General clinical and lameness examinations, computed tomographic examination of the pelvis, and macroscopic and histopathological examinations of the coxofemoral joints were performed. This revealed a final, phenotypical diagnosis of a primary osteochondral dysplasia of both coxofemoral joints with secondary osteoarthritis. Similar to the occurrence of this condition in other species and considering the small genetic basis of the Friesian horse breed, a genetic predisposing factor is suspected to play a key role in the developing mechanism of dysplastic coxofemoral joint disease in horses as illustrated with this case. Computed tomography scanning appears to be a useful imaging technique in the detection of coxofemoral joint disease in small horses and foals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of this study was to evaluate a non-resorbable implant for the focal repair of chondral defects in eight adult horses with 12-month follow-up. The bi-layered construct composed of a polycarbonate-urethane-urea biomaterial which was printed in 3D fashion onto a bone anchor was implanted into surgically created osteochondral defects into the femoropatellar joints of eight horses. The analysis of post-mortem outcomes were compared to defects treated with microfracture in the same animal on the contralateral femoropatellar jointfemoropatellar joint. The overall macroscopic scoring after 12 months yielded higher scores in the OCI-treated stifles compared to MF treatment (p = 0.09) with better quality and filling of the defect. Histology revealed good anchorage of repair tissue growing into the 3D structure of the implant and histopathology scoring for adjacent native cartilage showed no difference between groups. MRI and micro-CT showed overall less sclerotic reactions in the surrounding bone in the implant group and no foreign body reaction was detected. Biomechanical analysis of the repair tissue revealed a significantly higher peak modulus (p < 0.05) in the implant group (0.74 ± 0.45) compared to the microfracture control group (0.15 ± 0.11). Dynamic loading yielded higher values for the repair tissue overgrowing the implant group (0.23 ± 0.17) compared to the microfracture control (0.06 ± 0.06) (p < 0.05). The bi-layered osteochondral implant provided a safe implant for focal repair of full-thickness osteochondral defects, as no adverse reaction was seen within the joints and the level of degeneration of adjacent cartilage to the repair site was not different compared to that seen in defects treated with microfracture after 12 months., (© 2024 The Author(s). Background: Data on equine thoracic pathology hardly exist in breeds other than Thoroughbreds., Objectives: To describe pathological changes of the osseous thoracic vertebral column in Warmblood horses, Shetland ponies and Konik horses, and to compare prevalence and severity., Study Design: Descriptive post-mortem study., Methods: Computed tomography was used to examine the thoracic vertebral column of 34 Warmblood horses, 28 Shetland ponies, and 18 Konik horses. Osteoarthritis (OA), periarticular osteolysis, osseous cyst-like lesions and fragments of articular processes (APJs), costovertebral and costotransverse joints, soft tissue mineralisation surrounding these joints, intervertebral disc (IVD) mineralisation, impingement of spinous processes (SPs) and spondylosis were scored., Results: APJ aplasia (98%; 58/59) occurred in 14 Shetland ponies. OA predominated in Warmblood horses across all joints (45% vs. 29 and 32%, p < 0.001). OA and periarticular osteolysis were found in particular in the costotransverse joints (p < 0.001) across all breeds. Warmblood and Konik horses had more and severe soft tissue mineralisation than Shetland ponies (2.3%, score 1.5 and 3.2%, score 1.3, respectively, vs. 0.3%, score 0.9, p < 0.01). Mid location was most often affected with highest severity score (4.2%, 1.5, p < 0.001). Konik horses displayed the highest IVD mineralisation (20%, p < 0.001), which notably increased with age (p < 0.001) compared with Warmblood horses (4.5%) and Shetland ponies (1.1%). SPs impingement was absent in Shetland ponies, and most prevalent in Warmblood horses (11.2%, p < 0.001) compared with Konik horses (2.2%). Osseous cyst-like lesions, fragments and spondylosis were minimal in all breeds and nearly absent in Shetland ponies., Main Limitations: Clinical histories and macroscopic and histologic examinations were unavailable., Conclusions: Distinct breed differences exist in prevalence and severity of thoracic vertebral column osseous pathologies. Costotransverse joint pathology is more common than APJ pathology in all breeds. Warmblood horses are prone to OA, spondylosis and SPs impingement; Konik horses exhibit significant IVD mineralisation, and Shetland ponies demonstrate a high prevalence of APJ aplasia. Lumbosacral intervertebral disc herniation (IVDH) is a common cause of lower back pain in dogs and humans. In humans, the vertebral endplate to annulus fibrosus (AF) attachment was implicated as an alternative failure site besides rupture through the dorsal AF (AFF). Endplate junction failure (EPJF) is characterized by IVDH, accompanied by endplate irregularities (type A), rim avulsions (type B), or larger bony avulsions on one (type C) or both endplates (type D), associated with an adjacent endplate defect. This retrospective study reports the CT prevalence of presumed EPJF in dogs and its associations with signalment and other lumbosacral CT abnormalities. CT scans, including the lumbosacral spine of dogs obtained at two institutions, were assessed, yielding 324 scans. Presumed EPJF was found in 69 dogs (21%) and AFF in 68 dogs (21%), commonly at the caudal endplate of the last lumbar vertebra (71%). The remaining 187 dogs did not show presumed EPJF or AFF. Presumed EPJF type A occurred in 49/69, type B in 19/69, and type C in 1/69 dogs. Univariable logistic regression showed that presumed EPJF was associated with significantly higher IVDH grades than AFF. In the multiple regression model, presumed EPJF and AFF remained associated with increasing age and spondylosis deformans. Presumed EPJF was associated with vertebral endplate sclerosis and AFF with zygapophyseal joint osteoarthritis. In conclusion, presumed EPJF was observed on CT in 21% of dogs with lumbosacral IVDH. Prospective studies correlating EPJF on CT with clinical, surgical, and histopathological findings are needed for a better understanding of the underlying pathology and clinical relevance., (© 2024 The Author(s). The Asiatic lion ( Panthera leo persica ) is an endangered species with a slowly increasing captive and wild population. Several zoos from within the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria Ex Situ Program reported Asiatic lions with neurological signs such as (progressive) ataxia, and stargazing. The aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency (prevalence and incidence) and etiology of these clinical signs within the captive Asiatic lion population. The medical history of 74 Asiatic lions (36 healthy and 38 affected) was retrieved and reviewed for blood tests (biochemical, hematological, and retinol), diagnostic imaging (MRI and CT scans) and postmortem examinations. The data of the affected lions was compared with those of healthy lions. Between 2002 and 2020, the prevalence of ataxia ranged from 0.6% in 2004 to 13.0% in 2020. The incidence of ataxia was variable per year between 2002 and 2020 and ranged between 0 and 40%. Besides ataxia, stiffness and lameness were the most described signs in this study. Blood results showed lower total protein, ALT and creatinine, and higher phosphate in lions with neurological signs. Moreover, neurologically affected lions showed a significant lower blood retinol than the control lions (0.59-0.81 µmol/L). The most important finding in diagnostic imaging and necropsy included caudal fossa hyperostosis and cerebellar herniation. These abnormalities are similar as found in African lions ( Panthera leo ) with calvarial hyperostosis syndrome associated with vitamin A deficiency. Leucomyelopathy, syringomyelia (in one case combined with cerebellar herniation) and incidental mineralization of the dura mater were also described. A possible congenital/hereditary component should not be excluded.

Background: Data on equine lumbar pathology hardly exist in breeds other than Thoroughbreds., Objectives: To describe pathological changes of the osseous lumbar vertebral column in Warmblood horses, Shetland ponies and Konik horses., Study Design: Descriptive post-mortem study., Methods: The lumbar vertebral columns of 34 Warmblood horses, 28 Shetland ponies, and 18 Konik horses were examined by computed tomography (CT). Osteoarthritis (OA) of articular processes (APJs), OA of intertransverse joints (ITJs), intervertebral disc (IVD) mineralisation, impingement of spinous (SPs) and transverse (TPs) processes and spondylosis were scored. Breed differences in prevalence and severity of pathologies were analysed by linear regression analysis and by calculating Spearman's rank correlation coefficients (r s )., Results: In Warmblood horses, the prevalence of OA of APJs, impingement of SPs and TPs was respectively 90%, 36%, and 35%, significantly higher than in the other breeds (p < 0.001). In Konik horses, IVD mineralisation (40%) and spondylosis (10%) were more frequent than in Warmbloods and Shetland ponies (p = 0.03). Severity score for OA of ITJs was highest in Shetland ponies (p < 0.001). For impingement of SPs, severity score was highest in Warmbloods (p = 0.03), and of TPs lowest in Shetland ponies (p = 0.003). For all parameters, except for spondylosis in Shetland ponies, there was a positive correlation between percentage of vertebrae affected and age, with IVD mineralisation scores increasing faster in Konik horses (p < 0.001). In all breeds, there was also a positive relation between scores of severity and age for OA of APJs and ITJs and for IVD mineralisation, with severity scores increasing faster in Shetland ponies (p = 0.04). Strong left/right correlations of the severity scores were seen for OA of the APJ, ITJ, impingement of TPs, and paramedian spondylosis (r s  = 0.74-0.86, all p < 0.001)., Main Limitations: Clinical histories were not available., Conclusions: There are distinct breed differences between prevalence and severity of osseous pathologies of the lumbar spine. Residual thymic tissue is a common incidental finding in thoracic CT of human adults. To determine whether presumed residual thymic tissue is also a common incidental finding in adult dogs, a two part-study was performed. The first part was a prospective, descriptive design where CT examination was performed in six canine cadavers within 24 h after death and presumed residual thymic tissue was examined pathologically. The second part of the study was a retrospective, analytical design where medical records of our institution were searched for thoracic CT scans of adult dogs performed in the year 2020. Age, sex, breed, presence of presumed thymic tissue, location, shape, attenuation, homogeneity, and width of the tissue were recorded and comparisons were performed using these data. In 4 of 6 of the prospective cases, thymic tissue was present on histology and in 2 of 6 dogs the presence of thymic tissue could not be confirmed. For the retrospective study, in 161/169 (95.3%) cases with presumed residual thymic tissue were detected. Shape and size were highly variable with either homogeneous (46.6%), heterogeneous (42.9%), or mixed (10.6%) attenuation. Dogs with presumed residual thymic tissue were significantly younger (median: 9.1 years; range: 1.2-14.3 vs. median: 10.5 years; range: 9.4-12.3) as were dogs with homogeneous attenuation of the tissue (median: 8.1 years; range: 1.2-14.3 vs. median: 9.5 years; range: 4.0-14.3).
