Introduction. The key step in agent-based modeling of epidemics, which allows researchers to take into account individual characteristics of people, is the creation of an artificial population. The main difficulty of this procedure is finding a balance between the detail of the population description and the computational efficiency of the calculations. The aim and objectives of the review: Critically analyze and summarize the current evidence on how to create artificial populations; evaluate the limitations and advantages of available approaches in solving various problems in epidemiology. Materials and methods. An analysis of literature sources devoted to agent-based modeling has been performed. The analysis is focused on algorithms for creating an artificial population with a given level of detail for modeling human respiratory infections. Results. The approaches to the creation of artificial populations are generalized. The main principles of realization of interaction between agents are revealed: by means of networks of contacts between agents and on the basis of taking into account the movement of agents between locations. The first approach is the most computationally efficient and simple; the second approach allows to better take into account the change in the behavior of agents during the development of the epidemic process. Conclusion. Agent-based modeling is an optimal tool for selecting the best scenario for epidemic control and investigating the role of individual characteristics of people in the development of epidemics. When creating an artificial population, it is important to include in the model factors that can be targeted for control. A significant limitation is the lack of factual data on population structure, but this can be overcome by using indirect data.

Background. According to statistics, the number of obese people is growing rapidly. Attitude to one's own weight, as well as a negative assessment of appearance by others, can negatively affect self-esteem, lead to psychological and emotional problems. Values are a fundamental component of personality. They will include concepts and beliefs that transcend specific situations and guide the choice or assessment of behavior or events (Schwartz S. H.). Taboos and stigma associated with excess weight can greatly affect the quality of life of women, limiting their social contacts, career opportunities and individual self-expression (Zenkov A. S.; Polskaya N.A., Yakubovskaya D.K.; Sayamov Yu.N.; Brewis A.; Dressler W. W.). The analysis of the value sphere will help to identify social, cultural beliefs and attitudes related to overweight in women. The purpose of our study was to determine the characteristics of the value sphere of overweight women. The sample consisted of two groups of 15 people. The first group included overweight women who turned to a psychologist or nutritionist with this problem. The second group includes women with a standard weight. Three diagnostic methods were used to study the features of the value sphere «The level of value and accessibility in various spheres of life» (E. B. Fantalova); «Portrait value questionnaire» (Sh. Schwartz); «Morphological test of life values» (V.F. Sopov L.V. Karpushina. The results of the study (without taking into account statistical processing data) showed that the value sphere of overweight women is characterized by a lower value-accessibility discrepancy index; higher values of stimulation, interpersonal conformity and universalism (in relation to other people and the environment); the importance of the value of spiritual satisfaction and the life sphere of hobbies is more developed.

Background. It was revealed in 2020 that immunization of children in decreed times in several subjects of Russian Federation was below the standard level. Therefore, monitoring of timely vaccination in children of these regions was relevant. Objective. The aim of the study is to evaluate changes in the timeliness of vaccination in children of two subjects of Russian Federation with low immunization rates according to 2020 data. Methods. Immunization of children born in 2015–2017 and 2020–2022 were studied according to the form of federal statistical monitoring (FFSM) No. 6 and vaccination record cards (form No. 063/y) obtained from children's polyclinics of the Republic of Bashkortostan (two in 2020 and three in 2023) and the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) (two in 2020 and four in 2023). The vaccination timeliness among children against infections from the national immunization schedule (NIS) list was determined. The timeliness of vaccination was evaluated by the proportion of children who received the required number of vaccine doses against each of the infection from the NIS list by the decreed age among all persons of the decreed age. Results. Data from 998 records was analyzed. The increase in timely vaccination against all vaccine-controlled infections in children was revealed. The proportion of children vaccinated according to the NIS has increased by 1.5–4 times. Timely vaccination of 95% children in the decreed age (by FFSM No. 6) was achieved in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) against tuberculosis, hepatitis B, measles, rubella, and mumps, and in the Republic of Bashkortostan against measles, rubella, and mumps. The increase in the multivalent vaccines’ usage and simultaneous administration of several vaccines has been discovered. Conclusion. Monitoring the level of documented immunization and timely vaccination in children allows effectively control routine immunization quality. Implementation of multivalent vaccines and simultaneous administration of several vaccines in routine immunization provides radical change in the vaccination rate in pediatric population.

The functional role of sweating is not limited only to thermoregulation and excretion. There are other functions of it — the ability to enhance and maintain hydration and barrier function of the skin. Excessive sweating can lead to an exacerbation or cause many skin diseases, form psychological discomfort in a person due to wet clothes or an accompanying unpleasant odor. Primary hyperhidrosis may be an autosomal dominant genetic disease. Secondary, usually generalized hyperhidrosis is often associated with drug effects on the body or a systemic disease. The following approaches are used in the treatment of hyperhidrosis: 1) blocking the release of sweat to the skin surface (aluminum salts and formaldehyde); 2) physiotherapy (iontophoresis); 3) destruction of sweat glands and cessation of sweat production (excision of a skin flap with subcutaneous fat, curettage, microwave technology, etc.); 4) termination of the signal from the central nervous system to the sweat glands (transthoracic endoscopic sympathectomy, percutaneous radiofrequency sympathectomy, botulinum toxin injections, systemic anticholinergic drugs). External remedies for excessive sweating include the Russian drug Formagel®, containing 3.7% formaldehyde. This drug is a non-invasive, easily doable, effective, safe method of treating hyperhidrosis.

This article aims to explore the significant challenges posed by phenomenological un­translatables while also emphasizing their role as cultural phenomena. Phenomenological untranslatables are typically associated with a specific cultural, historical, or social context, and their meanings are shaped by the unique experiences of the community that uses them. They encode complex elements of human perception, emotions, or phenomena that do not have direct equivalents in other languages. Yet, the absence of direct linguistic equivalents should not be misconstrued as the absence of shared human experiences. By employing a multidisci­plinary approach that encompasses linguistics, cognitive science, and cultural studies, we have conducted an analysis of the conceptual framework underlying this type of lexis and identified macro- and micro-conceptual attributes that may necessitate various verbalizations in different cultural and contextual settings.

Bioaccumulation of dissolved elemental mercury (DGM) by various organisms has been demonstrated, but no study has shown its uptake and sequestration by phytoplankton species. The present study aims to investigate the accumulation of mercury by phytoplankton species exposed to DGM. Diatoms (Cyclotella meneghiniana and Navicula pelliculosa) and green algae (Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and Haematococcus pluvialis) were exposed to constant high level of atmospheric gaseous Hg (∼7.7 µg m−3). Total mercury concentrations (THg) in the medium (dissolved fraction) and algae cells (cellular fraction) were determined using cold vapor atomic fluorescence spectroscopy. Results revealed a partitioning of Hg(0) between the atmosphere and phytoplankton cultures, with THg predominantly found in the algae cells. THg in the algae cultures decreased in the order: C. reinhardtii > H. pluvialis > N. pelliculosa > C. meneghiniana. However, the cellular concentration (mol cell−1) decreased in the order: H. pluvialis > C. reinhardtii > C. meneghiniana > N. pelliculosa. These results highlight species specificity in Hg accumulation upon exposure to DGM, further linked to the phytoplankton surface area. Our findings reveal for the first time that phytoplankton species significantly influence the partitioning of atmospheric Hg(0) in aquatic environments, with important implications for the understanding of the aquatic mercury cycle.

Mercury is a highly toxic trace metal that can accumulate in aquatic ecosystems and when resent at high concentrations can pose risks to both aquatic life and humans consuming contaminated fish. This research explores the use of the metalloregulatory protein MerR, known for its high affinity and selectivity toward mercury, in a novel application. Through a cell surface engineering approach, MerR was displayed on cells of green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. A hydroxyproline-rich GP1 protein was used as an anchor to construct the engineered strains GP1-MerR that expresses the fluorescent protein mVenus. The surface engineered GP1-MerR strain led up to five folds higher Hg2+ accumulation compared to the WT strain at concentration range from 10-9 to 10-7 M Hg2+. The binding of Hg2+ via MerR was specific and did not get significantly affected by major freshwater water quality variables such as Ca2+ and dissolved organic matter. The presence of other trace metals (Zn2+, Cu2+, Ni2+, Pb2+, Cd2+) in a same concentration range even resulted in 30–40 % increase in the accumulated Hg. Further, the engineered cells also demonstrated the ability to accumulate Hg2+ from the water extracts of the Hg-contaminated sediment samples. These results demonstrate a novel approach utilizing the cell surface display system in C. reinhardtii for its potential application in bioremediation.

Background. To determine unknown solutions of canonical hyperbolic differential equations for functions of two variables, it seemed relevant to establish the connection of the first-order differential isomorphisms of these equations with Laplace transformations. Materials and methods. To study the first-order isomorphisms, the theorem on the representation of isomorphisms by linear differential translators is applied. Direct actions with differential operators are used. Results and conclusions. The theorem is proved that any firstorder differential isomorphism between canonical differential equations with real analytic coefficients is a composition of the first-order and zero-order Laplace transformations. This makes it possible to expand the scope of application of classical Laplace transformations.

Relevance. Tense ecological situation in the impact zone of the large industrial complex of Usolye-Sibirskoe on the Angara river, search for sources and ways of pollutants inflow during different periods of technogenic load, necessary to assess and forecast the current changes in the aquatic ecosystem. Aim. To study chemical composition of wastewater from the industrial zone of Usolye-Sibirskoe during different periods of technogenic load and assess their impact on hydrochemical parameters of the Angara river water. Objects. Wastewater from the industrial zone of Usolye-Sibirskoe and Angara river waters in the impact area during the period of high technogenic load (2010) and the period of its reduction (2020). Methods. Chemical composition of wastewater and natural water was determined in the Center of Collective Use «Isotope-Geochemical Investigations» of Vinogradov Institute of Geochemistry SB RAS (Irkutsk, Russia). Concentrations of major ions in waters were measured using a set of methods generally accepted in hydrochemistry (atomic absorption and atomic emission flame spectrometry, spectrophotometry, potentiometry, titrimetry), Hg concentration was measured using atomic absorption spectrometry, concentrations of other trace elements – using mass spectrometry method (ISP MS). Results. The authors have revealed significant changes in chemical composition of wastewater of the industrial zone in different periods of technogenic load, reflecting the transformation of pollution sources during the liquidation of technogenic objects of the area. Over the ten-year period particularly important changes are expressed in a significant decrease of Hg, Al, Cs, Ti, Cr, Cl– and Na+ concentrations and increase of Mn concentrations in the wastewater of the industrial zone. This is reflected, in its turn, in the dynamics of hydrochemical composition of Angara river water in the impact area. In 2010 a regular consecutive decrease of most of elements concentrations was observed with distance of Angara river waters from technogenic sources. Where as in 2020 their spatial distribution is opposite: with a significant decrease in concentrations of most of the studied elements at the river site 50 m downstream of industrial discharges, their increase was detected at more distant monitoring stations (1.5 and 5 km) where Mn, Cu, Cd and Tl concentrations were the highest. Despite significant changes in wastewater chemical composition in different periods of technogenic load, the Angara river waters at all monitoring stations in the impact zone of the industrial complex of Usolye-Sibirskoe are polluted.

Background: Knowledge of COVID-19 preventive measures, in addition to appropriate practices of such measures, remains a necessity for the prevention of contracting COVID-19 by nurses. This study assessed nurses' knowledge and practice of COVID-19 preventive strategies. It also determined the influence of sociodemographic variables on the knowledge of preventive measures for COVID-19 among nurses. Materials and Methods: The study adopted a descriptive cross-sectional survey design using multi-stage sampling to recruit 344 nurses. Results: The results showed that 92% of the nurses had adequate knowledge of COVID-19 preventive measures. The practice of COVID-19 preventive measures among nurses showed that 98.80% had sufficient knowledge of the infection preventive measures. Nurses with Registered Nurse/Registered Midwife (RN/RM-AOR 12.30; CI 4.79–31.63; p = 0.001) and Bachelor of science in nursing (BScN-AOR 37.60; CI 7.644-184.95; p = 0.001) were more knowledgeable about the COVID-19 preventive compared to other nurses with higher degree qualifications. Conclusions: The nurses in the study had good knowledge of the preventive measures for COVID-19 despite not being trained as frontline staff. It is essential to transform theory into practice by ensuring that the preventive measures they know are implemented to halt the spread of the disease in the face of minimal vaccine coverage.

This paper is a comparative study of the advantages of the influence of implementing digital tools and the quality of human knowledge on the improvement of product quality. We substantiate the role of the human factor in the formation of competitive knowledge that is necessary for implementing ambitious goals of companies in the achievement of competitive advantages in the sphere of continuous improvement of product quality. We also prove the necessity for supporting the level of human knowledge competitiveness, which will facilitate the increase in product quality and social justice (employment level). To reach the goals of this research, we use the index method, comparative analysis and cause-effect relationships method. The novel aspect of this paper is connected with the determination of the specifics and advantages of using the quality of human knowledge and digital technologies for achieving the goals of the growth of product quality, which allows forming the current directions for the creation of efficient solutions for further industrial growth.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic allergic skin disease, the most common of dermatoses during pregnancy. Exacerbation of AD can be at any stage of pregnancy, its main causes are an increase in progesterone levels, the predominance of Th2 cytokines, psychoemotional stress, violations of the gastrointestinal tract. Changes occur in the clinical picture, the lesions on the face and extensor surfaces of the extremities, papules. Treatment options for pregnant women are limited due to the unethical nature of clinical trials. It is safe to use topical glucocorticosteroids, moisturizers, narrow-band UVB 311 nm, calcineurin inhibitors are relatively safe. In systemic therapy in severe cases, the use of cyclosporine or a short course of prednisone is recommended. There is no evidence of the safety of selective immunosuppressants.

The present review critically examines the advancements in the past 5 years regarding research on the bioavailability and toxicity of the nanoplastics (NPLs) to freshwater plankton. We discuss the recent progress in the understanding of adsorption, absorption, trophic transfer, and biological effects in phyto- and zooplankton induced by NPLs exposure. The influence of plankton on NPLs’ bioavailability via the excretion of biomolecules and formation of eco-corona is also examined. Despite important research developments, there are still considerable knowledge gaps with respect to NPLs’ bioavailability and trophic transfer by plankton as well as a potential adverse effect in natural aquatic systems. As plankton play a critical role in primary production, nutrient cycling, and food web structure, understanding the interactions between NPLs and plankton is essential in assessing the potential implications of NPLs pollution for aquatic ecosystem biodiversity and services.

The terpolymers of N-vinylpyrrolidone (VP) with acrylic acid and triethylene glycol methacrylate were synthesized with more than 90% yield by radical copolymerization in ethanol from monomeric mixtures of different molar composition (98:2:2, 95:5: 2 and 98:2:5) and their monomer composition, absolute molecular masses and hydrodynamic radii in aqueous media were determined. Using the MTT test, these terpolymers were established to be low toxic for non-tumor Vero cells and HeLa tumor cells. Polymer compositions of hydrophobic dye methyl pheophorbide a (MPP) based on studied terpolymers and linear polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) were obtained and characterized in water solution. Quantum-chemical modeling of the MPP-copolymer structures was conducted, and the possibility of hydrogen bond formation between terpolymer units and the MPP molecule was shown. Using fluorescence microscopy, the accumulation and distribution of polymer particles in non-tumor (FetMSC) and tumor (HeLa) cells was studied, and an increase in the accumulation of MPP with both types of particles was found.

ЦЕЛЬ ИССЛЕДОВАНИЯ: Обосновать рекомендации по внедрению концепции и технологий цифровизации службы анестезиологии и реаниматологии (АиР) в многопрофильных стационарах для решения задач обеспечения безопасности пациентов и медицинского персонала. МАТЕРИАЛЫ И МЕТОДЫ: В исследовании представлены данные по внедрению информационных технологий в практику службы АиР на основании сведений, полученных при анкетировании 235 специалистов по АиР, работающих на руководящих должностях в различных категориях учреждений здравоохранения. Метод сбора информации: самостоятельное заполнение экспертами онлайн-версии анкеты. Принцип построения выборки: преднамеренный. Период проведения опроса: 12 апреля 2023 г. — 4 августа 2023 г. РЕЗУЛЬТАТЫ: В 87 % стационаров медицинская информационная система (МИС) службы АиР является частью МИС учреждения. Лишь в 23 % больниц все рабочие места врача — анестезиолога-реаниматолога подключены к МИС. Вход на персональное электронное рабочее место по правам доступа на любом из персональных компьютеров подтвердили 87 % респондентов. Стационары, в которых анестезиологическое и реанимационное оборудование не интегрировано в МИС, составляют 89 %. В случае отделений с локальной информационной системой АиР к ней подключено оборудование в 44 % аналогичных отделений. По данным опроса, только в 51 % медицинских учреждений информационная система АиР получает данные с лабораторной информационной системы, показатели интегрированности с радиологической информационной системой еще ниже и составляют всего 34 %. Исследование выявило значимую проблему с внедрением в МИС клинических рекомендаций, справочников лекарственных средств, а также протоколов профилактики и манипуляций, различных требований, и особенно шкал/индексов для оценки состояния пациентов. ВЫВОДЫ: Для полноценного функционирования МИС необходимы организационные решения, направленные на реализацию первостепенных и перспективных задач. Разработка и применение современных МИС в АиР будут способствовать дальнейшему развитию специальности и обеспечению безопасности пациентов и надлежащего качества оказания медицинской помощи. Необходима унификация требований к разработчикам МИС по основным составляющим, обязательным в функционале.

Relevance. The necessity to control the hydrochemical regime of water bodies significantly affected by anthropogenic impacts. Aim. To study the spatial distribution of major ions and trace element concentrations and identify natural and anthropogenic formation factors of the hydrochemical composition of the Vikhoreva river and Ust-Vikhorevsky bay of the Ust-Ilimsk reservoir. Objects. Waters of the Vikhoreva river before and after inflow of wastewater from the Bratsk industrial zone, waters of the Ust-Vikhorevsky bay (Vikhorevskaya and Burdoyskaya parts) of the Ust-Ilimsk reservoir. Methods. Determination of micronutrients concentrations in water was performed by inductive coupled plasma mass spectrometry, mercury – by atomic absorption method. Cations and anions were determined using standard methods accepted in hydrochemical studies, Sorg – by titrimetric method, oxygen – by iodometric method. Results. In the Vihoreva river water after wastewater inflow from the Bratsk industrial zone, significant transformations of its hydrochemical composition were detected. Along the water area of river decrease of O2 concentrations (up to 0.3 mg O2/l) and increase of Сorg (up to 131 mg/l), SO42– (up to 262 mg/l), K+ (up to 10.6 mg/l), Cl– (up to 220 mg/l), Na+ (up to 240 mg/l), Mn (up to 248.5 mg/l), Cr (up to 7.4 mg/l), to a lesser extent Al (up to 224.1 mg/l), Co (up to 0.26 mg/l), Cu (up to 5.4 mg/l), Zn (up to 43.2 mg/l), Cd (up to 0.126 mg/l), Pb (up to 0.40 mg/l), Hg (up to 0.0032 mg/l) are observed. In surface waters of the Ust-Vikhorevsky bay concentrations of most components of the main ionic composition and trace elements decrease, as compared to the Vikhoreva river water. Maximum concentrations of Mn (511.5 mg/l), Fe (1567.2 mg/l), Co (0.80 mg/l), Pb (0.77 mg/l) were detected in bottom waters. The main ionic composition and trace element concentrations in the Vihoreva river water are determined primarily by anthropogenic factor. At the same time, the hydrochemical regime of the river is effected by natural factors. Inflow of both waters of the highly polluted and forming waters of the channel part of the Ust-Ilimsk reservoir impacts the hydrochemistry of the Ust-Vikhorevsky bay.

In recent years, research has demonstrated that ultra-processed foods are highly addictive. However, there has been limited discussion on the clinical syndrome of food addiction, and how exposure to addictive foods can result in a chronic progressive syndrome, which can be further understood in five distinct stages. Understanding these stages sheds light on why diagnosis and successful treatment may vary among individuals and why a one-size-fits-all approach is ineffective.

Neuroparasitism concerns the hostile take-over of a host's nervous system by a foreign invader, in order to alter the behaviour of the host in favour of the parasite. One of the most remarkable cases of parasite-induced host behavioural manipulation comprises the changes baculoviruses induce in their caterpillar hosts. Baculoviruses may manipulate caterpillar behaviour in two ways: hyperactivity (increased movement in the horizontal plane) and/or tree-top disease (movement to elevated levels in the vertical plane). Those behavioural changes are followed by liquefaction and death of the caterpillar. In Autographa californica multiple nucleopolyhedrovirus (AcMNPV)-infected Spodoptera exigua caterpillars, an enzymatic active form of the virally encoded protein tyrosine phosphatase (PTP) is needed for the expression of hyperactivity from 3 days post infection (dpi). Using eGFP-expressing recombinant AcMNPV strains, we show that infection of the caterpillar's central nervous system (CNS) can be observed primarily from 3 dpi onwards. In addition, we demonstrate that the structural and enzymatic function of PTP does not play a role in infection of the CNS. Instead we show that the virus entered the CNS via the trachea, progressing caudally to frontally through the CNS and that the infection progressed from the outermost cell layers towards the inner cell layers of the CNS, in a PTP independent manner. These findings help to further understand parasitic manipulation and the mechanisms by which neuroparasites infect the host nervous system to manipulate host behaviour.

INTRODUCTION. Urinary incontinence in children is an interdisciplinary problem. The prevalence of urinary incontinence ranges from3.1% to 8.6% and decreases with age. Urinary incontinence can be caused by both organic (diseases of the genitourinary system,neurological pathology) and functional causes. One of the methods of non-drug correction of urinary incontinence is extracorporealmagnetic stimulation, used in adult patients. At the same time, the effectiveness of the method among the pediatric population hasnot been sufficiently studied. AIM. To study the effectiveness and safety of extracorporeal magnetic stimulation in the comprehensive rehabilitation of children withneurogenic urinary incontinence. MATERIAL AND METHODS. A prospective open randomized controlled clinical study included 75 pediatric patients (from 5 years to 16years and 6 months) with a clinical form of day and night urinary incontinence, who were divided by simple randomization into a maingroup (n=39), who received a standard rehabilitation and extracorporeal magnetic stimulation program for 21 days, and a comparisongroup (n=36), in which the standard rehabilitation program did not include the use of extracorporeal magnetic stimulation. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION. A prospective open randomized comparative study revealed that the clinical effectiveness of theextracorporeal magnetic stimulation method in the comprehensive rehabilitation of children with neurogenic urinary incontinenceis 94.8%, which is 25.4% higher than in the comparison group. After treatment, patients in the main group had a noticeable decreasein urinary incontinence episodes, an increase in the micturition volume, and an improvement in the quality of life. Patients withvarious background neurological pathology responded to treatment, which indicates the common pathogenetic mechanisms of thedevelopment of lower urinary tract symptoms in these conditions and the independence of the final effect from the basic diagnosis. CONCLUSION. The use of the perineal extracorporeal magnetic stimulation method in children with neurogenic urinary incontinenceincreases the effectiveness of rehabilitation and is a promising and safe direction of rehabilitation treatment.

Fresh fermented milk products have a limited shelf life that can be extended by vacuum freeze-drying. Cryoprotectants are used to increase the survival of lactic acid microorganisms during freeze-drying. The most effective cryoprotectants are those of natural origin. Literature offers little information on the cryoprotective effects of fruit and vegetable purees. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of fruit and vegetable purees in increasing the survival of lactic acid microorganisms during the freeze-drying and storage of fermented milk products. We studied bioyogurt samples containing pumpkin, fig, and banana purees. Rational modes of freezing and freeze-drying were established on the basis of thermal analysis. The cryoscopic temperature was determined by differential scanning calorimetry. The proportion of frozen moisture was calculated using the Nagaoka formula. Standard methods were employed to evaluate the sensory characteristics of bioyogurts and determine their protein, fat, and non-fat milk solids contents, as well as titratable acidity and microbiological indicators. The addition of pumpkin puree increased the cryoscopic temperature and reduced the freeze-drying stage and the total drying time by 13 h, depending on the amount of puree. However, the addition of sweet fig and banana purees decreased the cryoscopic temperature and increased the freeze-drying stage and the total drying time by 0.5–1.5 and 1.5–3 h, respectively. Based on the sensory evaluation of the freeze-dried bioyogurts, we selected the formulations with 15% of pumpkin and fig purees and 10% of banana puree. We found that the freeze-dried bioyogurts with puree had higher counts of lactic acid bacteria compared to the control. In the freeze-dried samples, the counts were higher at a storage temperature of 4 ± 2°C than at 20 ± 2°C. Pumpkin puree provided the best survival of lactic acid microorganisms during freeze-drying and storage.

Hereditary ichthyosis is a group of generalized hereditary keratinization disorders characterized by general dryness of the skin, peeling, hyperkeratosis and often erythroderma. These manifestations are caused by mutations in genes mainly involved in the formation of the skin barrier. Hereditary ichthyosis is divided into syndromic and non-syndromic. Nonsyndromic ichthyoses include: vulgar ichthyosis, recessive X-linked ichthyosis, autosomal recessive congenital ichthyosis, keratinopathic ichthyosis and other forms. At present, the best result for achieving clinical remission has been established with oral retinoids: retinol palmitate, isotretinoin (1st generation of retinoids) and acitretin (2nd generation of retinoids). The ability of retinol palmitate to regulate keratinization processes, strengthen the epidermal barrier and have an antioxidant effect is used in the treatment of generalized hereditary keratinization disorders. Medium and high therapeutic doses (200010 000 IU/kg/day) are used in the treatment. The prescribed dose of retinol palmitate differs in various nosological forms of ichthyosis, and depends on the severity of the pathological process, the age and weight of the patient, which must be taken into account when prescribing therapy to obtain the best result. It should be noted that clinical manifestations mainly regress at doses that do not lead to the appearance of signs of toxicity of the drug. The methods of retinol palmitate treatment of ichthyosis and ichthyosiform erythroderma are described.

Based on the up-to-date knowledge we critically discuss the current understanding of the influence of the compounds secreted by phytoplankton species on the fate of metal-containing engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) in aquatic settings. Different biomolecules, such as extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and exometabolites play important, yet to elucidate, role in the dissolution, colloidal stability, transformations and biouptake of the ENPs and thus shape their behavior within the phycosphere. Phytoplankton secretions can also mediate the synthesis of ENPs from dissolved ions by reducing the metals ions and capping the newly formed ENPs. However, the environmental significance of this process remains to be demonstrated. Exposure to ENPs triggers changes in the secretion of the biomolecules. An improved understanding of the regulatory mechanism and exometabolite changes due to ENP exposure is essential for deciphering the ENPs-phytoplankton interactions. Unveiling the significance of secreted biomolecules in modulating the behavior of the metal-containing ENPs is central for understudying the phytoplankton-ENPs feedbacks, drivers of transformations of ENPs and their mechanisms in the aquatic environment.

Vitamin A and its synthetic analogues are used in the treatment of numerous skin diseases. The main genomic effects of the natural form of vitamin A (retinol palmitate) are associated with its active metabolite all-trans-retinoic acid and are compensated by several restrictive mechanisms. Numerous studies have proved that retinol stimulates the proliferation of keratinocytes of the basal layer of the epidermis and endothelial cells, and also activates dermal fibroblasts to synthesize proteins of the extracellular matrix of the dermis. As a result, the thickening the epidermis, increases the mechanical strength of the skin and the hydrating ability of the dermis, angiogenesis increase. The ability of retinol to enhance the adhesion of endothelial cells and leukocytes, regulate the processes of keratinization and sebum secretion was found. Vitamin A is also a powerful antioxidant. Retinol palmitate is used as the main or auxiliary drug for the treatment of a wide range of dermatoses. The principle of application is based on clinical studies and confirmed by existing experimental data. In the treatment, the following algorithm is followed. If retinol palmitate is necessary to improve epithelialization and strengthen the epidermal barrier, medium therapeutic doses should be used. For the treatment of disorders of keratinization processes, depending on the severity of the pathological condition, medium and high therapeutic doses of the drug are used. Violation of the processes of sebum secretion and severe hyperkeratosis respond better to treatment at high therapeutic doses. It should be noted that many skins clinical manifestations mostly regress under the action of vitamin A in doses that do not lead to the appearance of signs of toxicity of the drug.

Axiological categories and the concepts they consist of have always been a major area of interest in science. The development of cognitive linguistics has opened new perspectives for the study of axiological events, categories and concepts within them. This article explores the structure of the axiological binary opposition truth-lie, based on the material of the English language. In English, the verbalised concept truth encodes information about both objective truth as well as its subjective perception and re-translation. A combination of methods — definitional, frame and conceptual analyses — makes it possible to investigate and model the structure of the frames TRUTH and LIE, identify their main slots and the type of conceptual information they encode. The results of the analyses suggest that the two frames have the same structure and the same number and type of slots. However, the conceptual content of the slots is different. From the conceptual point of view, the axiological binary opposition truth — lie is a continuum having an intermediate blend zone “neither truth nor lie”, incorporating the axiological paradoxes, which form the conceptual basis of manipulation.

Russia has historically been a favored destination for international students, a trend continuing through 2020–2022 despite pandemic challenges, quarantine measures, remote learning adaptations, and evolving geopolitical dynamics. The pandemic prompted significant digital transformations in universities, revealing varying digital readiness among Russian institutions for the abrupt shift to online education. This led to the emergence of a novel “digital didactics” methodology. Russian universities adopted digitalization not only for education but also for supporting digital students’ sociopsychological adaptation and devising recruitment strategies via social networks. In these circumstances, digital inequality emerged as a critical concern. This issue is not only evident at a global level but also across various stages of foreign students’ education, spanning from virtual admissions to final certification. This study analyzes the global experiences and recommendations for crafting an optimal model for online educational engagement with foreign students and categorizes Russian universities based on their digital readiness for education export and identifies challenges in engaging foreign students and attracting applicants.

Abstract Background Granulovacuolar degeneration bodies (GVBs) are intracellular vesicular structures that commonly accompany pathological tau accumulations in neurons of patients with tauopathies. Recently, we developed the first model for GVBs in primary neurons, that requires exogenous tau seeds to elicit tau aggregation. This model allowed the identification of GVBs as proteolytically active lysosomes induced by tau pathology. GVBs selectively accumulate cargo in a dense core, that shows differential and inconsistent immunopositivity for (phosphorylated) tau epitopes. Despite the strong evidence connecting GVBs to tau pathology, these structures have been reported in neurons without apparent pathology in brain tissue of tauopathy patients. Additionally, GVBs and putative GVBs have also been reported in the brain of patients with non-tau proteinopathies. Here, we investigated the connection between pathological protein assemblies and GVBs in more detail. Methods This study combined newly developed primary neuron models for tau and α-synuclein pathology with observations in human brain tissue from tauopathy and Parkinson’s disease patients. Immunolabeling and imaging techniques were employed for extensive characterisation of pathological proteins and GVBs. Quantitative data were obtained by high-content automated microscopy as well as single-cell analysis of confocal images. Results Employing a novel seed-independent neuronal tau/GVB model, we show that in the context of tauopathy, GVBs are inseparably associated with the presence of cytosolic pathological tau and that intracellular tau aggregation precedes GVB formation, strengthening the causal relationship between pathological accumulation of tau and GVBs. We also report that GVBs are inseparably associated with pathological tau at the single-cell level in the hippocampus of tauopathy patients. Paradoxically, we demonstrate the presence of GVBs in the substantia nigra of Parkinson’s disease patients and in a primary neuron model for α-synuclein pathology. GVBs in this newly developed α-synuclein/GVB model are induced in the absence of cytosolic pathological tau accumulations. GVBs in the context of tau or α-synuclein pathology showed similar immunoreactivity for different phosphorylated tau epitopes. The phosphorylated tau immunoreactivity signature of GVBs is therefore independent of the presence of cytosolic tau pathology. Conclusion Our data identify the emergence of GVBs as a more generalised response to cytosolic protein pathology.

The relevance of the research is caused by the necessity of controlling hydrochemical parameters of large freshwater ecosystem for the objective estimation of waterbody transformation under the anthropogenic impact. The main aim of the research is to examine the spatial and temporal variability in major ion concentrations in Angara River water before regulating its flow by the Boguchany hydropower plants dam, as well as in Boguchany reservoir water during filling and water level stabilization. Objects of the research are the Angara River before regulating its flow by the Boguchany HPP dam (2007), and Boguchany reservoir during filling (2013, 2014) and water level stabilization (2015, 2017). Methods. Chemical analyses in the water samples were determined in the Centre for Collective Use «Isotope-Geochemical Research» of the IGC SB RAS (Irkutsk, Russia). Flame emission spectrophotometry was used in the analysis of Na+ and K+, atomic absorption spectrometry was applied to analyse Ca2+ and Mg2+, the turbidimetric method was used to measure SO42–, the titrimetric method was employed in the analysis of HCO3– and the mercurimetric method was applied to study Cl–. Results. The spatial and temporal variability in the concentrations of cations (Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, and K+) and anions (HCO3–, SO42–, and Cl–) was examined. The results of the study show that the increase in the water level led to changes in the major ion concentration ratio. In comparison with the Angara River, in the Boguchany reservoir operation, SO42–, Cl–, Na+, and Mg2+ concentrations increased, while HCO3– and Ca2+ concentrations decreased in the initial period of reservoir operation. The ionic composition of water in the Boguchany reservoir resulted primarily from the contribution from the area located upstream (runoff from the Ust-Ilimsk reservoir). Anthropogenic factors include wastewater and reservoir creation, which affect the hydrochemistry of major ions.

The review summarizes information about the main causes and pathogenesis of xerosis cutis as one of the conditions indicating a violation of the epidermal barrier. Xerosis cutis is a clinical sign of a decrease in the amount and/or quality of lipids and/or hydrophilic substances in the stratum corneum of the epidermis. The modern approach to the treatment of dermatoses accompanied by violations of the epidermal barrier includes basic moisturizers. Urea not only moisturizes the skin. It is involved in the regulation of barrier function and antimicrobial protection. It is a low-molecular regulator of protein synthesis in keratinocytes, such as filaggrin, loricrin, involucrin and transglutaminase 1, cathelicidin, beta-defensin-2, water and urea carrier proteins into the cell, as well as proteins that promote the synthesis of intercellular matrix lipids. The main dermatotropic pharmacological effects of urea (hydration of the epidermis, strengthening of the barrier function of the skin, keratolytic effect, increased penetration of drugs into the skin) have been used in dermatological practice for many years. External agents with urea are used to treat skin diseases accompanied by dryness and excessive keratinization, to correct the deformation of nail plates of various genesis, to facilitate the local penetration of medicines. The use of topical UrocrEM5, UrocrEM10, Uroderm ointments containing 5%, 10% and 30% urea, respectively, is effective and safe.

The Irkutsk Reservoir, belonging to the largest unified freshwater Baikal–Angara system, is an important source of drinking water in the region. Therefore, studies of its hydrochemical characteristics are of prime importance in deciding on the role of anthropogenic activity in water quality. The water samples were collected across the reservoir in 2007, 2012, and 2021 and then were analyzed for major ions and trace elements. The data revealed that the distribution of HCO3−, SO42−, Cl−, Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+ and K+ is stable across the reservoir. Trace element concentrations varied from 1.13 to 15.39 µg L−1 for Al, from −1 for Cr, from 0.39 to 23.12 µg L−1 for Mn, from 1.25 to 53.22 µg L−1 for Fe, from 0.005 to 0.100 µg L−1 for Co, from 0.20 to 1.98 µg L−1 for Cu, from −1 for Zn, from 0.25 to 0.48 µg L−1 for As, from 0.004 to 0.127 µg L−1 for Cd, from −1 for Sn, from −1 for Cs, from −1 for Pb, from −1 for Th, and from 0.27 to 0.75 µg L−1 for U. The concentrations of all major ions and trace elements in water were below the drinking water standards. CF values showed considerable and high contamination of samples with Al, Mn, Fe, Co, Cu, Cd, Sn, Pb, and Th. PLI values classified the majority of water samples as water with baseline levels of pollutants, and part of the samples was classified as either polluted or highly polluted.

Bacteriophages harm food production, disrupt fermenting, spoil dairy products, and cause financial loss. The article describes the biodiversity and properties of bacteriophages capable of lysing lactic acid bacteria used in fermented dairy and meat products. The research featured bacteriophages obtained from fermented meat and dairy products. The methods included microbiological analyses, sensory evaluation, physico-chemical tests, genetic studies, electron microscopy, optical reassociation, and mathematical data processing. Violation of the fermentation process always resulted in bacteriophages in the finished products, e.g., fermented dairy products, curd whey, raw smoked and dry-cured sausages, etc. The list of bacteriophages of lactic acid bacteria included 20 bacteriophages of Lactococcus ssp., 11 – of Streptococcus salivarius subsp. thermophilus, and 5 – of Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus. The study revealed the diversity of the isolated bacteriophages, their molecular and biological profile, the titer and range of their new hosts, and the differences from standard ones. The bacteriophages proved to be able to infect a wider range of lactic acid bacteria. The article describes the change in the biodiversity and evolution of bacteriophages depending on their lytic action and virulence. The improved collection of bacteriophages and their detection cultures contribute to an earlier and more effective identification of bacteriophages in fermented products.

For the first time, based on the joint application of the fine-porous and cell models, a theoretical analysis of the changing transport and structural characteristics of heterogeneous polymeric ion-exchange membranes (IEMs) MK-40, MA-40, and MA-41 after exposure to elevated temperatures in water and aggressive media (H2SO4 and NaOH solutions), as well as after long-term processing in electrodialyzers of various types, was carried out. The studied membranes are composites of ion-exchange polymers with polyethylene and nylon reinforcing mesh. The external influences provoke the aging of IEMs and the deterioration of their characteristics. The transport properties of IEMs are quantitatively described using five physicochemical parameters: counterion diffusion and equilibrium distribution coefficients in the membrane, characteristic exchange capacity, which depends on the microporosity of ion-exchanger particles, and macroscopic porosity at a known exchange capacity of IEMs. Calculations of the physicochemical parameters of the membranes were performed according to a specially developed fitting technique using the experimental concentration dependences of integral diffusion permeability and specific electrical conductivity, and their model analogs. This made it possible to identify and evaluate changes in the membrane micro- and macrostructure and examine the process of artificial aging of the IEM polymer material due to the abovementioned external impacts.

One of the ways to obtain membranes with electroconvection as the dominant mechanism of ion transport is to optimise the surface of known brands of commercial heterogeneous membranes by changing their manufacturing technology. For example, the degree of dispersion of the ion-exchanger or the volume ratio of the ion-exchanger to inert binder can be changed. The aim of this study was to determine and theoretically analyse the fundamental correlations between the intensity of electroconvection and the surface morphology of ion-exchange membranes with different ion-exchanger particle content. Тhe article presents a mathematical model of ion transport across the ion-exchange membrane/solution interface in the channel of an electrodialysis cell. The phenomenon of electroconvection in electromembrane systems (EMS) was modelled by solving two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations for an incompressible liquid with no-slip boundary conditions and a set distribution of the electric body force. The body force distribution was set taking into account the real size of ionexchanger particles and the distance between them that determine the electrical heterogeneity of the surface of experimental ion-exchange membranes with different mass fractions of ion-exchange resin. It was determined that in the numerical modelling, the most important parameters were the size of the sections of electrical heterogeneity of the membrane surface, the current density, and the length of the space charge region (SCR). Numerical calculations were presented to determine the vortex size depending on the current density and the degree of electrical heterogeneity of the membrane surface. It was shown that an increase in the mass fraction of ion-exchange resin in the production of heterogeneous sulphocationexchange membranes resulted in a decrease in the step of electrical surface heterogeneity and promoted the formation of electroconvective vortices interacting with each other. Within the boundary conditions and approximations of the mathematical model, the vortex sizes reach their maximum value in the middle of the heterogeneity section L0.

Skin aging is a complex process involving both internal (chronological aging) and external (biological aging) factors. Slowing down the proliferative and immune processes in the epidermis, reducing the activity of fibroblasts and vascularization of the dermis during chronological aging lead to thinning, dryness, hypersensitivity, vulnerability and superficial wrinkles. Exposure to ultraviolet rays, pollutants, climate, and thermal factors cause keratinocyte disorganization, enhanced melanogenesis, collagen dystrophy, solar elastosis, and disorder of microcirculation. The main signs of external skin aging are deep wrinkles, sagging, pigmentation, telangiectasia, skin neoplasms. Among the local anti-aging agents, retinoids occupy a leading place, as they eliminate the main signs of skin aging. Of the entire group of retinoids, retinoic acids are the most active. However, the possibility of skin irritation limits their use. Therapeutic and cosmetic products with retinol esters (retinol palmitate) have a minimal irritating effect and can be used both for the prevention of skin aging and the elimination of its signs. Oral use of isotretinoin as an anti-aging agent is undesirable due to the many side effects and contraindications.

The increased use of nanoparticle (NP)-enabled materials in everyday-life products have raised concerns about their environmental implications and safety. This motivated the extensive research in nanoecotoxicology showing the possibility that NPs could cause harm to the aquatic organisms if present at high concentrations. By contrast, studies dealing with influence that organisms could exert on the fate and thus effects of NPs are still very rare. Drawing on the existing up-to-date knowledge we critically discuss the formation of biomolecular corona as one of the mechanisms by which organisms exerted control on the NPs fate in the aquatic and biotic environments. We focused the formation of corona by exogeneous and endogenous biomolecules and illustrated the discussion with the specific example of phytoplankton and aquatic invertebrate species. We highlighted the necessity to incorporate the concept of biomolecular corona within more general framework considering the feedback of aquatic organisms and the control they exert in shaping the fate and impact of NPs in the aquatic and biological environment. In our view such broader perspective will contribute to get novel insights into the drivers of environmental transformations of NPs and their mechanisms, which are important in environmental risk assessment.

The activation of c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) plays an important role in stroke outcomes. Tryptanthrin-6-oxime (TRYP-Ox) is reported to have high affinity for JNK and anti-inflammatory activity and may be of interest as a promising neuroprotective agent. The aim of this study was to investigate the neuroprotective effects of TRYP-Ox in a rat model of transient focal cerebral ischemia (FCI), which involved intraluminal occlusion of the left middle cerebral artery (MCA) for 1 h. Animals in the experimental group were administered intraperitoneal injections of TRYP-Ox 30 min before reperfusion and 23 and 47 h after FCI. Neurological status was assessed 4, 24, and 48 h following FCI onset. Treatment with 5 and 10 mg/kg of TRYP-Ox decreased mean scores of neurological deficits by 35–49 and 46–67% at 24 and 48 h, respectively. At these doses, TRYP-Ox decreased the infarction size by 28–31% at 48 h after FCI. TRYP-Ox (10 mg/kg) reduced the content of interleukin (IL) 1β and tumor necrosis factor (TNF) in the ischemic core area of the MCA region by 33% and 38%, respectively, and attenuated cerebral edema by 11% in the left hemisphere, which was affected by infarction, and by 6% in the right, contralateral hemisphere 24 h after FCI. TRYP-Ox reduced c-Jun phosphorylation in the MCA pool at 1 h after reperfusion. TRYP-Ox was predicted to have high blood–brain barrier permeability using various calculated descriptors and binary classification trees. Indeed, reactive oxidant production was significantly lower in the brain homogenates from rats treated with TRYP-Ox versus that in control animals. Our data suggest that the neuroprotective activity of TRYP-Ox may be due to the ability of this compound to inhibit JNK and exhibit anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity. Thus, TRYP-Ox may be considered a promising neuroprotective agent that potentially could be used for the development of new treatment strategies in cerebral ischemia.

The house cricket, Acheta domesticus, is a commonly reared insect for food and feed purposes. In 1977, a report described a colony collapse, which was caused by the single-stranded DNA virus Acheta domesticus densovirus (AdDV). Currently, there are no confirmed A. domesticus colonies free of AdDV, and viral disease outbreaks are a continuous threat to A. domesticus mass rearing. Correlations between cricket rearing density or temperature and AdDV abundance have been hypothesized, but experimental evidence is lacking. Optimised rearing conditions, including temperature and density, are key to cost-effective cricket production. In this study, house crickets were subjected to different combinations of rearing density (10, 20, 40 crickets per box) and temperature (25, 30, 35 °C) to study the effect on cricket survival, biomass, and AdDV abundance. Rearing temperature affected had a minor effect on survival, which ranged between 80 and 83%. Total cricket biomass increased with higher temperatures and higher densities. Viral abundance in crickets at the end of the rearing period was variable; however, high rearing density seemed to result in higher AdDV abundance. At 35 °C, a temperature considered suboptimal for house cricket production, viral abundance tended to be lower than at 25 or 30 °C.

It is well known that plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPRs) increase the tolerance of plants to abiotic stresses; however, the counteraction of Al toxicity has received little attention. The effects of specially selected Al-tolerant and Al-immobilizing microorganisms were investigated using pea cultivar Sparkle and its Al-sensitive mutant E107 (brz). The strain Cupriavidus sp. D39 was the most-efficient in the growth promotion of hydroponically grown peas treated with 80 µM AlCl3, increasing the plant biomass of Sparkle by 20% and of E107 (brz) by two-times. This strain immobilized Al in the nutrient solution and decreased its concentration in E107 (brz) roots. The mutant showed upregulated exudation of organic acids, amino acids, and sugars in the absence or presence of Al as compared with Sparkle, and in most cases, the Al treatment stimulated exudation. Bacteria utilized root exudates and more actively colonized the root surface of E107 (brz). The exudation of tryptophan and the production of IAA by Cupriavidus sp. D39 in the root zone of the Al-treated mutant were observed. Aluminum disturbed the concentrations of nutrients in plants, but inoculation with Cupriavidus sp. D39 partially restored such negative effects. Thus, the E107 (brz) mutant is a useful tool for studying the mechanisms of plant–microbe interactions, and PGPR plays an important role in protecting plants against Al toxicity.

Cardiac myxoma is the most common primary benign cardiac tumor (up to 50% of all primary cardiac neoplasms). The implementation of the modern imaging techniques into the clinical practice, particularly, 2D echocardiography, computed tomography and magnetic resonance tomography (MRI) results to the prompt diagnosis of the myxoma. However, the absence of specific clinical features, insufficient awareness of this condition among the physicians along with a rare prevalence, may lead to a misdiagnosis. This case report is notable for the relatively late diagnosis of a giant left atrial myxoma due to a number of circumstances but with successful surgical treatment.

Based on long-term (> 25 years) data analysis, the species diversity of lichens of the largest (4683 km2) Protected Area in Northwest Russia, the National Park «Vodlozersky», is presented for the first time. The National Park «Vodlozersky» was established in 1991 to preserve unique natural communities in the basin of Lake Vodlozero and the River Ileksa. The territory of the Protected Area is located along the eastern borders of the Fennoscandian Shield in two administrative regions: the Republic of Karelia and the Arkhangelsk region. This study is the first attempt to generalise all available data on the lichen flora of NP «Vodlozersky». The paper summarises the information from literature and the authors' data on lichen species diversity obtained in 19 expeditions to different parts of the National Park «Vodlozersky» over a 30-year period of study. Field material was collected by combination of floristic (route methods) and geobotanical studies – by the methods of establishing and description of sample plots ranging in size from 400 to 10 000 m2. For a detailed study of the species composition of lichens in the sample plots, all types of substrates were examined: the trunks and branch surface of different tree species under various conditions (living, falling, dead wood), as well as rotting wood, soil and stones. The collection of lichens (565 herbarium specimens) from the National Park «Vodlozersky» deposited in the herbarium of the Helsinki University (H) (H) were revised. A brief history of the lichen study in the Protected Area was described and the dynamics of the accumulation of information on the species diversity of lichens and allied fungi was revealed by years, from 170 species in 1991 to 469 species and 4 subspecies in 2020. The recent studies resulted in a list of 30 new findings, including 13 species for the Karelian part, and 17 for the whole area of the National Park «Vodlozersky». A total of 473 taxa are reported for the National Park «Vodlozersky», including 445 species and 4 subspecies of lichens, 11 species of non-lichenised fungi and 13 species of lichenicolous fungi. The distribution of lichen species number between the two parts of the Protected Area belonging to different regions of the Russian Federation is as follows: 327 are registered on the Karelian territory of the National Park «Vodlozersky», 402 species on the Arkhangelsk part; the number of common species is 259. Among the recorded lichens in the National Park «Vodlozersky» 18 species are listed in the Red Data Book of the Republic of Karelia and 16 species are in the Red Data Book of the Arkhangelsk Region. The obtained data indicate the high potential of the Protected Area in preserving and maintaining the general diversity of lichen species. The number of species found in the Arkhangelsk part of the National Park «Vodlozersky» is 64% of the currently known lichen diversity for the mainland of the Arkhangelsk region. In the Karelian part there are 25% species of lichens known for the Republic of Karelia. The authors emphasise the publication scarcity of accumulated material on the lichen flora of National Park «Vodlozersky», which makes the study relevant.

Introduction. The Russian Arctic, also called the Far North, attracts a lot of people who work on a fly-in fly-out basis. These temporary residents experience the negative impact of the harsh climate and suffer from unvaried diets and poor ration. Freeze-dried products might be the optimal solution to this problem. The research objective was to find a rationale for the use of freeze-dried long-storage products in the diets of temporary residents in regions with harsh climatic conditions. Study objects and methods. The research featured scientific publications on two topics: 1) nutrition and diet of shift workers in the Far North, 2) development of freeze-dried products for long-term storage in extreme conditions. Results and discussion. Shift workers consume a lot of fats and carbohydrates, while their diet lacks complete proteins, vitamins, minerals, dairy products, and fresh fruits and vegetables. Taking into consideration the high content of sugar and confectionery, the diet ruins the health of the temporary residents and causes alimentary chronic non-infectious diseases. A healthy diet for the Russian Arctic should correspond to the metabolic profile typical of people in chronic environment stress and be complete both quantitatively and qualitatively. Important food products are difficult to deliver to the Far North. As a result, they are microbiologically and chemically contaminated. Therefore, the region needs high-quality functional products with prolonged shelf life. Conclusion. Freeze-dried fermented milk products, fruits, and vegetables can help temporary residents of the Far North to maintain their usual food patterns. Freeze-dried foods have a long shelf life in unregulated temperature conditions, which can solve the issue of food supply even to the most remote settlements.

Activation of c-Jun N-terminal kinases (JNKs) is involved in myocardial injury, left ventricular remodeling (LV), and heart failure (HF) after myocardial infarction (MI). The aim of this research was to evaluate the effects of a selective JNK inhibitor, 11H-indeno [1,2-b]quinoxalin-11-one oxime (IQ-1), on myocardial injury and acute myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) in adult male Wistar rats. Intraperitoneal administration of IQ-1 (25 mg/kg daily for 5 days) resulted in a significant decrease in myocardial infarct size on day 5 after MI. On day 60 after MI, a significant (2.6-fold) decrease in LV scar size, a 2.2-fold decrease in the size of the LV cavity, a 2.9-fold decrease in the area of mature connective tissue, and a 1.7-fold decrease in connective tissue in the interventricular septum were observed compared with the control group. The improved contractile function of the heart resulted in a significant (33%) increase in stroke size, a 40% increase in cardiac output, a 12% increase in LV systolic pressure, a 28% increase in the LV maximum rate of pressure rise, a 45% increase in the LV maximum rate of pressure drop, a 29% increase in the contractility index, a 14% increase in aortic pressure, a 2.7-fold decrease in LV end-diastolic pressure, and a 4.2-fold decrease in LV minimum pressure. We conclude that IQ-1 has cardioprotective activity and reduces the severity of HF after MI.

The problem of training students of higher educational institutions who are able to use effectively mathematical methods in their professional activities is now more relevant than ever. According to the Federal State Educational Standards of Higher Education, one of the characteristics of qualified graduates is their ability to competently solve professional problems in accordance with the major and level of training, which suggests a qualitative change in the arrangement of training in all its types and forms, including in the conditions of electronic educational environment (EEE). Based on the above mentioned, the aim of the study is to describe and justify the mechanism which comprehensively examines and evaluates the effectiveness of mathematical training of students within EEE. The development of an approach to the algorithm for evaluating the effectiveness of mathematical training was carried out using methods of mathematical statistics and integrated data analysis. To implement a comprehensive examination and evaluation of the effectiveness of mathematical training of students in the conditions of electronic educational environment of higher educational institutions, the authors developed a diagnostic toolkit which is a software product based on the method of hierarchy analysis involving groups of criteria and indicators (regulatory and organizational, psychological and pedagogical, software and hardware, communication and personnel). The results of the study can be used in the development of electronic didactic materials to examine the quality of the learning process within EEE.

The appearance of skin changes during pregnancy is inevitable and physiologically determined. This period is characterized by hormonal, immunological and metabolic changes and associated physiological changes in the skin. These include pigmentation (linea nigra, melasma, pseudoacanthosis, growth and appearance of pigmented nevi), changes in connective tissue (striae distensae, skin tags), blood vessels (stellate hemangiomas, erythema of the palms, vasodilatation, edema, cutis marmorata) and skin appendages (increased sebaceous and eccrine glands activity, reduced hair loss and increased hair density, onychodystrophy). It is important to inform women about possible changes, to recognize them in time to reduce the impact of their appearance on the health and course of pregnancy, as well as to avoid unnecessary tests and interventions.

Abstract Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are one of the most used engineered nanomaterials. Despite progress in assessing their environmental implications, knowledge gaps exist concerning the metabolic perturbations induced by AgNPs on phytoplankton, essential organisms in global biogeochemical cycles and food-web dynamics. We combine targeted metabolomics, biouptake and physiological response studies to elucidate metabolic perturbations in alga Poterioochromonas malhamensis induced by AgNPs and dissolved Ag. We show time-dependent perturbation of the metabolism of amino acids, nucleotides, fatty acids, tricarboxylic acids, photosynthesis and photorespiration by both Ag-treatments. The results suggest that dissolved Ag ions released by AgNPs are the major toxicity driver; however, AgNPs internalized in food vacuoles contributed to the perturbation of amino acid metabolism, TCA cycle and oxidative stress. The metabolic perturbations corroborate the observed physiological responses. We highlight the potential of metabolomics as a tool for understanding the molecular basis for these metabolic and physiological changes, and for early detection of stress.

Intra-peritoneal placement of alginate encapsulated human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived hepatocytes (hPSC-Heps) represents a potential new bridging therapy for acute liver failure. One of the rate-limiting steps that needs to be overcome to make such a procedure more efficacious and safer is to reduce the accumulation of fibrotic tissue around the encapsulated cells to allow the free passage of relevant molecules in and out for metabolism. Novel chemical compositions of alginate afford the possibility of achieving this aim. We accordingly used sulfated alginate and demonstrated that this material reduced fibrotic overgrowth whilst not impeding the process of encapsulation nor cell function. Cumulatively, this suggests sulfated alginate could be a more suitable material to encapsulate hPSC-hepatocyte prior to human use.

Asymmetrical flow field-flow fractionation (AF4) efficiently separates various macromolecules and nano-components of natural waters according to their hydrodynamic sizes. The online coupling of AF4 with fluorescence (Fluo) and UV absorbance (UV) detectors (FluoD and UVD, respectively) and inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) provides multidimensional information. This makes it a powerful tool to characterize and quantify the size distributions of organic and inorganic nano-sized components and their interaction with trace metals. In this study, we developed a method combining thiol labeling by monobromo(trimethylammonio)bimane bromide (qBBr) with AF4–FluoD to determine the size distribution and the quantities of thiols in the macromolecular dissolved organic matter (DOM) present in highly colored DOM-rich water sampled from Shuya River and Lake Onego, Russia.
