Abstract

In this paper, we launch a new Universal Dependencies treebank for an endangered language from Amazonia: Kakataibo, a Panoan language spoken in Peru. We first discuss the collaborative methodology implemented, which proved effective to create a treebank in the context of a Computational Linguistic course for undergraduates. Then, we describe the general details of the treebank and the language-specific considerations implemented for the proposed annotation. We finally conduct some experiments on part-of-speech tagging and syntactic dependency parsing. We focus on monolingual and transfer learning settings, where we study the impact of a Shipibo-Konibo treebank, another Panoan language resource., Comment: Accepted to LREC 2022

5. Phase transitions in a decentralized graph-based approach to human language

Abstract

Zipf's law establishes a scaling behavior for word-frequencies in large text corpora. The appearance of Zipfian properties in human language has been previously explained as an optimization problem for the interests of speakers and hearers. On the other hand, human-like vocabularies can be viewed as bipartite graphs. The aim here is double: within a bipartite-graph approach to human vocabularies, to propose a decentralized language game model for the formation of Zipfian properties. To do this, we define a language game, in which a population of artificial agents is involved in idealized linguistic interactions. Numerical simulations show the appearance of a phase transition from an initially disordered state to three possible phases for language formation. Our results suggest that Zipfian properties in language seem to arise partly from decentralized linguistic interactions between agents endowed with bipartite word-meaning mappings.

8. A decentralized route to the origins of scaling in human language

Abstract

The Zipf's law establishes that if the words of a (large) text are ordered by decreasing frequency, the frequency versus the rank decreases as a power law with exponent close to $-1$. Previous work has stressed that this pattern arises from a conflict of interests of the participants of communication. The challenge here is to define a computational multi-agent language game, mainly based on a parameter that measures the relative participant's interests. Numerical simulations suggest that at critical values of the parameter a human-like vocabulary, exhibiting scaling properties, seems to appear. The appearance of an intermediate distribution of frequencies at some critical values of the parameter suggests that on a population of artificial agents the emergence of scaling partly arises as a self-organized process only from local interactions between agents.

Abstract

This research focuses on the analysis of onomasiological variation in Old English texts written by AElfric; more specifically, I am interested in the study of the different motifs that shape the linguistic expressions of shame and guilt used by this Anglo-Saxon monk across different textual genres. Through the fine-grained analysis of the whole set of shame and guilt expressions recorded in the entire corpus of AElfrician texts, a network of literal and figurative conceptualizations for each emotion is proposed here. Based on this network, I have reconstructed and analysed patterns of conceptual variation in AElfric's English in order to show the existing tension between literal, metonymic and metaphoric expressions for these two emotions. As shall be seen here, the introduction in Anglo-Saxon England of Augustinian psychology by AElfric and other highly educated authors favoured (i) the progressive neglect of the Germanic concept of shame and guilt as instruments of social control, (ii) the dissemination of new shame-related values, and (iii) the growing use of a new set of embodied conceptualizations for the two emotions under scrutiny here, most of which have become common figurative expressions of shame and guilt in later varieties of English. The new expressions (e.g., SHAME IS SOMETHING COVERING A PERSON, GUILT IS A BURDEN) illustrate the shift towards a progressive embodiment of the new emotional standards brought by Christianization. According to these standards, rather than an external judgment or reproach, shame and guilt involve a negative evaluation of oneself. 17. Modeling self-organization of vocabularies under phonological similarity effects

Abstract

This work develops a computational model (by Automata Networks) of phonological similarity effects involved in the formation of word-meaning associations on artificial populations of speakers. Classical studies show that in recalling experiments memory performance was impaired for phonologically similar words versus dissimilar ones. Here, the individuals confound phonologically similar words according to a predefined parameter. The main hypothesis is that there is a critical range of the parameter, and with this, of working-memory mechanisms, which implies drastic changes in the final consensus of the entire population. Theoretical results present proofs of convergence for a particular case of the model within a worst-case complexity framework. Computer simulations describe the evolution of an energy function that measures the amount of local agreement between individuals. Traditionally, the formation of vocabularies has been studied by agent-based models (specially, the Naming Game) in which random pairs of agents negotiate word-meaning associations at each discrete time step. This paper proposes a first approximation to a novel question: To what extent the negotiation of word-meaning associations is influenced by the order in which the individuals interact? Abstract

Can artificial communities of agents develop language with scaling relations close to the Zipf law? As a preliminary answer to this question, we propose an Automata Networks model of the formation of a vocabulary on a population of individuals, under two in principle opposite strategies: the alignment and the least effort principle. Within the previous account to the emergence of linguistic conventions (specially, the Naming Game), we focus on modeling speaker and hearer efforts as actions over their vocabularies and we study the impact of these actions on the formation of a shared language. The numerical simulations are essentially based on an energy function, that measures the amount of local agreement between the vocabularies. Abstract

Las servidumbres se consideran gravámenes impuestos sobre un predio en utilidad de otro predio de distinto dueño. Dentro de las principales servidumbres se resaltan las de luz y vista, las cuales son consideradas intangibles, por su medición cualitativa y en algunos casos subjetiva. El método Analytic Hierarchi Process (AHP) es un método cuantitativo que se aplica para la toma de decisiones multicriterio que permite generar escalas de propiedades, asignando valores a variables de naturaleza cualitativa. En la presente monografía se realiza una estimación de la incidencia de las servidumbres de luz y vista en la valoración de un edificio residencial multifamiliar urbano, mediante la definición de variables explicativas, aplicando el método analítico jerárquico AHP. En el ejercicio práctico, se puede evidenciar que los métodos multicriterio permiten analizar de forma racional y soportada matemáticamente las incidencias y relación de variables establecidas, permitiendo la estimación de mediciones cualitativas de forma certera. Easements are considered encumbrances imposed on a property for the benefit of another property of a different owner. Among the main easements, those of light and sight stand out, which are considered intangible, due to their qualitative measurement and in some cases subjective. The Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method is a quantitative method that is applied to multi – criteria decision making that allows generating scales of properties, assigning values to variables of a qualitative nature. In this monograph, an estimate is made of the incidence of light and view easements in the valuation of an urban multi-family residential building, through the definition of explanatory variables, applying the AHP hierarchical analytic method. In the practical exercise, it can be seen that the multicriteria methods allow for a rational and mathematically supported analysis of the incidences and relationship of established variables, allowing the estimation of qualitative measurements in an accurate way.
