9. Machine learning for literature classification during systematic literature review – establishing the minimum threshold for labelling papers

Abstract

Taking inspiration from the use of machine learning in the field of medicine for literature classification, this paper explores the use of machine learning to aid the classification of documents during systematic literature reviews in the field of business and management studies. The performances of two machine learning models, SVM and Logistic regression, are compared. The dataset used is a labelled dataset on weak signal literature. The data is iteratively split into training and testing sets with the aim of minimising the training set. The models were evaluated on Sensitivity (Recall), Precision, Specificity, Accuracy, and f1_Score to find the optimal training split. The optimal value was found to be between 40% to 50%. Which meant only 40% to 50% of the dataset needed to be labelled for the machine learning model to predict the labels for the rest of the dataset. Even though machine learning will not eliminate the labour involved in systematic literature reviews, it will save the amount of labour involved and the amount of time required.

Abstract

We look at how the relatively grounded concept 'open innovation' has led to the development of open strategy and open foresight and focus on the latter twos' interaction, building a conceptual case and contributing to strategic management literature. Current literature focuses on innovation, we focus on SMEs strategy making. We conclude this paper highlighting that foresight practices have always advocated of being 'open' for collecting insights which is similar to what is advocated by open strategy, thus presenting an opportunity to explore both the conceptual and normative effects of combining open strategy and open foresight literature.

20. Exploration of novel descriptors for online writer identication

Abstract

Supervisor: Suresh Sundaram, The problem of writer identification refers to the task of deciding on the authorship of a piece of handwritten document by comparing it against a set of samples saved in a database. Technology has aided in the design of hand held devices like tablets that can capture a person's handwriting. The main constituent of these devices is an electronic pen/stylus that helps in obtaining the dynamic information in handwriting through its tip. Online writer identification systems make use of such textual content for deriving the identity of the writer.The present thesis focuses on proposing novel descriptors for a text-independent online writer identification system. In the first part of our work, we represent the spatio-temporal trace from a document with descriptors derived from a codebook. The derived descriptors take into account, the scores of each of the attributes in a feature vector, that are computed with regards of the proximity to their corresponding values in the assigned codevector of the codebook.

Abstract

Advances in microsurgical techniques have increased the use of free tissue transfer. Methods of intraoperative flap perfusion assessment, however, still rely primarily on subjective evaluation of traditional clinical parameters. Anastomotic thrombosis, if not expeditiously identified and revised, can result in flap loss with significant associated morbidity. This study aims to evaluate the use of near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence imaging in the assessment of microsurgical anastomotic patency, thrombosis, and vascular revision.A model of pedicle thrombosis was created using bilateral abdominal flaps isolated on deep superior epigastric vascular pedicles in four Yorkshire pigs. Following flap elevation, microvascular arterial and venous anastomoses were performed unilaterally, preserving an intact contralateral control flap. Thrombosis was induced at the arterial anastomosis site using ferric chloride, and both flaps imaged using NIR fluorescence angiography. The thrombosed vascular segments were subsequently excised and new anastomoses performed to restore flow. Follow-up imaging of both flaps was then obtained to confirm patency using fluorescence imaging technology.Pedicled abdominal flaps were created and successful anastomotic thrombosis was induced unilaterally in each pig. Fluorescence imaging technology identified large decreases in tissue perfusion of the thrombosed flap within 2 minutes. After successful revision anastomosis, NIR imaging demonstrated dramatic increase in flow to the reconstructed flap, but intensity did not return to pre-thrombosis levels.Early identification of anastomotic thrombosis is important in successful free tissue transfer. Real-time, intraoperative evaluation of flap perfusion, anastomotic thrombosis, and successful revision can be performed using NIR fluorescence imaging.
