1. Linguistic Knowledge Can Enhance Encoder-Decoder Models (If You Let It)

Abstract

In this paper, we explore the impact of augmenting pre-trained Encoder-Decoder models, specifically T5, with linguistic knowledge for the prediction of a target task. In particular, we investigate whether fine-tuning a T5 model on an intermediate task that predicts structural linguistic properties of sentences modifies its performance in the target task of predicting sentence-level complexity. Our study encompasses diverse experiments conducted on Italian and English datasets, employing both monolingual and multilingual T5 models at various sizes. Results obtained for both languages and in cross-lingual configurations show that linguistically motivated intermediate fine-tuning has generally a positive impact on target task performance, especially when applied to smaller models and in scenarios with limited data availability., Comment: Accepted to LREC-COLING 2024

7. Linguistic Profiling of a Neural Language Model

Abstract

In this paper we investigate the linguistic knowledge learned by a Neural Language Model (NLM) before and after a fine-tuning process and how this knowledge affects its predictions during several classification problems. We use a wide set of probing tasks, each of which corresponds to a distinct sentence-level feature extracted from different levels of linguistic annotation. We show that BERT is able to encode a wide range of linguistic characteristics, but it tends to lose this information when trained on specific downstream tasks. We also find that BERT's capacity to encode different kind of linguistic properties has a positive influence on its predictions: the more it stores readable linguistic information of a sentence, the higher will be its capacity of predicting the expected label assigned to that sentence., Comment: Accepted to COLING 2020

11. Successful Use of Cemiplimab in a Very Elderly Patient With Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

Abstract

Background/Aim: Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a common skin cancer with significant morbidity and mortality, particularly in advanced stages. Treatment options for metastatic cutaneous SCC in very elderly patients are limited due to concerns about treatment tolerability and potential adverse effects. Case Report: We report the case of a 90-year-old female patient with metastatic cutaneous SCC who was treated with cemiplimab, a monoclonal antibody (m-Ab) against programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1), in combination with radiotherapy. The patient received cemiplimab for a limited period, during which time she demonstrated significant clinical improvement without severe adverse events. Radiotherapy was performed as a locoregional treatment with the aim to enhance immunotherapy efficacy. Discussion: This case highlights the feasibility and effectiveness of cemiplimab in very elderly patients with metastatic cutaneous SCC. Despite the common apprehensions regarding the use of immunotherapy in this age group, our patient tolerated cemiplimab well, and the combination with radiotherapy proved beneficial. This suggests that even in very elderly patients, short-term use of cemiplimab, in conjunction with locoregional treatments such as radiotherapy, can be a viable and successful therapeutic approach. Conclusion: Cemiplimab, even in combination with radiotherapy, can be effectively and safely administered to very elderly patients with metastatic cutaneous SCC. This case supports the consideration of immunotherapy, even for a limited duration, as a practical option in the management of advanced cutaneous SCC in elderly patients, expanding the potential treatment strategies for this population. Abstract

The traditional perception of ribosomes as uniform molecular machines has been revolutionized by recent discoveries, revealing a complex landscape of ribosomal heterogeneity. Opposing the conventional belief in interchangeable ribosomal entities, emerging studies underscore the existence of specialized ribosomes, each possessing unique compositions and functions. Factors such as cellular and tissue specificity, developmental and physiological states, and external stimuli, including circadian rhythms, significantly influence ribosome compositions. For instance, muscle cells and neurons are characterized by distinct ribosomal protein sets and dynamic behaviors, respectively. Furthermore, alternative forms of ribosomal RNA (rRNAs) and their post-transcriptional modifications add another dimension to this heterogeneity. These variations, orchestrated by spatial, temporal, and conditional factors, enable the manifestation of a broad spectrum of specialized ribosomes, each tailored for potentially distinct functions. Such specialization not only impacts mRNA translation and gene expression but also holds significant implications for broader biological contexts, notably in the realm of cancer research. As the understanding of ribosomal diversity deepens, it also paves the way for exploring novel avenues in cellular function and offers a fresh perspective on the molecular intricacies of translation. Abstract

Purpose: The authors' goal is to investigate variations in the writing style of book reviews published on different social reading platforms and referring to books of different genres, which enables acquiring insights into communication strategies adopted by readers to share their reading experiences. Design/methodology/approach: The authors propose a corpus-based study focused on the analysis of A Good Review, a novel corpus of online book reviews written in Italian, posted on Amazon and Goodreads, and covering six literary fiction genres. The authors rely on stylometric analysis to explore the linguistic properties and lexicon of reviews and the authors conducted automatic classification experiments using multiple approaches and feature configurations to predict either the review's platform or the literary genre. Findings: The analysis of user-generated reviews demonstrates that language is a quite variable dimension across reading platforms, but not as much across book genres. The classification experiments revealed that features modelling the syntactic structure of the sentence are reliable proxies for discerning Amazon and Goodreads reviews, whereas lexical information showed a higher predictive role for automatically discriminating the genre. Originality/value: The high availability of cultural products makes information services necessary to help users navigate these resources and acquire information from unstructured data. This study contributes to a better understanding of the linguistic characteristics of user-generated book reviews, which can support the development of linguistically-informed recommendation services. Abstract

This paper focuses on the role and perspectives of Human Intelligence in the digital era. It explores technological advancements that can be harnessed by Intelligence and Security practitioners in the fields of HUMINT and its associated support activities. The paper considers various technologies, including tools for decision support, deception and information detection, and strategies for mitigating cognitive biases and other limiting factors. The analysis concerns technologies, tools and techniques used in all phases of the Intelligence Cycle, evaluating their utility considering the current challenges posed by them for Intelligence Communities and Law Enforcement Agencies. Recent developments in technologies which support other Intelligence disciplines such as SIGINT, IMINT and OSINT have potentially diminished the standing and priority of HUMINT within the Intelligence Cycle. Moreover, psychology has a crucial role in comprehending HUMINT, as human minds have their imperfections, and psychological processes like cognitive biases can result in unanticipated mistakes and unintentional outcomes within the field of Intelligence. Still, HUMINT sources continue to play a fundamental role in Intelligence Collection, analysis, and interpretation, due to their ability to recall, recognise, contextualise, and establish connections between different information. Abstract

This paper reports on the EC-funded research to study and fight terrorist narratives, considering the outputs of the EC-funded research projects - and the analysis techniques implemented in those projects – retrieved from the Community Research and Development Information Service (CORDIS) portal. Projects dedicated specifically to terrorist narratives and counternarratives were investigated in detail, among those funded by the EU's framework programmes for research and innovation (FP1 to Horizon 2020) as well as the European Research Council (ERC) and Internal Security Fund Police (ISFP) frameworks. A summary of the main results is provided in the paper by means of an overview of the main terrorist narratives, considering information and data emerged from the review of selected research projects, enriched with general literature review. Five terrorist narratives are addressed: a) Jihadist violent extremist narratives, b) Right-wing violent extremist narratives, c) Left-wing and anarchist violent extremist narratives, d) Ethnonationalist and Separatist violent extremist narratives; e) Single issue-terrorism violent extremist narratives (e.g. animal rights, environmental terrorism, etc.). Details are also provided for the most widely used analytical technique, e.g. semantic analysis of terrorist narratives disseminated online. The review attempts to build an informational bridge providing the research know-how to the pan-European network of Security and Intelligence practitioners, so that the collected information can be translated into practical recommendations, technologies and tools enabling practitioners to perform their duty against terrorism in an enhanced, optimized and more efficient manner.

Abstract

The eighth edition of the Italian Conference on Computational Linguistics (CLiC-it 2021) was held at Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca from 26th to 28th January 2022. After the edition of 2020, which was held in fully virtual mode due to the health emergency related to Covid-19, CLiC-it 2021 represented the first moment for the Italian research community of Computational Linguistics to meet in person after more than one year of full/partial lockdown.
