We present an analysis of spectroscopic data of the cool, highly magnetic and polluted white dwarf 2MASS J0916-4215. The atmosphere of the white dwarf is dominated by hydrogen, but numerous spectral lines of magnesium, calcium, titanium, chromium, iron, strontium, along with Li I, Na I, Al I, and K I lines, are found in the incomplete Paschen-Back regime, most visibly, in the case of Ca II lines. Extensive new calculations of the Paschen-Back effect in several spectral lines are presented and results of the calculations are tabulated for the Ca II H&K doublet. The abundance pattern shows a large lithium and strontium excess, which may be viewed as a signature of planetary debris akin to Earth's continental crust accreted onto the star, although the scarcity of silicon indicates possible dilution in bulk Earth material. Accurate abundance measurements proved sensitive to the value of the broadening parameter due to collisions with neutral hydrogen (Gamma_HI), particularly in saturated lines such as the resonance lines of Ca I and Ca II. We found that Gamma_HI if formulated with values from the literature could be overestimated by a factor of 10 in most resonance lines., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

White dwarfs, the extremely dense remnants left behind by most stars after their death, are characterised by a mass comparable to that of the Sun compressed into the size of an Earth-like planet. In the resulting strong gravity, heavy elements sink toward the centre and the upper layer of the atmosphere contains only the lightest element present, usually hydrogen or helium. Several mechanisms compete with gravitational settling to change a white dwarf's surface composition as it cools, and the fraction of white dwarfs with helium atmospheres is known to increase by a factor ~2.5 below a temperature of about 30,000 K; therefore, some white dwarfs that appear to have hydrogen-dominated atmospheres above 30,000 K are bound to transition to be helium-dominated as they cool below it. Here we report observations of ZTF J203349.8+322901.1, a transitioning white dwarf with two faces: one side of its atmosphere is dominated by hydrogen and the other one by helium. This peculiar nature is likely caused by the presence of a small magnetic field, which creates an inhomogeneity in temperature, pressure or mixing strength over the surface. ZTF J203349.8+322901.1 might be the most extreme member of a class of magnetic, transitioning white dwarfs -- together with GD 323, a white dwarf that shows similar but much more subtle variations. We have investigated the origin of a sub-class of carbon-polluted white dwarfs (DQ) originally identified as the ``hot DQ" white dwarfs. These objects are relatively hot (10 000 < T_eff < 25 000 K), have markedly higher carbon abundance (C-enriched), are more massive (M > 0.8 M_Sun) than ordinary DQs (M ~ 0.6 M_Sun), and display high space velocities. Hence, despite their young appearance their kinematic properties are those of an old white dwarf population. The way out of this dilemma is to assume that they formed via the merging of two white dwarfs. In this paper we examine the observed characteristics of this population of ``C-enriched" DQ white dwarfs and confirm that nearly half of the 63 known objects have kinematic properties consistent with those of the Galactic thick disc or halo. We have also conducted population synthesis studies and found that the merging hypothesis is indeed compatible with observations. Studies of this sub-class of white dwarfs have important implications for our understanding of Type Ia Supernovae (SNeIa), commonly used to determine the expansion history of the universe, since the same formation channel applies to both kinds of objects. Hence probing the properties of these white dwarfs that failed to explode may yield important constraints to the modelling of the mechanisms leading to a thermonuclear runaway., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report the discovery of a rare close binary system, SMSS J160639.78-100010.7, comprised of a magnetic white dwarf with a field of about 30 MG and a brown dwarf. We measured an orbital period of 92 min which is consistent with the photometric period. Minimum and maximum light occur at the orbital quadratures Phi=0.25 and 0.75, respectively, and cannot be caused by reflection on the brown dwarf, but, instead, by a spot on the synchronously rotating magnetic white dwarf. The brown dwarf does not fill its Roche lobe and the system may be in a low-accretion state or, more likely, in a detached state following episodes of mass transfer. We present an analysis of photometric, spectroscopic and spectropolarimetric data of the nearby, cool, magnetic DZ white dwarf PM J08186-3110. High dispersion spectra show the presence of Zeeman splitted spectral lines due to the presence of a surface average magnetic field of 92 kG. The strong magnesium and calcium lines show extended wings shaped by interactions with neutral helium in a dense, cool helium-rich atmosphere. We found that the abundance of heavy elements varied between spectra taken ten years apart but we could not establish a time-scale for these variations; such variations may be linked to surface abundance variations in the magnetized atmosphere. Finally, we show that volume limited samples reveal that about 40% of DZ white dwarfs with effective temperatures below 7000 K are magnetic., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the orbit and properties of 2MASS J050051.85-093054.9, establishing it as the closest (d ~ 71 pc) extremely low mass white dwarf to the Sun. We find that this star is hydrogen-rich with Teff ~ 10 500 K, log g ~ 5.9, and, following evolutionary models, has a mass of ~ 0.17 solar masses. Independent analysis of radial velocity and TESS photometric time series reveals an orbital period of ~ 9.5 h. Its high velocity amplitude (K ~ 144 km/s) produces a measurable Doppler beaming effect in the TESS light curve with an amplitude of 1 mmag. The unseen companion is most likely a faint white dwarf. J0500-0930 belongs to a class of post-common envelope systems that will most likely merge through unstable mass transfer and in specific circumstances lead to Type Ia supernova explosions., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS Letters

We present an analysis and re-appraisal of the massive, carbon-enriched (DQ) white dwarf (WD) LP 93-21. Its high mass (~1 M_sun) and membership to the class of warm DQ WDs, combined with its peculiar halo kinematics suggest that this object is the product of an ancient stellar merger event, most likely that of two WDs. Furthermore, the kinematics places this object on a highly retrograde orbit driven by the accretion of a dwarf galaxy onto the Milky Way that occurred at a red shift greater than 1.5. We report the discovery of a new, polluted, magnetic white dwarf in the Luyten survey of high-proper motion stars. High-dispersion spectra of NLTT 7547 reveal a complex heavy element line spectrum in a cool (~5 200 K) hydrogen-dominated atmosphere showing the effect of a surface averaged field of 163 kG, consistent with a 240 kG centred dipole, although the actual field structure remains uncertain. The abundance pattern shows the effect of accreted material with a distinct magnesium-rich flavour. Combined with earlier identifications, this discovery supports a correlation between the incidence of magnetism in cool white dwarfs and their contamination by heavy elements., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present an analysis of the close double degenerate NLTT 12758, which is comprised of a magnetic white dwarf with a field of about 3.1 MG and an apparently non-magnetic white dwarf. We measured an orbital period of 1.154 days and found that the magnetic white dwarf is spinning around its axis with a period of 23 minutes. An analysis of the atmospheric parameters has revealed that the cooling ages of the two white dwarfs are comparable, suggesting that they formed within a short period of time from each other. Our modelling indicates that the non-magnetic white dwarf is more massive (M=0.83 M_sun) than its magnetic companion (M=0.69 M_sun) and that the total mass of the system is higher than the Chandrasekhar mass. Although the stars will not come into contact over a Hubble time, when they do come into contact, dynamically unstable mass transfer will take place leading to either an accretion induced collapse into a rapidly spinning neutron star or a Type Ia supernova., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present an analysis of intermediate-dispersion spectra and photometric data of the newly identified cool, polluted white dwarf NLTT19868. The spectra obtained with X-shooter on the Very Large Telescope (VLT)-Melipal show strong lines of calcium, and several lines of magnesium, aluminium and iron. We use these spectra and the optical-to-near infrared spectral energy distribution to constrain the atmospheric parameters of NLTT19868. Our analysis shows that NLTT19868 is iron poor with respect to aluminium and calcium. A comparison with other cool, polluted white dwarfs shows that the Fe to Ca abundance ratio (Fe/Ca) varies by up to approximately two orders of magnitudes over a narrow temperature range with NLTT19868 at one extremum in the Fe/Ca ratio and, in contrast, NLTT888 at the other extremum. The sample shows evidence of extreme diversity in the composition of the accreted material: In the case of NLTT888, the inferred composition of the accreted matter is akin to iron-rich planetary core composition, while in the case of NLTT19868 it is close to mantle or bulk-Earth composition depleted by subsequent chemical separation at the bottom of the convection zone., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Separating the subdwarf populations may shed light on their formation history and give unique insights into the atmospheric processes that are thought to be responsible for their abundance diversity. Such a task requires complex and time consuming spectral analyses, which we started to tailor to our objectives a year ago. We present an update of our low-resolution spectroscopic follow-up and model atmosphere analysis of hot subdwarf stars from the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) survey. Targets were selected on the basis of colour indices calculated from the GALEX GR6 N_UV, Guide Star Catalogue (GSC2.3.2) V and the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) J and H photometry. High signal-to-noise ratio spectra were obtained at the European Southern Observatory (ESO) and the Kitt Peak National Observatory (KPNO) over the course of three years. Detailed H, He and CNO abundance analysis helped us improve our T_eff, log g and He abundance determination and to constrain CNO abundances. We processed 191 observations of 180 targets and found 124 sdB and 42 sdO stars in this sample while some blue horizontal branch stars were also found in this programme. With quantitative binary decomposition of 29 composite spectra we investigated the incidence of A, F and G type companions. We have analyzed a sample of hot subdwarfs (sdB, sdO) selected from the GALEX ultraviolet sky survey. Applying a model atmosphere analysis we determined the temperature, surface gravity, and helium-to-hydrogen abundance ratio, and obtained preliminary constraints on the CNO abundance for a sample of 181 stars. We conducted a spectropolarimetic survey of 58 high proper-motion white dwarfs which achieved uncertainties of >2 kG in the Halpha line and >5 kG in the upper Balmer line series. The survey aimed at detecting low magnetic fields (< 100 kG) and helped identify the new magnetic white dwarfs NLTT 2219, with a longitudinal field B_l = -97 kG, and NLTT 10480 (B_l=-212 kG). Also, we report the possible identification of a very low-field white dwarf with B_l = -4.6 kG. The observations show that ~5% of white dwarfs harbour low fields (~10 to ~10^2 kG) and that increased survey sensitivity may help uncover several new magnetic white dwarfs with fields below ~1 kG. A series of observations of the high field white dwarf NLTT 12758 revealed changes in polarity occurring within an hour possibly associated to an inclined, fast rotating dipole. Also, the relative strength of the pi and sigma components in NLTT 12758 possibly revealed the effect of a field concentration ("spot"), or, most likely, the presence of a non-magnetic white dwarf companion. Similar observations of NLTT 13015 also showed possible polarity variations, but without a clear indication of the timescale. The survey data also proved useful in constraining the chemical composition, age and kinematics of a sample of cool white dwarfs as well as in constraining the incidence of double degenerates., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We describe our programme to identify and analyse binary stars among the bright subdwarfs selected in the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) survey. Radial velocity time-series helped us identify subdwarfs with low-mass or compact stellar companions: We describe work conducted on the bright binaries GALEX J0321+4727 and GALEX J2349+3844, and we present a radial velocity study of several objects that include three new likely binaries. We present a model atmosphere analysis of cool hydrogen-rich white dwarfs observed at the Very Large Telescope (VLT) with the X-shooter spectrograph. The intermediate-dispersion and high signal-to-noise ratio of the spectra allowed us to conduct a detailed analysis of hydrogen and heavy element line profiles. In particular, we tested various prescriptions for hydrogen Balmer line broadening parameters and determined the effective temperature and surface gravity of each star. Three objects (NLTT 1675, 6390 and 11393) show the presence of heavy elements (Mg, Al, Ca, or Fe). Our abundance analysis revealed a relatively high iron to calcium ratio in NLTT 1675 and NLTT 6390. We also present an analysis of spectropolarimetric data obtained at the VLT using the focal reducer and low dispersion spectrograph (FORS) and we established strict upper limits on the magnetic field strengths in three of the DAZ white dwarfs and determined the longitudinal magnetic field strength in the DAZ NLTT 10480. The class of DAZ white dwarfs comprises objects that are possibly accreting material from their immediate circumstellar environment and the present study contributes in establishing class properties., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

We have identified a new, cool magnetic white dwarf in the New Luyten Two-Tenths (NLTT) catalogue. The high proper-motion star NLTT 10480 (mu=0.5"/year) shows weak Zeeman-split lines of calcium, as well as characteristic Halpha and beta Zeeman triplets. Using VLT X-shooter spectra we measured a surface-averaged magnetic field B_S ~ 0.5 MG. The relative intensity of the pi and sigma components of the calcium and hydrogen lines imply a high inclination (i > 60 deg). The optical-to-infrared V-J colour index and the CaI/CaII ionization balance indicate a temperature between 4900 and 5200 K, while the Balmer line profiles favour a higher temperature of 5400 K. The discrepancy is potentially resolved by increasing the metallicity to 0.03x solar, hence increasing the electron pressure. However, the measured calcium abundance and abundance upper limits for other elements (Na, Al, Si. and Fe) imply a low photospheric metallicity < 10^{-4} solar. Assuming diffusion steady-state, a calcium accretion rate of log(dM/dt)(g/s)=5.6+/-0.3 is required to sustain a calcium abundance of log(n(Ca)/n(H))=-10.30+/-0.30 in the white dwarf atmosphere. We present an abundance analysis of a sample of 33 hydrogen-rich (DA) white dwarfs. We have used archival high-resolution spectra to measure abundances of calcium, magnesium and iron in a set of 30 objects. In addition, we present preliminary calcium abundances in three new white dwarfs based on low-dispersion spectra. We present an analysis of high-dispersion and high signal-to-noise ratio spectra of the DAZ white dwarf GALEX J1931+0117. The spectra obtained with the VLT-Kueyen/UV-Visual Echelle Spectrograph show several well-resolved Si II spectral lines enabling a study of pressure effects on line profiles. We observed large Stark shifts in silicon lines in agreement with laboratory measurements. A model atmosphere analysis shows that the magnesium, silicon and iron abundances exceed solar abundances, while the oxygen and calcium abundances are below solar. Also, we compared the observed line profiles to synthetic spectra computed with variable accretion rates and vertical abundance distributions assuming diffusion steady-state. The inferred accretion rates vary from dM/dt=2x10^6 for calcium to 2x10^9 g/s for oxygen and indicate that the accretion flow is dominated by oxygen, silicon and iron while being deficient in carbon, magnesium and calcium. The lack of radial velocity variations between two measurement epochs suggests that GALEX J1931+0117 is probably not in a close binary and that the source of the accreted material resides in a debris disc., Comment: Part of PlanetsbeyondMS/2010 proceedings http://arxiv.org/html/1011.6606

We present FUSE observations of the hot white dwarfs in the post-common envelope binaries Feige 24, EUVE J0720-317, BPM 6502, and EUVE J2013+400. The spectra show numerous photospheric absorption lines which trace the white dwarf orbital motion. We report the detection of C III, O VI, P V, and Si IV in the spectra of Feige 24, EUVE J0720-317 and EUVE J2013+400, and the detection of C III, N II, Si III, Si IV, and Fe III in the spectra of BPM 6502. Abundance measurements support the possibility that white dwarfs in post-common envelope binaries accrete material from the secondary star wind. The FUSE observations of BPM 6502 and EUVE J2013+400 cover a complete binary orbit. We used the FUSE spectra to measure the radial velocities traced by the white dwarf in the four binaries, where the zero-point velocity were fixed using the ISM velocities in the line of sight of the stellar systems. For BPM 6502 we determined a white dwarf velocity semi-amplitude of K_WD = 18.6+/-0.5km/s, and with the velocity semi-amplitude of the red dwarf companion (K_RD = 75.2+/-3.1 km/s), we estimate the mass ratio to be q = 0.25+/-0.01. Adopting a spectroscopic mass determination for the white dwarf, we infer a low secondary mass of M_RD = 0.14+/-0.01 M_solar. For EUVE J2013+400 we determine a white dwarf velocity semi-amplitude of K_WD = 36.7+/-0.7 km/s. The FUSE observations of EUVE J0720-317 cover approximately 30% of the binary period and combined with the HST GHRS measurements (Vennes et al. 1999, ApJ 523, 386), we update the binary properties. FUSE observations of Feige 24 cover approximately 60% of the orbit and we combine this data set with HST STIS (Vennes et al. 2000, ApJ, 544, 423) data to update the binary properties., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Based on photometric and astrometric data it has been proposed that Albus 1 (also known as CPD-20 1123) might be a hot white dwarf similar to G191-B2B or, alternatively, a hot subdwarf. We obtained a series of optical spectra showing that CPD-20 1123 is a bright He-B subdwarf. We analyzed the HI Balmer and HeI line spectra and measured T_eff = 19800+/-400 K, log g = 4.55+/-0.10, and log N(He)/N(H) = 0.15+/-0.15. This peculiar object belongs to a family of evolved helium-rich stars that may be the products of double-degenerate mergers, or, alternatively, the products of post horizontal- or giant-branch evolution., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letters

We have cross-correlated the 2dF QSO Redshift Survey (2QZ) white dwarf catalog with the GALEX 2nd Data Release and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data release 5 to obtain ultraviolet photometry (FUV, NUV) for approximately 700 objects and optical photometry (ugriz) for approximately 800 objects. We have compared the optical-ultraviolet colors to synthetic white dwarf colors to obtain temperature estimates for approximately 250 of these objects. These white dwarfs have effective temperatures ranging from 10 000 K (cooling age of about 1Gyr) up to about 40 000 K (cooling age of about 3 Myrs), with a few that have even higher temperatures. We found that to distinguish white dwarfs from other stellar luminosity classes both optical and ultraviolet colors are necessary, in particular for the hotter objects where there is contamination from B and O main-sequence stars. We present a study of the iron abundance pattern in hot hydrogen-rich (DA) white dwarfs. The study is based on new and archival far ultraviolet spectroscopy of a sample of white dwarfs in the temperature range 30,000 K < T_eff < 64,000 K. The spectra obtained with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer along with spectra obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph and the International Ultraviolet Explorer sample FeIII to FeVI absorption lines enabling a detailed iron abundance analysis over a wider range of effective temperatures than previously afforded. The measurements reveal abundance variations in excess of two orders of magnitude between the highest and the lowest temperatures probed, but also show considerable variations (over one order of magnitude) between objects with similar temperatures and surface gravities. Such variations in cooler objects may be imputed to accretion from unseen companions or so-called circumstellar debris although the effect of residual mass-loss and selective radiation pressure in the hottest objects in the sample remain dominant., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We report the identification of LP 400-22 (WD 2234+222) as a very low-mass and high-velocity white dwarf. The ultraviolet GALEX and optical photometric colors and a spectral line analysis of LP 400-22 show this star to have an effective temperature of 11080+/-140 K and a surface gravity of log g = 6.32+/-0.08. Therefore, this is a helium core white dwarf with a mass of 0.17 M_solar. The tangential velocity of this white dwarf is 414+/-43 km/s, making it one of the fastest moving white dwarfs known. The New Luyten Two-Tenths catalog contains a large number of high-proper motion white dwarf candidates that remain to be spectroscopically confirmed. We present new spectroscopic observations as well as SDSS archival spectra of 49 white dwarf candidates which have been selected from the revised NLTT catalog of Salim & Gould 2003. Out of these, 34 are cool DA white dwarfs with temperatures ranging from approximately 5000 K up to 11690 K, and 11 are DC white dwarfs with temperatures ranging from 4300 K (NLTT 18555) up to 11000 K. Three of the DA white dwarfs also display abundances of heavy elements (NLTT 3915, NLTT 44986 and NLTT 43806) and one is a cool magnetic white dwarf (NLTT 44447) with an estimated magnetic field strength of 1.3 MG. We also present a new cool DQ white dwarf (NLTT 31347) with an estimated temperature of 6250 K. We supplement our sample with SDSS ugriz photometry for a fraction of the newly identified white dwarfs. A kinematical study of this sample of white dwarfs, characterized by proper motions ranging from 0.136 to 0.611 arcsec per yr suggest that they belong to the thin disk population., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ, fixed typo in text

Optical spectroscopic observations of GX 339-4 were carried out between 1998 May (X-ray high state) and 1999 May (X-ray low state) over 7 epochs. The equivalent width of Halpha increased during the high state then decreased during the low state. The equivalent width of HeII 4686 decreased over both states. The full-width half-maximum of Halpha, Hbeta, HeII 4686 and the Bowen Blend increased from 1998 to 1999 indicating that the emission line regions moved closer to the compact object. Hbeta shows a redshifted absorption feature at 4880 angstroms at all epochs. This line remains unidentified. Analysis of individual spectra from 1998 May 28-31 show modulation of the radial velocities, equivalent width and V/R ratios of Halpha on the 14.86 hour orbital period. The equivalent width of HeII 4686 also varies on the orbital period. This is the first time since the study of Calanan et al. (1992) that spectroscopic data has confirmed the orbital period. The semi-amplitude of the Halpha radial velocities is K_1 = 14 km/s. Hence the mass function = 2 x 10^(-4) Msun., Comment: 15 pages, 17 figures, accepted by MNRAS

We have obtained new optical and extreme ultraviolet (EUV) spectroscopy of the ultramassive white dwarf EUVE J1746-706. We revise Vennes et al.'s (1996a, ApJ, 467, 784) original estimates of the atmospheric parameters and we measure an effective temperature of 46,500 +/- 700 K and a surface gravity log g = 9.05 +/- 0.15 (~1.2 M_o), in agreement with Balmer line profiles and the EUV continuum. We derive an upper limit on the atmospheric abundance of helium of He/H = 1.3 x 10^{-4} and a neutral hydrogen column density in the local interstellar medium N_HI = 1.8 +/- 0.4 x 10^{19} cm^{-2} from the EUV spectrum. Our upper limit corresponds to half the helium abundance observed in the atmosphere of the ultramassive white dwarf GD 50. We discuss the possibility that EUVE J1746-706 represents an earlier phase of evolution relative to GD 50 and may, therefore, help us understand the origin and evolution of massive white dwarfs., Comment: 6 pages, 4 postscript figures, uses aastex, to be published in ApJ Letters

We have cross-correlated the 2dF QSO Redshift Survey (2QZ) white dwarf catalog with the GALEX 2nd Data Release and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data release 5 to obtain ultraviolet photometry (FUV, NUV) for approximately 700 objects and optical photometry (ugriz) for approximately 800 objects. We have compared the optical-ultraviolet colors to synthetic white dwarf colors to obtain temperature estimates for approximately 250 of these objects. These white dwarfs have effective temperatures ranging from 10 000 K (cooling age of about 1Gyr) up to about 40000 K (cooling age of about 3 Myrs), with a few that have even higher temperatures. We found that to distinguish white dwarfs from other stellar luminosity classes both optical and ultraviolet colors are necessary, in particular for the hotter objects where there is contamination from B and 0 main-sequence stars. Using this sample we build a luminosity function for the DA white dwarfs with Mv < 12 mag.

We determine the physical properties of the accretion region of the AM Her-type binary VV Puppis using extreme ultraviolet (EUV) medium-resolution spectroscopy and photometry obtained with the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) observatory. The EUV continuum from VV Pup was detected in the wavelength range from 75 to 135 A and was simultaneously recorded with the Deep Survey/Spectrometer (DS/S) imaging telescope, allowing for the extraction of an accurate light curve. VV Pup appeared to have entered a high-accretion state just prior to the pointed EUVE observations. We use the EUV light curve to infer the diameter of the accretion region (d = 220 km) assuming a hemispherical geometry and a radius of 9000 km for the white dwarf. We perform a model atmosphere analysis and, based on the light curve properties and assuming a distance of 145 pc, we derive an effective temperature of the accretion region in the range 270,000 is less than T(sub eff) is less than 360,000 K and a neutral hydrogen column density in the local interstellar medium of n(sub H) = 1.9 - 3.7 x 10(exp 19)/sq cm. The total EUV/soft X-ray energy radiated by the accretion region is approximately 3.5 x 10(exp 32) ergs/s. Our results provide a first verification of past suggestions that deep heating of the white dwarf surface produces the soft X-ray flux from the polars. We present a possible detection of O VI absortion features, and we suggest that extensive EUVE observations targeting high-accretion events may result in oxygen and heavier element abundance determination in the accretion region.

New optical spectroscopy shows a 0.706 d orbital period for Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) 2013+400 and confirms its membership in a class of close binary systems emerging from common-envelope evolution. This binary, like the prototype Feige 24, consists of an extreme ultraviolet (EUV) emitting hot white dwarf and a late-type dwarf. Bergeron et al.'s (1994) optical spectroscopy and ultraviolet spectrophotometry indicate that the white dwarf is hot (T(sub eff) approximately equals 50 000 K) and therefore very young (t(sub age) less than or equal 5 x 10(exp 6) yr), and extreme ultraviolet photometry places EUVE 2013+400 along a neutral hydrogen column density in the interstellar medium of n(sub H) approximately equal to 10(exp 19)/sq cm. The white dwarf is a DAO type and we obtained two independent estimates of the helium abundance from EUV photometric measurements (log(y) approximately equal to -3.2) and from the He II lambda-4686 line profile (log(y) approximately equal to -2.8). The data possibly indicate a level of heterogeneity expected in the context of on-going chemical separation in the photospheric layers. The Balmer lines show narrow emission that varies with binary phase with the equivalent widths of the emission trailing the radial velocities by 1/4 cycle: this phasing shows that most of the emission arises on the EUV-illuminated face of the red dwarf. A spectrophotometric decomposition shows that the secondary's spectral type is near M3 and that it contributes about 15%-25% of the total light near 6500 A; the resulting H-alpha emission is twice as strong as in Feige 24, with an equivalent width of 37-61 A with respect to the red dwarf continuum. EUVE 2013+400 is an important addition to the class of close binary stars discovered in EUV all-sky surveys.

We have obtained new high-dispersion optical spectroscopy at Kitt Peak National Observatory (KPNO) and new International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) spectroscopy of the white dwarf+red dwarf binary system Feige 24. The optical range shows a composite DA+dM spectrum, together with H I Balmer and He I emission. The orbital phase dependence of the emission shows that it results from extreme ultraviolet (EUV) light reprocessing in the red dwarf upper atmosphere. The systems close enough and hot enough to show this reprocessing signature only recently emerged from common-envelope evolution. The ultraviolet spectrum exclusively emanates from the white dwarf and shows numerous heavy element absorption lines. We measured accurate radial velocities of the red dwarf component motion, traced by both optical absorption and emission lines, and new radial velocities of the white dwarf, traced by ultraviolet Fe V lines. Combining these measurements, we refined the orbital parameters presented by Vennes et al. (1991), and we confirmed that the white dwarf gravitational redshift is exceptionally small with 9 +/- 2 km/s. From this we deduced that the interior is either pure helium or carbon with a thick hydrogen layer, and we derived, for the combined interior compositions, a white dwarf mass and radius of M(sub WD) = 0.44-050 solar mass and R(sub WD) = 0.028-0.036 solar radius. We suggest that Feige 24 could be a typical case of close binary evolution leading to the formation of a low-mass helium white dwarf. The mass of the red dwarf and the inclination of the system naturally follow: M(sub dM) = 0.26-0.33 solar mass, i greater than or equal to 75 deg. High-dispersion H-alpha line profiles are asymmetrical, strongly enhanced toward the blue, suggesting a moving atmosphere possibly linked to a mass loss rate of 10(exp -10) solar mass/yr. The IUE spectra taken when the system is near inferior conjunction show strong He II 1640 A absorption. The profile is highly variable in width and intensity. Because it is correlated with the passage of the white dwarf at inferior conjunction, the absorption may occur in some foreground plasma emanated by the red dwarf and accumulating near a Lagrangian point or, alternatively, it may originate in an accretion spot on the white dwarf surface coaligned with the major orbital axis. Either way, the He II detection may imply substantial mass loss from the red dwarf with a corollary reclassification of Feige 24 as a mixed He/H DAO white dwarf resulting from accretion of secondary mass-loss material. Feige 24 is the prototype of a class of young, EUV-emitting, binary systems comprising a late main sequence secondary and a hot H-rich white dwarf; the class is characterized by optical and ultraviolet photospheric He II absorption, circumstellar C IV lambda (1550) absorption, and by the presence of EUV-induced, phase-dependent Balmer fluorescence. These young systems present the best opportunity to constrain theory of common-envelope evolution.

A new precataclysmic binary is identified in the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) all-sky survey. The bright source EUVE 0720-317 shows a hot hydrogen-rich white dwarf optical continuum with overlying narrow Balmer-line emission. Using high signal-to-noise ratio spectroscopy in the 4100-6700 A range, we identify a late-type companion and find a 1.3d periodic modulation in the emission-line velocities and strengths. This is the signature of Feige 24-type close binary systems. We determine the components' spectral types (DAO and dM0-2), orbital velocities (K(sub DAO) = 104 +/- 12 km/s, K(sub dM) = 96 +/- 7 km/s), and systemic velocity (gamma = 15 +/- 12 km/s). A first estimate of the white dwarf gravitational redshift, gamma(sub g) = 45 +/- 20 km/s, and theoretical mass-radius relationships imply R(sub DAO) = 0.010-0.016 solar radius and M(sub DAO) = 0.55-0.90 solar mass. The orbital inclination is therefore i greater than or equal to 52 deg, consistent with the large amplitude variations found in H-alpha equivalent widths that imply i greater than or equal to 42 deg. We show that the discovery of new close WD + MS binary systems in extreme ultraviolet (EUV) sky surveys has important implications for theory of common-envelope evolution, in particular for the predicted close binary birthrate and orbital and stellar parameters.
