Magnetoelectric multiferroics, either single-phase or composites comprising ferroelectric/ferromagnetic coupled films, are promising candidates for energy efficient memory computing. However, most of the multiferroic magnetoelectric systems studied so far are based on materials that are not compatible with industrial processes. Doped hafnia is emerging as one of the few CMOS-compatible ferroelectric materials. Thus, it is highly relevant to study the integration of ferroelectric hafnia into multiferroic systems. In particular, ferroelectricity in hafnia, and the eventual magnetoelectric coupling when ferromagnetic layers are grown atop of it, are very much dependent on quality of interfaces. Since magnetic metals frequently exhibit noticeable reactivity when grown onto oxides, it is expected that ferroelectricity and magnetoelectricity might be reduced in multiferroic hafnia-based structures. In this article, we present excellent ferroelectric endurance and retention in epitaxial Hf0.5Zr0.5O2films grown on buffered silicon using Co as the top electrode. The crucial influence of a thin Pt capping layer grown on top of Co on the ferroelectric functional characteristics is revealed by contrasting the utilization of Pt-capped Co, non-capped Co and Pt. Magnetic control of the imprint electric field (up to 40% modulation) is achieved in Pt-capped Co/Hf0.5Zr0.5O2structures, although this does not lead to appreciable tuning of the ferroelectric polarization, as a result of its high stability. Computation of piezoelectric and flexoelectric strain-mediated mechanisms of the observed magnetoelectric coupling reveal that flexoelectric contributions are likely to be at the origin of the large imprint electric field variation.

Achieving thermoelectric devices with high performance based on low-cost and nontoxic materials is extremely challenging. Moreover, as we move toward an Internet-of-Things society, a miniaturized local power source such as a thermoelectric generator (TEG) is desired to power increasing numbers of wireless sensors. Therefore, in this work, an all-oxide p–n junction TEG composed of low-cost, abundant, and nontoxic materials, such as n-type ZnO and p-type SnOxthin films, deposited on borosilicate glass substrate is proposed. A type II heterojunction between SnOxand ZnO films was predicted by density functional theory (DFT) calculations and confirmed experimentally by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Moreover, scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) combined with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) show a sharp interface between the SnOxand ZnO layers, confirming the high quality of the p–n junction even after annealing at 523 K. ZnO and SnOxthin films exhibit Seebeck coefficients (α) of ∼121 and ∼258 μV/K, respectively, at 298 K, resulting in power factors (PF) of 180 μW/m K2(for ZnO) and 37 μW/m K2(for SnOx). Moreover, the thermal conductivities of ZnO and SnOxfilms are 8.7 and 1.24 W/m K, respectively, at 298 K, with no significant changes until 575 K. The four pairs all-oxide TEG generated a maximum power output (Pout) of 1.8 nW (≈126 μW/cm2) at a temperature difference of 160 K. The output voltage (Vout) and output current (Iout) at the maximum power output of the TEG are 124 mV and 0.0146 μA, respectively. This work paves the way for achieving a high-performance TEG device based on oxide thin films.

Neuroimaging and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) studies have implicated a dorsal fronto-parietal network in endogenous attention control and a more ventral set of areas in exogenous attention shifts. However, the extent and circumstances under which these cortical networks overlap and/or interact remain unclear. Crucially, whereas previous studies employed experimental designs that tend to confound exogenous with endogenous attentional engagement, we used a cued target discrimination paradigm that behaviourally dissociates exogenous from endogenous attention processes. Participants engaged with endogenous attention cues, while simultaneous apparent motion cues were driving exogenous attention along the motion path towards or away from the target position. To interfere with dorsal or ventral attention networks, we delivered neuronavigated double-pulse TMS over either right intraparietal sulcus (rIPS) or right temporo-parietal junction (rTPJ) towards the end of the cue target interval, and compared the effects to a sham-TMS condition. For sham-TMS, endogenous and exogenous cueing both benefitted discrimination accuracy. Target discrimination was enhanced at validly versus invalidly cued locations (endogenous cueing benefit) as well as when targets appeared in versus out of the motion path (exogenous cueing benefit), despite motion being uninformative and task-irrelevant, replicating previous findings. Interestingly, both rIPS- and rTPJ-TMS abolished attention benefits from exogenous cueing, while endogenous cueing benefits were unaffected. Our findings provide evidence against independent involvement of the dorsal and ventral attention network nodes in exogenous attention processes.

ABSTRACTIndustry 4.0 paradigm envisions a new generation of collaborative manufacturing system where all the components are connected exploiting the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) protocol. Through this pervasive connection, sensors, machines, robots and other production equipment can communicate and share information with their surroundings resources. In order to contribute to realise such a vision, this paper introduces an event-driven framework that enables the interaction of heterogeneous distributed resources, according to the principles of Industry 4.0 paradigm. The overall aim of this research is providing new mechanisms to notify significant information produced within the factory towards enabled and interested production resources. In particular, combining various technologies such as IIoT, Semantic Web, and Multi-Agent based systems, the proposed framework allows the resources to be updated about changes occurred in their context. Under these conditions, the framework can be exploited in all the scenarios where the cooperation among resources is a strict requirement, thus contributing to support various ad-hoc services that drive modern factories towards a more sustainable, efficient, and competitive manufacturing system. Moreover, the validity of the framework is demonstrated leveraging the implementation of its instance within a real case study.

Purpose Fibrin deposition and thrombotic occlusion represent a serious cause of access dysfunction in hemodialysis central venous catheters (CVCs). The aim of this work was to define and apply a method for imaging and quantifying fibrin in thrombi formed into the side holes of CVCs.Methods Forty-three CVCs removed from a cohort of dialyzed patients were analyzed in this pilot study. Hematoxylin and eosin and a modified Carstair's staining were applied on permanent thrombus sections. Fluorescence microscopy and image analysis were performed to quantify the fibrin amount.Results Highly fluorescent areas were invariably associated with fibrin by Carstair's method. The deposition of concentric layers of fibrin and erythrocytes was easily identified by fluorescence microscopy, showing growth features of the thrombus. Fibrin amount in diabetic patients was significantly higher than that in nondiabetic patients with median (interquartile range) values of 51% (47-68%) and 44% (30-54%), respectively (p=0.032). No significant difference in fibrin content was found by grouping data according to catheter type, permanence time, insertion site and dialysis vintage. Higher variability in fibrin values was found in thrombi from CVCs removed after 1-15 days compared with 16-60 days. A trend of an increase in fibrin amount in thrombi was noted according to blood platelet count at CVC insertion.Conclusions The analytical method presented here proved to be a rapid and effective way for quantifying fibrin content in thrombi formed on CVCs with potential application in future clinical studies.

Purpose Despite the increasing use of central venous catheters (CVC) for hemodialysis in clinical practice, the role of CVC in thrombus development is poorly understood. This work aims at defining new methods and protocols for assessing the micromorphology and composition of thrombi formed into tunneled and non-tunneled hemodialysis CVC removed from patients.Methods Twenty-nine CVCs were collected and the microscopic features of intra-luminal thrombi were quantified by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and visualized by two photon laser scanning microscopy (TPLSM).Results SEM quantification showed that fibrin was the most abundant structure in CVC thrombi. Specifically, the median micromorphologic composition of the surface layer resulted in: 42.6% of fibrin plaque, 16.3% of fibrin network, 0.4% of fibrin fibers, 9.3% of platelets, 10.3% of erythrocytes and 1.7% of white blood cells. TPLSM showed that sub-surface layers were instead composed by smaller amounts of fibrin and platelets and higher amounts of blood cells.Conclusions Integration of SEM and TPLSM was found to be an excellent tool for characterizing thrombi in hemodialysis CVC removed from patients. Protocols and techniques presented here may be useful in the development and testing of new strategies for limiting thrombus formation on vascular access because of CVC.

Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) spark ignition engines equipped with the Common Rail (CR) system strongly improve engine performance in terms of fuel consumption and pollutant emission reduction. As a drawback the fuel pressure in the rail has to be kept as constant as possible to the demanded pressure working set-points in order to achieve the advantages promised by this technology. In this work a Model Reference Adaptive Control (MRAC) algorithm based on the Minimal Control Synthesis (MCS) strategy is proposed to reduce the residual pressure in the rail. Numerical results based on a CR mean value model, previously proposed in the literature and experimentally validated, show that a very satisfactory attenuation of the pressure ripple as well as pressure tracking are attained in different working conditions. A quantitative comparison with a classical gain scheduling model-based control approach confirms furthermore the effectiveness of the proposed adaptive control strategy.

Background This study investigated prevalence and correlates of anemia and uncontrolled anemia in chronic hemodialysis patients.Methods A cross-sectional analysis was performed on registry data for 2,746 chronic (<6 months) hemodialysis patients aged 25–84. Data collection included years of dialysis, hours of dialysis/wk, disease causing hemodialysis, body mass index (BMI), erythropoietin (EPO) treatment, hemoglobin, markers of viral hepatitis, serum albumin, calcium, and phosphorus.Results Prevalence was 88.7% for anemia (hemoglobin <11 g/100 mL and EPO treatment at any Hb level), 39.4% for uncontrolled anemia (hemoglobin<11 g/100 mL). Gender, years of dialysis, hereditary cystic kidney disease (HCKD), and low BMI (<24 kg/m2) were independent correlates of anemia (P<0.001). Gender, HCKD, low BMI, serum albumin and calcium were independent correlates of uncontrolled anemia (P<0.05). An interaction was found between age (not correlated with anemia and uncontrolled anemia) and the association of gender with uncontrolled anemia (P<0.05). EPO doses were higher in patients with high prevalence of uncontrolled anemia than in patients with low prevalence (i.e., women vs men, other diseases vs HCKD, low vs not-low BMI, P<0.01). Gender, years of dialysis, HCKD, BMI, serum albumin, and calcium were independent correlates of the hemoglobin/EPO dose ratio in patients on EPO treatment (P<0.05).Conclusion Anemia and uncontrolled anemia are more frequent in hemodialysis patients with short-term dialysis, diseases other than HCKD, low BMI, and female gender. Gender effect was lower in elderly patients. Uncontrolled anemia was also associated with low serum albumin and calcium, suggesting that these parameters are indices of EPO resistance.

Biogenic polyamines, such as spermidine (SPD, NH2–(CH2)4–NH–(CH2)3–NH2), are ubiquitous polycationic molecules which play a definitive role in many biological processes such as nucleic acid metabolism, protein synthesis, and cell growth. SPD is commonly used as an ingredient in hair lotions, because it seems to promote hair growth. This work describes a capillary GC method for quantitative determination of SPD in hair lotions using 1,6‐diaminohexane as internal standard, a methyl silicone capillary column, and a flame ionisation detector. Aliquots of hair lotion were treated with an alkaline aqueous solution and internal standard was added. The emulsion was extracted with diethyl ether containing ethyl chloroformate. Ether extracts, evaporated to dryness and reconstituted in ethyl acetate, were analysed by capillary GC with flame ionisation detection. Validation took into account the specificity, linearity, precision, and accuracy of the analytical method: these parameters were valid for the quantitative determination of SPD in hair lotion.
