Synthesis and characterization of the optical properties of materials especially at a nanoscale, is considered as important tasks for the engineering of photonic devices and systems. In this paper we study the photoluminescence of new nanocomposite material consisting of arsenic sulfide doped in porous glasses and the effect of photoinduced structural transformations on it. The nanocomposite was obtained via chemical deposition method in which arsenic sulfide powder was dissolved in an amine solution and then clean pieces of porous glass were impregnated for 2 days in the solution. Strong photoluminescence signal was observed in the samples when excited with lasers with excitation wavelengths of 405 and 532 nm. Also, the effect of laser irradiation on the photoluminescence of the samples was studied using confocal microscope with two different operating lasers 405 and 514 nm. It was observed that laser irradiation influences photoluminescence differently depending on the irradiation wavelength.

Two-dimensional holographic structures based on photopolymer compositions with luminescent nanoparticles, such as quantum dots, are promising candidates for multiresponsive luminescence sensors. However, their applicability may suffer from the incompatibility of the components, and hence aggregation of the nanoparticles. We showed that the replacement of an organic shell at the CdSe/ZnS quantum dots’ surface with monomer molecules of the photopolymerizable medium achieved full compatibility with the surrounding medium. The effect was demonstrated by luminescence spectroscopy, and steady-state and time-resolved luminescent laser scanning microscopy. We observed the complete spectral independence of local photoluminescence decay, thus proving the absence of even nanoscale aggregation, either in the liquid composition or in the nodes and antinodes of the grating. Therefore, nanostructured luminescent photopolymer gratings with monomer-covered quantum dots can act as hybrid diffractive–luminescent sensor elements.

Antibacterial photodynamic therapy (a‐PDT) has emerged as a promising non‐invasive therapeutic modality that utilizes the combination of a photosensitive agent, molecular oxygen, and excitation light to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS), demonstrating remarkable activity against multidrug‐resistant bacterial infections. However, the effective use of conventional photosensitizers is significantly limited by a number of their shortcomings, namely, poor water solubility and low selectivity. Herein, we present a novel biocompatible water‐soluble nanocomposite based on hydrophobic tetraphenylporphyrin (TPP) molecules and hydrophilic ternary AgInS2/ZnS quantum dots incorporated into a chitosan matrix as an improved photosensitizer for a‐PDT. We demonstrated that TPP molecules could be successfully transferred into chitosan solution while remaining primarily in the form of monomers, which are capable of singlet oxygen generation. We performed a detailed analysis of the Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) between quantum dots and TPP molecules within the nanocomposite and proposed the mechanism of the singlet oxygen efficiency enhancement via FRET. Magnetic-luminescent composites based on semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) and superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) can serve as a platform combining visualization and therapy. Here, we report the construction of QD-SPION nanocomposites based on synthesized SPIONs and alloyed QDs (CdxZn1−xSeyS1−y)/ZnS solubilized with L-cysteine molecules. The study of the spectral-luminescence characteristics, the kinetics of luminescence decay show the composite’s stability in a solution. After incubation with HeLa cells, QDs, SPIONs, and their composites form clusters on the cell surface and associate with endosomes inside the cells. Component-wise analysis of the photoluminescence decay of cell-associated QDs/SPIONs provides information about their localization and aggregate status.

We report on the application of time-resolved inline digital holography in the study of the nonlinear optical properties of quantum dots deposited onto sample glass. The Fresnel diffraction patterns of the probe pulse due to noncollinear degenerate phase modulation induced by a femtosecond pump pulse were extracted from the set of inline digital holograms and analyzed. The absolute values of the nonlinear refractive index of both the sample glass substrate and the deposited layer of quantum dots were evaluated using the proposed technique. To characterize the inhomogeneous distribution of the samples’ nonlinear optical properties, we proposed plotting an optical nonlinearity map calculated as a local standard deviation of the diffraction pattern intensities induced by noncollinear degenerate phase modulation.

Titania nanoparticle/CdSe quantum dot hybrid structures are a promising bactericidal coating that exhibits a pronounced effect against light-sensitive bacteria. Here, we report the results of a comprehensive study of the photophysical properties and bactericidal functionality of these hybrid structures on various bacterial strains. We found that our structures provide the efficient generation of superoxide anions under the action of visible light due to electron transfer from QDs to titania nanoparticles with ~60% efficiency. We also tested the antibacterial activity of hybrid structures on five strains of bacteria. The formed structures combined with visible light irradiation effectively inhibit the growth of Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, and Mycobacterium smegmatis bacteria, the last of which is a photosensitive causative agent model of tuberculosis.

Dodecanethiol-functionalized gold nanoparticles were incorporated into the polymer matrix of diurethane-methacrylate monomer mixture in the presence of SiO2 nanoparticles (8 wt %) and a new reactive organic luminescent material ACAIN (1-N-(2-acryloyloxy-3-chloroprop-1-yl)-amino-5-isocyanonaphthalene, 1 wt %). This way, a new, probably multifunctional, polymer nanocomposite was obtained. It was shown that the addition of SiO2 nanoparticles enhances the fluorescent intensity of ACAIN by 1.5 times in the 450-550 nm spectral range. Furthermore, an additional fluorescence enhancement up to 4.5 times was observed when Au nanoparticles were added to this nanocomposite in a rather low (0.12 wt %) concentration.

Photoelectrical and photoluminescent properties of multilayer graphene (MLG)–quantum dots (QD) hybrid structures have been studied. It has been shown that the average rate of transfer from QDs to the MLG can be estimated via photoinduced processes on the QDs’ surfaces. A monolayer of CdSe QDs can double the photoresponse amplitude of multilayer graphene, without influencing its characteristic photoresponse time. It has been found that efficient charge or energy transfer from QDs to MLG with a rate higher than 3 × 108 s−1 strongly inhibits photoinduced processes on the QD surfaces and provides photostability for QD-based structures.
