1. Technology-Supported Physical Activity and Its Potential as a Tool to Promote Young Women’s Physical Activity and Physical Literacy: Systematic Review

Abstract

BackgroundDespite the known benefits of physical activity (PA), rates of engagement in PA remain low globally. Low engagement in PA among young women can impact their health. Technology-supported PA may increase PA and physical literacy (PL; skills that can support PA) among young women. ObjectiveThis systematic review aims to investigate the (1) associations between technology-supported PA and PA levels, (2) associations between technology-supported PA and PL levels, and (3) types of technology-supported PA that are associated with higher levels of PA engagement among young women aged 13 to 24 years. This age range was chosen as it includes two transitional periods characterized by decreases in PA. MethodsWe searched 6 databases: Applied Science and Technology Source, Education Source, Embase, MEDLINE Complete, Global Health, and SPORTDiscus. Eligible studies were original research published in English between January 1, 2010, and April 24, 2024; focused on young women; and involving either technology-supported PA interventions or research exploring the correlation between technology and PA and PL. The findings of the review were presented descriptively. Study quality was assessed using the JBI Critical Appraisal tools. There were no deviations from the registered protocol. ResultsIn total, 23 (0.1%) studies (10,233 participants) from 23,609 records were included: randomized controlled trials (n=9, 39%), nonrandomized or retrospective observational studies (n=9, 39%), and cross-sectional studies (n=5, 22%). 2. Disturbed Eating Attitudes, Social Physique Anxiety, and Perceived Pressure for Thin Body in Professional Dancers

Abstract

Professional ballet dancers are known as a high-risk group for adopting disordered eating behaviours. However, research regarding the professionals of other dance styles/genres is quite limited. The present study explored disordered eating, social physique anxiety (SPA) and perceived pressure for a thin body in professional dancers of different dance styles and genres. The Eating Attitude Test questionnaire (EAT-26), the Social Physique Anxiety Scale (SPAS), and the questionnaire for thin body by significant others were administered to 108 professional dancers of ballet (n = 37), Latin (n = 31) and traditional dance (n = 40). The results showed that seven dancers had an EAT-26 score =20, indicating abnormal eating behaviour. No statistically significant differences were found among the three dance groups in any assessment tool, even after controlling for age, sex and professional experience. However, when Body Mass Index (BMI) was added as a potential confounder in the model, significant differences were revealed. Our results indicate that BMI and not the dance genre is an important contributing factor for both the self-control of eating and the perceived pressure from co-dancers and choreographers. If a better 'dance life' is to be accomplished, actions aiming at enhancing positive relationships within professional dance environment would be beneficial for dancers.

3. Training Early Childhood Educators to Promote Children's Physical Activity

Abstract

Early childhood centres are important places for physical activity promotion in young children, considering the amount of time that children spend at childcare centres. The aim of this study was to train early childhood educators on physical activity promotion in children. Participants included 150 preschool children (75 female; M age = 46.15 months; SD = 5.02) from 7 early childhood centres located in Athens, Greece. Early childhood educators (N = 16; n[subscript intervention] = 9, n[subscript control] = 7) were allocated to intervention (n = 4) or control groups (n = 3). Teachers were provided with a learning workshop consisting of lectures and practical sessions. Children were fitted with pedometers mounted on the right hip during children's stay at the childcare centre on two random days before and after the intervention. A mixed 2 (group: intervention vs. control) × 2 (gender) × 2 (time of testing: before vs. after the intervention) experimental design with repeated measures on the latter factor was used. The number of children's steps was set as the dependent variable. Results showed a significant main effect of gender, with boys having more steps than girls but no differences between the two experimental groups. Training of early childhood educators, reliable assessments of physical activity and fidelity measures of compliance with physical activity are indispensable. Professional development of longer duration may provoke substantial changes in children's daily routine to include more opportunities for physical activity participation.

Abstract

On a national ministerial announcement concerning employing specialist Physical Education (PE) teachers to teach PE in early childhood education (as opposed to generalist early education teachers), this research sought to investigate teachers’ views on this issue. Taking Lawson's (1983) theory of occupational socialization as a sensitizing framework, we examined whether teachers' specialization and experiences of participation in PE influenced their perspectives on early childhood PE teaching. Twenty in-service teachers, male and female, working in public education as generalist early childhood teachers (n = 10) and specialist physical education teachers (n = 10) participated in the study. Semi-structured interviews and the thematic analysis technique were used to generate data. The results showed that irrespective of their specialization, teachers’ positive acculturation experiences in PE and sports influenced their attitudes towards early childhood PE. However, all participants assigned a functional-practical value to PE rather than an educational one. This finding was attributed to broader socio-cultural influences concerning the scope of school PE in early education. Both generalist and specialist teachers perceived their professional roles and responsibilities as distinct. They advocated for establishing interdisciplinary professional training programs as a prerequisite for employing PE specialists in early childhood education. Even though teachers’ specialization shapes their scientific assumptions and understandings, personal acculturation and professional socialization experiences seem influential in determining their daily practices at school. The emerging early childhood PE literature could open up a myriad of opportunities for research in this field, always keeping in mind that the learning needs and interests of young children stay in the foreground.

Abstract Background The concept of physical literacy (PL) has been advocated as a crucial determinant for increasing the quality and quantity of movement and physical activity (PA). Children’s PL has been rarely compared across countries, although it has shown low levels in many countries. This study aimed to explore and compare children’s PL from China and Greece. Methods A total of 327 Chinese (47.1% boys) and 295 Greek children (48.1% boys) aged 8 to 12 years participated in this study. Children’s PL was objectively assessed by the Chinese and Greek version of the Canadian Assessment of Physical Literacy, 2nd edition, which consists of four domains: Daily Behavior, Physical Competence, Motivation and Confidence, and Knowledge. and Understanding. 7. Learning and Digital Environment of Dance--The Case of Greek Traditional Dance in Youtube

Abstract

The incorporation of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in education has changed the educational procedures through the creation and use of new teaching and learning environments with the use of computers and network applications that afford new dimensions to distance education. In turn, these emerging and in progress technologies, render new practices in many fields including the field of dance offering a fertile quest to everyone involved in the dance. Yet, a critical evaluation of the content of YouTube dance videos has not been carried out though what is eventually learned through YouTube is a key question. Based on the above, the aim of this study was to critically examine the way YouTube network channel as Computer Based Learning-CBL functions both as a learning tool and as a teaching result concerning the field of dance having as example a Greek traditional dance named Karagouna. YouTube dance videos were gathered through observation, while the dance exemplar used was based on ethnographic research. For the dance recording of the Karagouna performances examined from YouTube, Laban's notation system (Labanotation) was used. For the analysis of the dance performances, the dance structural-morphological and typological method was adopted. Finally, for the comparison of the Karagouna dance performances examined from YouTube with the exemplar of the dancing community, the comparative method was used. It was proved that someone with little or no relation to dance is likely to learn dance with the use of YouTube, yet it is questionable what kind of dance will actually learn since in a number of cases the dance videos do not correspond to the performance of the dancing community. In addition, the outcome is different if someone with prior knowledge on the field of dance (dancer, dance teacher, dance student etc.) uses YouTube as a teaching and learning tool as, in this case, its use is useful and interactive.

8. Validation of the Canadian Assessment of Physical Literacy for Greek Children: Understanding Assessment in Response to Culture and Pedagogy

Abstract

Physical literacy (PL) is recognized as a channel for promoting holistic learning experiences within physical education (PE). Compared to conceptual advancements made in regard to its development, PL assessment lacks empirical evidence. The purpose of this study was to culturally adapt the Canadian Assessment of Physical Literacy -- 2 (CAPL-2) and assess its construct validity in Greek children aged 8-12 years. Participants were 576 children (boys = 268, girls = 308; mean age = 10.22 years, standard deviation = 1.27), from Greek geographical locations. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) compared the present sample data to a suggested theoretical model. Analysis of variance models and frequency tabulations were used to examine age and gender associations with CAPL-2 scores. CFA results established a good fit for the data and supported a model with four interrelated domains (X[superscript 2](67) = 122.751, p < 0.01; root mean square error of approximation = 0.038; comparative fit index = 0.906; and Tucker-Lewis index = 0.873). Boys' and older children's physical competence was higher. Girls and older children scored lower in daily physical activity (PA) behaviour. Knowledge scores depicted misunderstandings in participants' answers, which can be attributed to enacted Greek PE practices. Motivation was high across age groups and both genders, demonstrating that PA participation is prioritized for Greek children. CAPL-2 interpretive category scores were associated with age and gender, indicating the need for further research concerning their cultural adjustment. The CAPL-2 can be used as a valid and comprehensive instrument for charting Greek children's PL progress and making judgements in relation to situationally grounded PE perspectives.

Abstract

Children, especially girls, do not demonstrate physical activity (PA) and physical literacy (PL) levels associated with sufficient health benefits. Gymnastics is thought to be a suitable field for reinforcing children’s PL and related elements, such as PA. This study aimed at assessing the PL level of female recreational gymnasts to detect areas of sufficient and insufficient development in their PL. For that, 101 8-12-year-old girls (Mage=10.1±1.4), who participated in recreational gymnastics programs for at least one year (Myears=3.7±2.0), were assessed by using the Canadian Assessment of Physical Literacy (CAPL-2). Average scores (M±SD) for total PL and its related elements were calculated for all participants. Accordingly, each of them was classified into one out of the four CAPL-2’s interpretive categories, indicating whether she was at a non-recommended (“beginning”, “progressing”) or recommended level (“achieving”, excelling”). Regression analysis examined the association of total PL score with participants’ age and years of participation in gymnastics. Although the female gymnasts, similarly to same-age children worldwide, did not present adequate PL level, their fitness was sufficiently developed and they were excessively motivated/confident for PA. Adversely, other PL elements, i.e., their motor competence, PA knowledge, PA participation, were below the recommended levels, indicating deficiencies in their PL development. Age was associated with total PL (b=.440, p=.0001), whereas the years of gymnastics’ participation were not (b=.090, p=.325). Participation in recreational gymnastics is important for enhancing several PL elements of female gymnasts; however, for developing the entire range of PL elements, the implementation of multicomponent gymnastics programs must be prioritized.

11. 'Move' Their Brain: Motor Competence Mediates the Relationship of Physical Activity and Executive Functions in Children

Abstract

The inconsistent conclusions regarding the effects of physical activity (PA) on children’s executive functions (EFs) call for an investigation of the mediators that may explain this relationship during development. This study attempted to examine the potential mediating role of children’s weight status and motor competence (MC) in the PA-EFs relationship. In this regard, 115 children (Mage = 10.3 ± 1.2 years, 42.61% boys) practicing sports were cross-sectionally assessed for their PA (pedometers); BMI (body mass and height); MC (Bruininks–Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency); EFs (via computerized tests). The associations among the variables were examined using structural equation modelling. Based on the significant correlation between them (PA was not related to EFs, and BMI was not related to other variables), a serial path model was considered for investigation (PA→MC→EFs). The model fitted well with the data (χ2[5] = 7.244, p = 0.203; CFI= 0.991; RMSEA = 0.071 [0.000, 175], p = 0.315). The unstandardized path coefficients were significant (p < 0.05) (PA predicts MC/MC predicts EFs). All (but one) direct and all indirect effects were significant (p < 0.05), confirming that MC is an intervening variable in the PA-EFs relationship. Given that the cognitive/coordinative challenges related to PA are important to EFs development, children should be encouraged to participate in PA, especially sports, in programs targeting their motor skills.

Background: Pre-school years are important for adopting health behaviours; however, today’s children seem to be overweight, present low physical activity (PA) levels and exceed screen time (ST) recommendations. Aim: To examine (a) time trends in PA in Greek pre-school children, (b) the associations among PA, body mass index (BMI) and ST and (c) potential PA differences between boys and girls. Subjects and methods: Data from five cross-sectional cohorts (2005 [n = 252]; 2008 [n = 212]; 2011 [n = 187]; 2014 [n = 194]; 2017 [n = 128]) were compared. PA was assessed using Omron HJ-720IT-E2 pedometers, whereas ST was reported by participants’ parents. A 4-way ANOVA was applied on children’s average week step counts. Results: A significant association (F = 828.90, p 2 hours/day). Conclusion: Effective interventions aiming at reducing ST and enhancing PA seem imperative if children’s health is to be safeguarded.

Abstract

Balance, an important motor coordination ability, underlies the performance of various motor skills and allows for participation in common childhood activities. Research indicates that sport participation could support balance development in children. To confirm the above effect, this study investigated whether participation in different recreational physical activities could induce differences in children’s balance ability. Specifically, 138 children, 5- 11 years old (Mage=8.4±1.3), classified into four groups according to the activity they took part in (basketball, track and field, rhythmic gymnastics, contemporary dance), were assessed by the balance subset of the KörperKoordinationstest für Kinder. Pearson correlations were applied to detect associations of balance scores with age, height, body mass index (BMI) and showed significant correlations for BMI (p< .001). The analyses of covariance (covariate: BMI) that were computed on children’s balance scores showed statistically significant effects of group (p< .001). Sidak post hoc tests indicated that children participating in rhythmic gymnastics surpassed all three other groups; whereas those taking part in basketball had the lowest scores in almost every balance item. It seems that the type of physical activity a child participates in could be a significant contributor to the development of his/her balance. Physical activities encompassing the execution of various balance tasks, such as rhythmic gymnastics, seem to offer children greater opportunities to make improvements in this area compared to children engaging in activities of low balancing requirements. This finding highlights the potential that is available to coaches: they can contribute to children’s balance development by implementing sport-specific programs that target this human ability.

Participating in leisure-time physical activity (PA) is thought to positively associate with mental health. The aim of the present study was to investigate the acute psychological responses of adults who take part in different types of leisure-time PA (gymnastics; Greek traditional dance; tennis). A total of 277 adults, aged 18-65 years (M= 35.9, SD= 12.76 years), taking part in Greek traditional dance (n=89), gymnastics (n=88), or tennis (n=100) volunteered to participate. In order for potential changes in participants’ positive well-being, psychological distress and perceived fatigue to be examined, the Subjective Exercise Experiences Scale (SEES) was administered before and after a session of the aforementioned programmes. 16. Physical Activity Promotion in Greek Preschools: The Gap between Theory and Practice

Abstract

Recent research evidence has revealed that Greek preschoolers' physical activity (PA) levels are not satisfactory. Taking into account the amount of time spent daily in preschool settings as well as the finding that preschool appears to be a significant predictor of children's PA, the aim of the present study is to provide an overview of the role of Greek preschool settings in children's PA promotion. For that purpose, data regarding PA in Greek preschools are presented and the possible relevance of school characteristics to PA enhancement, namely the curriculum, school facilities and equipment, are critically discussed. Emphasis is also given to the need for the inclusion of developmentally appropriate physical education in the daily school schedule. Last but not least, the importance, of training not only the physical educators but also preschool teachers in promoting their students' PA is underscored.

Abstract

Non-competitive gymnastics can contribute to the development of physical literacy (PL) that is widely recognized as a promising foundation of active living. Assessing PL is the first step for the design and evaluation of effective gymnastic programs aiming at PL enhancement, as well as for the empowerment of children’s PL journey. This study attempted a comprehensive analysis of available PL assessment tools. Upon searching in five electronic databases, three multi-component tools that attempt to assess PL holistically and can be used in gymnastics were identified and were critically analyzed in relation to their content, target-population, feasibility and psychometrics. This process revealed that, despite their similarities, differences among assessment tools are evident, mainly on their primary focus, context(s) of application, age-groups they are designed for, criteria used for PL evaluation. Moreover, limitations were identified in every tool, including administration time; assessors’ training required; not designed for individuals with disabilities; limited evidence for their psychometrics, raising concerns about those tools’ feasibility, usefulness, and technical adequacy. As PL advancement demands valid and reliable assessment tools, the improvement of the existing ones to face their shortcomings and/or the development of new sound ones seems imperative.

19. Spatio-Temporal Interpolation and Bias Correction Ordering Analysis for Hydrological Simulations: An Assessment on a Mountainous River Basin

Abstract

Triggering hydrological simulations with climate change gridded datasets is one of the prevailing approaches in climate change impact assessment at a river basin scale, with bias correction and spatio-temporal interpolation being functions routinely used on the datasets preprocessing. The research object is to investigate the dilemma arisen when climate datasets are used, and shed light on which process—i.e., bias correction or spatio-temporal interpolation—should go first in order to achieve the maximum hydrological simulation accuracy. In doing so, the fifth generation of the European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) Reanalysis v5 (ERA5) temperature and precipitation products of 9 × 9 km spatial resolution, which are considered as the reference data, are initially compared with the same hindcast variables of a regional climate model of 12.5 × 12.5 km spatial resolution over a specific case study basin and for a 10-year period (1991–2000). Thereafter, the climate model’s variables are (a) bias corrected followed by their spatial interpolation at the reference resolution of 9 × 9 km with the use of empirical quantile mapping and spatio-temporal kriging methods respectively, and (b) spatially downscaled and then bias corrected by using the same methods as before. The derived outputs from each of the produced dataset are not only statistically analyzed at a climate variables level, but they are also used as forcings for the hydrological simulation of the river runoff. The simulated runoffs are compared through statistical performance measures, and it is established that the discharges attributed to the bias corrected climate data followed by the spatio-temporal interpolation present a high degree of correlation with the reference ones. The research is considered a useful roadmap for the preparation of gridded climate change data before being used in hydrological modeling.

Abstract

Due to the fact of water resource deterioration from human activities and increased demand over the last few decades, optimization of management practices and policies is required, for which more reliable data are necessary. Cost and time are always of importance; therefore, methods that can provide low-cost data in a short period of time have been developed. In this study, the ability of an artificial neural network (ANN) and a multiple linear regression (MLR) model to predict the electrical conductivity of groundwater samples in the GallikosRiver basin, northern Greece, was examined. A total of 233 samples were collected over the years 2004–2005 from 89 sampling points. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation matrix, and factor analysis were applied to select the inputs of the water quality parameters. Input data to the ANN and MLR were Ca, Mg, Na, and Cl. The best results regarding the ANN were provided by a model that included one hidden layer of three neurons. The mean absolute percentage error, modeling efficiency, and root mean square error were used to evaluate the performances of the methods and to compare the prediction capabilities of the ANN and MLR. We concluded that the ANN and MLR models were valid and had similar accuracy (using the same inputs) with a large number of samples, but in the case of a smaller data set, the MLR showed a better performance.

Abstract

This study investigated social physique anxiety (SPA), disturbed eating attitudes and behaviors (DEAB), and perceived pressure for thin body by the “significant others” (coach, parents, peers, experts) in 41 female rhythmic gymnastics (RG) and 49 aerobic gymnastics (AG) athletes at competitive level. Moreover, the potential impact of gymnasts' BMI was examined and controlled. Results showed that BMI associated with gymnasts’ SPA, DEAB and perceived pressure, so its effect was controlled. There were no significant differences between RG and AG regarding SPA and DEAB, whereas AG athletes had higher parental pressure for thin body than RG athletes. When RG and AG data were merged, a high percentage (40%) of gymnasts presenting DEAB was revealed. Gymnasts with DEAB had significantly higher SPA and perceived pressure for thin body than those with normal eating attitudes and behaviors. These results underline the need for interventions involving “significant others” and aiming at DEAB prevention in female gymnasts.

25. The Motor-Proficiency-Test for Children between 4 and 6 Years of Age (MOT 4-6): An Investigation of Its Suitability in Greece

Abstract

Given the negative influence of motor difficulties on people's quality of life their early identification seems to be crucial and consequently the information provided by a sound assessment tool is of great importance. The aim of this study was to examine the suitability of the MOT 4-6 (Zimmer & Volkamer, 1987) for use with preschoolers in Greece. Seven hundred and seventy-eight Greek children aged 48-71 months participated in the study. The two-way ANOVA used on total MOT performance revealed significant differences among the age groups formed in preschool age within Greeks, while boys' and girls' scores were quite similar. From the comparisons of Greeks' scores with the German standardization sample's ones, statistically significant differences were found in two age groups. However according to the Cohen's d effect size they were not of great importance. The distribution of Greeks' scores according to the test cut-offs, revealed that the MOT can differentiate all levels of performance, although a slight deviation from the distribution of Germans' scores was noticed. Finally, both the test-retest reliability and internal consistency of the test were found to be excellent. The MOT 4-6 seems to be a valuable motor assessment tool for Greek preschoolers. Regarding its norms, despite the minor differences that were noticed between the motor development of Greek and German preschoolers, their adjustment was thought to be unnecessary. Instead of lowering the norms, efforts for preventing the motor performance decline should be enhanced. (Contains 2 figures and 1 table.)

26. Reliability and Validity of Age Band 1 of the Movement Assessment Battery for Children--Second Edition

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine specific aspects of the reliability and validity of age band 1 of the Movement Assessment Battery for Children-Second Edition (MABC-2) (Henderson, Sugden, & Barnett, 2007) in Greek preschool children. One hundred and eighty-three children participated in the study; the children ranged in age from 36 to 64 months old (M = 50 months, SD = 9 months). Test-retest reliability of the MABC-2 was evaluated using intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). Cronbach's alpha for the items of each motor domain was estimated to determine internal consistency. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to examine the factorial validity of the MABC-2 test. Correlation coefficients among individual item scores and the total score were also calculated to further examine validity. The ICC for all test items was good, except for the drawing trail task, which was moderate. Cronbach's alpha coefficient values were 0.51, 0.70 and 0.66 for manual dexterity, aiming and catching, and balance, respectively. In the confirmatory factor analysis, goodness-of-fit indices suggested a satisfactory fit of the data to the model. The correlation coefficients between each test item and the total score were moderate. The results suggest that the MABC-2 can be a reliable and valid tool for the assessment of movement difficulties among 3-5-year-old children.

Abstract

Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) is an important risk factor in the development of children that can have a significant academic and social impact. This reinforces the need for its timely identification using appropriate assessment methods and accurate screening tests. The commonly used standardized motor test for the DCD identification is the Movement Assessment Battery for Children-Test (M-ABC Test) (Henderson & Sugden, 1992). The aim of the present study was to examine if the M-ABC Test can be considered to be the "gold standard" for the motor assessment of children with the aforementioned disorder. For that purpose, a critical review of the extant literature regarding M-ABC Test's psychometric properties was conducted. Neither the test manual nor the studies reviewed provide support for the reliability and validity of the M-ABC Test results in children with DCD. Until sufficient evidence for its technical adequacy is accumulated, the M-ABC Test should not be used in isolation for children with DCD. (Contains 1 table.)

Abstract

The importance of climate data in hydrological process simulation is widely recognized. Evaluation of the hydrological budget response to climate variability is required, especially in water resource management. The present paper illustrates a case study of a sensitivity analysis for the hydrological model SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) using climate data from the Havrias river basin in northern Greece. The ERA-Interim reanalysis daily climate data were used as input data to drive the SWAT model. The SWAT model was calibrated for the period from 1981 to 2000. The sensitivity of the hydrological parameters to the alteration of the climate data was analyzed by using eleven hypothetical scenarios. These scenarios regard different combinations of temperature, wind speed, precipitation, and relative humidity. The results show that the changes of precipitation temperature and relative humidity have a significant influence in evapotranspiration and percolation (and consequently recharge) in the study region. On the contrary, the wind speed negligibly affects the hydrological components. Overall, the Havrias river basin hydrological budget is sensitive to shifts in climate data and the utilization of reliable and accurate climate models outputs is necessary in order for water managers to be able to build scenarios providing sustainability against potential future climate change impacts.

29. Environmental Factors Affecting Preschoolers' Motor Development

Abstract

The process of development occurs according to the pattern established by the genetic potential and also by the influence of environmental factors. The aim of the present study was to focus on the main environmental factors affecting motor development. The review of the literature revealed that family features, such as socioeconomic status, mother's educational level, and the existence of siblings can affect children's motor competence. Preschool centers have also become important for children's development, due to the large amount of time children spend at them nowadays. Moreover, the social cultural context in which a child is reared forms certain demands for his/her motor behavior, favoring specific aspects of motor development and impairing others. A very influential factor (and consequently a very significant educational means) is the use of intervention movement programs. A developmentally adequate movement program can enhance motor development, thus preventing the long term negative consequences that an unfavorable influence of several genetic or the aforementioned environmental factors may have.

30. How Can a Traditional Greek Dances Programme Affect the Motor Proficiency of Pre-School Children?

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to investigate the effect of an introductory traditional Greek dances programme on the motor proficiency development of pre-school-age children. The sample of this research consisted of 66 students (36 boys and 30 girls) attending public kindergarten in Argolida prefecture (Greece), aged 4-6 years (X = 59.79 plus or minus 6.40 months). For the assessment of motor proficiency the "Test for children 4-6 years of age" ("Motoriktest fur vier-bis sechsjahrige Kinder," MOT 4-6, Zimmer & Volkamer, 1987) was used. The children of the experimental group (n = 28) attended the intervention programme for 20 weeks, participating in two sessions a week, while the children of the control group (n = 38) did not participate regularly in any organized physical activity programme. A two-way ANOVA model for repeated measures was used for data analysis. From the results, while both groups displayed an improvement in their performance, the experimental group surpassed statistically significantly the control group in the post-test. From the results it was observed that an introductory traditional Greek dances programme can notably improve children's motor proficiency. (Contains 1 table and 1 figure.)

Abstract

This study aimed to examine motor proficiency in young children, focusing on potential gender differences. For that purpose, the Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency–Long Form (BOTMP-LF) was administered to 540 children (272 boys), 4½ to 6 years old. First, the 2 (sex) × 4 (age groups) ANOVA computed on children’s total BOTMP-LF scores showed that age had a statistically significant effect, whereas gender did not. Second, the one-way MANCOVA applied on subtest scores, with age as covariate, revealed statistical significant gender differences; however, η 2 values were found to be small or moderate. Finally, the MANCOVA applied on items where significant gender differences have been reported showed a significant effect of gender. Nonetheless, η 2 values exceeded the limit of practical significance only on two items (“standing on preferred leg on floor”, “throwing a ball at a target with preferred hand”) that are associated with gender-stereotyped activities. It can be concluded that (a) besides statistical significance, effect sizes should be examined for the results of a study to be adequately interpreted; (b) young boys’ and girls’ motor proficiency is similar rather than different. Gender differences in specific skills should be used for movement programs to be individualized.

34. Physical Exercise as a Nonpharmacological Intervention for the Treatment of Neuropsychiatric Symptoms in Persons With Dementia: A Meta-analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.

Abstract

Background: Neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPS) are prevalent in dementia and affect both patients and caregivers in multiple ways. Because of the complications of drug treatments, nonpharmacological interventions, such as exercise, are of particular value. This study aimed to investigate the effect of exercise on the NPS of dementia and draw recommendations for the disease management. Methods: Meta-analyses were conducted on the findings of randomized controlled trials identified during an initial systematic review of the literature, according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. The included studies examined the effect of exercise interventions on patients with dementia or mild cognitive impairment using valid assessment tools. The quality of evidence was assessed using Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation analysis. Results: The meta-analyses revealed that exercise significantly limits NPS [mean difference: −5.28, (95% CI, −9.46, −1.11), P = 0.01] and symptoms of depression [standardized mean difference: −0.16, (95% CI, −0.29, −0.02), P = 0.02], and has a beneficial effect on agitation symptoms. The Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation analysis results showed that exercise has a moderate and high confidence positive effect on NPS and depression, respectively. Conclusions: Exercise could be an alternative approach for nonpharmacological treatment of NPS in dementia. 41. Use of the Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency for Identifying Children with Motor Impairment

Abstract

This study compared the consistency of the Short Form (SF) and the Long Form (LF) of the Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency (BOTMP) in identifying preschool children with motor impairment (MI). One hundred and forty-four Greek preschool children participated (74 males, 70 females; mean age 5y 2mo [SD 5mo], range 4y 6mo-5y 6mo). Although total SF and LF scores were highly correlated (r = 0.85), paired t-tests indicated significant differences (t = -27.466, p = 0.001). SF total scores (mean 58.72 [SD 7.28]) were higher than LF total scores (mean 47.38 [SD 9.43]). SF had low sensitivity (13.6%) and negative predictive value (72.5%) for identifying MI. The BOTMP-SF does not appear to be a valid test for the identification of MI in 5-year-old children. (Contains 1 figure and 1 table.)

49. Effects of an eight-week creative dance and movement program on motor creativity and motor competence of preschoolers.

Abstract

Introduction: Both motor creativity and motor competence are important features of children's personality that should be cultivated and enhanced in early years. Creative dance and movement are a valuable educational means; however, research on the outcomes of the implementation of this educational means on young children is limited and has several methodological shortcomings. Purpose: In this study, the effects of an eight-week creative dance and movement program on motor creativity and motor competence of preschoolers were investigated. Methods: A total of 57 preschoolers (49-73 months of age) participated in a controlled trial, with 29 children in the experimental group (EG) and 28 in the control group (CG). Pre-post assessments were conducted using the Thinking Creatively in Action and Movement Test (TCAM; Torrance, 1981) and the Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency-2 (BOT-2; Bruininks & Bruininks, 2005). Analyses of covariance (ANCOVAs), with age and pre-test scores as covariates, were utilized on children's total post-TCAM and BOT-2 scores. Results: Regarding motor creativity, a statistically significant superiority of EG (p < 0.001, ηp 2 = 0.36) was revealed; whereas, in motor competence no statistically significant differences were detected between CG and EG, in spite of the improvement of children's scores. Age was significantly associated with both motor creativity and motor competence scores (p < .001). Conclusion: This study indicates that a creative dance and movement program may substantially boost preschoolers' creative potential; however, it appears that this type of movement programs, focusing mainly on locomotor activities, does not provide children with enough opportunities to develop a wide range of their motor skills. Moreover, during preschool years, a few months age difference may considerably affect the creative and motor potential of children. Abstract

It is a common practice among female athletes of artistic swimming to execute a dry-land drill of their routine just before its final execution in the water. The potential advantages of this established procedure have never been confirmed on an experimental basis. This study aimed at providing statistical evidence vindicating the dry-land drill. Forty seven Greek athletes of artistic swimming (seven of whom belong to the Greek National team) were given a routine containing standard figures, positions and movements. This routine was performed twice, with and without prior dry-land drill, executed in a random order with a lapse of one week between the two performances. The same three international judges were recruited to rate the performances in the standard three panels of execution, difficulty and artistic impression. The ratings of the performance including a dry-land drill were significantly better (paired t-test, p<0.001) than those without it. This improvement was consistent in all categories and levels of athletes. The enhancement in the performance brought about by the execution of a dryland drill was more pronounced in younger athletes. The improvement in athletes' performance when they execute a dry-land drill may play an important role in the ranking of the athletes in national and international events.
