The world’s largest extant fish, the whale shark Rhincodon typus, is one of the most-studied species of sharks globally. The discovery of predictable aggregation sites where these animals gather seasonally or are sighted year-round – most of which are coastal and juvenile-dominated – has allowed for a rapid expansion of research on this species. The most common method for studying whale sharks at these sites is photographic identification (photo-ID). This technique allows for long-term individual-based data to be collected which can, in turn, be used to evaluate population structure, build population models, identify long-distance movements, and assess philopatry and other population dynamics. Lagged identification rate (LIR) models have fewer underlying assumptions than more traditional capture mark recapture approaches, making them more broadly applicable to marine taxa, especially far-ranging megafauna species like whale sharks. However, the increased flexibility comes at a cost. Parameter estimations based on LIR can be difficult to interpret and may not be comparable between areas with different sampling regimes. Using a unique data-set from the Philippines with ~8 years of nearly continuous survey effort, we were able to derive a metric for converting LIR residency estimates into more intuitive days-per-year units. We applied this metric to 25 different sites allowing for the first quantitatively-meaningful comparison of sightings-derived residence among the world’s whale shark aggregations. We validated these results against the only three published acoustic residence metrics (falling within the ranges established by these earlier works in all cases). The results were then used to understand residency behaviours exhibited by the sharks at each site. Pyrolyzed non-precious metal catalysts have been proposed as an alternative to substitute the expensive and scarce noble metal catalysts in several conversion energy reactions. For the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), the pyrolyzed catalyst M−N−C (M: Fe or Co) presents remarkable catalytic activity in acid and alkaline media. These pyrolyzed materials show a high heterogeneity of active sites being the most active in the MNx moieties. The activity and stability of these catalysts are also conditioned by other structural parameters such as the area, the N-doping, and by the presence of metal particles. In this study, we explore the use of FeO nanoparticles as templates and as iron sources to synthesize Fe−N−C. The best performance for the ORR in acidic media was reached with the catalysts using nanoparticles covered by PANI and iron salts as the precursor, with an onset potential of 0.85 vs. RHE and a direct 4-electrons mechanism. We corroborated the use of the catalysts’ redox potential as reactivity descriptors and discussed the detrimental role of the presence of FeC metallic particles in the mechanism. Based on the experimental results, we performed DFT calculations to explore the influence of N-doped species on the electronic density of the iron centers of FeN4 active sites, and we propose a theoretical model for increasing the activity based on the distance and ratio of N-doping to iron center.

Motivation: We accessed published and unpublished floristic sources to compile a comprehensive species list of the Iberian–Balearic terrestrial vascular flora and generate AFLIBER, an accurate floristic database of georeferenced plant occurrence records. Main type of variable contained: Species distribution data totalling 1,824,549 plant occurrence records corresponding to 6,456 species and subspecies. Spatial location and grain: The western Mediterranean, including inland territories of Spain, Portugal and Andorra and the adjacent archipelagos of Berlengas, Columbretes and the Balearic Islands, covered by 6,316 UTM quadrangular grid cells of 10 km resolution. Time period: All distributional trustable records were considered to create the AFLIBER database, most of them dating from the 1960s onwards. Major taxa and level of measurement: Terrestrial vascular plant species and subspecies. Software format: Data are supplied as comma-separated text (csv) files.

The repeated bout effect (RBE) confers protection following exercise-induced muscle damage. Typical signs of this protective effect are significantly less muscle soreness and faster recovery of strength after the second bout. The aim of this study was to compare regional changes in medial gastrocnemius (MG) muscle activity and mechanical hyperalgesia after repeated bouts of eccentric exercise. Twelve healthy male participants performed two bouts of eccentric heel drop exercise (separated by 7 days) while wearing a vest equivalent to 20% of their body weight. High-density MG electromyographic amplitude maps and topographical pressure pain sensitivity maps were created before, two hours (2H), and two days (2D) after both exercise bouts. Statistical parametric mapping was used to identify RBE effects on muscle activity and mechanical hyperalgesia, using pixel-level statistics when comparing maps. The results revealed a RBE, as a lower strength loss (17% less; P < .01) and less soreness (50% less; P < .01) were found after the second bout. However, different muscle regions were activated 2H and 2D after the initial bout but not following the repeated bout. Further, no overall changes in EMG distribution or mechanical hyperalgesia were found between bouts. These results indicate that muscle activation is unevenly distributed during the initial bout, possibly to maintain muscle function during localized mechanical fatigue. However, this does not reflect a strategy to confer protection during the repeated bout by activating undamaged/non-fatigued muscle areas.

Seedling planting plays a key role in active forest restoration and regeneration of managed stands. Plant attributes at outplanting can determine tree seedling survival and consequently early success of forest plantations. Although many studies show that large seedlings of the same age within a species have higher survival than small ones, others report the opposite. This may be due to differences in environmental conditions at the planting site and in the inherent functional characteristics of species. Here, we conducted a global-scale meta-analysis to evaluate the effect of seedling size on early outplanting survival. Our meta-analysis covered 86 tree species and 142 planting locations distributed worldwide. We also assessed whether planting site aridity and key plant functional traits related to abiotic and biotic stress resistance and growth capacity, namely specific leaf area and wood density, modulate this effect. Planting large seedlings within a species consistently increases survival in forest plantations worldwide. Species’ functional traits modulate the magnitude of the positive seedling size–outplanting survival relationship, showing contrasting effects due to aridity and between angiosperms and gymnosperms. For angiosperms planted in arid/semiarid sites and gymnosperms in subhumid/humid sites the magnitude of the positive effect of seedling size on survival was maximized in species with low specific leaf area and high wood density, characteristics linked to high stress resistance and slow growth. By contrast, high specific leaf area and low wood density maximized the positive effect of seedling size on survival for angiosperms planted in subhumid/humid sites. Results have key implications for implementing forest plantations globally, especially for adjusting nursery cultivation to species’ functional characteristics and planting site aridity. Understanding how species’ thermal limits have evolved across the tree of life is central to predicting species’ responses to climate change. Here, using experimentally-derived estimates of thermal tolerance limits for over 2000 terrestrial and aquatic species, we show that most of the variation in thermal tolerance can be attributed to a combination of adaptation to current climatic extremes, and the existence of evolutionary ‘attractors’ that reflect either boundaries or optima in thermal tolerance limits. Our results also reveal deep-time climate legacies in ectotherms, whereby orders that originated in cold paleoclimates have presently lower cold tolerance limits than those with warm thermal ancestry. Conversely, heat tolerance appears unrelated to climate ancestry. Cold tolerance has evolved more quickly than heat tolerance in endotherms and ectotherms. If the past tempo of evolution for upper thermal limits continues, adaptive responses in thermal limits will have limited potential to rescue the large majority of species given the unprecedented rate of contemporary climate change.

There is a high interest on gut health in poultry with special focus on consequences of the intestinal diseases, such as coccidiosis and C. perfringens-induced necrotic enteritis (NE). We developed a custom gene expression panel, which could provide a snapshot of gene expression variation under challenging conditions. Ileum gene expression studies were performed through high throughput reverse transcription quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. A deep review on the bibliography was done and genes related to intestinal health were selected for barrier function, immune response, oxidation, digestive hormones, nutrient transport, and metabolism. The panel was firstly tested by using a nutritional/Clostridium perfringens model of intestinal barrier failure (induced using commercial reused litter and wheat-based diets without exogenous supplementation of enzymes) and the consistency of results was evaluated by another experiment under a coccidiosis challenge (orally gavaged with a commercial coccidiosis vaccine, 90× vaccine dose). Growth traits and intestinal morphological analysis were performed to check the gut barrier failure occurrence. Results of ileum gene expression showed a higher expression in genes involved in barrier function and nutrient transport in chickens raised in healthy conditions, while genes involved in immune response presented higher expression in C.perfringens-challenged birds. On the other hand, the Eimeria challenge also altered the expression of genes related to barrier function and metabolism, and increased the expression of genes related to immune response and oxidative stress. The panel developed in the current study gives us an overview of genes and pathways involved in broiler response to pathogen challenge. It also allows us to deep into the study of differences in gene expression pattern and magnitude of responses under either a coccidial vaccine or a NE.

A large body of research shows that biodiversity loss can reduce ecosystem functioning. However, much of the evidence for this relationship is drawn from biodiversity–ecosystem functioning experiments in which biodiversity loss is simulated by randomly assembling communities of varying species diversity, and ecosystem functions are measured. This random assembly has led some ecologists to question the relevance of biodiversity experiments to real-world ecosystems, where community assembly or disassembly may be non-random and influenced by external drivers, such as climate, soil conditions or land use. Here, we compare data from real-world grassland plant communities with data from two of the largest and longest-running grassland biodiversity experiments (the Jena Experiment in Germany and BioDIV in the United States) in terms of their taxonomic, functional and phylogenetic diversity and functional-trait composition. We found that plant communities of biodiversity experiments cover almost all of the multivariate variation of the real-world communities, while also containing community types that are not currently observed in the real world. Moreover, they have greater variance in their compositional features than their real-world counterparts. We then re-analysed a subset of experimental data that included only ecologically realistic communities (that is, those comparable to real-world communities). For 10 out of 12 biodiversity–ecosystem functioning relationships, biodiversity effects did not differ significantly between the full dataset of biodiversity experiments and the ecologically realistic subset of experimental communities. Although we do not provide direct evidence for strong or consistent biodiversity–ecosystem functioning relationships in real-world communities, our results demonstrate that the results of biodiversity experiments are largely insensitive to the exclusion of unrealistic communities and that the conclusions drawn from biodiversity experiments

According to the competitive exclusion principle, species with low competitive abilities should be excluded by more efficient competitors; yet, they generally remain as rare species. Here, we describe the positive and negative spatial association networks of 326 disparate assemblages, showing a general organization pattern that simultaneously supports the primacy of competition and the persistence of rare species. Abundant species monopolize negative associations in about 90% of the assemblages. On the other hand, rare species are mostly involved in positive associations, forming small network modules. Simulations suggest that positive interactions among rare species and microhabitat preferences are the most probable mechanisms underpinning this pattern and rare species persistence. The consistent results across taxa and geography suggest a general explanation for the maintenance of biodiversity in competitive environments.

The study of non-precious metal catalysts (NPMCs) as alternatives to platinum for oxygen reduction is crucial if the use of fuel cells is to become more widespread. Among NPMCs, pyrolyzed catalysts (Fe-N-C) are particularly promising in both basic and acid media. The characterization of active sites and the understanding of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) mechanism are crucial for the design of active Fe-N-C catalysts. In this study, we have tested the involvement of the metal centre in the ORR process at pH 13 for two pyrolyzed iron porphyrins. The pyrolyzed catalysts present a FeN4 active site structure similar to that of the porphyrin precursors. Regarding the mechanism, we have found evidence for the crucial role of the Fe(II) centres. There is a direct relation between the Fe(III)/(II) redox transition of the catalysts and the onset potential of the ORR, showing that the electrogeneration of Fe(II) from Fe(III)OH– controls the catalysis. The poisoning of iron centres with CN− induces a decrease in the ORR activity. However, the onset potential for H2O2 generation remains unchanged. The Tafel plots show two different slopes at high and low overpotentials. Based on these results, we propose two different mechanisms, both dependent on the redox potential of the catalysts and the FeO2 binding energy.

The environment changes faster than the ability of genetic recombination to generate natural genetic diversity. In this context, epigenetic regulation of gene expression has the potential to provide organisms with an alternative mechanism for phenotypic variation by controlling the extent of plasticity that can be achieved in response to environmental changes. There is now substantial evidence suggesting roles for epigenetic regulation of several different aspects of the plant response to biotic stress. At the basic level of gene expression, posttranscriptional gene silencing mediated by small RNAs and chromatin remodelling controlling transcriptional gene silencing are essential for the induced resistance responses activated during pest and pathogen attack. Beyond this, there is also evidence that histone modifications and DNA methylation are associated with immune memory, or defence priming, such as systemic acquired resistance (SAR). In addition, recent evidence indicates that epigenetic modifications can also generate longer-term defence priming responses that can be inherited across generations. In this chapter, we will discuss the roles of epigenetics in these different modes of biotic stress resistance, and suggest ways in which we may in the future be able to exploit epigenetic systems for crop protection.

Pyrolyzed non-precious metal catalysts (NPMCs) are promising materials to replace platinum-based catalysts in the cathode of the fuel cells. These catalysts present high catalytic activity both in alkaline and acid media for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). These catalysts are essentially heterogeneous as they can present different types of active sites. MNx structures have been proposed as the most active for the ORR, similar to those of the MN4 structures of metal porphyrins and phthalocyanines. Several parameters have been proposed as reactivity descriptors to correlate the structure of these materials with their catalytic activity, such as the amount of MNx and of pyridinic nitrogens in the graphitic structure. In this study, we have explored the metal center redox potential of the catalyst as an overall reactivity descriptor. We have investigated this descriptor for pyrolyzed and intact catalysts for the ORR in acid and basic media. We have found that for all catalysts tested, there is a linear correlation between the redox potential of the catalyst and the catalytic activity expressed as (log i)). The activity increases as the redox potential becomes more positive. The correlation gives a straight line of slope close to +0.12 V/decade which agrees with the theoretical slope proposed in a previous publication assuming the adsorbed M − O follows a Langmuir isotherm and that the redox potential is directly linked to the M − O binding energy. The Tafel plots present two slopes, at low and high overpotentials. Based on these results, we proposed two different mechanisms. The low Tafel slopes of −60 mV appear at potentials where the surface concentration of M(II) active sites is potential dependent (close to the onset potential). At higher overpotentials the surface coverage of M(II) becomes constant and the slope changes to −0.120 V/decade.

An efficient and inexpensive catalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is the key missing component for large-scale development of fuel cells. Bio-inspired tethered electrocatalysts could be the solution to this problematic reaction. Either unsubstituted Fe phthalocyanine (FePc) or Fe hexadecachloro-phthalocyanine (16(Cl)FePc) was anchored to carbon nanotubes (CNTs) via a pyridine axial ligand. The results show that the fifth coordination plays a major role in increasing the catalytic activity of FePc and 16(Cl)FePc for the ORR. The coordination also allows the decoupling of the metal centre from the carbon support, thus changing the geometrical and electronic structure and hindering the production of HO. The pentacoordinated catalysts were stable in acidic pH according to the rotating disk analysis, but the activity of the hexadecachloro compound was not higher than that of the unsubstituted phthalocyanine. Cl atoms reduced the coupling between O and Fe, mismatching the energy of the frontier orbitals and lowering the activity towards the reduction of O.

La conservación y la restauración del capital natural es una necesidad apremiante en el escenario de cambio global que estamos viviendo, en donde se están intensificando los impactos sobre los ecosistemas. En este contexto, el Grupo de Ecología Forestal y Restauración de la Universidad de Alcalá (>Forest Ecology and Restoration Group” FORECO (Fig.1)) ha surgido precisamente para generar el conocimiento científico necesario para afrontar los nuevos retos de gestión, conservación y restauración de los ecosistemas.
